This is the song I most associate with my ex. We had a wonderful but tumultuous relationship in the early 90s and ultimately broke up, yet I was still devastated by his untimely death in 2007. RIP Steve.
Erasure have so many great songs to choose from. "Victim of Love" and "Stop" are personal favourites. You're right about the videos and you will love their homage to Abba' s "Take a Chance On Me" from the Abba-esque EP which was their only UK number 1.
@@jedislap8726 Brilliant, I thought I was the only person who remembered Bjorn Again's 'response in kind' release. I love that you actually bought it!!
You finally reviewed one of the best Erasure songs (also recommended are "In My Arms" and "Fingers and Thumbs"). Now maybe you'll watch Laura Branigan's live performance of "The Power of Love."
Erasure is one of my favorite bands. Saw them in concert and had a wonderful time. As many have mentioned, Erasure has many great songs, but one of my favorites that I haven't seen mentioned (sorry, didn't want to go through all the comments) is Don't Say Your Love is Killing Me.
Love Erasure! Discovered them about 20 years ago. They have so many good tunes. You should do reactions to "Perfect Stranger" and "Leave Me to Bleed"!!
What can you expect from Vince Clarke, the man who brought you Depeche Mode, Yazoo and of course Erasure. If you love ABBA you will love Erasure's song "Take A Chance On Me"
Andy Bell has a phenomenal voice and it's just the same live. He did a "Live at Home" concert from his garden during the 2020 lockdown (it's here on YT I think) and was just as amazing as ever. He absolutely killed it. Highly recommend you check it out.
My favorite Erasure song is the lesser-known "Phantom Bride." "Ship of Fools" is also very good - kind of a different sound from their usual techno-pop sound. Vince Clarke has a way of teaming up with great vocalists - speaking of which, it's been a long time since you've reacted to Yazoo. "Walk Away from Love" and "Nobody's Diary" are still waiting for you.
Think I noticed Jay noticing that the chorus has a time change: "The song's chorus features an unusual time signature change from 4/4 to 5/4 for the final line (in which the lyrics are "Harmony, harmony, oh love")."
Other great Erasure songs: Chains of Love Victim of Love Oh l amour Ship of Fools Stop Star Blue Savannah Breath of Life Run to The Sun Take a chance on me (ABBA cover) Lay all your love on me( ABBA cover)
This is possibly my favourite Erasure song, because not only is it a fantastic tune but also because this was 'my' era of the band. So it's kind of bittersweet that it's also basically the point where people in general stopped caring about them. Their imperial phase between 1986-91 (essentially, Oh L'Amour to Love To Hate You), in contrast, was before I got into music. And actually they dropped off just a bit with their couple of singles around the turn of 1991-2. Then, though, they had the masterstroke of releasing the _Abba-esque EP_ (featuring Voulez-Vous, Take A Chance On Me, etc.) that June. It coincided with ABBA's own return from critical purgatory - it's hard to credit now, but for the decade or so after they broke up, up until the _Mamma Mia!_ musical opening and the _ABBA Gold_ collection coming out, they were generally a byword for naff, passé and uncool - and it of course gave Andy (and Vince) the chance to be even more gloriously camp and OTT than usual. It gave Erasure their first and only Number One single here in the UK, and the release of the chart-topping compilation _Pop! The First 20 Hits_ that November cemented their legacy. With hindsight, though, the party was nearly over. By spring 1994 when Always came out I was old enough to be appreciating new music when it hit the radio, and I immediately loved it - and it flew straight to no.4, their ninth single to reach the Top 5. The album _I Say I Say I Say_ soon crashed in at Number One, and within a few months that became the first ever cassette I bought with my own money (having only owned a couple at all previously) because I really liked both Always and its follow-up single, Run To The Sun, which became their fifteenth Top 10-er when it reached no.6 that summer. Yet the latter almost immediately exited the charts again, spending only three weeks in the Top 40, and the album soon followed it, far faster than their previous releases had done. And that, in retrospect, marked the exact moment where Erasure's commercial fortunes dived off a cliff. The track I Love Saturday was the obvious choice for a third single, but did no more than bob around the lower end of the Top 20 when it was released in the December. Their seventh, self-titled album came out less than a year later, but was self-consciously more serious and lacked the sugar-rush pop brilliance that had always defined their work, and it bombed out at no.14, bringing a streak of five chart-topping albums in a row to an abrupt end. And henceforth they'd tip firmly and completely over the line from being contemporary hitmakers to being a 'legacy act'. They _would_ eventually have two more Top 10 singles, but both came thanks to being released in the traditionally slack New Year market (a time of year when UK record companies would occasionally take advantage of the post-Christmas lull in big new releases to bag an act some unexpectedly high chart placings) - a cover of Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill in January 2003, leading the album _Other People's Songs_ that did exactly what it said on the tin, and Breathe in January 2005 from the otherwise ignored _Nightbird_ album. But, again, both were brief in-and-out showings. Certainly there was never another point where Erasure were even close to being big again in the public consciousness. So Always represents, in some ways, their last great high-water mark. But it is and always will be fantastic. (And _I Say I Say I Say_ remains a really underrated album: it's ten four-minute gems, lovingly and expertly crafted, and well worth a listen I'd say... I'd say, I'd say.)
