@@DavidRay_40 i believe Myrtle was Muggle-born, so she definitely was killed intentionally. i think the only "collateral damage" the Basilisk ever did was when it attacked Hermione, it took Penelope Clearwater with her!
@@JuanMataCFC I think he meant when Ginny threw the book through her. Ginny simply wanted to escape the power of the book. She clunched the book in toilet and threw it randomly. So it happens to be right in the direction of Myrtle.
The diary was sentient and it feed on the live energy of magical victims. It was the half soul of young sixteen Voldemort and if he succeded by killing Ginny he would be return to life in that form, young and handsome. No wonder why Voldemort was so harsh on Lucius I think he wasn´t hard enough, I would have kill him instead, but I suppose he still needed him for chores.
But if that version of Voldemort fused with his spirit remnants from the rebounded killing curse, I think it would have altered his appearance closer to his deformed body.
Lucius was the most important Death Eater (other than Snape...kind of) because he was so trusted and had connections within the government. He did all this shit but didn't get caught for it until the second to last book.
@@nahor88 i think i Remember reading that the reason he looked like that in the first place was because he was so corrupted due to all of the deaths he caused which broke his soul in to fragments. So there wasnt much soul left in the original body. If he restored the diary. Thats 50% of his soul right there, then on top of that the last fragment of his soul hiding in albania would likely merge with it. So i assume he would look kinda messed up but not as bad he before.
Ginny: Dear Tom Riddle, There is this really cute boy in a year above me but is the best friend of my brother, his name is Harry Potter. He was at my house a few weeks ago, do you think he likes me? Should I ask him out? Sorry, I’m a bit Baka >.< UwU. Tom riddle: fml
Queen Persephone Ginny: Dear Tom Riddle, Harry Potter looked at me again! Sempai noticed me! I think I got a bit wet. He is to die for! UwU. Tom Riddle: trust me, I’ve been there..
I thought that the diary contained Riddle's instructions and observations about his experiences with black magic during his last year in Hogwarts, especially regarding his making of his first horrocrux. I remember that (at least) in the film, the pages of the diary move to a certain date when Harry Potter asks the diary to show him where was the last time the Chamber was opened. Probably it has a magic spell that would prevent its contents to be visible to random people, unless they ask the diary something by writing on the apparently blank sheets. For me it's like a hybrid between the Marauders Map and the Pensieve, but also having the ability to possess your soul
No. That was the potions text book. And that was Snape's book. He revealed that at they end. "Yes. I'm the half blood prince." They thought it was voldemorts. Ginny used the diary to open the chamber of secrets. Well.voldemort used the diary to communicate with her which led to her opening the chamber of secrets.
@@cre8iveflare that's a completely different thing. The potions book was just a normal book with handwritten notes and corrections by Snape itself, but it was not magical in nature. In the film for HP2, Harry asks the diary if it knows something about the last time in which the Chamber of Secrets was opened. After that, the pages of the diary move to the date in which Riddle blamed Hagrid for that, and then Harry gets absorbed into the memory of the events of that day, as if the diary was a Pensieve
J R I agree, the book is more specific than the movie most didnt read the book. The journal i is basically a pensieve. Pages are filled with memories rather than ink. Once it became a horcrux it basically became a sentient pensieve
@@tonderainigelchadambuka8725 another interesting detail that links Riddle’s journal to a pensive is a subtle clue in Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows part 2: in all the scenes Harry uses the pensive when first ‘entering’ the memory the construct of the memory appears to form through a primordial soup that resembles- you guessed, black ink.
I wouldn't be surprised if Tom Riddle wrote in the diary, but had enchanted it in away where NO ONE could read what he had written. But I 100% agree on the mathematical splitting, so as each time he splits his soul only a smaller percentage of his soul is placed into an object. I do think that the Diary was always plan B if Voldemort died, simply revive using the best horcrux. Unfortunately, the mission to restore Voldemort failed and had drastic results later.
