I always considered Anarky to be the anti-Batman but less from personality and more based off their conditions. Anarky was born into a dysfunctional family with violence and crime being fairly commonplace. Batman’s solutions to crime (I’m generalizing here, I know this is different with every story) is more or less a band aid solution. He finds people doing crimes, then he stops them and locks them up. Anarky kind of realizes how pointless this is and seeks to combat the causes of crime (poverty, desperation, power, etc). Now, he’s incredibly radical in his approach and can sometimes miss the point but his existence kind of serves as a counter to Batman’s entire existence, he’s challenging Batman’s logic in a way that few other vilains can. Anyways, that’s my long winded explanation of how I few the sociology of a comic book world, hope you enjoyed.

Killer Moth actually really works at what he is - the comedic relief underdog - the loveable loser we all root for. I don't get why so many people online insist on making him a serious threat as if Batman Mythos really needed him to be one. Moth has found his niche within the rogues gallery and he works pretty well within that niche. Also - I don't think it's the design why Anti-Batmen don't really stick - it's their personality. Their Anti-ness is so superficial that it is actually really boring. I mean, it is just as you said, so many of Batman's villains already clearly reflect his personality that a pure "Evil version" isn't needed. And what is the purpose of an Anti-Batman anyway? To have a Villain that is a true equal? Both in physical ability, access to resources, and tactical ability? Well in that case we already have an Anti-Batman who managed to stick around as a serious threat. It's Bane. Bane is everything you would get out of an Anti-Batman with the sole exception that his silhouette isn't a straight-up recoloring of Batman's. Aslo also, dude - the entire loud equals funny joke really hurts your video, man.
killer moth doesn't need to be this super-imposing ultimate threat, but if a guy's entire job is to protect criminals from batman he should be competent enough to win once in a while. even if he'd lose a straight fist-fight, his use of underhanded tactics batman avoids on principle (like guns) should give him enough of an edge to go toe-to-toe.
great video but the sudden changes in volume made it hard as a headphone user. jokes would probably turn out the same without the volume spike maybe have camera shake for emphasis instead so it’s a visual display instead of auditory. either way can’t wait to see the next video
Fr. The bass boost was way too much a headache while just saying the joke would've been hit and the same and would be just as if not funnier. Good stuff though especially moth edit
DC Catman is a really weird but fun take of the character but I prefer the orginal David MerryWeather - Catman from the 40s. Keep up the great work I learned a lot watching this.
The one thing that bothers me about the wrath is that the killer is connected to one of the established characters. One of the most important characters. The cop that did it has to be a Joe Chill. A do nothing nobody who’s only act of note was making Batman/Wrath. But his character being someone who hates the police because one of them got away with murder essentially scot free is amazing. And very deliberately uncomfortably realistic. Any person in the wrong place at the wrong time can get shot and Justice is hard to get.
You could definitely make a great story with Wrath if you change the costume to look more Batman-ish, and make it not Gordon that killed his parents. A random corrupt cop would work much better with the parallels between him and Bats.
@@Private-PotatoPlus, it dirties Gordon character too much that he killed a couple in front of their kid and got away scott free. It doesn’t work with the modern take of him as a incorruptible cop.
I think black mask is the best one. Instead of witnessing his rich parents deaths, he orchestrated it. Rather than use the inheritence to fight crime, he uses it to buy his way in essentially. And where you have the "batman's mask is Bruce Wayne," black mask's mask is... his whole personality now. I think he's perfect reflection. He's the perfect anti for both Bruce and batman
Don't forget Batzarro, who killed his own parents in order to solve the crime, uses guns that have a "!MALB" sound effect, says everything he is thinking out loud, and wears a futility belt!
Batzarro is probably the purest version of Anti-Batman. He uses guns, barely solves crimes, and is generally a super-mutant who runs around, ending lives in the name of his own goals.
I still think The Batman's version of Wrath is the best "Evil Batman" we have that's not a _literal_ evil Batman like Owlman or The Batman Who Talks. He's a great amalgamation of the other anti-Batmen you mentioned. He's got the backstory and look of the original, but the color scheme of Catman helps him stand out against the Dark Knight while not looking completely garish like his comics counterpart. Not to mention Scorn's monochromatic color scheme is a great contrast to the bright and colorful Robin as well, so kudos there. And he's got the inverted morality and M.O. of Killer Moth as a protector of criminals, which really digs into the motivation of Batman and warps it. Wrath's parents were arrested/killed like Bruce's, so he dedicates his life to protecting others against those who wronged him in the past. The catch is, he's protecting evil people from those who wish to seek justice. It's much more interesting than him just being a glorified serial killer with a hate boner for cops.
I think there is also an at least decent anti Batman in “Batman: Detective”. Essentially a criminal that Batman didn’t let die, killed the family of a merc woman who actually trained with Batman before he was Batman, and she decides to wear a full white bat suit and attempts to kill everyone Batman has saved (more street level saving with records rather than universe scale). It kinda ends up being a less valid version of the red hood concept but still has some interesting tidbits. Hell you could consider red hood an evil Batman (he even has done it directly at times) but it’s not much of an exact and he’s usually a good guy nowadays.
I think that killer moth is the perfect anti-Batman. Who is the opposite of a confident, well respected superhero, a failing unrespected super villain.
The Batman Who Laughs is a perfect example of a great idea DC had, run into the ground due to DC having zero sense of self-control. Like the concept and execution of The Batman Who Laughs first appearance is great. Granted his final battle in The Metal series wasn't great but I would argue that the metal series as a whole didn't land great. Still DC knew they had a home run with this character, so if they used him sparingly he could become Batman's Darkside; but instead they milked the character concept to death and overused it to the point where comic fans rolled their eyes and visibly grew annoyed when they saw the character.
@@charlesman8722I agree. His origin story is contrived and is much more concerned with being “cool” and edgy than actually telling a compelling story about Batman descending into madness.
