I have always had a theory that Tom Riddle did indeed know it was the Resurrection Stone. And he used it to talk to his ancestors Salazar Slitherin; and that’s how he discovered the chamber of secrets. But I do agree that he lost interest in its powers after that because everyone who is dead in his life was worthless to him.

    • @sunrays9953

If he knew about resurrection stone... Then he would have known about deathly hallows... He would have gone after deathly hallows and become master of death(had one of three) .... Instead of creating horcruxes.... I think he didn't know....

The resurrection stone brings loved ones from the dead, not relatives. You have to love the person who you are resurrecting. Tom Riddle never knew love. The stone would not, and did not, work for him. He is incapable of understanding how it works. I assume he was never aware of its uses but sensed its magical properties.

    • @dylanruby6687

@@grantlogan9207 I don't think that's the case. Because when Dumbledore was talking to Harry about it he dismisses it by saying who would he "Want to bring back" not who "could he bring back". I'm convinced that he would "want" to bring back his prized ancestor, but because the stone lures you to death, I bet he became terrified of it after using.

@@dylanruby6687 I see where you draw your conclusion, however I dont believe thats how the stone works. "Want" is subjective in both of our cases, meaning just because you want something, does not mean your heart desires or loves it. I.e money, everyone wants money, but it is not necessarily a desire of your heart. Our only use we see is with Harry, other than the orginal use, but both instances brought back people they loved and knew in their hearts. If it was just who you wanted, i believe we wiuld have seen more individuals appear for Harry, for instance Dumbledore, maybe Cedric, maybe Snape at that point, maybe Dobby if thats even an option. Lol im not saying youre wrong, you could be right, this is just how i see it.

Grindelwald's plan was to collect all three would have been common knowledge at the time. In 1943, Grindelwald was at the height of his power. What better way to knock Grindelwald out of the equation than by hiding the ring in a place of virtually no significance to the magical world? Voldemort left it hidden because it was of no further use to him.

Considering the ring/stone has the logo of the Deathly Hollows carved into it, I highly doubt he didn't know. Even if he wasn't aware at first, he 100% would have searched out what it represents, and learned about them/the power they potentially have, and recognized the stone. Riddle was all about learning anything and everything he can that would increase his power.
I think its more he just didn't care, and thought himself already more powerful than to need to turn to legends. He wanted to create his own. He didn't need the Hallows to become the "master of death", he's already immortal due to the horcruxes. He already mastered death in his mind. He doesn't need the stone to resurrect anyone, because nobody is his equal in his mind, nor does he love anyone other than himself. He doesn't need the invisibility cloak, because after coming back, he has no need or want to hide.
In the end, its kind of poetic how the man that believes himself above legends, was taken down by someone wielding the tools of legends

On the subject of horcruxes, I'm more curious about Tom Riddle's diary: where did he buy it at, his personal use of it and then making it into a horcrux?

    • @tanvirsingh6255
      @tanvirsingh6255 4 года назад +16

The significance of that diary is that it proved a student named Tom Marvolo Riddle was the heir of slytherin. As Riddle himself discloses that he felt he it would not be safe to open the chamber of secrets again while he was still at school under the watch of Albus Dumbledore. Making the diary into a horcux would definitely prove to be useful as the piece of soul concealed inside the diary would be able to act of it's own accord and possess anybody who got emotionally attached to the diary like Ginny Weasley. Harry mentions that the owner must've been Muggle born to have purchased this diary in the muggle parts of london thus we can conclude that riddle may have purchased this during his trips to Diagon Alley while he was still a student. The diary has been and will be for me always the most curious horcrux. This is the best explanation I can offer.

He tried to do research about the symbol on the ring, then he would try to bring his mother back but he only saw the faint image of her. Something probably happened during it that made him just didn't want to wear it anymore so he made it into a horcruxe. I am thinking he was probably disgust of his own mother foolishly ran away with a muggle, his father. His father then abandoned his mother. She died after gave birth to him in the orphanage without using magic to save herself. I think he probably questioned his mother about all these thoughts he had over the years. After knowing the truths, out of disgust he didn't want to wear it again but by putting a piece of soul in it shows Peverell brothers are his ancestors.

I heard once that voldemort did know that it was the resurrection stone and that's why the curse affects whoever wears it.
By defiling the stone with a horcrux, he essentially reversed the effects of the stone so that instead of resurrecting the dead it would cause the user to die. Apparently that's how most of the horcruxes would work. Because of the darkness in voldemort's soul and the dark magic used to create a horcrux, they would reverse the magical properties of the artifact to cause harm instead of invigorate the user.

