    Yo , what a ride guy's , looks serious fun . Roll with it Adam , that boats built for it mate . Always wear a harness outside . In those conditions , the risk of a knock down is pretty high , you may also like to prepare some meals before a blow . It saves trying to cook when the boat is bouncing around .
    The problem with the nav light is quite common . I've replaced a lot of lights on vehicles , for exactly the same reason . You can't repair them , well only on very rare occasions , so you are forced to shell out on a new one .

    • @mickey1299
      @mickey1299 Год назад

      @@TheSailingBrothers Yeah , somehow i don't doubt it . That boat of yours is built like a battleship . The hull at the turn of the bilge will probably be something like three quarters of an inch thick , even the tumblehome is around half inch . Early fibreglass boats were often overbuilt , because the builders were unsure what they were working with , and the keel was more often part of the moulding , so won't fall off . Unlike their modern lightly built counterpart .
      If ya carry a flask , ya can have that all important cuppa tea , (jeeze , only the Brit's , huh) , but there are flasks that will keep things like a stew warm . I've got one , and it's seriously handy . Like my work flask it's stainless , so unbreakable , and good for about 8 hours . Even has a fold up spoon in the lid .

      Yes he's older boats are exceedingly strong. You're not the first person to say they were over-engineered so to speak with fiberglass. I cannot believe I did something B4 you guys. Back in December we chartered a yacht (with a skipper, coward I know) & sailed from Cartagena to San Blas then on to Panama.
    Leaving Cartagena around midnight, we had a gentle chug east for 5 hours B4 hitting current, 20+ easterlies & climbing seas. We maxed out at consistent 4-5m waves for a whole 30 hours. It was remorseless & exhausting despite short watches.
    The pay off was the SB islands. I remain blown by the today, some 4 months or so later.
    After SB the sea moderated but the wind remained in that 20-30kts ark which had you constantly looking over your shoulder.

    Hi Adam Hi Luke, that must’ve been so hard working on that bow light, but we’ll done Luke. But when under sail, you should only be using the the masthead tricolour, the bow & stern lights are for motoring (under power). Also, when sailing at night, always have a powerful torch 🔦 to play on the mainsail when close to other shipping, so effective.

    Great to Hear from you Guys in Panama Yeh Very very Well Done. Atlas is doing great with Her Deep Long Keel; That Swell was Heavy with a short frequency I personally would Reef right down to storm jib. Sailing on a beam reach's are the swells that Roll & turn other yachts turtle. Those were heavy waves but starter swells compered to Ocean Lows significant wave heights. If you spot whilst watching the Swell, Notice The Waves Come in 8ths, Every 8th wave is the Biggest they come in 2 sets of 4 ie 8th being the biggest wave then the next slightly smaller, 8-4 and so on until the next set of 4 start to increase until rounding back to 8th wave. The Biggest of all the Wave Sets as you know depend on Moon phase tide time + weather. You Both are Excellent Sailors & Atlas will Ride head to Wind with a Sea Anchor the Biggest swells. Atlas did a fantastic job at looking after her crew as always, she is such an exceptional little yacht. We were nervous of one of those waves knocking her flat 😲
      We noticed the waves coming in sets but didn't realize it was 2 sets of 4. It's fascinating to sit there and watch the waves coming like kind of hypnotic. If we were in a storm I would be happy to be aboard Atlas ⛵

    In November 2010 I sailed into tropical storm Tomas fifty miles east of the canal. In thirty years of sailing I'd never encountered a storm like that. One meter of rain fell. In Columbia over two hundred people died when the hills caved in. Twelve people were killed in Portabello when a hill caved in. It filled the old Spanish Fort with mud. The wind was so strong we had to crawl around on the deck. We couldn't stand up. And we couldn't face into the rain. I think the seas were running about thirty feet, more or less. We were stuck in the storm for four long days. Couldn't raise any sail. I ran the boat off under bare poles on one occasion and we were doing eight knots.

      What incredible story! That is absolutely crazy. All those poor people that perished such a tragedy. It must have been quite the horrifying experience being on board in that. While sailing from the Bay of Honda on the north coast of Columbia SA around to Santa Marta, Columbia SA we were hit with Christmas winds so strong that the seas were horribly confused. Our auto pilot could not handle the conditions. We had to hand steer for 12 hours. You could only stand for about 1 hour at a time until your arms were exhausted. It was nearly impossible to keep our course. Once we finally reached port I did not want to think about sailing under those conditions again. That was the worst I had ever seen.
    Our weather router had given us calm seas and gentle winds in our forecast. No way to know what we had to face till we were stuck in it.

    I'm beginning to think I was very unlucky in my year in the Norwegian Navy. The best passage Bergen-Skagen looked like that, and the others were like being in a frothy washing machine, never less than 45 knot winds. The worst one was Edinburgh-Bergen with a 60 knot Northerly against the current. I was stood 45 feet up on the bridge and looking UP at the rogue waves. I can't imagine sailing in that, but sailing is what I want to begin with so I suppose I can't outrun it and it's bound to happen? But where are the videos of people who did?