What i hate about these doppelgangers is that you don't really need them to exist. Every villain has the potential to be a dark reflection of the hero. Doc Ock is what Spiderman could've been if he let his resentment stew for years. Green Goblin is what Peter could be if he let his obsession with scholastic excellency over take everything he holds dear, just to prove he wasn't a loser. Two-Face is Batman's zealousness for justice taken to its extreme. These so called doppelgangers are played mostly for aesthetics. You see their costume on the cover, with a spalsh page that says "The coming of Nega-Batman!" And you think "woah! Its like our hero was turned evil! Aint that something!"
I think an interesting angle that could be explored for an Anti-Batman is for his "no killing" policy to be funhouse-mirrored. You don't have to kill anyone to be a villain, and there are fates some might consider worse than death.
Even though calendar man was basically just an elaborate plot device, he works so well that way in the long halloween I loved him as a narrative device that is a part of the pacing and the tone
The problem I'm getting from this is that most of their motivations are just stupid: Killer Moth was basically trying to be a mercenary with a "Batman but for criminals" gimmick, Catman was just board (my mom owns his debut issue and he actually considers becoming a crime fighter before deciding that since Catwoman was reformed at the time he should just fill the void she left), the Wrath's parents were killed by Gordon (ostensibly in self defense) so now he wants to kill all cops, Prometheus was basically raised by his parents to hate justice (without him ever actually learning the meaning of the word). With this in mind, I think that the version of Wrath from The Batman had the best motivation: his parents were criminals who committed crime to support him and his little brother, so as Wrath and Scorn they run interference on Batman and the police because they see super villains like Joker and Penguin as folks trying to make ends meet.
This was really good, looking forward to your next video. If I can make a small request, don't bass boost as hard on the Bruce Wayne joke. I have headphones on and the volume spike was a bit much.
Are you telling me that Wraith and Prometheus are more popular than *Scream this* KILLER MOTH AND CATMAN WHO MIGHT I ADD HAVE HAD MORE ADAPTIONs THAN THOSE TWO KNUCKLES NUTTS!!
Yeah he really is because unlike Batman who just wears a bat themed costume and uses bat themed gadgets Man Bat is an ACTUAL bat man with bat powers like flight and echolocation. In fact in one of his first appearances Man Bat actually tells Batman that he is more bat than him.
You know a way killer moth could be more menacing? Do you know how much people say batman is just a rich man that likes to beat people to a pulp? Make it be killer moth. Make him be a crazy rich guy with a boring life that wants to get out of this boredom by killing innocent people, all to lure batman into a confrontation. A fight with batman might be a great way to get out of boredom
It's funny, Batman doesn't really have a singular popular anti-Batman, but they've tried to work the concept multiple times. Like, there's probably as many evil Batmen as there are Spider-Man clones. I'd love to see a sequel vid. Outside of the ones briefly mentioned but not discussed in the video, a couple more come to mind. Flashpoint Batman isn't a villain, but being Thomas Wayne, he is a Batman who lost son, instead of his parents, and is a Batman willing to kill. IIRC, he even tries to stop Bruce from being Batman at one point to "save" his son? Azrael is a pretty ruthless character who was meant to replace Batman, and I love his depiction in the Arkham games. Jason Todd tries to replace Bruce a couple times, he wears a sick batman outfit after Batman "dies" to Darkside in the main continuity and poses as Batman in Injustice 2. There's also Zur-En-Arrh or whatever he's called. A weird alien/alter ego batman. I haven't read it yet, but I believe Batman Down Below involves a creepy Cthulhu inspired Batman, one who's the embodiment of everything Gotham fears Batman is. Sort of a "Mario the man vs. Mario the idea" scenario. Great video man, looking forward to what other stuff you make.
The reason Killer Moth could afford all that bs was because he just.... kept taking out loans. Loans with banks, loan sharks, and even big villains. It's actually mentioned once that they kept coming after him to get their money back and all his shit gets repossessed
@@TheBatspecter lmaoo I don't think it's below average but if you play these games on the regular that's my first tip, break their weapons, cause you ain't even doing instant takedowns. It's the first thing I ever upgrade on any of these games
Great video. I’ve always hoped we could see more from Wrath. While I do think the New 52 version was a major step down, I did like the addition that he considers his sidekicks completely replaceable. He will murder his Scorns without a second thought, and then replace them. Completely opposite Batman, who actually cares for his robins (but also immediately replaces them when they die)
This was hilarious! As someone who also spends maybe a little too much time thinking about/reading Batman, I'd really love to see another video from you.
Anti-Batmen are kinda funny, because a lot of people write Batman so out of character that specific Batman versions could easily pass as a separate Anti-Batman character, without even changing their backstory or onscreen appearance all that much.
That's a great idea, would help keep a similar look to Batman, if they wanted the uncanny effect Bizzaro and Reverse Flash have. They could even have him be based of a gargoyle?
Batman’s already a sort of Gargoyle with his humanoid bat look. Maybe Wrath could have more personal melee weapons like a trident or a sword? Embody a demonic look to match the sin of his namesake. Then Batman takes on a sort of old testament angel feel.
I didn't think the louder parts of the video would be as loud as they were by the time I uploaded, so that's on me. Loud parts like those won't be in future videos
The perfect Batman doppleganger to me would be someone who came up with the bat vigilante shtick shortly before Bruce did, and is upset that everyone calls him a Batman knockoff when he did it first.
I know this is an older video and it's probably gotten better, but jeez is the whole random loud audio thing super obnoxious in an otherwise pretty good video.
The problem with Owlman is that he's from an alt universe where EVERYONE is their opposite, he doesn't feel special when he lives in the same world with an evil Superman, evil Wonder Woman, etc.
Isn't that sort of the whole point of Earth-3? By that logic, the main Batman doesn't feel special when he lives in the same world as Superman & Wonder Woman
@@TheBatspecter Basically yeah, in my opinion Owlman doesn't feel unique in the same way that Catman and Killer Moth are. They actually exist in the same world as normal Batman so their comparison with him makes sense and actually succeed in portraying an "anti-Batman" or "Batman with a different facet". Owlman's entire reason for being evil is just because he's from a world where every hero is evil, and villainy is expected instead of being good. Don't get me wrong, he's a cool character and a good way to see a villainous Batman, but his world is so inherently different from Bruce's that I can't really count him as an anti-Batman. Maybe if he actually lived in a world similar to ours, where goodness is expected from people, yet he still chose to become the evil Owlman, then I would count him as a different facet of Batman