@@Nikstar112 because the necklace didn't have magical properties relating to life and death. In fact it had no magical properties before it became a horcrux.
The effect of each horcrux is different.
Tom's diary (which previously had no magical properties) made Jinny open up her deepest thoughts feelings to it, giving it control of her mind.
The ring caused a curse that would kill the wearer, instead of resurrecting the dead. That's what happened to Dumbledore, though he was powerful enough to hold off the curse for almost a year, it would've eventually killed him painfully. Which is why he asked Snape to kill him, so that he didn't have to suffer. Snape also gained Voldemort's trust by doing it.
Slytherin's locket (which also had no prior powers) affected the moods of the wearer, making them irritable and quick to anger, which is why Ron left Harry and Hermione after his tantrum.
The diadem of Ravenclaw was said to improve the intelligence of the wearer, the reversed properties caused by the horcrux would've made the wearer insane instead.
The cup of Hufflepuff is said to have magical properties, but those are never mentioned and we never find out because nobody drinks from it.
With the other two horcruxes being Harry and Naigini, which caused a sort of mental link between them due to them being living horcruxes instead of inanimate objects.

I don't think Tom Riddle knew about the Deathly Hallows as it seemed he just learnt about them when he asked Ollivander for the most powerful wand in existence. If young Tom Riddle had known about the Hallows, he would probably have tried to track down the Elder Wand. It would cement his status as the conqueror of Death, now wielding its weapon and ready to use it with murderous intent and would eliminate the threat of anyone using it against him.
And about the ring, Snape strongly implied that destroying the ring was useless and my guess would be that once touched, the progression of the curse inside the victim can't be affected by the destruction of the ring. Dumbledore survived as long as he did, because of his own magical prowess and Snape's extensive knowledge of the Dark Arts. But I do wonder: seeing how Snape stated that Dumbledore should have recognized immediately that the ring was cursed, did Snape recognized it as a Horcrux or at least suspected it to be?

So, what’s saying that Dumbledore couldn’t have done the same thing preventing the curse from killing him in the first place as it clearly shows in the movie that only his hand as actually been affected from the dark magic placed upon the horcruxe.

    • @paradygmshift7826

In theory yes but remember at that point Dumbledore knew that Malfoy had been ordered to kill him. He wanted to spare Draco the act of murder that's why he planned to have Snape do it. He was already a dead man so there was no point in cutting his hand off since he planned on the Elder Wand to die with him.

      @xninjadarkness 4 года назад +16

@@paradygmshift7826 Yes, true that would explain why he didn’t try harder to prevent the curse from killing him. I totally forgot about that fact when writing the comment however the actions then taken from Dumbledore can be seen more of a sacrifice. This makes me think that J.K Rowling could of thought more about his death as the curse sort of gives reason to why Snape should kill him rather than the fact if he really wanted to he could of bypassed the effects like mentioned before by giving himself a new hand therefore making his actions in both the books and movies more heroic than he is actually given credit for. It can also be argued that this would also make his sacrifice greater then Lily's due to the fact she gave her life for her son where's Dumbledore would be doing it for a student.

He knew he would have to sacrifice himself to Snape because Moufoy wouldn't have it in him to kill Dumbledore, he knew that Voldimort would think snape the owner. but he was disarmed by Moufoy...so the Elderwand would belong to Moufoy who Dumbledore knew Harry would revenge against moufoy so when Harry went to die to Voldimort the Elderwand would belong to Harry and the Elder wand will not kill it's master. But instead kill the fragment of soul within him ending the Horocruxification of Harry and leaving only the snake as a horocrux which when the last horrocrux died so would Voldimort. Harry only assisted in the killing in the end... Dumbledore didn't save his hand because he had to make the sacrifice for his plan to work. Another thing to think about... The avadakadabra curse... The curse of death... Could have killed all the horocruxes without destroying the containers... Huh think about it.... :)

I'm pretty sure Voldemort knew the true nature of the ring since he knew enough about the deathly hallows to seek out the elder wand. I don't think he had any interest in using the stone though because he probably wanted to distance himself from anything dealing with the after life because of his obsession with immortality. A deeper reason he probably discarded the ring once he learned what the stone could do is because he would come face to face with the realization that if his Horcruxes did somehow get destroyed his soul would be so beyond repair that even the resurrection stone probably wouldn't be able to summon him, he would be nothing and be locked away and cut off for eternity. I know it's far fetched but at some point he must have considered even for a moment what would happen to him if someone was able to kill him especially after horcruxes started being destroyed.

Voldemort didn't seek out the Elder wand until Olivander told him about it when Voldemort was angry about the failure of first his own wand, znd then Malfoy's to kill Harry. Ollivander was scared, and so told his captor what he'd thought was a fairy tale.
Most wizards considered the Deathly Hollows to be a fairy tale for kids, so Voldemort would have originally thought them a waste of time, until he realized he'd need a wand of power to defeat Harry.