But why would he do it that way if he knew he'd be splitting his soul in seven? Why not have evenly sized chunks, or just a little in case one got destroyed. Being so blasé about the way he handled a whole half of his soul seems to reckless even for Voldemort. The whole division by two thing was just a theory I never bought and isn't really backed up in the text. If Slughorn meant half when explaining what a horcrux was, he would have stated "half", not "a bit". Keep in mind that at this point he had no idea that Voldemort was thinking about this process being carried out more than once, as he was shocked by the very notion of it when it's brought up toward the end of that conversation.
jakerockznoodles he said to split the soul which suggests more that it is in half rather than a bit. Also you don’t have control of the amount of your soul you have split. You simply split it and then use that split piece to make a Horcruxe
I don't think he can control how much soul is split with each murder, let us assume his soul splits in half with each murder, in order to work out what percentage of soul each horcrux possesses, we would need to know the number and order of each murder he has committed to apportion correctly. I will run through an example, let's say the only murders he committed were to create his horcruxes. Then the diary being his first would be 50% of his original soul, the ring would be 25%, the locket is 12.5%. the cup is 6.25%. the diadem is 3.125%. nagini was 1.56% and both Harry and voldy would possess 0.78% of his original soul. But as he committed many murders which were not used for horcruxes, his soul would still be split each time and could greatly change the above portions.
I always wondered if the diary was a gift from the orphanage to Tom as he left for boarding school. I doubt he would have had his name added because he hated being called Tom. As Tom learned more magic, he probably enchanted the diary so he could use it without others reading it. Then it was made a horcrux later. Perhaps after the ring he got from Morphin. That’s why the ring did so much damage to Dumbledore. The diary was probably an enchanted object that became a horcrux. It was probably 1st or 2nd horcrux. So either 1/2 a soul or a 1/4.
We also know through the books Voldemort was only ever interested in taking magical items or items of significance and defiling them for the purposes of a Horcrux. It makes sense he would have kept a diary from the Orphanage as the Orphanage was the first place he had learned that he was "special" and where he had begun to torture the other children. It marked his journey into the wizarding world and in turn, his "calling to power". Other proof of this would be where he would take those children. He kept the locket within the cave of a place he had used once during a field trip to terrify the other orphans. Keeping such a locket in such a place shows that Voldemort was "attached" to the places where he fondly remembers harming others. Likewise, it's also why Voldemort had an attachment to Hogwarts as that was another step on his "journey".
@@LDaemontus wrong on EVERY point...voldemort HATED the orphanage & BEGGED his headmaster 2 allow him 2 stay @ hogwarts 4 the summer holidays as well as the usual school year...matter of fact the ONLY reason he closed the chamber of secrets & framed hagrid was because he found out the governers were about 2 close hogwarts permanently & he COULDNT STAND the idea of being stuck n the orphanage...he chose the cave 2 hide the locket as it was VERY difficult 2 access & the whole point of having a horcrux is 2 hide it n a secure location...voldemort loved hogwarts because it was the ONLY place where he felt @ home & viewed hogwarts as his home
@@mindovermatterbecomingyour1561 I believe you strongly misunderstood my comment. I did not specify it was the Orphanage itself. I specified it was the *harming* of the children the Orphanage that he took great pleasure in. He stole from the other children, made them miserable, even did things to them that they wouldn't speak about to the caretakers. He collected items from the children he hurt as a typical serial killer collects from their victims. Voldemort defiled those other orphans. Dumbledore had to make Tom swear he wouldn't harm other students while at Hogwarts when he discovered the wardrobe of items he had stolen from the other children. This was also the same scene where he tells Dumbledore that he's always known he was "special". In the eyes of a person like Tom Riddle, a diary from the past where he had begun to commit the crimes he took pleasure in is a sacred piece for his collection, a reminder of what he had done. Even better if it meant he defiled others like Ginny Weasley through it; an object that likely nobody could think could harm someone. Voldemort was ruthless. He manipulated, abused, used and murdered his way for his Horcruxes, taking things of historic and tragic value, often belonging to his victims, to defile into vessels for pieces of his soul. It's not the location, it's the act, the deeds, he committed. It's where he had begun his process of cruelty like a sociopath begins their acts on animals in childhood. It's a sick, twisted, crude way to keep the memory alive and it got twisted into a means in which he could continue to harm others. As for the cave... "In his childhood, Tom Riddle was brought to a seaside site near this cave on holiday with his orphanage. He discovered this cave and terrorised two fellow orphans, Amy Benson and Dennis Bishop, there. He most likely magicked their way to the cave scaring the children. The experience was so terrible they refused to divulge exactly what happened. Without magic, entering the cave would require uncommon mountaineering skills, as boats cannot approach the cliffs." - Harry Potter Wiki (confirmed by the Half-Blood Prince Novel & Movie).
