Digital Revolution - The revenge of the nerds | Christoph Holz | TEDxFHKufstein

From ridiculed outsiders nerds became the creators of the future. The future is not even created anymore, it’s programmed. We make algorithms and then the algorithms make us. With great power comes great fun? Not really. We have not been prepared for that responsibility. We just wanted to play. On the other hand, fairness is overrated: Darknet, Social Media, AI and what not - blaming digitalization for society shortcomings might be good for your self-esteem. If you have a scapegoat you don’t need to think about yourself. Maybe the three thought experiments in this TEDx talk help to understand digital transformation in a humane and optimistic way: Why does Captain Picard have no wallet? What is Facebook lacking to become a real government? Does Google have a future? These thought experiments don’t predict the future, but they offer new perspectives. Christoph considers himself a nerd. As a public speaker he focusses on overcoming digital anxiety in society and achieving responsibility for IT nerds. Christoph studied rocket and computer science, is a startup founder, Silicon Valley entrepreneur, university lecturer and a real cyborg. As a business angel he invests in digitization, A.I., blockchain and co-living from Brazil to Singapore. He is known to the public as a TV expert, e.g. on CNBC, Sat1 or N-TV. During his inspiring talks with surprising anecdotes and humor he’s explaining opportunities of the new digital world. He asks whether the Digital Revolution really should be called a revolution. I’ve always thought that about jobs lost due to digitization: if a robot can do your job then your job makes you a robot. On the other hand digitization makes the hand-made, artisanal version of every product more valuable and appreciated anew, kind of the way we now see riding in a horse-drawn carriage as a special and wonderful experience.