Ghostmaker is a new amazing character that rivals Batman and has some anti-Batman elements!!! I say this because as a child Ghostmaker saw his parents get threaten, beaten up, and embarrassed by a wealthy family, that forced them to sell out there business. Despite that traumatic experience, he didn't fight crime because of that. He sees crime fighting as a art form and skill he wants to be the best at. If anything Ghostmaker's existence asks the question "what if a hero existed but didn't fight for moral reason?". Which is a interesting idea!!! Especially since Ghostmaker is one of the few characters that is a psychopath BUT isn't a villain and choses to do good, despite his lack of empathy!!! Although to be fair, he does kill criminals because he sees things from a logical not emotional or moral perspective.
@@dc7981 I agree with the Azeral comparison and David Cain to a degree. I say to a degree because although both Ghostmaker and David Cain tried to make the "perfect soldier" with kids. Ghostmaker never domestically physically abused his side kick Phantom 1 and wasn't cruel with training. However Ghostmaker did fail Phantom 1 because he adopted him and was emotionally distance and neglectful as a foster father. He gave him a mansion to live in but never built an actual bound with him because he only was him as a test to make a "better Robin" then Batman. Which obviously is a terrible mentality to have BUT thankfully future Ghostmaker learns to be more considerate and nice to people that he trains (like Clownhunter). Since he realizes being cold hearted isn't going to help teamwork. Unfortunately in the past Phantom 1 "dies" because they were after a villain, Phantom 1 goes off the plan and rushes in to get said villain. Then an explosion happens and he gets stuck under rubble and couldn't get out. So Ghostmaker leaves him to die in order save other people in danger infront of him. Sadly for Phantom 1 he never knew that, so he believes Ghostmaker abandoned him for no reason. Since this is a comic book and no one really stays dead, Phantom 1 makes it out alive and plans to get his revenge. Interestingly enough, when Ghostmaker finally gets to the villain he's more brutal with his killing, which means he was angry that Phantom 1 died. So in away he kinda does care??? But doesn't feel it or express it in a way we do!!! Also despite Ghostmaker's lack of empathy and morals, he's strongly against sexuality harming children. Since when he fought Slade he insulted him by mentioning how he only goes after children!!! Anyway I agree that Ghostmaker has some similarities with both characters BUT his personality is much more different then those characters!!! He's not always serious and can be a playful, sassy, witty, and charismatic asshole!!! Btw I don't know much about Azeral to make an analysis on why there similar or what's there differences. However I hope you enjoyed this long response!!!