You said it all for me. I was 14 when this came out & it was the glorious music video that made me check them out as a group. I appreciated the artistry of it all & it was a song I always associated with a family friend I called Auntie Paul who passed from AIDS in 1992. I made his partner cry getting him to listen to it. This song & RuPaul's Supermodel always take me back to that era to remember.
I'm sorry but I just really disagree with a lot of what you wrote here. Some facts might ve accurate, but Erasure continues to release great. Albums. Along with Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys and New Order, etc.....
@@memoryboy8292 Oh, I'm not making any negative judgement on the _quality_ of their subsequent work. Quite the reverse, I'm saying it's a shame that the public at large lost interest after this. But it's undeniable that they _did_ lose interest. Like it or not, Always is the last Erasure song that gets some kind of broad popular recognition. After this, they're effectively reduced to a fanbase-only act, regardless of the occasional spike in critical praise for later albums. Which is what tends to happen to most acts of a similar vintage, of course. Their peers the Pet Shop Boys, for instance, have kept getting reliably decent reviews for longer, and retained the ability to at least chart singles solidly in the Top 20 through to around 2006 - but they too stopped being 'mainstream' hitmakers around the same point as Erasure: Go West in 1993 is their final massive hit, with a word for Se A Vida É in 1996 as their only subsequent one that really knocked on the door of mainstream popularity. And I'm a massive Depeche Mode fan, and really love several of their 21st-century albums, but I'm perfectly happy to acknowledge that their most recent hit anyone outside the fanbase would potentially recognise is It's No Good from 1997, _possibly_ Precious from 2005. That's the way it goes. It's just an odd quirk with Erasure that the watershed moment can be located so precisely: in essence, the second week of Run To The Sun's chart run.
Hi Jay and Amber, Erasure are Andy Bell on vocals and Vince Clarke on keyboards and synthesisers, They are still going strong today in 2024, Andy Bell is now 61 years old and Vince Clarke is now 64 years old 😀😀 Other Erasure songs to check out are : Sometimes Ship of Fools Chains of Love Drama Vince Clarke was also in 2 other 80s bands, Depeche Mode and Yazoo 😀😀
The more speeded-up version of this song played in the clubs was MUCH better than the single/video version. I remember this song being played like crazy in the clubs in 1994. Chains of Love is probably their "signature" song. For Jordan, lead singer is Andy Bell
Part of my early childhood in the 90s was spent watching MTV (one of the few English channels we had access to). I would have been about 6, when this song came out and I was mesmerized by this music video, I'd plop down right in front of the television whenever it came on.
This is one of my favourite groups from the 80's, I used to listen to this when I was in the army in 1989, and if I close my eyes, it takes me back to my dorm with the brothers I was training with when I was just 17, the other group from the 80's I loved was Pet Shop Boys.
I know and love this song but don't think I've seen the video before, so I LOL'ed near the end when I saw the cut-out of Vince Clarke's face with the flowers on it (he's the non-singing half of the duo and a pioneer in electronic pop music) 🎶Further Erasure recommendations: Who Needs Love Like That?, Oh L'amour, Victim of Love, Chains of Love, Chorus
My favourite Erasure songs are this one, Sometimes and A Little Respect (which you’ve reacted to), Ship Of Fools and Victim of Love. I was in my teens in the 80’s. Great music. Had great nights in Starlight Nightclub
One of my favoritie bands that I've seen in concert multiple times! I agree with all the songs suggested below. Please check out more! Chains of Love is top of my list.
When I was younger my local radio station in Dallas (106.1 Kiss FM) would always play a much faster dance version of this song. I loved it! It took me years to realize this was the original version
Andy Bell is unbelievable. His range is incredible. Vince Clarke is the synth master too starting with Depeche Mode. Need to do more Erasure. You’ve just barely skimmed the surface on their abundant catalogue of music. They have so many hits and great catchy tunes. Really appreciate it. Thanks!
