  • Hello!
Every now and again there is a breakthrough that happens within one's process. For quite some time, I have been experimenting with acrylics to try and make them look like an oil painting. I think I have finally found a formula that works for me so I thought I would share it with all of you.
So, in this contemporary acrylic portrait I use a combination of realism and abstract elements with a mixture of heavy body acrylics, Golden Open Acrylics and some high flow acrylics.
    The background colors:
Warm Gray - Master's Choice (Hobby Lobby)
Blue Gray - Master's Choice (Hobby Lobby)
Green Gray - Master's Choice (Hobby Lobby)
Warm White - Master's Choice (Hobby Lobby)
Burnt Umber - Liquitex Heavy Body
    Payne's Gray - Liquitex Basics
Skin Tone Mixes with Golden Open Acrylics
    1. Cadmium Red, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White
    2. Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White
    3. Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ochre, Manganese Blue, Titanium White
    4. Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White
    5. Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White
*These are only a few combinations that I use. Play around to find different mixes.
I hope you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! Please leave any questions in the comments!

❤❤❤ thank you so much. I learned so much with this video. I've been selling portraits for years, never went to art school but I always learn so much from you. I have also tried to do some somewhat abstract art because I watch you. I can't get into it fully just yet. I start and it comes back to realism smh, but one day I guess I won't be afraid. Thank you for all that you do. This video is sooooo informative, ty for taking the time to teach so much in so much detail. ❤🎨

So glad I found this post- I normally do oils and recently thought I would do a stencil project- a triptik of the same portrait with three different backgrounds. I would do them in acrylics and spray paint and stencils. Like an Andy Warhol series. All went well until I thought I would just give some form and volume to the face with some acrylic detail work- even with Slo-blend I can not work fast enough- it is so hard to blend a gradient or have subtle shifts in a tint or a shade. It is a poor carpenter that blames his tools but this has been painfully difficult- I keep trying to get the acrylics to behave like oils. Silly me. Live and learn.
Nice work- I like your aesthetic and style- you are the whole package-smart, articulate, talented and yes beautiful- keep posting I look forward to more...Nelson

Hello Sunshine! Thanks for the lesson on mixing skin tones... it's something I'm still working on. I loved your reference photo - you've got a great face - it would have looked fabulous if it looked more like you! 🙂 I took notes and I'll do some swatches with my paints to see how it looks. I love watching you paint. As I was watching I was saying to myself that if you were teaching a painting course and I had the money, I'd come! Well... maybe not if it were winter. LOL. Like you'd do a painting course in winter... Have a great week and look forward to your next painting!

I have a hard time wrapping my mind around warm vs cool colors, tones and how it works together. Not that I’ll ever be able to do anything close.. it would be fun to try though. And you never know, once in a blue moon it might turn out a little better than it would without information to help guide it. The Time painting you created a few weeks ago with the hour glass & lady with the crow is 100% mind blowing.
