By the way ! Super tuto ! Pas mal la pub pour le tout dernier plugin gratos ! Dans la mesure où l'on dirait que ta capsule justifie cela !!! Ceci dit, tu fais un super boulot ! Congratulations !!! Thanx for all !!! :):):)
My goto compression workflow explained here in a straight forward way. The 1176 and LA2 also work very well together on a drumbus. Thanks Chris! As usual a very goof tutorial. Cheers from Antwerp.
Hi Chris, thank you for this vidéo. Just a stupid question about 1176, usually fast attack/release is on the right of the knob, isn't it ? Try, this you will see , the comp is more effective, fighting more with transients. Great job, thank you for all the tutorials you provide us. ❤
Great vid. You can also use smart comp... It does the transient peak management and lifting the body.. Much like waves m2 with added advantage of incredible spectral control. I'm trying to ditch the endless train of plugs...pretty much sc2 is THE fixer. Then add salt to taste ie vintage
Very good video, Chris, thank you. That seems to be the same “dual vocal compression” technique for dynamic vocals. I wonder what would be your first approach for a bass with poor punch, using compression. I guess an envelope shaper could help too.
You mentioned that you might approach the compression differently if it was an upright bass in a jazz context. Just curious how you might apply compression on upright in an acoustic jazz trio, no drums? I have my go-to’s but I’m curious if you have something new I could explore a bit. Thanks
That's an old drum recording I made myself for this song. The snare sound is a blend of the snare recording with 2 extra snare samples to support the snare recording. Glad you like it, thanks :-)
Hi Chris love the video, great tips!!!! Question…. I know you did a review on the MM 500 and you’ve been using them for a while now, do you use any EQ correction on them to compensate for the light low end and if so how much?
Yes, I did, the MM-500 are my go-to mixing headphones, and I don't use any EQ correction on them, I like them the way they sound. I do like the low end though, not too loud, but clear enough for me to know what's happening down there. So for me it's the right balance.
very good video. I only wish there was less talking during the settings changes so we can hear the differences. for example, when changing attack from fast to slow and then back from slow to fas,t you talk the entire time, so we can't hear what is actually happening with the transients
Hey Chris.. Good job! I'm compressing the bass guitar into the recording and don't find a need for compressing after that. I've seen the dual compressor either from your vids or others... Keep up the good work 👍
Please don't get me wrong, but I did not hear out any difference, when you bypassed any of the compressors. Anyway, the theory behind comprssion was nicely described, so that even me got it. I hope! Thank you!
I thought it was just me, but I agree I did not hear much difference. Whenever I have used the 1176 the effects are obvious and I have to dial it to taste but once I engage bypass the results are more pronounced. Not sure what happened here especially since he ran a series to the LA2A which is a completely different flavor and tone.
You using a "FET" type compressor - except you're not - the key sound of an 1176 is the distortion you get with the compression - it's just the way they work. By using the UAD 1176 Legacy you are just getting totally clean compression with the attack and release slopes of an 1176 - there' no hardware emulation going on - no FET sound - may as well use a stock compressor plugin.
Compression is in itself a non linear process. Much of the distortion you mention comes from the very fast attack times of FET compressors. The attack time can be much faster than the waveform it is compessing. Combine this with a fast enough release and you'll be altering the wave shape, which we hear as distortion. In other words, the compressor adds harmonics due to the fast attack/release behaviour.
I think I might be mad. I've had my hearing tested and it's perfectly good and I understand the theory but I just don't hear any difference in any of these videos.
Try talking a copy of your bass track then use the "glue" preset of Cubase's Bass VST amp and then mix it in subtly - adds all the weight that's missing from this bass track.
This video is about Bass Compression, attack & release etc... I made several Mixing Bass videos where I cover tone, weight etc, but this video is not it :-) Yes, the Cubase Bass VST is definitely a good Bass Plugin, thanks for sharing your input :-)
Truly love your channel. God bless!
Thank you!
Great!! Yes, please do one on acoustic guitar!
Noted, thanks for watching!
A how-to video that really shows you HOW TO compress without losing the character of the bass. Thank-you, Chris!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Thanks for video, analog obsession has been my fav plug ever since I’ve discovered it❤

You’re the king of compression ! 💪🏻
Thanks! Yes, more of these!

You're welcome, and thanks for watching!
love your videos , thank you ,very Helpfull to me
Glad you do, thanks!

Yes it is, I made a full video on the 1176 :) Enjoy: ruclips.net/video/N39epYqDfGw/видео.html

Thanks Jorge! For a poor punch bass sound, I would use a slow Attack, and medium-fast release to begin with
I like the sound of the bass in the second tune.
I suppose there are compression, saturation and eq ahead of the amplifier?
EQ, and Saturation yes! Glad you like this bass sound

Vocal strip by Chiccarelli for bass too ?
Never tried it!

Glad you liked the video, thanks! I understand your critique, thanks for letting me know!
in Case you didn't check on the Waves MV2 for Bass compression, you really missed out... it's a perfect match.
I did, the MV2 is definitely a good one for bass. Thanks for the reminder :-)
Excuse me, is it possible to know the model of that Sony camera that is recording you from the front?
Of course, it's the Sony A7C with a Sony 20mm G Lens 1.8f
@@mixdownonline Chris, thank you!
Good one!
Thanks!
thank you!
Of course!
Sir how to use 2 audio interfaces same time in cubase
Are you using a Mac. If so then go to audio/midi setup and create an aggregate input/output source. Many videos are on The Tube

Love recording with compression! Thanks for watching :-)
One Solution for a Precision Bass RnB or Neosoul: Cut Highs, use a Transient Designer, use Sustain and a Bass Amp Sim.
That's pretty cool! Thanks for sharing!

Is it just me or does the bass already sounds compressed before going through the processing? I hear a pumping effect.
Interresting, not on my side, though
@@mixdownonline Well I guess it's just me then haha. Great video though man.

You're jumping in a terminology rabbit hole that has nothing to do with the point of this video :-)

i dont underestand these compression videos everything sounds exactly the same

You talk too much, go straight to the point without saying much sir
Bass and drums are a poor pastiche of "It's My Life" by Talk Talk.
It's a mixing tutorial, pal. Relax a bit.
Calm it, London Steve!
A tribute.