Tom Riddle grew up a no-name orphan with no family history. When he came to Hogwarts, he found out he was related to Salazar Slytherin, a famous wizard; I think that was the moment he decided to finish his ancestor's work. He considered the chamber of secrets to be his birthright; it was, in many ways, one of the first things he ever got from his family. However, he couldn't take credit for being Slytherin's heir at the time, so he split his soul and left behind a diary to be passed onto a future Hogwarts student so that the chamber could once again be opened and the now fully-grown (and much more powerful) Voldemort could finally let it be known that he was finishing the work of his ancestor.
Blackcat 21 his mother was from the Gaunt family, a wizarding family of pure bloods that were directly related to Salazar Slytherin. His mother of- course broke that cycle when she put Tom Riddle senior(Tom Riddle senior was a muggle) under a love potion. There are a few clues here and there that prove of this ancestry such as the fact Tom Riddle junior was a parcel tongue(the ability the talk to snakes). This was a very rare ability that Salazar Slytherin himself possessed.
While I understand the half of a half of a half with the creation of each Horcrux I've always had this nagging suspicion that it isn't as easy to quantify. I wonder if each Horcrux was more special than simple division. For example, the diary could have contained his dreams which would explain why Voldy not being able to see his potential conquest of the whole magical world, only the domination of the Ministry of Magic. Nagini could have just contained his intelligence and ambition with no ability to learn anything useable like how to defeat love as that was in another Horcrux... Possibly, creativity put into the most creative of the Hogwarts Founders items, the cup of Hufflepuff. His insight beyond his current situation may have been sacrificed to the Diadem, and so forth. In other words, with the destruction of each Horcrux, he was cut off from a different part of himself. While I believe that his dreams were sacrificed by creating the diary I believe the one thing he never acknowledged was the comprehension of love and that was the Horcrux attached to Harry... The one he never meant to make and the one he was least likely to notice.
@kshiftkometh - Technically, yes. He did know love or more like knew the definition of it but nothing more. Harry could feel love but also the absents of love from both himself as well as the Horcrux.
"February 3rd. Dear Diary, Dumbledore ignored me again. Time to start planning for muggle exodus." "March 15th. Slughorn tried to feel me up again. I keep telling him it's not the type of 'darkside' I am interested in..."
Tom Riddle's Diary Entries: November 10. Someone overheard me dramatically describing my plan for world domination in the shower. I told them that The Death Eaters is is the name of my band and Lord Voldemort is our new song. I hope they don't tell Slughorn. He'll make me sing for him. November 20. Bad hair day. Being bald would be so much easier. December 1. They told Slughorn about my band. Now he wants me to sing for him. How many days of detention would I get if I used a memory charm on a professor? December 10. Slughorn made me sing my Lord Voldemort song at the Slug Club. Good thing I'm so good at improvising. Note to self: shower after everyone else is asleep.
Step 1) find diary Step 2) replace with Death Note Step 3) leave it where you found it Step 4) get ready for laughs.....assuming this person doesn’t know you personally to right your name in it
True. But the most obvious percentage for a spell like the Horcrux is half. It doesn't seem like the kind of thing that requires a graphing calculator to determine exact percentages. More like something that just happens. But it is all conjecture so we can't say for sure and if Rowling ever commented on it we might get some T.E.R.F. nonsense along with it so best she remain in her Scrooge McDuck money bin with her billions.
@@JonathanSmith-ge4pi splitting can mean multiple things. Because splitting can be 50/50 but also 70/30 or whatever. Unless there is more info about the percentage split. Possibilities my friend
Personally I think that Tom Riddle was just experimenting to see if he could create a horcrux and didn’t write or take good care of the book because it had a muggle origin unlike his other horcruxes.
“Split” and “split in two” doesn’t necessitate two equal parts. It’s a natural assumption, but not necessary. I think the consciousness of the diary is the most convincing aspect. It was basically him by the end of the book. Great vids!
