I was in this line of work way back when we did the it HARD WAY, simply using the best products available in the 70s. Our bodies KNEW we had done the best we could!! We did produce some incredible results, and customers loved it!! This old Plymouth reminds me of those days!! THANKS for doing this detail job, well done!!
Marks nephew here, nice to see more of his cars get cleaned up and on the road, he gave me a 1984 daytona turbo that i fixed up myself i definitely couldnt get it that clean maybe i ought to take a few notes
Prepare for a long comment. First of all, great video! From '62 through '64 the Dodge 330 was their entry level B-body car. The 440 - like you did - was their mid grade entry. The Polara and Polara 500 [2 door hardtop & convertible only] were the top of the line trims. In 1978, I bought a 1964 Polara 500 hardtop from its original owner. It had a 383 engine, bucket seats and a full length console. A/C, power steering and brakes. It had 67K miles. All original. I owned that car for 16 years. When I sold it, it had 233K miles. I also bought a Dodge 440 sedan in 1984. It was a retired undercover police car [think Blues Brothers]. Had heavy duty EVERYTHING! Still had the rubber floor covering and the loops in the back to secure leg irons with. Also, had a 1964 Dodge 440 station wagon, equipped like the Polara 500. Really enjoyed those cars. Glad to see you start the rescue of one.
Friend of mine in the 70' and 80's was a Chrysler fanatic. Had several products that he worked and drove . He sold me a 63 Plymouth. Ugliest car I ever owned. I loved it. And it steered very well.
I have a 64 440 2 door hardtop and they’re really cool old cars for sure. Mine is a 383 automatic with power disk brakes and power steering and air conditioner that works great.
Neat car indeed. The 440 was the middle trim level, between the base 330 and Polara. Polara 500 was limited to 2 door hardtop and convertible. I always loved both the 63 and 64 Dodges and Plymouths. Very sharp designs.
if it was outside in a junkyard, that would be letting it rot, but this was stored in a barn, so it was protected from the elements, however too bad about the mice....
Sometimes all it takes is getting the car out of the barn, shined up for the owners to have the spark to get it running again ❤ As it was, I am sure they felt overwhelmed and didn't think they could get it cleaned.
I have this cars twin. 63 Dodge 440 4 door sedan, 318 Poly, Push button automatic. Mine is even the same color. My front fenders have more rust but the rest of the body on mine is solid, but my paint is worse. 70K miles on the clock.
Happy Birthday! You really brought back the shine… and that little dog at the end seemed really excited about it, the International looks rad -can’t wait to see it cleaned up!
Yeah, you can hear him huffing and puffing, just from standing there. He's so outta shape, any hard work might kill him. He needs to lose 100lbs. That extra 100lbs is killing his joints, back, and heart.
Thanks for the advice it’s something I’m working on. Since you care I was also in icu with Covid where I was ventilated and trachea also why I was huffing and puffing. Hard work doesn’t kill me been doing it all my life
I don't understand why you did not remove the hubcap before you painted the wheel. I assume it is faster popped off than masking it. Or is there an invisible line where detailing ends and restoration begins?
Because the point is only a temporary cosmetic thing. You can't paint over rust either, if properly restored you have to sand/sandblast that rim and repaint/powdercoat, preferably with the tire removed. He just sprayed some paint on for the looks, so the owner (and us) can get a better idea of what the car looks like if he puts some work in it and makes it nice again.
Even in this state - this car is at least 10 times more beautiful than today's soulless crap. God, did they know how to design cars back in the days...
That is one sweet ride!!! It could be one hell of a sleeper, nobody would suspect it having a BIG block 440 under that hood. Hopefully his son respects and appreciates the gift he got. It's probably all original everything. I wonder how many miles and how it was driven. Awesome
It is just a rusty four door sedan that had a hard life in the rust belt. It isn't really spectacular. The '440' emblems denotes the mid-range trim level on this Dodge, not the engine. It has a 318 poly, which won't make anybody tingle with excitement. Beater driver (if not rusted to oblivion underneath) or parts car - definitely not worth the expense of restoration, even with family ties.
The engine is a 318 poly ,the body style is a coronet, this one has 156000 miles, the car earned it's rust before it was parked. Liked to hear about it's twin.
Michigan.....That should tell you all you need to know. Salty roads, and no one had the sense to wash them thoroughly everytime it got above freezing. Really have to concentrate the hose nozzle along all the trim and the wheelwells. I preserved my mother's 64 Barracuda by doing that. It lived in salty road Maryland from April 64 to April 78. It has lived in Alabama since then, we still have it.
You are one brave detailer- personally I would have tried to knock off alot of that funk BEFORE ever pulling it into the shop- maybe some or all of the mice would have relocated in the process too! Glad you wore mask and gloves on the interior! A disposable Haz Mat suit might have been in order too! LOL! Seriously though, why on gods green earth if a body had ANY inkling about doing something with the car in the future-WHY in the world wouldn't you try to mitigate some of the inevitable mouse damage you know would occur in such a storage condition. Here son- I give to you one of the ugliest POS's full of mice droppings and urine! Enjoy! Gee! Thanks dad!
Shame they left it so long looks like a 318 poly such a great motor with the T/ Flight . She will need many things brake lines full tune all oil changed . New interior but it’s worth it . Not sure about rust underneath 🤔. She be nice with old school mags and white letter tyres and twin pipes . 👍🏻🇦🇺.
Hmmm. Methinks I see a 318 power spare V-8 under the hood. While most of these cars ran a slant 6, you could get a V-8 raging from a 318 to a 426 street wedge. My neighbor had a 330 sedan that was a very nice car even though it was basic. He bought it in '78 ad kept it and drove it til he passed away in 2005. Wanted to buy it from him but didn't have enough coins to do it.
I bought one of these (actually a 330) in my last year of high school late 78 going into 79. Same color, 4 door, bent 6 with a push button auto for $60 off Tradin Times. It had a broken rear leaf spring(drivers side pretty sure), no brakes, and the heater core was bypassed because it leaked. Did the brakes in auto shop, replaced the spring in my driveway and fixed the heater that spring after trying to drive it that winter. Traded it to a guy at school that summer for a '74 Fiat 128 sedan only because he wanted this thing so badly I just couldn't refuse. The Fiat had a bad starter that I never fixed. I'd just either push start it at home or park on a hill at school and roll start it. Finally sold it to a junk yard even though it was still running.
At my job we were tearing out old ceiling tiles so we could put new ones in for big bosses and a Pabst blue ribbon can like that coke can fell out of the ceiling I took it home and it sits on a shelf with other cans I’ve collected
Your shop ain't to far from Salfridge in Macomb County! Black and White 79 plate, which was the last year you needed a front plate on Michigan cars. Great to see a Michigan Channel on the tube! I lived in the Clem till may of 2015. Now I live in TN.❤
Steam cleans best. I use a steamer with collagen based cleaners for leather,. The steam heat breaks down the collagen to produce a capillary effect by floating out the dirt from the pores in the leather skin. Works great. I thought this Dodge would never get clean until I saw the steam flowing, and it came out almost showroom fresh.
For what? They were weak. I rode in plenty of them. This car needs a 383-440 put in place of that poly 318. Put that on a shelf to collect dust. Put a Holley sniper or ACE fuel injection on it for drivability and milage. That will help make it so much nicer for being the cruiser that it is.
You did a great job cleaning it up but it's still a '63 Dodge and that design hasn't gotten any prettier in 61 years. Took Chrysler a couple years after Exner left to get their act together.

