I'm a 53 yr old black man and this is my favorite band of all time. I actually live not to far from you Jay (Mustang area), grew up singing in church in Guthrie and discovered The Cure and this song when I moved to Riverside, California in 1985. The only time I heard music like this was in John Hughes movies and ironically my life turned into one shortly after moving to California. Robert Smith looked on the outside as to what I felt like on the inside back in those days. The Cure got me through a lot of rough times in my youth and is still my favorite band even though I've overcome a lot since then. Forgiveness is the key.
I hear you. I'm 51 and had a very tough and painful childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood in a small town in Alabama, and the Cure helped me through some of the worst times. I'm so happy that they just released a new album, finally, after so many years! I agree with you about forgiveness being the key to overcoming a painful past too. Thanks for your great comment!
The Cure is definitely one of my Top 6 favorite bands of all-time along with The Beatles, AC/DC, Van Halen, Depeche Mode, and R.E.M. How’s that for an eclectic bunch? In 2024, there does not appear to be any artist capable of this kind of SOUND, CREATIVITY, ORIGINALITY, and INNOVATION. This 39 year old song is more modern sounding than anything in 2024. You’ve got great taste!
Probably a bit long-winded for the channel, but I've always loved Tape/Open, especially with the old-school "waiting for the concert to start" vibes with the video footage from the Show tour: ruclips.net/video/7gMYW8M4Ye4/видео.html :) And then continue with the Show versions of Fascination Street, From the edge of the deep green sea and Never Enough :)
Haven't been on the internet much for several weeks due to working some insane hours (day off at last today),but I'd also like to say it's great to see you in a good frame of mind again Jay.
Jay great to see you and Amber back .Ya'll have been very much missed and in my thoughts daily.. Welcome back bud. .Welcome back both of you wonderful people. thank you
oh my yes!! this is definitely a must in the cure catalog...along with inbetween days, fascination street, the walk, the love cats, caterpillar, let's go to bed.....shall I go on????
Robert Smith is not only a musical original, he's a thoroughly decent guy who really cares about the band's fans. Their live shows are usually three hours long, and on their last US tour Robert made sure that ticket prices stayed reasonable, even insisting that Ticketmaster reduce their fees. I've seen them play live 7 times over 35 years and can't wait to see them again when they tour with their new album.
Been a fan since 1983 when I was 13. Being South African there was little chance of me seeing them live. Eventually I saw the on 2019 when they came to South Africa. Was a surreal evening with my best friend and my daughter seeing them live.
Absolutely brilliant album. However, a VERY dfferent vibe to this song. No lifting spirits to be found on there. Just long instrumental arrangements and much, much devastation, I'm not completely sure if I'd recommend that album to anyone in recovery of mental health issues. Hope Jay's all good.
'The Lovecats', to be exact! 😄 That was the first song by them I'd ever heard! 😀 I remember thinking, "What a weirdo!", and had anyone told me back then that he'd still be in the Biz in 40 years' time, I would've laughed my head off 😅
I am so happy to see you two! It's amazing how you can grow to care about someone you've never met. I really hope that things are going better! I'm so glad you did this version with the horns. The song was remastered and that part was left out of the new version, which is a shame. When I was in college in the 80s, going to visit my long distance boyfriend, I'd play this song. The sense of excitement, and looking forward to it was perfectly summed up by "I thought this day would never end, I never thought this night would ever be so close to me." Great pick! Now you have GOT to do "Hot Hot Hot", "Why Can't I Be You", "Never Enough", "Lovecats"...the list goes on and on and on.
Loved this reaction! We saw The Cure a few years back and I was really impressed at how great the band still sounded live. They played for hours and Robert Smith's voice has not changed at all. He sounded fantastic. It was a groove.
The Cure are such a great Art Rock band! You know most really great bands like Led Zeppelin or the Doors have their characters in the band which is usually the front man, that peaks people's interest in the band and Robert always intrigues me...lol
"Mint Car" is another classic of The Cure that is excellent. FYI - The Cure just released another album on November 1st, called "Songs Of A Lost World". 🙂
There are so many wonderful songs to explore from The Cure. Some of my favorites are How Beautiful You Are, Hot Hot Hot, Charlottes Sometimes, Jumping Someone Else’s Train and 10:15 On a Saturday Night.
I'm 53 now and when this came out I was 14 and the 'new wave / alternate' music scene had already pulled a number of us into Depeche Mode, and this fell right into place alongside. To be honest, the entire album this song is from, "The Head On The Door" is brilliant.
Jay, great to see you here bro. Yep, The Cure is great for driving bass, obviously people have mentioned Fascination Street and A Forest, but I'd say check out some other early Cure as well - Primary, Play For Today in particular, and Amber would definitely totally love a certain solo on a certain instrument on A Night Like This (from the same album this is from).
Yes!! This is a special song for me, I loved it without knowing who they are! I immediately ran to the DJ booth in the club to find out their name, but he thought I meant another song. It tppk going to see them in concert for the first time to realize the band I already loved made this!!
Hey I absolutely love you guys! Y’know all of these musical journeys we’re travelling with together, is so healthy and rewarding! Music stimulates, soothes, massages, hugs and heals us on so many levels. It reminds, teaches, criticises, pleads, loves then leaves us in awe. It’s provides us with an intimacy, comfort, and exhilaration that feels the same whether you’re alone or not. It is always there to help keep our hearts, minds and souls, loving, open and alive! Long may it continue ❤❤❤
The song 'Close To Me', by the British band The Cure, is a composition that mixes feelings of anxiety, anticipation and a certain dose of surrealism. Released in 1985, on the album 'The Head on the Door', the song stands out for its catchy rhythm and the striking voice of Robert Smith, leader and vocalist of the band. The lyrics reflect an internal struggle, an anguished wait that seems to have more to do with internal feelings than with external events. The chorus 'I've waited hours for this, I've made myself so sick' suggests an anticipation that causes discomfort, an anxiety that manifests itself physically. The expression 'I wish I'd stayed asleep today' can be interpreted as a desire to avoid reality, to remain in a state of unconsciousness where worries and fear cannot reach the lyrical self. The repetition of the idea that he never thought that day or night could be 'so close' suggests a feeling of surprise and perhaps fear at the proximity of something or someone. The song also plays with the idea of reality versus dreams. The lines 'If only I was sure that my head on the door was a dream' indicate an uncertainty about what is real and what is not, a blurring of the line between lived and imagined reality. The mention of 'head on the door' may be a metaphor for banging one's head against the door, a way of expressing frustration or a desire to escape. The song, with its catchy melody and introspective lyrics, is a classic example of the post-punk and new wave style for which The Cure are known, and continues to resonate with listeners who identify with its universal themes of doubt and the search for understanding.
Since it's getting close to Christmas time, let me be the first one to request this song because it was requested last year and you guys never got around to it. Dan fogelberg- another auld Lang syne!! You guys MUST do it PLEASE!!
Jordan, so happy to see that you seem to be in a good place right now! Gather strength from Amber and your family! Was thinking that you were just super down because of your beloved Sooners and Bengals not up to snuff! Trust me, as a Husker fan, I'm working on 15 years of frustration... Be good to yourself, and be receptive to the love your "extended" family will give to you! Peace and love to the Rob Squad! BTW, The Cure has such a VIBE!
Finally!!! One of the best songs in the 80's!!! This is one of the reasons I loved The Cure in my childhood and love them till now. Best regards from Chile!!! (A great hug for you both with all my love)
HI Jay and Amber, Great to see you both. Very proud of you Jay for sharing your feelings the other day, not easy to do.(especially for a bloke) Cheers and love from Adelaide Australia
Jay wearing an Outkast shirt is a funny coincidence since The Cure performed alongside Outkast on the BottleRock Napa festival and they have great respect for eachother. The Cure has been my favorite band ever since I discovered them in the early 90’s. I know no other band that has crossed so many genres. From postpunk to goth to jazz to funk, noiserock, coldwave, psychedelic folk and so on. They are legends.
Children this Grandma has been given the Cure today. My boys. My absolute favorite Cure song. Thanks for making me smile and dance on this glummy fall day. Needed this. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
I'll admit I haven't heard a lot of their songs but one I do remember is "Burn". It's from the movie "The Crow" in 1994. Great movie you guys would like too.
“Close to Me” is yet another remarkable song by The Cure. In 2024, there does not appear to be any artist capable of this kind of SOUND, CREATIVITY, ORIGINALITY, and INNOVATION. This 39 year old song is more modern sounding than anything in 2024.
That was Beachy Head, where the wardrobe went over the cliff into the sea. I often walk along that hilltop or along the coastline. First time I’ve seen this video for ages. I used to play this on the duke box in the pub most weekends. Brings back good memories.
My friend and I have seen The Cure countless times and it is always an experience. Robert Smith still sounds phenomenal. And he adores his fans. Last time we saw them he spent so long at the end of the concert just soaking in the love. Plus ticketmaster refunded part of the tickets because he fought to keep the prices lower. ❤