😁😁 I appreciate the mention of the argument of the "amount of the soul" in each horcrux. My reasoning was that I don't think that math can be applied to a soul, that a split soul doesn't necessarily mean divided exactly in two, if a glass falls on the floor and by chance you break it into two, it doesn't mean that the pieces have the exact same size that's why I argued that the theory on the amount of soul in each horcrux was neither here nor there , also a soul isn't an object that you can measure. I'd rather think that the "amount" of soul you lose is proportinate to the atrocity of your choices. But however you look at it, there is no doubt that the diary is, together with the locket, one of the most important horcruxes. Since it was the first, it marked his decision of ridding himself of his humanity forever and contained the part of his soul that was still coming from a smart ambicious boy. Since then, we know that his soul has become more and more unstable and fragile, and progressively less human, therefore creating weaker horcruxes in Rowling's world. Great video, I really enjoyed this one!
@@alexrobi1176 all he knew was it would open the chamber of secrets. Had he known what if truly was, he probably wouldn't have been do careless with it
I’m not sure where I heard/read this from but the ministry of magic was currently rummaging through Malfoy Manor for any kind of connections to Voldemort and he had to remove it from his possession in fear of having more trouble with the ministry. I know after the fall of Voldemort the first time Lucius tricked the ministry that he was under the imperious curse to avoid trouble. So him placing the diary in Ginny cauldron is a way to hide evidence of his connections to Voldemort. I’m not sure if he was aware of how important the diary is in terms of it’s one of the 7 horcruxes and also did it to spite the Weasleys and Dumbledore
Im betting Voldemort initially made it sentient as a way for him to talk to himself, without actually talking to himself. If that makes any sense. Hence its communicative abilities. The possessions, however, i have no explanation for.
Awesome theory, and that makes complete sense. Yeah Myrtle was the first person he killed, so it would make sense that the first horcrux that Voldemort makes would be the strongest. Yeah and if he did put 50% of his soul into it, that is why it was a danger of him coming back if Ginny died. Yeah that would definitely explain why Voldemort was so harsh to Lucius (the prophecy was not really do or die to have, since he knew a lot about it anyway. But yeah if you count the diary, it would be the second major screw up for Malfoy). I had a random thought after watching the video. I wonder if subconsciously Lucius was trying to sabotage the possibility of the dark lord coming back, due to his life situation now being so fastly different (he was a lot of things for sure, but I think Lucius really did love his family and would really do anything to save them.), so that is why he gave it to Ginny. Yeah I think he knew what the diary was, or at least could guess how important it was, and I wouldn't be surprised if Voldemort gave him a bit of instruction for it. Lucius was at that time second in command to Voldemort, so he was trusted. Yeah for me I just cannot rectify how someone who was second in command to the greatest dark wizard of all time, could become the worst death eater of the bunch without a reason. So it would make sense that family would play a role in it, I really don't think Lucius was fully on board this time with being a death eater because of this. Just my theory but if Lucius kinda didn't want the dark lord to come back, because of his family or he was worried about his societal image if the dark lord was weaker this time around, then it would make sense why he fucked up so hard with the diary in the second book.
In the movie, Riddle said that he left his diary back, so someone later can fulfil Slytherins destiny. The dairy was the first Horcrux, so 50% of the soul. But before that one should answer how the soul works in Harry Potter. I understand it as some form of earth-bounding, an anchor so to speak. One Voldemort wanted to make even stronger while using the magical number seven. The Horcrux serves as body for a fraction of the soul so it cannot go into oblivion after death. It seems that only the whole soul can, there Voldemort could fly as dust after his death and not went to oblivion. But there seems to be still some connection because Voldemort felt the destruction of the Horcruxes and Tom Riddles Dairy seem to know current events. Maybe Riddle should have asked the Muggles how cloning works. Would be easier.
Julian S. In the books Voldemort doesn’t know Harry has destroyed the Horcrux until they break into Bellatrix’s vault in the 7th book. He knows about the diary because of Lucius, but Voldemort doesn’t know about the ring and the medallion until they take the hufflepuff cup. That is one thing that always bugs me about the movies. It does make sense that he could feel the Horcruxes death since they are a part of his soul, but it’s clear in the books that Harry sees Voldemort search for the Horcruxes and finding them missing after they retrieved the cup and Voldemort was informed of it.
@@sabrinapayette5198 But in the movies, as the diadem and the snake were killed, you see the Voldemort felt the loss, although he did not see the destruction in person.
