  • Roads and bridges are things that are used to travel more efficiently from place to place. They certainly help when it comes to crossing water or great heights between mountains, although those same traits also make these passages absolutely terrifying. These are the Scariest Bridges And Roads You Can Travel On. We wouldn’t recommend going to any of them. Just trust us.

#8 - Zhangjiajie Glass Walk Bridge
Just a year ago, China opened a breathtaking glass skywalk that had been added to Hunan’s mountainous landscapes. The winding bridge is 1,410 feet long and, as you can see from these frightening photos, it hovers 984 feet above the ground. This would be the very last place in the world you would find us. You’re on your own if you want to go check this scary bridge out.
    #7 - Lake Pontchartrain Causeway
You might be able to guess why the bridge in this picture made it into this video just by looking at it. It’s not particularly high, and it actually only sits 16 feet above the water. The bridge connects the two Louisiana towns of Metairie and Mandeville. It stretches an incredible 24 miles across the lake. If that wasn’t scary enough, once you get about eight miles into the bridge, you no longer have a visual of land.
#6 - Captain William Moore Bridge
Although the bridge in this photo isn’t all that scary to look at, once you find out about the surroundings and the structural integrity of this bridge, you might just change your mind. This bridge is located in Alaska and it crosses over an ACTIVE earthquake fault. The engineers who designed the bridge planned for the potential disaster and only anchored one end of the bridge securely. Now, when the ground trembles and shifts, the bridge won’t just be torn apart. However, we want to know how it’s still safe with only one end secured. How does that work?
    #5 - Millau Viaduct, France
The bridge in this picture gives us the same thrilling fear as riding a roller coaster. The bridge pictured here is the Millau Viaduct located in France. The tallest part of the bridge, from the valley floor to tip of the mast is 1,125 feet tall, which is taller than the Eiffel Tower! It may be less than two miles in length, but this is another path we just aren’t going to bother taking.
    #4 - The Confederation Bridge
This bridge located in Canada made it into this video not because it is incredibly tall and you’re scared of heights, but because it is a long eight miles to the other side. You can see just how long it is in this picture. While that in itself doesn’t seem to shiver worthy, the fact that it is the longest bridge crossing over ice cold water in the world, does. Yes, there are ones that are miles longer, but supposedly not over such freezing waters. This one billion dollar bridge probably won’t just dump you in the water as it crumbles, but that fear factor that it will is still alive and well.
    #3 - Hussaini Hanging Bridge
Hanging bridge is right! Though it should really be called “hanging by a thread bridge,” just look at the mess in this picture, someone come collect their granny, she needs help! This rickety cable and wood bridge is located in Pakistan, and you couldn’t pay us enough to cross it. The bridge crosses over the rapidly flowing Hunza River and the tattered and worn remains of the previous bridges hang right next to the one being currently used. To make this bridge that much more unbearable, it was swallowed up by flood waters in 2010. Although there has been a newer one built, it doesn't seem any safer.
    #2 - Monkey Bridges
If you told us that we would have to walk across the scary skinny bridge pictured here, we would have laughed into next week. There’s just no way. Even though this bridge seems like a joke in a movie, these “monkey” bridges are used as a quick passage in several parts of Vietnam. The name “Monkey” bridge comes from the stooped posture you have to adopt when crossing. Just so you know how crazy this bridge is, it is exactly as it looks in the picture; the bridge is made from a single bamboo log with one or two handrails. If you think crossing this is a good idea, best of luck to you and we’ll see you down at the bottom of the river, since you’re certainly falling in.
    #1 - Eshima Ohashi Bridge
This terrifying bridge wasn’t a nightmare constructed by an architect but if you looked at this picture of the bridge, you would think it was. This mile long bridge spans across Lake Nakaumi and links the city of Matsue to the city of Sakaiminato. The reason for the sudden climb in the bridge is meant to allow entire barges or ships underneath without incident. Although this bridge looks absolutely terrifying at about a 45-degree angle, it is actually not that steep, and a side view of the bridge shows that the highest point is reached with a gradual incline. It’s not at all how it appears.

