- Five years ago we bought a sailboat and left home to go cruising. Now, after buying a trailerable boat, we’re SO EXCITED to be returning home to go cruising!
Kirk flew down to Florida to scoop up a Farrier F9AX trimaran that we’d been eyeing for months. With the sale complete, he’s about to trailer our new 31’ boat 1500 miles back up to our property in Northern Michigan -- where Lauren and Renata will see it for the first time!
Hope you enjoy!

We all love boats..but this way beyound what i expected..never seen such a finely put together story. this is the best !! your daughter brings it all to another level. So, keep on keeping on...its wonderful. I left it too late, like many old boys thinking we can achieve our dreams but the body gets in the way and we literally can not do any more...we sell our dream. Guys...retire early if you can..take the chance! look at this couple...our inspiration
Oh my gosh, Renata has grown up so much. She's adorable, and speaks so well.
The delight at the start, then that insurance horror, then back up north ... all my memories of boat trailing coming back. So glad she's finally there, now comes the work. Rivetting.
We dumped Progressive years ago. We had five cars, two RVs, three ATVs and two dual sport motorcycles. They would not cover our house in the mountains of Colorado even though we were less than a half mile from the fire station, and completely mitigated all the pine trees and brush.
Very exciting. Congratulations and Renata could not possibly be any cuter! Getting so big so fast!
2023 will be an adventure. Thank you for taking all of us along.
Thank you for being here!
Now you folks finally have a great boat and it is parked on your property so you can make a few adjustments to be ready to put it in the water. Renata is such a blessing for you two as she becomes acclimated to boat life. Huge blessings to you...
Ironically, a Farmer’s Insurance ad interrupts my viewing of this video. 😂
I posted an earlier question if anyone had gotten a Progressive ad? No Yeses yet.
😂
I am glad your drive home was not exciting. When I saw that fender rubbing on the tire, I was like oh no, this is a disaster in the making! I am glad it wasn't! Congratulations!
Lovely channel!!!!!! Thanks for such kind of mood!
All right then. Now I'm looking at more trouble. That "Scoop" on the stern. How can I get one like that set up? Hmmm. Add two feet to the current length of my hull? Hmmm. Such a conundrum I'll tell ya. For the last 17 years. ~ That tree that fell on the bow. All that time in the woods. My embarrassing purchase of a Hunter 23 sailboat. Brought me back to the hull of my very fast (Chrysler Built "Buccaneer.") 19 foot lake boat. North Sails and all. Took the top off, just the hull and centerboard trunk ~ scheduled for demolition. Oh no! Making that into a Canoe, add a couple of Ama's and presto ~ my new trimaran. Thanks for sharing about your new boat! Oh yea! ✨👍✨
Paying to store a boat is crazy especially if the storage is in another state… can tell u guys are happy to have yr boat on your property.
First time watcher. Kirk you sound genuine and it's a pleasure to watch / listen to you. Subscribed
Glad to have you!
May I suggest a metal car port style cover for the new boat. It'll keep that Michigan lake snow load from damaging her. I would still tarp her under the shelter. You could use helper springs they are bolt ons.
If you never need help with the work just ask, were over in wisconsin and travel to silver lake to play in the sand a couple times a year.
The baby is so cute and all grown up!! Congratulations.
Oh my kids, you have come so far since I first started watching your posts! This new to you boat will, once again, start new adventures for you and your precious Reatta(sp). Having your home and boat on the same location will allow you to work on her and then walk a few steps back into your house where there is comfort, a shower and a hearty meal. I am so looking forward to this next phase of your life!
we share a common love: large sailboats on trailers! i saw from some of the images we also share a common problem... the bow is badly scuffed from the trailer bump stop. you can buy a rubber skid cover/plate to cover the bow and extend it down to cover the bottom part that grounds first when you bring it in to a beach. in boat terms its not too expensive.
There's a possibility the original owners dates are off. I got my F-9A plans set #45 in 9/1991. Maybe he bought them earlier and didn't start the build until 1992. Anyway, my build started in 11/1991 and I launched 11/1993. BTW, I built it with my Dad (and brother - both of which have passed now) and we had many great sailing experiences on it.
You should have a lot of fun with your F-boat. They are a tremendous design. Great for day sailing, races and sail camping. They are pretty small for anything more than a couple weeks though and you can't put much weight on them for any decent cruising systems or supplies. They also get pretty wet when sailing at 15+ knots, especially if you are dealing with any ocean or wind chop. But I guess most boats would be pretty wet at 15+ knots.