I believe he knew but had no reason to use it.
He had just killed his muggle father and knew his mother was basically a squib.
It was the first step in conquering death by gaining possession of a deathly hollow.
He was terrified of death and dead people. Which played a role in why he chose the dead to protect one of his horcrux's in the lake inside the cave. They terrified him, which he assumed would terrify others.
His fear of death would justify altering the ring because it would also prevent others from using it on the small chance it was found. It's possible he was ignorant of what he possessed but even if he had known, his decision would have been exactly the same. He didn't need the deathly hollows to conquer death when he had figured out how to make a horcrux, but it would prevent his enemies from obtaining them and using it against him.
The only one he truly wanted to use was the elder wand. Going invisible was something he could already accomplish, he was scared of the dead, so the wand is the only thing he'd be interested in. Finding out Dumbledore had it was probably very satisfying, in Tom's eyes, it would explain why Dumbledore always bested him. Which would stroke his egotistic personality.

The ring and the curse is the reason I believe that Riddle becomes the owner of the Elder Wand.
SuperCarlinBrothers created a video where they think that Riddle is the owner essentially because he killed Gregorovitch. In short, their theory claims that the switching of allegiances of the Elder Wand is questionable.
Such as Harry disarming Draco when Draco didn't even have the Elder Wand in his possession and this switches the allegiance from Draco to Harry. Furthermore, they question Draco's ownership of the wand as Albus planned to be defeated. It can be put forward that Albus planned to be defeated by Severus and not Draco. Although, eventhough Draco surprised Albus he did allow himself to be disarmed as it was part of the plan to be killed by Severus.
Ultimately, they ascertain that Albus never held ownership of the Elder Wand as they determine that Gregorovitch was still the owner as Gellert simply stole the wand and so was never the true master either.
So if you believe that ownership does not switch with simply disarming and theft then it looks as if Riddle is the owner in this scenario.
However, if you do accept the book lore of the Elder Wand sensing defeats of owners through theft and disarmament then I believe that Riddle still becomes master.
An exmaple of the Elder Wand sensing the owner's defeat is that Draco disarmed Albus and that eventhough Darco does not hold possession of the Elder Wand he still loses the allegiance of the wand as he is disarmed by Harry whilst using another wand. It is worth noting that the Elder Wand is not even present during this confrontation.
So I argue that if you believe this is how ownership is determined then my assertion is even more likely. This is because the Elder Wand is present the moment Albus places the ring upon his finger.
Riddle cursed the ring. And so the instance Albus is afflicted by the curse. He is defeated. Thus, Riddle becomes the master of the Elder Wand from the wand's point of view, just as theft or disarmament defeats the opponent, placing a fatal curse defeats them also. Especially, a fatal curse that drives the individual to a self sacrificial plan.
This is because once a person has been stolen from or disarmed they can still defeat the opponent. So just because Albus still has time to live does not mean he has been defeated. This is because the Elder Wand switches allegiance when the opponents (Gregorovitch and Draco) still have time to live. So if they lose their ownership of the Elder Wand in those scenarios then Albus should too.
Moreover, Albus creates his sacrificial plan because he has been cursed. Because his life is now on a timer. Because he has already been defeated by Riddle. He is not forced to make the plan but the reason he does is because he is cursed. This means Riddle defeats Albus and Riddle kills him. He sacrifices himself because of Riddle. Now when Albus is cursed he still could win ownership back (technically but not realistically) as he would just have to defeat Riddle before he dies.
So Riddle becomes the Master of the Elder Wand the moment Albus is cursed as he has caused the master of the Elder Wand to be defeated. He begins to plan his own defeat afterwards but is ultimately killed by Riddle as his curse is the reason for his sacrificial plan.

One correction, the whole ring, including the stone, were the horcrux. When Harry gets a good look at it, it is the stone which has been struck by the Sword of Gryffindor (not the ring) and has a deep crack in it. So Cadmus Peverell (or Death if you believe the tale) created an enchanted item that survived severe physical damage and still functioned as intended . It makes you wonder what the Elder Wand, and cloak could have survived and still functioned.

I think Tom did know he had the resurrection stone. He knew of the hallows, and likely the symbol associated with them.
They just (and to quote you) went against everything Voldemort stood for. He didn't want that artifact, nor the cloak. Only the wand.

Hi everyone. I think Tom Riddle knew what the stone was, but he simply didn't care. Because he could not love an even nearly understand love. Besides he thought everyone who died were loosers. So what's the point of bringing them back🤷.

