Thank you for this informative video! I've been a Logic Pro user for decades. Years ago I started buying 3rd party emulations to improve my mixes and have stuck with them. You have showed me that Logic Pro has updated their plugins more than I realized and I need to revisit them.
Your videos are incredible dude. So well presented and articulated. I didn’t even know you could sidechain a HPF in a compressor! That’s genius! Keep up the wonderful work!
Great video Chris. I'm a big fan of getting as much out of stock emulations as possible, and this video is a great resource. I look forward to the rest of the series! Thanks for the hard work in making this.
Great overview! I’ve been in recording since the early 70’s but never really understood what made the different compressors unique. I learned a lot from this video. I haven’t seen any other discussion of vintage compressors that really got under the hood like you did. Thank you!
This was a very useful episode. I tried these compressors on my mixes starting with your settings with surprising results. Thanks for making the content. Appreciated!
DUDE. What a helpful video! Im so excited for more of these. I think that stock Logic Pro may have almost anything one would need for great production and this is helpful on the ins and outs of what is there and capable. Looking forward to more like this!!!
Thanks for this video. Just now dipping my toe in the digital DAW world. Seeing the vintage box these copy sure helps me know which one to reach for in the DAW.
Thanks so much! I am glad you enjoyed it! Episode 2 of this series is up now all about the Vintage EQ Collection. I hope you will check it out as well.
OO very nice. Just discovered this channel, nice to find a fellow Logic user too. Subscribed. I appreciate you explaining what you’re doing and not just saying ‘click on this or that’ as I’m visually impaired, so this helps make it very clear. Seems to me you’re the Dan Worrall for Logic users.
@@sangstersounds I also do Logic tutorials but from a visually impaired perspective. I’d be curious to know whether you, as someone who can see, would find my content useful. I’m not about to send a link here as I don’t want it to seem like I’m advertising, but if you’ve a mind, please feel free to come on over and take a look for yourself. Thanks.
I've got the Waves, Softube, Bx_Consoles and UAD versions of these. I've got some listening to do. Fascinating. Your information is well organised. Well done!
You are welcome! I would say for the Logic compressor gain staging is not as important as for hardware compressors. As long as you are at a reasonable level somewhere between -18 and -6 and definitely not clipping you will get a good result.
This is an amazing idea for a series. Hopefully it picks up some viewers, because this is a great resource. Edit: just wanted to add a vote towards another comment I saw below; can we get Logic’s EQ emulators next or soon?
Thank you for this! Can you please took a look at Logic's Alchemy as well? The filter types and VA waveforms have all sorts of abbreviations that hint at what they're emulating, but they're difficult to figure out. For example- Mg (probably Moog Minimoog), JP4 (probably Jupiter 4), CS (probably CS80), ARP (2600? Odyssey? Solina Strings?), but the ones that evade me are DC, BL, Eml, sq16...And what are Vintage 1/2 based on? There are even more in the filters that seem to suggest origins, rather than just BP/LP/HP which is self-explanatory. This would be a great addition to the series, because I think these are still largely a mystery! I know Alchemy was created by Camel Audio, and according to an old SOS article from 2009, Camel licensed their waveforms from a company called Galbanum. Perhaps there are some clues there
Cool video, I think it would be useful to compare these models to other popular emulations (Waves, UAD etc) or even hardware in therms of how close they are and what sets them apart sonically
Super good video. This is the best one I've seen for the Logic Compressor. Now if Apple would put the input and out meters on the same side it would be perfect.
ah nice! great historic deets and music samples. i been using those them stock plug ins for a couple yrs now; they are mostly fine or really i think plenty enough usually. only thing missed was hearing one at 50 ish percent / parallel. maybe one on the stock reverbs would be cool... to compare too w other fancy ones.
Nice vid! One thing though I've never really see the 'Opto' as an LA2A emulation. Reason being that it still lets you choose the attack, release, and threshold values. Also its doesn't do the two stage release thing (50% of the GR releases quickly release followed by a slower release) the LA2A does. Lastly the detecter circuit has an eq (although on the unit it is adjustable) where it boost the high end, you can also do this in the plug side chain but its not 'baked in'. So if its an 'opto compressor with valve makeup gain, and full set of controls', I'd say its closer to a Tube Tech CL-1B But hey thats just me being picky lol, if it sounds good, it is good! Again, nice video!
Thank you so much for this perspective! I never considered that it might be a CL-1B and not an LA2A but it makes so much sense. Everyone online says it is LA2A just with different controls, but you may have changed my mind! I think because the GUI is white I just immediately agreed that its LA2A just with different controls haha. I am also not nearly as familiar with CL-1Bs as I am with LA2As but your points are so valid!
As I understand it, the distortion settings only work as you approach the specified output setting (0dbfs as default). Does this setting also apply to any signal that is being manipulated by the compressor? Thank you for your explanation and sharing some audio history with us as well!
If you turn the compressor plugin on, the signal is processed, manipulated by the the plugin. Even if the compression settings are ‚off’. This goes also for the distortion setting which gets more audible the more compression is applied.
From my testing the soft and hard distortion settings apply saturation to any signal coming through the plugin (even with no compression happening). The clip setting needs to some type of gain boost either input gain or makeup gain to effect the signal. All three apply more of their effect as the gain is raised. Hope that helps!
Thanks again Chris! If I knew I already had an 1176 and LA2A in Logic I wouldn’t have bought them through third parties! 😂 Any other emulations we should be aware of? Strong 💪 beard by the way!
That was great! I also have a few RRS compressors. There is one called the CL1 that is called a Russian compressor. It sounds great, but I have no idea what it is modeled after.
iirc Platinum Digital goes back to the Compressor that was a premium feature in eMagic's Logic Audio Gold and Platinum product tiers. I have no idea if the algorithm is the same or similar.
The kush audio video "how to hear compression" is the best out there imo. It's about ear training. I can hear this compression on my phone at low level.
Well, to find out, while on the UAD beta team, I build the hardware. That's how ya know, but I will say, I've spent countless months comparing them and turn of the century, basically none of algorithms sound anything like today. Today, you can actually hear it compress, two decades ago, not really.
No insult intended. However, you should use a real drummer on a drum track. That electronic drum beat. You play is totally annoying. But, I think you’re going in the right direction here. Keep it up and find a real drummer for your drum tracks.✌️❤
I’m truly sorry I did not mean to insult you. I too am a musician and in recording. I did find your presentation on compression very interesting and insightful. I’m aware you use an electronic drum track for your demonstration, however a real drum track especially the kick drum would have been much more effective. That’s all and again I apologize. After all, I think your new channel is going in the right direction and that is why I subscribe to your channel. I will refrain from making any more comments in the future. Good luck with your channel and I will watch for your next video because you do have some interesting points that interest me. then again, if you wish to block me, I would understand. Again, wish you well with your new channel. Your video and editing work was outstanding. Have a happy new year and peace and love.✌️❤️

That's the thing with logic no need to break the bank for mixing plugins
So true! Logic has excellent plugins and a lot of them😊 Alchemy alone is worth 200 bucks.
100% agree. It is one of the main reasons I use Logic!