I found some mistakes or mispronunciations in this video, the ones I had the most trouble with are:
    1) The Mackinac Bridge is pronounce Ma-kuh-naa, I have driven over this bridge several times and have enjoyed the sound of my tires on the steel deck.
    2) The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is in Virginia NOT Maryland as it crosses the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The tunnel portion is so ships can enter and exit the bay. The thrumming of a ships propeller is a sound you don't forget as you go through the tunnel. There is a Chesapeake Bay Bridge (Gov. William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge) in Maryland, but there are no tunnels as far as any maps or the state show.

@@kathrinelaws1359, I know what the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is as I also traveled through it on U.S. 13. It travels from the Little Creek/Norfolk area to the Eastern Peninsula of Virginia. My father was stationed at the D&S Piers at Norfolk Naval Station, and my Scout troop went camping at Savage Neck Dunes Nature Preserve so we could assist in cleaning up the area and we traveled from Virginia Beach where my troop was based.
Some of the scouts would see who could hold their breath through each tunnel section.

#9 Correction. The narrator has her bridges confused. There are 2 bridges in Maryland called Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The first is as the narrator states connects Maryland's Eastern Shore and Western Shore (Annapolis to Kent Island). The narrator claims this bridge has an underwater tunnel. The Bay Bridge does NOT have a tunnel. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, as the name suggests, has the underwater tunnel. You have two bridges confused: the Chesapeake Bay bridge runs as you say between the western and eastern shores of Maryland. I have driven it, and even at night, sometimes in the wind, it is not scary, unless you are a real scardy cat. You talk about the tunnel in the bridge, that is not this bridge, that is the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel. That bridge runs from the lower tip of Delmarva (in Virginia) across to the Virginia Beach, Virginia area. The trip on this bridge is rather cool, sometimes you are above the Chesapeake other times you are below it.

They confused the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland, near Annapolis, with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, in Virginia, at the mouth of the Chesapeake. They showed pictures of the former, and it is a scary bridge - very high, takes a turn in mid air, and it just looks rickety. The first time I went over it was foggy, and up top, looking down on the fog, we could see the top of a Navy vessel coming under the bridge. They have signs as you approach saying that they have people to drive you and your car for you, because every day they get people white knuckling and just stopping in the middle of the thing. It does NOT have an underwater tunnel section.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia has a long causeway over water, a tunnel between two artificial islands and a tall span over a shipping lane. The tunnel is for some of the large ships that don't fit under the tunnel. Some can only pass over the tunnel section at high tide.

I used to not be scared of bridges... Now I am. In 2007 one of our major bridges, the 35W bridge in Minnesota, collapsed. After the collapse there was more attention focused on bridge safety and repair. Minnesota has over 1200 bridges that are deemed structurally deficient. We learned that a large amount of bridges were unsafe, some bridges weren't monitored/repaired ever, the funding for urgent bridge repairs or replacement bridges is hard to find. What is scary is that Minnesota ranked 40th in the country for the percentage of bridges deemed to be deficit... So we are one of the best states for "safe" bridges. So yes, bridges are scary to me.

We, in Michigan, also have an annual Bridge Walk. Monday, Labor Day morning, the bridge is closed to through traffic and you can walk the entire span. Up to 100,000 people do it.
If you want to be scared,, the two center lanes are a steel grid to relieve wind pressure. The grid squares are quite wide,, about 2.2 inches, 6 cm, . You can look down the 200 feet directly beneath you to the water as you walk.
The only year that I know of that the Bridge walk was cancelled, it was cancelled because of high winds, 25 to 30 knots? Mostly at your back. The Bridge Walk began as usual at exactly 7AM, and 20 minutes later it was closed. The bridge was swaying laterally so rapidly and so far that if you stopped, you were immediately knocked down, your feet taken sideways out from under you. However,, as long as you continued to walk,,, and laughing,, not look down,, you felt like it was a drunk walk. Don't look down,, it was disconcerting to see the bridge going sideways under your feet, and don't stop walking. At the center of the mainspan, the bridge was shifting laterally almost a full 8 feet ,but rather slowly, gracefully, 10 or 12 second period? And on a 3,800 foot mainspan,,, 8 feet is really nothing. In a car you would never notice. It was a fun walk.

