At the time, I was under the impression that people didn't want to hear about the comics history and just wanted to get on with the reviews (hence the creation of the Continuity Alarm - it wasn't there whenever a continuity issue arose; it existed to prevent me from talking about excessive continuity instead of getting on with it).
However, as I've brought up on many occasions, I'm not a fan of the Ultimate Universe. I'll freely admit that Ultimate Spider-Man is great. I've read some of it and it's good stuff, but it's not what I'm looking for in a Spider-Man comic because I'm not really all that interested in all his teenager issues. However, the rest of the Ultimate Universe? Eesh. Admittedly, I haven't read very many of the other titles, but everything that I've read about them (and what I HAVE read) does not paint a picture of the kind of universe I'm interested in. It's written like an excuse to have every kind of dark, sadistic, overly gruesome and violent and "shock" idea put to paper all in the veneer of being "mature." The Ultimates is probably one of the prime examples of that. It's so... joyless. They're not BAD, but they're not anything I really want to reread any time soon. And so walking into Ultimates 3 knowing what was decent beforehand was just... blegh. And the people needed to see some context before Ultimatum got reviewed... like, a year or two later. Whoops.
This part contains one of my favorite jokes I've ever made - "OH MY GOD HE ATE TOO MUCH PUDDING." I did multiple takes of this line because I loved it so much that I wanted to get it just right. And the results speak for themselves.

The whole "Superheroes can't be in the real world without being assholes" thing reminds me of Aberrant - a tabletop RPG by White Wolf back in the 90s. Now, White Wolf is pretty famous for its grimdarkness and somewhat dour tones...but Aberrant has to be the most realistic and yet still optimistic take on superheroes in the real world.
It takes place in the NEAR FUTURE of 2008 (remember, 90s), and the idea is that over the past 10 years, superhuman beings called "novas" have been cropping up - think like the X-Men. Except unlike the X-Men, novas actually do...reasonable things.
Supersmart nova? Invents stuff like the "hypercombustion" engine and efficient solar powers that make both climate change and worries about oil prices a thing of the past.
Novas that can manipulate the weather or the earth? Well, that's why Ethiopia has been terraformed into verdant country that can feed most of Africa by itself.
People who can teleport from place to place instantly? Exploration of the solar system goes forward at a new and breakneck pace!
    And so on.
Not everything is roses and sunshine - in fact, there are dangers that (if not dealt with by the player characters) will eventually lead to a nova/baseline war that leaves most of the planet devastated. But for the most part, the novas are depicted as being...regular people. Some are good, some are bad, some are indifferent. Some wear costumes for reasons ranging from a desire to market their image, because they think it is sexy, or to inspire people to do good. Some don't wear costumes for just as many reasons.
    Also, death is permanent.
...kinda wish more comics would do that.
And also not kill characters off constantly, so that death is actually something that matters.

wasp's attitude of "those gosh darn siblings and their kooky incest!" is one of the most laughibly bizare things i've seen in a modern comic, you can tell they're in the bizaro universe when cap's reaction to incest is considered the odd response

    • @TeamAonn
      @TeamAonn 8 лет назад +27

+ColeVecsion The way I understand it is that Wasp in this is part Asian (no idea why) but in many Asian (Japanese mostly) pornos and shippings (pairings if you don't understand the phrasing) incest is a running theme (Wish I was kidding about this, it's kind of overdone), hence her attitude regarding it. In Modern Cultures, such as those found in North America, and Europe, incest is more of a hush hush thing due to the Counter initiatives against it, being found mostly in the form of Religion. Truth of the matter is, Minnesota (where Linkara is from) and the rest of the US may not be around if it weren't for Incest, as The United States was originally part of English Colonies... the English Monarchy for the longest time would marry into itself, and breed into itself, and will be the greatest example of Inbreeding that people choose to forget. Most people think of incest now, and think of two ugly people from a trailer park, and no, I'm not saying that stereotype is true, as I knew of A mother and son who ended up hooking up on it, only for the younger sister of the son to walk in on the two screwing and well... they went to jail... but not for incest... for not locking the door and endangering the welfare of a child as the sister was 14 at the time. No, I'm not kidding. Most of the incest laws, from what I've heard, are rarely if ever enforced by law enforcement in the united states... unless you live in New Jersey... in that state, well Enjoy your incestuous relationship.... cause it's legal there... from what i read.

Ultimate Spider-Man was probably my favorite of the line, and I feel it was the title that maintained its quality most consistently, and I maintain that it was THE BEST Spidey book being published during the tumultuous Webslinging era of the 00s. I stopped reading regularly after Miles came around, but I won't deny that his stories from what I read are pretty good like his crossover with 616-Peter.
I also enjoyed Mark Millar's brief run on Ultimate Fantastic Four that introduced Marvel Zombies in spite of its sped-up pacing, but still, it had the misfortune of being saddled with Greg "Pornface" Land's artwork. Ultimates 1 + 2 were good reads, despite Millar's insistence on dialing everybody's (except for Thor's) asshole meter up to 11.
I really didn't enjoy Ultimate X-Men. The quality went all over the place in my opinion.