There were many successful multihull designs before the F boats but Farrier's designs opened the door to a whole new breed of multihull enthusiasts and fast sailors. We could sail with the 50-70' monohull sleds on a real budget. You no longer needed a multi-million dollar boat and crew of 15 to do 20 kts. Suddenly you could do it on a $60K boat with a couple friends and keep it beside your house.
RIP Ian Farrier.
Lake St. Clair Michigander here. Been watching you guys from the start! This is by far the most relaxing sailing RUclips channel (if that’s a thing). Love your content!
Awesome! Thank you!
Taking the Boat home with Dad.......Priceless! And I was proud the day you put your boat in the Charlevoix Marina!!!! From a Medic that loves family, and worked (Volunteered) at Beaver Island EMS! Thank you for taking us along! The Journey has begun!!!!
Hey hey fellow local! Thanks so much for watching 🤗
Really happy you folks get to work on your boat at you own house. So much more convenient and less expensive.
Such a vastly different and more enjoyable experience then being in the yard.
I have a trailer sailer and securing the lines along the mast always a chore. I found that all the lines by the bow (head sail sheets, main sheets, furler line) can be placed in a medium camping stuff sack. I then close the stuff sack and strap it to the mast, this is so much easier than securing each line individually.
You may already know this but possibly putting on C5 leaf springs they are rated at 5000lbs per axle speaking from experience, I know they’re not always readily available. most places always carry 3500lbs axle leaf springs etc. I ended up having to get one set from one shop and another set from another shop. Of course I wanted them within a couple days. Oh by the way, I watched every episode since the beginning, you guys started your journey just before me! Glad and excited to hear about the projects. I need the motivation on my little project boat myself ha ha. Welcome to the traileurable👀 boat world!!🤠👍🌅🛻 ⛵️💨
🛻🛥️💨
Thought you guys where MAD buying a towable with being 3 now but this is a great roomy treasure that you got lucky with knowing the builder extra bonus HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!!!
I built a very strong mooring using three of those 'earth anchors' laid out in a triangle, with chain leads running to the center of that triangle, connecting to a large ring. From that ring, a mooring pennant goes up to the bouy. There you have it! At any point of loading, your boat is pulling on at least two earth anchors! CONGRATZ on this project!
Do you have a suggestion how to set them?
@@artsmith103 Mine was for trimaran that drew only 3.5' so I chose a nice spot on the flats that was safe from most boats dragging up there. I needed a friend and the use of a big bar about 10 or 12 feet long. We just passed that bar through the eye of the earth anchor and 'walked' it in. That took a few beers each anchor! Moral of the story, set this up in as shallow waters as your boat can deal with.
Great episode! Can’t wait to follow the adventure!
How awesome !!! Congrats guys 👏👏👏👏
So excited for you guys!!
My 1st daughter hated getting dirty, my 2nd daughter loved getting dirty lol...Thanks for another great episode!
Happy for you guys! 2023 will definitely be interesting! Can’t wait to see it all!
Congratulations!!!
Looking forward to seeing the new boat in the water! Have a great New Year!
Both of you are such troopers. Hats off to you!!
Congrats! Beautiful boat
Totally excited for your new adventures!
So cool. Looking forward to following along.
So glad to see the new boat. You always bring a smile to my face and make me miss the nice Michigan summers….
Loved that you got to do the drive north with your Dad. 💕
What a lovely boat, quite spacious inside. Really happy for you. I hope all of you had a great Christmas and wishing you all a very good New Year. :)
Heck yeah! Excited for y’all.
Excited to see you back out on the water!
Congratulations on your new boat ..happy new year with many great adventures ..stay safe 🙂
You are see up for the great loop! Perfect boat to do that in. Enjoy and stay safe!
Congratulations, a dream come true, many blessings 🙌🎄
Boat is awesome and your little girl is absolutely adorable! :)
Right on guys! I'm totally jealous 🤣
JUST AWESOME!
Happy to see your excitement on having the new boat in your yard. I would also enjoy seeing what you are doing to fix up your new home in Michigan if you want to show us that.
Best wishes and looking forward to the upgrades and sailing footage.🎉
Kirk is a champion!
Welcome to trailer sailing we love it the freedom to go anywhere fast
Thanks again for another awesome episode! Love the story line, the boat, your family, and all the basic adventures of adulting with a, PB/MB/OB , UP state of mind
I was looking at buying that boat… Congrats on the purchase. Glad it found a good home.
Best thing EVER was having our boat all of 5min away to work on. I was so happy when I forgot a tool at home, and rather than driving an hour, drove 10 min total 😊
Can't wait until you get it in the water for a sail!
I’m super excited you going to be back on the Great Lakes too! It’s what first drew me to your channel in the beginning. Can’t wait to see what you do to the new boat. Happy new year!