Julian S. Yes, but the movies and the books are two separate things. The movies are adaptations after all and you can’t really consider that canon. I’m not saying it doesn’t make sense, it could have been like that in the books too.
@@sabrinapayette5198 I don't know, but perhaps it's a matter of proximity. The nearer V to a recently destroyed horcrux, the stronger pain(?) he will feel. As for the diary, V is too weak and far perhaps to feel it's destruction. V was weak since Harry was only a year old, and regained power at the end of the Tri-Wizard Cup Tournament.
"Maybe Riddle should have asked the Muggles how cloning works." I always thought about that! Why isn't he just created multiple bodies, and changing it as clothes, when one body is run out its time, or something? :"D Immortality-mission will be accomplished...
Tom may not have been the one who purchased the diary, it could have been a gift from a fellow student (most likely from Slytherin house) or from a professor. I think the most likely professor who might have purchased it for Tom would be Horace Slughorn, although it could have been Albus Dumbledore except I doubt Albus would have purchased it anywhere except Diagon Alley.
I hate to beat a dead horse, but slughorn always described the process of creating a horcrux with “part of the soul”. Split also doesn’t necessarily mean split in half. Someone as great as Voldemort would most likely be able to gauge how much soul he wanted to endow a horcrux with. Though i do agree that the diary was probably the most important horcrux as it was the only one capable of actually reviving him (to our knowledge at least)
Harry Potter Folklore im so excited you replied though of everything you could have said im really surprised to hear that. Voldemort was the greatest wizard to ever live. I know that’s debatable but at least in terms of dark magic theres no competition. I really liked your video on him and its why i kept coming back. In it you speak about how he pushed the boundaries of magic further than anyone ever had. Dont you think this would be one of those cases? I mean hes already splitting his soul. Its not too much of a leap to be able gauge how much. This is all assuming the “half the soul” thing of course.
Well its lack of protection is a simple explanation really. All of the other horcrux's that voldermort made (aside from harry) play the role as a "safe" for a piece of his soul, so they have protection spells placed upon them. Simple to understand. The diary did not play the same role. As a horcrux, the role the diary played is as a weapon. The role of the diary is to eventually open the chamber of secrets. Since there is no reason to keep it protected, but to let it fulfil its mission, Malfoy was all the protection the diary needed until it was time for the diarys mission to begin
I'm a little surprised voldy didn't become an animagus. I would have thought he would consider it a special type of magic and more self-validation that he was awesome.
@Mario I don't think so, it's a very complicated procedure that takes a long time to perfect. That's why it is so impressive that the marauders managed it when they were at school.
I'm sure Tom would have thought the task a waste of time. He wouldn't feel more powerful turning into another animal. All he cared about what immortality and power.
The diary did have half of his soul, as you said since the Horcrux process SPLITS your soul. Meaning it split it in 2 and that every horcrux thereafter would have a less and less percentage of his soul. Voldy was incredibly hard on Lucius, since he was the culprit for half of his life essence being destroyed over a petty mundane grudge. I think the locket was the second Horcrux since it had the next highest effect on the bearer of it (e.g. Ron's crappy mood). There has to be a link between potency of the Horcrux power to % of soul placed within the object. Fantastic video covering a concept in which many of us just gloss over giving no real thought to
@@webagoly the curse wasn't because of the horcrux. It was a countermeasure for whomever put the ring on. And I'm mistaken by saying the locket was the 2nd.
According to the actual books there was the plan to give it to someone to continue Salazar's work that he worked on with Lucius, however Lucius used it as political move
I like to think the diary was his test Horcrux, and seeing it successful, but then realizing what a common item it was, decided to ask Slughorn if he could split into more parts.. so he could have more meaningful items holding his soul. He probably realized he could communicate with himself with the Diary, and thought it would make a great weapon later on.
@@fedeeeeee He was already wearing the ring in Slughorn's memory, which means he had already killed his father and grandparents by this time and we know he used this murder to turn it into a Horcrux. And even though there's nothing in canon to suggest it, I'm pretty sure the "spell" should be performed soon after the murder splits your soul in order to incase it in an object. I doubt you can "save" a murder you committed in the past, just to use it whenever you want! lol
@@MrYoda-su4qo Let's assume you're right. Can you explain to me how Tom Riddle was able to transform the diary into a horcrux by killing Myrtle Warren, then when she is dead, he frames Hagrid for the opening of the chamber and then later get's the diary as a reward?