That Kuandinsky bridge is not a wooden bridge, it’s what used to be known as a box girder bridge and it was not built for vehicles. It was a railroad bridge that was abandoned when the newer truss bridge in the background was built to carry heavier rail traffic. The wood on top is simply the old bridge ties that the rails were fastened to. Nobody is ever going to maintain that bridge-it’s been abandoned.

30 years ago the bridge was one way up and 1 way back so if there was a disabled car on the bridge it would hold up traffic forever Now there are 2 bridges 1 that goes up and one that goes back with 2 lanes on each part...Well at-least that is what I remember I haven't been on it since 2003.

But overall, since that August 31st is the busiest travel day in France, it would’ve been quicker since that the 8 hour journey turned out to be 12 hours.

The Atchafalaya Basin Bridge is a 14 mile long bridge that stretches over swamp lands infested with alligators. Even though you have a low chance of falling off the bridge or the bridge collapsing it’s still scary enough to keep you on edge while your on it.

Crushing Crusher it's a great way to see the swamps for free! I would've elected BOTH lake Charles bridges for Louisiana though!

Please, the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge on I-10 is nothing. The Mississippi River and Lake Charles bridges both have that beat in terms of how scary they are...

Do they have a weird phobia of bridges?

You mixed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel in Virginia in one they are two separate bridges

  • @aday1637
    @aday1637 2 года назад +1

FACTUALLY INCORRECT VIDEO: The 'bay' bridge in MD mentioned does not have any tunnels as you stated. The bridge/tunnel complex that crosses the bay at it's mouth, that contains bridges and tunnels starts and ends in Virginia. If you are going to make videos you may want to cross the bridge in your mind to bring the brain cells together.

I just want to say that you got your Bridges mixed up. You got the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel which is located in Virginia mixed up with the Bay Bridge in Maryland the Bay Bridge in Maryland does not have any tunnels. However both Bridges are scary as hell. Also on your video you should have mentioned the fact about how many tractor and trailer trucks had gone off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and tunnel within the last few years.

I always wondered about how many people died tragically on that bridge.

I'm not sure but I know at least 3 have gone into the Chesapeake bay with in the last 3 years.

@@vanessajones3945 Someone I went to school with was killed on the Bay Bridge when her car broke down and she started walking back toward the toll booths. A driver didn't see her in the dark and hit her. I think about that and the trucks and cars that have gone off the bridge every time I have to go across (with someone else driving--I can't do it).

I can still see Cuban People Fishing off of most of these bridges. I would be one of them.

I live in Michigan. I've been across the Mackinac Bridge least 10 times. You can drive yourself or you let someone drive you like you said. The highest point is 150 ft above the water. The Mackinac Bridge is the only toll item in Michigan you have to pay a toll to go across the bridge. Also the Mackinac Bridge is part of Interstate 70. The Mackinac Bridge is an experience you would not forget. Only one thing makes original special. A car maker went out production because of the Mackinac Bridge and the EPA. One of the worst cars ever made the Yugo. Thank you Mackinac Bridge and EPA the worst cars ever made.

It's I75 over the Mackinac Bridge. Michigan doesn't have an I70.

Did the 3 in the US, none were scary in the least. My favorite was Mackinaw. I drove it on a very cold winter day and an ice cutter went right under me as I crossed the channel. Cool.

Not sure what you mean by “the 3 in the US.” The video lists the Tappan Zee, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (they actually confused two different bridges here), the Mackinaw, the Lake Pontchartrain, and the Alaska bridge (the Captain William Moore). I’ve driven both the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (the one that’s completely in Maryland) and the Chesapeake Bridge-Tunnel (which is at least partly in Virginia), as well as the Tappan Zee (the old one) and the Lake Pontchartrain. I didn’t find any of them scary, although I might have felt differently about the Tappan Zee if I’d known about its structural problems. I’ll have to drive the others!