You know, in most versions of the Marvel Universe, Captain America vouching for you is good enough to get you on the team.
This is why I like DC's Earth One so much: the heroes struggle with self-don't and make mistakes, and people in authority don't trust them, but THEY'RE STILL HEROES. Superman and Batman still want (and succeed) in helping people, the Teen Titans don't want some nut take over the world, and Wonder Woman . . . is still pretty much Wonder Woman as originally conceived by William Moulton Marston. Also, when alcohol, sex, and drugs show up in the Earth One stories, they serve a frickin' point! They're not there to make the story seem more edgy or mature; they're there because the story IS more mature and can address these subjects like an adult and not like a teenager.
Also, I never read HUSH, but I read HEART OF HUSH, and I definitely think the character was a great idea.

***** But... but Young Justice was good. I admit it is ungodly cliched, too many action scenes and less character development, but it's still good, enjoyable at least.
However, if you're talking about Young Justice Invasion, that's an entirely different story. Invasion really feels like Weisman puts way too much effort on making Young Justice to be the best cartoon series ever. The guy tries to make it like it was some sort of a Tom Clancy novel. Inserting double agents, lying to the media, faking people's deaths, really dumb and hammered in social commentary, this was way too much for a show intended for teenagers. Also, WAY too much focus on Blue Beetle. I like Blue Beetle, but he got way too much screentime, almost like if he was a fan of one or something...

cut him some slack he's great when Tim Sale and/or Batman are involved. Sure he fired Weisman, but so has basically every other animation studio. Because of DC's connection to Warner, for the past few decades DC has dominated in animation. Marvel's fledgling Disney-affiliated animation studio isn't going to get anything comparable to Justice League on any time soon. Heck, if you just go by family friendly TV animation, Marvel has been on top for a good five years now.

At least that's what i've heard
i do still feel that this dark realsim is ironically not nearly as realistic as they hold it to be. as grant morrison said: "We thought that by making your world more violent, we would make it more "realistic", more "adult". God help us if that's what it means."

Oh yeah, and there’s also Earth 2, which ALSO has new stories for classic characters that ignores decades of continuity. DC, have you forgotten the concept of variety?!

Then came Secret Wars, so I decided to buy a collection of Ultimate Spider-Man featuring Miles Morales. Aside from the fact it takes a wee while to really get going, it's actually pretty good, and it's a good starting point provided you're at least slightly familiar with the previous Ultimate continuity. In fact it serves as a nice break from Marvel's divisive late-00s/early-10s output (which I'm currently trying to catch up on). I'm still not tempted to read any other Ultimate books though.

Instead of new stories, they basically retold old ones but made everyone a collasal jerkwad. Riveting.

It was fresh, it was fun, Peter Parker was interesting and relatable, and best of all it started from the beginning so I could get in on the ground floor.
I got into all the titles as they came out: X-Men, Fantastic Four, Ultimates. It was good stuff. It's a shame the whole universe derailed itself and I was angry when it happened, but by that time I knew enough about all the Marvel characters that I finally just switched over to the main continuity.
But yeah... all things considered, Ultimate Marvel was a success story... while it lasted.

Wow Linkara, you have an awesome Venom voice. Maybe you should voice him in the next Spider-Man cartoon.

Who else here thinks that Endgame may have gotten a little inspiration for when Hawkeye went completely off the rails from this comic?

Definitely not from this comic; Ronin existed in the regular 616 universe before this.

Look on the bright side, if the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver ever had kids, they would be demigods. Because, as we all know from the Wrong Turn series, it’s that inbreds are the superior species!

Seven years too late, but... the first printing of issue 1 actually did have the really super dark super muddy coloring, which is probably why the scans were so dark. They brightened it up a LOT for the second printing and eventual trade. (THe colorist's monitor probably wasn't calibrated very well... it was better by the second issue but still muddy.)

And apparently Linkara, Loeb wants to make a Ms Marvel tv show. Yea the guy who had Blob eat Wasp wants to make a tv show of a likeable and more relatable character like Kamala.

To be fair, if his Nova series is of any indication, he's a lot more stable now than when he did Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum (that was 8 years ago, after all).

Coming back here in 2019 has made me realize that if you want superheroes being total assholes done right, you should just ignore this tripe and read The Boys by Garth Ennis.

While the ultimate universe wasn't really my thing I can see the idea of having series that you can just start at number 1 and in order atractive. People who liked ultimate spiderman can enjoy the series in order and maybe move from there or don't and no need to be intimidated by longs lists of must reads or be confused cronologically

Personal gripe on this old ass video, but Ultimate Green Goblin really misses the entire point of the character. The Green Goblin is a costume that Norman Osborn can take on and off just like Spider-Man is a costume for Peter Parker. Both of them reveal inner truths about the people wearing them that can't be boiled down to something as simplistic as, "Bad guy who was always bad and now gets to be bad in the open."
Now, a Hobgoblin that is Harry Osborn who has been, either accidentally or intentionally, doped with the Goblin Serum by Norman Osborn and becomes a monster? That makes sense. Harry is a good person who struggles with living up to his family legacy, the transformation into a monster literalizing that in the form of Norman's selfish and arrogant desire to see his son become him and inadvertently passing on the worst parts of himself. A bigger, badder, meaner Goblin to contrast that Harry is a better person than Norman ever was or ever could be and ultimately a victim of his father's desires.
Bonus points if they ever decided to have Harry learn to control the Goblin transformation to symbolize him embracing his heritage and who he is and choosing to be more than just what his father intended him to be (but they never did).