@@jan-willemlammers5806 Tom still has the diary when he framed Hagrid. Possibly made a telepathic link (or some magic) with his diary horcrux and recorded it there.
Great video! I agree and think they would definitely merge. Voldemort did anything and everything so he thought would always allow him to "rise again". Whether he use a recipe, or a host body, what was left of his spirit would form into Voldemort again like in the Goblet of Fire. His soul was so ripped up from so many Horcruxes, he could never be handsome again, and 2 Voldemorts just doesn't make sense. I also agree with you as to why Voldemort was harsh on Lucius. But I also think he needed to make an example out of him. Lucius was once his next in command, and when he returned it was obvious that Lucius was not prepared, and didn't really believe that he would come back. Plus he told the ministry that he was under the imperius curse and basically denied actually dealing with Voldemort on his own accord and this was Voldemort's next in command. Death Eaters like Bellatrix and Barty Crouch Jr, never renounced Voldemort, and held strong convictions that Voldemort would return. His statement in the graveyard "not even you...Lucius" clearly made Lucius a marked man. He made sure that every time Lucius messed up, he would make an example out of him. I think sending him to retrieve the prophecy was almost a set up. He knew there would be a battle, because he sent the fake image of Sirius being tortured to Harry, and at that point he had very little faith in Lucius, and his abilities and loyalty.
Its impossible for the diary voldemort and the main voldemort to merge as one being. What happens when you make a horcrux? The books explains that it splits the soul to a point it cannot by repaired by any magical means, the only thing that can repair the soul is an act of true remorse. Remember harry at the end saying to Voldemort he should show some remorse? Because Harry had seen his soul in limbo. For Diary voldemort and main voldemort to merge together the main voldermort would have to be remorseful in his actions he took creating the diary horcrux. He killed moaning myrtle to do that who was a muggle born of whom voldemort despised. Without being truly remorseful for her death, the 2 souls of voldemort would remain unable o merge together and thier simply would be 2 voldemorts
I'm not going to argue for or against the Diary having half of Voldy's soul, however, I get very annoyed at the incorrect logical leap that is constantly made. Murder splits your soul. That does not say evenly split your soul. Think of the standard wish bone. When split one side is always bigger than the other. There are plenty of splits that are not 50/50. It is incorrect to assume that the split is 50/50 each time.
The splits you speak of are physical splits which are uneven due to the pressure or its effect never being properly balanced, caused by the physical irregularities of the pressure applier. Magic is not physical
I imagine before it even became a horecrux the journal was enchanted to hide it's contents from anyone other than Tom Riddle kinda like the Maurader's map. It also seemed to function like a pensive where yo out could fall into it and view memories as they unfolded. I also agree that it held the largest portion of his soul. There is no way around it. That's why Voldermort appeared so inhuman by the end, his body contained the smallest fragment of his soul aside from that piece in King's Cross which was not even capable of communication. What I really wonder is why Lucius didn't write on it and it take him over. I'm sure Voldermort wouldn't care to sacrifice his death eater. Also, like you mentioned, what if somehow two embodied versions of Voldermort existed? What a nightmare. And like, would they collaborate? Lol, strange.
Fantastic job as usual. This spelled out a lot of the diary horcrux. It never dawned on me that since it had been the first horcrux contained hall of his soul. I've said it before, but I was not disappointed. Good luck with your upcoming project, I am confident that it will be fabulous!😊❤️
I made an interesting observation about the size of each soul portion. I agree with you that the diary was the biggest part. It would make sense that when he started making more Horcruxes, his main soul would be less and less, which is why he looks so inhuman towards the end. I also think you're right, as none of the other Horcruxes would provide him with a replacement body. I would hate to be Lucius Malfoy when Voldy found out that it's his fault that the diary was destroyed.
Love your content. I agree that the journal was an incredibly important horcrux; and wondered if its lack of protection was due to Tom's relative inexperience with the magic given he was only 16yrs old when he created it.
I mean if Tom had just picked up his diary off the floor when Harry was fighting the basilisk it wouldn't have been a problem. He had Ginny's wand and Harry's wand, and he would've had the diary. If Harry tried to pry it away, Tom could've sent him flying with a spell. Problem solved.