When I was reading the Secret Six, I was struck by the realization that Catman is like the reverse of the male-gaze superheroine. He's very consistently depicted with little or no clothes so his peak physique is prominently on display, and in one of his first scenes he's cooking breakfast for the team. Further than that there are two separate characters that see Catman as "the ideal male partner," Cheshire for her own child, and Vandal Savage for his potential grandson/heir. It was just another really cool way Gail Simone plays with gender roles in superhero comics. And also goddamn Deadshot physically can't not flirt with other guys on any team he's on, the homoerotic tension between him and Thomas Blake was insane.
I’ve always said that the villain batman most needs is a specific kind of dark mirror. A batman who has his skills and a similar origin, and even a similar goal of preventing other people from suffering like he did as a child… but without his “no kill” rule. A character who falls under that mindset that “letting the joker live makes you responsible for his victims” A character that would force Batman to downright confront if his code of ethics is only leading to more suffering. Sure there have been characters like this before, but they’re ALWAYS been either incompetent/in over their heads, or lying about their real, villainous motivations. We need a character without that kind of shortcut that takes the easy way out of that debate, and actually addresses things. God I hope we get that character someday.
My favorite Prometheus moment is when he shows up in BoP and Lady Shiva says "nah I'd win" because she had new techniques and thinks his data is out of date but Prometheus one shots her and says he got new data. So then huntress and lady blachawk are like shit I guess we lose.
I still think Jason represents the concept to a tee. Bruce wants to fight and eradicate crime. Jason is smart enough to know it’s a losing battle, so the best way to combat crime is to control it. And he kills whoever can’t be rehabilitated

He's not even consistently a Batman villain.
Actually bane ended up becoming Batman in a Arkham comic which was pretty dope to see
@@shadowclaw7210 thank you! You’d be surprised how many people think deathstroke is a peak human and not a superhuman it’s ridiculous. I remember back in the origins days when people would say that he’s an anti Batman a lot and like …. How? They pretty much have jack in common

@@pedrovallefin8406 exactly
I think black mask is the best one. Instead of witnessing his rich parents deaths, he orchestrated it. Rather than use the inheritence to fight crime, he uses it to buy his way in essentially. And where you have the "batman's mask is Bruce Wayne," black mask's mask is... his whole personality now. I think he's perfect reflection. He's the perfect anti for both Bruce and batman
Missed opportunity
That's also Hush now I think about it...
Don't forget Batzarro, who killed his own parents in order to solve the crime, uses guns that have a "!MALB" sound effect, says everything he is thinking out loud, and wears a futility belt!
The best batman ever

100% agree
4:08 Killer Moth
7:22 Catman

Good thing you didn’t talk about The Batman Who Laughs. He was so complicated that he became The Darkest Knight.
@@alexblake5369he was never a good idea

I loved him as a narrative device that is a part of the pacing and the tone
Great video, you did great with it. (The stutters and stuff in the voice over gave the video a lot of charm)
As in the cartoon The Batman?

Calendar Man? A joke? He's genuinely terrifying, and could actually exist, unlike POISON IVY!
Great video man, looking forward to what other stuff you make.
catman is originally a publish domain comic he got alot of adaptation/take from other media

The reason Killer Moth could afford all that bs was because he just.... kept taking out loans. Loans with banks, loan sharks, and even big villains. It's actually mentioned once that they kept coming after him to get their money back and all his shit gets repossessed

I was NOT expecting to hear Batman Rize of Sin Tzu music
This was hilarious! As someone who also spends maybe a little too much time thinking about/reading Batman, I'd really love to see another video from you.
Anti-Batmen are kinda funny, because a lot of people write Batman so out of character that specific Batman versions could easily pass as a separate Anti-Batman character, without even changing their backstory or onscreen appearance all that much.

I think if Wrath went with a devilish design, using horns rather than ears, then he’d be perfect.

Basically anti hero version of Azrael and David Cain/Orphan

A character who falls under that mindset that “letting the joker live makes you responsible for his victims”
A character that would force Batman to downright confront if his code of ethics is only leading to more suffering.
Sure there have been characters like this before, but they’re ALWAYS been either incompetent/in over their heads, or lying about their real, villainous motivations. We need a character without that kind of shortcut that takes the easy way out of that debate, and actually addresses things.
God I hope we get that character someday.