👍🏴
British. Awesome
Jay, it's good to see you back and smiling. I've been praying for you two.

London Calling is The Clash
“Fascination Street”. You’d die for the bass line in that.
So much this. 4 bar bass riff repeating from the very begining to the very end and it's amazing.
My sentiments exactly & was about to suggest the same 😅
This and Burn from the original The Crow movie soundtrack. I think both Jay and Amber would love those.
Yes. And, in fact, I'm going to listen to that right now :)
Probably a bit long-winded for the channel, but I've always loved Tape/Open, especially with the old-school "waiting for the concert to start" vibes with the video footage from the Show tour: ruclips.net/video/7gMYW8M4Ye4/видео.html :)

Yes, yes, yes!
Lovecats is a fun cure song!
A must.
And Caterpillar Girl! All are some of the Cure's happy songs!
Best song ever
The absolute pure beauty of Robert Smith is that he is STILL the same young boy he was when he first started making music. He has NEVER changed
Robert Smith is not only a musical original, he's a thoroughly decent guy who really cares about the band's fans. Saw them in Frankfurt in 2022 for 65€ reserved seats. I'd like to see other bands but tickets run around €200
You guys need to do their song “Why Can’t I Be You?” because it will get you up out of your chairs to dance!
Yes, love that one too!
They just dropped their first new album in 16 years last Friday!
And I’m certainly picking up what they’re dropping. Good stuff, even after so long!
It is so amazing! ❤

"Weirdly cool" is a perfect description of The Cure.
Welcome back legends, so glad to see a smile on your face Jay, you’re a trooper mate 👍

'The Head on the Door" is the name of one of The Cure's albums.
Look for their cover of "Purple Haze." It brings the funk and will NOT disappoint.

What a great band! I saw them for the first time in NYC. In 1980. I have seen them a number of times. Never get tired.
This is my favorite The Cure song in a MASSIVE catalog of great music. It's the OG one for me.
Im 58 and this song takes me back to the 80s in High School. Love Robert Smith. ❤️
Great to see you smiling Jay! London Calling is indeed by The Clash and the singer of The Cars was Ric Ocasek, but sadly he passed away in 2019.
Both lead singers passed away sadly.
@@angelajakem366 Benjamin Orr was the other co-lead singer for the Cars

The Cure was pretty much the proto-goth band along with Siouxsie & The Banshees. Love their stuff!
And Bauhaus ..Bella lugosis dead.. is a classic Goth anthem