You now have your own "boatyard" to play in.
Yes and soon hopefully a "boat shed" and workshop too!
I love your lifestyle! congratulations for the new boat, can´t wait to see you sailing! I follow you from Argentina!
I’m looking forward to seeing videos of your sailing adventures around our Great Lakes!
Infectious couple....stay safe and enjoy life...
My, how your child has grown! Good luck and great adventures.
Your boat acquisition process reminds me so much of my own. Last winter I decided I needed to upgrade from my 28' cruiser to accommodate my family of 5. I found a great boat that hadn't been used in about 10 years over in the Manistee area. It was way too big for me to tow it myself and the cost to have it hauled was a no-go. So I made 4 trips from WI to MI to get the boat ready to cruise it across the big lake back to WI with one of my sons. It was a fantastic experience with some great memories. Like watching the numbers on my depth sounder reach 850' before going unknown and the total sale counter on the marina fuel pump roll over (ouch). I hope you make some great family memories with your new boat and maybe we'll cross paths on the Lakes some day.
Been watching you guys for awhile and just caught up! You've been a big inspiration of mine to get into sailing and this year I've upgraded to a small cruising boat on lake Michigan! So excited for the summer boat memories!
Some tips:
--- These things sail at anchor in wide arcs, even with a harness. When I used a Fortress style anchor, I ripped it out of the bottom every time. Finally got a 22lb Delta and that did the trick (with 30' chain and 1/2" anchor line). Shame to have to carry all that weight though.
--- I linked the motor to the tiller so it turns with the rudder. This complicates raising and lowering especially with remote controls, but the control is phenomenal. I can motor in a 360 turn in about 1.5 boat lengths. Some older design trimarans with fixed outboards were notoriously hard to maneuver and having a turning motor on a tri helps immensely when in close quarters.
Another great episode 👏 boat looks great. I can't wait till you launch her, hurry, and get another episode up. Lol
I’m excited for you, the first sail is going to be thrilling if you get any wind at all
You guys are such an inspiration. Thank you.
Happy you're enjoying the journey ☺️
thanks for update..
Look forward to Lake Michigan sailing ⛵️. Come over to Sheboygan Marina. It’s nice sail !
Question, what makes your lakes so nice? 😂 You guys are going to have a blast sailing around on that boat. Progressive sucks!
Well done guys, fantastic stuff! 🤗🤗🤗
🙌
Contragz guys. Have fun.
La niñna es guapisima,me gusta vuestro trimarán,FELIZ AÑO 2023,saludos desde ESPAÑA
Looking forward to following along with the repairs and modifications to the boat. You three really do make great videos and so enjoyable to watch. ⛵👍
Thank you! Happy to have you along for the ride 🤙
Sweet! You will love sailing on her. We have had 24-27-25-31 and now a 33 on the Chesapeake. As you’ve found, they are not like the other kids. Sail a treat. Get on the f-boats IO list. Look forward to hearing about your adventures!
I can see in the video you are super excited about this..But just letting you know i also am super excited for you guys :)
Merry Christmas you two
I am looking forward to your travels in the Great Lakes. Nice to see you all doing well and Merry Christmas all.
Same to you!
That’s a beauty
We had the same problem with Progressive when we purchased a Tartan. I totally feel your pain!
Good to know, I will never buy Progressive insurance for my boat
Congratulations on the boat. Seeing the two photos of all the wood strips.... I know something about this. I made two wood strip kayaks. Mine were epoxy, these might be resin. I'd recommend regular, as in constant, continual inspection for pinholes, voids, cracks. (These took out huge areas of glass on my kayaks.) As you probably already know any water getting to that wood core will cause it to swell delaminating the skin. (The bond will be good, what separates are wood fibers from other wood fibers. So you get a piece of epoxied fiberglass with a wafer thin layer of wood.)
Get used to grinding out and patching the fiberglass. (After making the two kayaks I thought I knew about fiberglass, but it wasn't until I did some patching that I really stepped up. I soon learned to make the concentric patches, lay them on plastic and coat them all at the same time, coat the boat area, lay it on. Squeegee it. Less than an hour. I'd knock down the edges with sandpaper and fair out the patch. You get really good really fast, but the first time seems a bit tentative. I got a factory made glass/kevlar kayak that had been folded in half! (hauled onto a dock full of water) huge holes. After the first hole it was easy. Some a foot across, no backing. And of course you don't have to match the existing materials. I found kevlar too difficult to work with, probably not epoxy, I used 8 layers of glass and epoxy. Worked great - this was about 4 years ago. Still good. Hope this helps. Looks like a terrific boat. Should be a blast to sail. Of course use a preventer, save your gooseneck avoid a concussion.