Even if a car is ugly, you'd cherish the memory
With really wide tires up front, and manual steering, they steer HARD, especially in parking lots. On the open road, they're nice.
Seeing the car return to its original glory makes me feel like I'm witnessing a piece of history being revived!
Yessir, it feels great!
Great job on the car it's beautiful! I like how the music in the video really matched the vibe of the car
I have a 64 440 2 door hardtop and they’re really cool old cars for sure. Mine is a 383 automatic with power disk brakes and power steering and air conditioner that works great.
Nice transformation but I bet the interior smelled pretty bad after 45 yrs. 🧐
Beautiful rusty, old, beat up, cleaned and polished car.
Use a Mr clean scrubbies. And bon ami to shine up then polish up 😊

I want to believe those two fellows will work on the fine car, but they let it rot for decades and I have my doubts
if it was outside in a junkyard, that would be letting it rot, but this was stored in a barn, so it was protected from the elements, however too bad about the mice....

I don't understand why you did not remove the hubcap before you painted the wheel. I assume it is faster popped off than masking it. Or is there an invisible line where detailing ends and restoration begins?
He is not a mechanic, he is a detailer. the hub caps are disposable and will be replaced.
Because the point is only a temporary cosmetic thing. You can't paint over rust either, if properly restored you have to sand/sandblast that rim and repaint/powdercoat, preferably with the tire removed.
