According to Hagrid, there ain’t no place better, and if I’m honest, that’s more than likely the same view for anyone looking to acquire a wand. Ollivanders is almost part of the furniture it’s been around so long, existing for more than 2000 years. There’s nothing I love more than making a video on an extremely interesting topic and for me, Ollivanders would be very close to the top when it comes to interesting discussion topics from the wizarding world. In today’s video. I’m going to take you through the entire history of Ollivanders, how they’ve operated throughout the years, their wand making techniques and we’ll even talk about a few of the Ollivanders of past generations including the current one still there today, Garrick. So with that being said, welcome back to the world of Harry Potter, please enjoy today’s video on the complete history of Ollivanders.

Interesting that the golden trio each had a different core in their wand. Hermione was dragon heartstring, Ron was unicorn hair, and Harry was, of course, phoenix feather. If I'm remembering correctly. If you think about it, their cores really suit them.

Okay, I’ll be the boring, pedantic one... The Romans had indirect contact with Britain going back to at least the 4th century BC. Britain was a source of tin, which was necessary for making bronze, and had been traded with by the Phoenicians and Greeks going back to Classical times. It’s known that the rest of Europe was trading with Britain far back into the Bronze Age.
Anyway, we know that Hellenistic and early Roman influences were already being felt centuries before Julius Caesar’s invasion in the 1st Century BC. Celtic native Britons were also shown to be using Roman coins and native copies of Roman coins long before the invasion.
So, it’s not a huge stretch for an entrepreneurial magical person, who would have known about Britain through stories and sailors’ tales, to up stakes and decide to be the first Roman trader in magical artifacts from the Mediterranean world at that time.

    • @PhilBagels
      @PhilBagels 4 года назад +4

True. But it would be a stretch for him to actually have the name "Ollivander". Most people didn't have last names at the time, and certainly not ones based in languages that didn't exist yet. He would have had a name based in ancient Latin or Greek. Which may possibly have been later Anglicized into "Ollivander", or the name Ollivander may have been added as a family name centuries later.

Moreover it stated by rolling that first wands ( and wands in general) was without core and only focused magic of it user and used to establish a new sort of casting spell by using set of movements to genrliezed casting.
In it base magic is wandless and wordless , but if you want to replicate a feat of someone else you need to understand him, and what he did . So chant and movements are like two languages that make communication easier like regular communication.
30% of human communication is lost when speaking on phone because the body language is missing.

Now we need a video on the life of Gellert Grindelwald followed by Newt Scamander, since those two started the Fantastic Beasts series.
After this, there needs to be videos on Nicholas Flamel and the Goldstein sisters.
I’m not sure whether a video on Jacob Kowalski is needed as he was a muggle.
In regards to the creatures, the bowtruckle should be next followed by the thunderbird and occamy.

A video on Jacob kowalski would be very Interesting he was a ww1 veteran I think. So it could be Interesting if they talk about his past and maybe how he reacted to ww2 in later movies. Or maybe he saw some wizards fighting during the war. There was a story that ww1 soldiers saw Angel's that helped them fight in the war maybe kowalski could be one of the soldiers who saw that and instead of Angel's they were actually wizards but muggles just said Angel's cause they weren't sure what they were seeing

Another important consideration about the Ollivander family (and indeed ALL families, both wizard and muggle): if you trace them all the way back to 382 BC, their name cannot possibly have been "Ollivander" for all that time. Languages evolve over time, and so do names. The name "Ollivander" would be based on languages much more recent than ancient Rome. That original "Ollivander" of 382 BC would probably have had a name like "Eliaravdi" or "Olivalignus" or something like that, from ancient Greek or Latin. And the vast majority of people of that time would not have had both a first and last name - just one name. Family names were a much more recent development. On rare occasions, a king or emperor might have two names, but almost no one else did. Think of all the ancient philosophers and kings and Biblical characters and others of that era with only one name.
Or that original "Ollivander" may have had a name totally unrelated to the modern name of Ollivander, and the last name was likely only added as the family name a few centuries ago. Many families had no last names as recently as 200-300 years ago.

So lucky they got John Hurt to play this part. He nailed it...just as he’s nailed every part he’s ever taken. On might have some issues with the movie adaptations as compared to the books, but Truly, all of the adult actors cast in the Potter movies were spot on....well, EXCEPT for Micheal Gambon.

this is good so far. I wonder, if the dragon heartstring wand's strong bond with its owner could be reminiscent of the Dragon Riders in either the Inheritance Cycle or Dragonriders of Pern series. this seems plausible, at least for me, as the beasts also bond to people, so the wand presented in the video with dragon heartstrings, could also do so.

Dean plz do a video on Easter Eggs in the Books and movies
Here is one from the books which more than 95% of people reading my comment won’t know
When Snape was filling in for Lupin as the defence against Dark Arts teacher for a day he said “Turn to page 397” On page 397 of the 3rd book (In which he was filling for Lupin) we find that Peter Pettigrew had already been passing information to Voldemort one year before Lily and James were killed. This is one of the biggest shocks in the book
Now that I look back I can’t believe how big of a genius is Rowling

I will amend your statement about Rowlings dates to this: she meant to say 382 AD, not BC. That was the year Magnus Maximus were fighting the Scots, though the dates ive seen are 380, 381, 382, AND 383 AD for the conflicts. It puts us 786 years later, but the history for Olivander makes much more sense if we do. 😊

It's a pity J.K. decided to say Ollivander's lineage went back to Roman settlers. Her original date would have meant Ollivander's lineage was Celtic, possibly even Druidic. The Druid reverence for trees would have brought an interesting flow into the study of wand woods.

In The Chamber of Secrets,a Cornish Pixie steals Lockhart's wand and breaks the roof candelabra's chain and in FB and where to find them, the monkey that steals Newt's wand operates it. I know they can't produce real spells, but aren't they supposed to work only for humans?