Drama! Intrigue! Excitement! Check, check check! Looking forward to the journey ahead. Wishing you success in 2023!
Hahah glad you enjoyed it! All the best to you, too!
I'm stoked for your adventure of projects and sailing before the snow flies.. I wanna see how if sails too. Your daughter is precious.. My daughter is a lot older than yours so thanks for the memories I'm reliving...🌞☺
Thanks Bill!
aww, shes so sweet :)
Really looking forward to seeing you two launch the trimaran. I miss the age when my daughters were the age of yours, right when they start talking and putting things together. Kind of makes me a little sad that mine are all grown now.
Heh, the first highway driving scene, you were driving right through my area.
Oh my goodness - what a fantastic present for the holidays! (Of course it was summer for you guys - the strange time warp of RUclips!) I’m so glad your new boat quest is finally over - and can’t wait to see all the improvements you will make.
Too bad about the insurance! Why on Earth did they cancel it?!?!
I’m in the same boat, well, sorta - a 1990 Corsair F27. Hope to see you out on the Great Lakes!
Appropriate pause point: @0.48 = Kirk & Dad at Exit 58, Needmore Road, (A boat this big does!) on I-75, Dayton Ohio. And Sweet Express Trucking (There's clearly something expressly sweet in bring the Tri home!) is passing you. [ Yes, I'm weird. I like to check out the highway ride portion, hence I paused to see where/what you filmed driving. I find it fitting.]
Thank you.
That's similar to what Tula did minus the baby. Towing a boat around the country. Cool adventures ahead.
Congrats! We are across the bay from you in Northport. I can totally relate to the stress of buying an trailering a new purchase, I swear it’s one of the most stressful parts trying to get it all figured out and hoping nothing catastrophic happens on the highway. Looking forward to your Great Lakes cruising.
Oh and ironically a friend here in town has a Corsair F24 for sale but sounds like you were hunting for something a bit bigger.
Wow, this going to be soooo exciting to watch. Looking back at all of the other projects you completed, over the years, in the boat yard(s), this will be quite different. For one thing, this vessel is so much smaller. The scale of the projects should be much more manageable. Another thing to remember, going into this, both of you have way more skills than you had when you first dug into Soulianis. Not having to learn new skills will make completing your projects go much easier and quicker.
I am anxious to see how she feels on the water. Will the ride inside be much louder, harsher. I'm thinking there had to be more space between the water and your feet in the cabin of the old boat than this boat. On your previous boat, there was so more sound damping "stuff" throughout the entire boat: clothes, pillows, cushions, drapes, groceries, etc., etc. You know what I mean, just stuff everywhere. Of course, as she becomes your new home away from home, much of the old stuff will be brought back on board and the sounds of the boat and sea will be hushed all over again. You will become accustomed to her quirky rattles and squeaks just like you did on Soulianis l.
I think the biggest surprise you are in for is her speed. S1 was like a nice, late model SUV. Responsive, comfortable, classy all the time, the kind of ride folks respected. S2 will be more like a Porche 718 Boxer, BMW M3 Sports Coupe, or Audi TT Quatro. She will want run like a Cheetah. Getting from one port to the next will be more like beaming down to the planet, you will get there before you know it. She will be very nimble in water. I would also think she will be much more of a stable ride in rougher seas.
Lots of cool things to look forward too. Come on!!! Let's gets started!!! This is going to be so cool!!!
I can’t love this comment enough :D
Awesome! I would have thought your auto insurance would have covered anything you are towing. Glad you made it back safely.
The adventure is about to begin. New to you boat. You will be sailing close to home and family. Can it get any better!!!
We're stoked!
I have not seen a better sailboat purchase. Perfect. Congratulations. Sail her 5 times or so before beginning modifications on the stern cabin.
Thank you! Five and some overnights ;)
...... the season is coming to an end on the lakes you say so this has me wondering if you are doing projects in your yard, maybe got a shop big enough to house the boat during projects. Or are you maybe enjoying the Sea of Cortez .... exciting having a new boat .. quite the change space wise from your Tarten ... glad your trip was uneventful .... love hearing Renata's progress with speaking .... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....
Hope to see you sail in to Duluth. I am out fishing on superior just about every weekend in the summer.
Good luck......
So happy for you to choose a Trimaran. You could take us into that "Loop" experience - just the Northern part into Canada perhaps. You are wise investors comes from a Gift from God.
Well 97,000 boating people now know about Progressive. Big whoops on their part.
Thanks so much! Happy holidays to you!
Grandpa loving to share with the new crew! How often!