Love Erasure! So many college memories. Whenever my college crew gets together, there is always Erasure being played. “A Little Respect” is a classic. ❤
One of my favorite songs of all time guys! It's brilliant and doesn't get as much love as it should. It's unusual but absolutely amazing. Andy Bell is a brilliant singer and together with Vince Clarke they created so much magic!
It took me a while when I was younger to realize this version existed. The radio station I listen to always played the dance version and I thought that was the original lol
I love Andy Bell's voice. Listen to him compared to Alison Moyet - another singer that Vince Clarke collaborated with. You'll probably hear some similar vocal qualities. I know you've listened to a few of her songs, too. If you choose to do another, I'd recommend "All Cried Out." I also think she'd be a brilliant guest for your "creators" interviews! And, please! You've gotta listen to Oleta Adams' "Get Here" for a Female Friday soon, please. :)
Erasure did an EP of 5 ABBA tracks, Voulez vous, gimme gimme gimme, SOS, Lay all your love on me, Take a chance on me. Probably the only band that could pull it off
The really joyful 'bonus' aspect to Erasure doing the _Abba-esque_ EP of classic ABBA covers in their own distinctive style, of course, was the response of the great ABBA tribute band Bjorn Again - who promptly put out a two-track single of classic Erasure hits (Stop! and A Little Respect) done in distinctive ABBA style, and called it _Erasure-ish_ 🤣
Love Amber's new hairstyle... how long has she had it like that lol. Anyway, this is a great song from the favourite duo of all time with an absolutely killer chorus, although it's '90's' not '80's' as your erronuously specify. This was perhaps their last bona fide hit, so at least they made it a good one. Which Erasure hit should you do next? Gotta be 'BLUE SAVANNAH' honestly it's perhaps their best track... I'l be there in a year when you get to it. ^^
I think Vince Clarke would be the first to admit that his voice isn't much to shout about, as it were. Andy Bell's voice, on the other hand, is a thing of wonder... 😉
I'm 75 & I have never heard of Erasure. I have a huge rolodex of songs in my head. They sound like a trip to the Never Ending Story. I liked synth-pop bands. Guess I was only familiar with synth-pop bands that encompassed various genres. The Human League, Eurythmics, Tears for Fears, A-ha, Pet Shop Boys.
That's fair enough and it depends where you're from, I would say. In the UK, they are one of the most successful duos of all time. They were voted Best British Group at the British Music Awards in 1989. In the USA, they had three top 20 hits, including this song.
Erasure was bigger in dance clubs in the US. Had a huge following, but not as mainstream. Bigger in the UK. Beautiful! Pull up their greatest hits on you tube.

This is the normal version. There's a speeded-up version (which has already been mentioned in another comment), but this is the regular-speed one!
It took me a while when I was younger to realize this version existed. The radio station I listen to always played the dance version and I thought that was the original lol
Stop was always a fav of mine but every song is amazing x
My fav song by them is BLUE SAVANNAH.
Vince Clark and Andy Bell wrote amazing songs together. The Innocents album is pop perfection. 'Weight of the World' off that album is a banger.
Great song by these guys. ❤❤❤❤
Rob Squad Reactions, great content I loved it
Erasure did an EP of 5 ABBA tracks, Voulez vous, gimme gimme gimme, SOS, Lay all your love on me, Take a chance on me.
Been waiting for this one 🙌
Love Amber's new hairstyle... how long has she had it like that lol. Anyway, this is a great song from the favourite duo of all time with an absolutely killer chorus, although it's '90's' not '80's' as your erronuously specify. This was perhaps their last bona fide hit, so at least they made it a good one. Which Erasure hit should you do next? Gotta be 'BLUE SAVANNAH' honestly it's perhaps their best track... I'l be there in a year when you get to it. ^^
This is 90s Erasure and still an amazing sound. Along with Pet Shop Boys I would say the greatest electro pop duo's of all time
OH L'AMOUR is about as Gorgeous as a Song can Be :-D
Great song and band. Vince Clark has an amazing voice and their sound is so unique. Check out - "Chains of Love", "Stop" and "Drama"
I think Vince Clarke would be the first to admit that his voice isn't much to shout about, as it were. Andy Bell's voice, on the other hand, is a thing of wonder... 😉
There was a techno remix of this song that used to play at the club back in the day that would bring the house down. Unbelievable dance song
Loved this song as a kid, still love it as an adult