Had Voldemort known that the curse he'd put on the Resurrection Stone to protect his soul inside it was killing Dumbledore he'd have left him to die a slow painful death and not thought up the "force Draco to kill Dumbledore to punish Lucius for getting the diary Horcrux destroyed in Chamber of Secrets and not getting the prophecy in Order of the Phoenix" plan.

I hope things get better for you. I discovered HP again back in 2016, as part of a movie marathon my son and I had in memory of Alan Rickman. I was going thru some stuff as well, and I was completely taken over by the story, and it's underlying message!! I love the series now, and have even read the books twice thru now. Sending positive thoughts your way in hopes you find the "light" ("happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light"). Eat some chocolate, and fight off those dementors....things will get better.

I found a possible plot hole. The unforgivable curses require malicious intent. So how is it Snape successfully killed Dumbledore with one? He quite obviously didn't have malicious intent there. I'm thinking it didn't work so Dumbledore purposefully fell back out of the window and died hitting the ground not from the killing curse.

I believe that the curse is exactly like the curse Ginny had on her. It drains life from the person who interacts with it in a specific way, and slowly rebuilds a version of Tom Riddle. It might actually have been the same with the locket, which is why it was slowly corrupting it’s wearer.

I feel he would've known it was a resurrection stone. We have to remember that he read extensively. But then he had no loved one. Whom would he call? And he hated death. It definitely wasn't useful to him.

I would have loved to see the other curses placed on the Cup and the Diadem! That could have been awesome, for the Cup of course it would turn the liquid poured into a poison or something similar to the Drink of Despair to torture the drinker. For the Diadem I think than rather than bringing knowledge and wisdom it would maybe bring madness and violence to the wearer, to get more knowledge because of the arrogance and sense of superiority it would bring...It was a very interesting video Dean and the interpretation of Marvolo Gaunt was just on point 👌🏻😄

One big counter argument about voldemort having no use for the resurrection stone.... He feared death, if he'd have know what he had he could have just worn the ring and told his closest followers that in the event of his death that they could bring him back with his ring. Which opens up implications of a whole other level, we know how it goes for regular people brought back. Let alone someone like voldemort.

I think Tom Riddle the boy/man whom became Lord Voldemort knew the resurrection stone was in the ring but had no interest in it because their was nobody he wanted to bring back from the dead in fact the only Deathly Hallow Voldemort was interested in was the elder wand.

Dumbledore had secret lessons with Harry, showing him the memories of young Tom Riddle , and the exact number of horcruxes he made. In doing this, Dumbledore became Harry’s defence against the dark arts teacher. Voldemort was the embodiment of the dark arts, and Harry had to defend himself by destroying the Horcruxes. But, the post of defence against the dark arts is cursed as we know, and usually the teacher’s die, or meet their worst nightmare at the end of that year (lockhart wiping his own memory). Dumbledore’s worst nightmare happened at the end of the 6th book for several reasons:
    1) He found all the Deathly Hallows (reminding him of his younger years)
    2) He was given a year to live
    3) He found out Voldemort made at least 6 Horcruxes
    4) Hogwarts was invaded by Death Eaters
    5) Draco disarmed him before Snape could kill him (but it worked out anyway)
    6) He died before being able to help locate the rest of the hallows, and Harry wouldn’t be able to return for a 7th year at Hogwarts
    7) He might have found a way to wait in limbo to meet Harry, but that meant waiting up to a year or year(s) for him.
He died after a year of teaching harry against the darkest of all dark arts, and all his worst fears were realized. Until he met Harry in limbo, and knew everything would be ok, and moved on.

Q: A: No I do not think he had a clue-just a proof of blood line to him early on-and of course a way to keep himself immortal, but later on he may have started to piece it all together but his head was so messed up, not understanding the concepts of love-just power-he could not actually have a true base of loyalty from the death eaters- except from the one who truly loved him (B.L.) not those in fear and he had no love for them- they were just tools to his means to an end

Remember, Hermine and Harry hadn't a Wizarding upbringing while Ron did, he asked them if they ever heard of certain Wizarding fairytales and they didn't. Tom had a muggle upbringing as well, he didn't know about the Deathly Hallows. I don't think he knew what the stone did.

  • @jnmsks6052

I don't think Tom Riddle knew of the Hallows or that the ring was set with the resurrection stone. Being raised in a Muggle orphanage, he wouldn't be familiar with the story, and I don't think he would have bothered to read what would be considered children's stories. I also think that even if he had known, he wouldn't have wanted to use it anyway, never having lost someone he loved, as he'd never loved anyone.

Tom feared death, he wanted to live forever as you said, so having an artifact that can bring back the dead would terrify him beyond imagination. so i think no, he didn't know he had the resurrection stone all this time.