Don't often leave comments on this site, but this time I have to. I think that you nailed it. Anybody who tries to argue the point has a tall hill to climb.
What you must be consider: in the books the "Diary" is a calender! So I think you know how a calender looks like there is not as much place to write in. So he made notes instead of writeing. Later he magical ads his memories and plus made a horcurx out of it! So it is memory plus a part of soul! That the differance to the other Horcurxes. A soul is not something you can messure. It is not like a paper you split. When Voldemort plans to make his soul into seven parts they must be equal big (he even asked is not 7 the most magical number) but as I say a soul is not a thing. You can not messure things you only have a concept of what is it. For exemple you don't konw the consistance of a soul. Is it like water, mist or a solid thing? Edit: When he made his first horcurx he has killed 4 People. So his soul was very ripped. And until he made his last horcurx Nagini he had possible killed more than hundrets
I got that question yesterday: How Wizards lived through some of the most known pandemic of the 20th century (like the Spanish Flu of 1918) I might be a fool for asking such a question, but i'd like to know. :) )
I always thought that the diary was more of an experimental Horcrux, since it was his first. The diary is the odd one out compared to the other Horcruxes, who were all powerful and legendary magical objects (I'm not counting Nagini, since at the time he didn't have another choice). Plus, it was so simple and non-descript that no one would have guessed it was a Horcrux (something that he SHOULD have done with the other ones, but we know that he didn't). So I think that the diary was an actual diary, where Tom Riddle wrote about his opening of the Chamber of Secrets and he later made it into a Horcrux, to see if it would work and the diary was the only object he could possibly think of turning into one at that moment.
I still think that Voldemort would have punished Malfoy the same if he had made a different mistake and then another time because Voldemort does not accept failure especially when Malfoy made one twice.
This is a very well thought out video, but I do have one criticism/question. How would Voldemort be able to merge with his 16 year old self from the diary horcrux when , as far as I am aware, the only way to reunite a split soul would be to have remorse for what you did to split it in the first place? It seems like something Voldemort would never do.
Excellent point. No doubt Tom was going to use a new dark art spell he created. Imagine his surprise/anger/horror when that spell failed.🤯 Tom was smart but as with most smart criminals, he neglected what most people would seem as obvious. This is where the massive ego comes to play. He thought so highly of himself that he never considered the possibility of failure.
My personal feelings on the diary were that Voldemort had already enchanted it as some type of pensieve + diary to hold his thoughts/memories he didn't want anyone to have access too. He may have heard early on about some people being able to read minds (occulmancy) and didn't want anyone to be able to read his. As a young untrained wizard, turning the diary into a pensieve with no one's guidance was possibly his first great feat as a wizard. This, for me, is the only way he would have made something with his birth name engraved on it such an important, powerful magical artifact for him. It contains instructions on how to open the chamber of secrets, it's a source of proof of his being the heir of Slytherin (since the locket hadn't been found yet)and it's a horcrux that could return him to a body. That's just too many important things for one artifact to hold without the diary itself being special to him
If the theory that his soul split in half each time he made a horcrux is true, it makes sense that the diary had half of his soul. Then each one to follow would be split in progression. So the 2nd horcrux would split half of half his sould, giving it 25%, the 3rd half of that, so 12.5%, the 4th 6.25%, the 5th 3.13%. So each horcrux became weaker or less valuable in a sense that the final one had such a small percentage. Harry, according to this theory, had 1.57% of Voldemort's soul, so less than 2%. Yet, just enough for Harry to be important and obtain Parseltongue and see Voldemort in his dreams. He also went on to give half of that to Nagini, giving her 0.79%, without realizing Harry was a horcrux (if my timeline is correct.) That left him with basically 0.80% of his soul by the time all of the horcruxes were destroyed. It also makes sense why the diary is the only horcrux that had the ability to bring Voldemort back to life. If it consumed the soul of another soul, it likely would have enough of Voldemort to restore him. Something with, let's say, 6%, probably would have that same power. This was really interesting and fun to think through. Thank you!
Questions: Are we assuming that Tom set the Basilisk onto Myrtle? Does that count as his #1 kill, since he didn't do it by his own hand? I can only imagine him setting the Basilisk free, and then saying "Oh, S#+$! What am I going to do with this? Oh! Here's my diary, let's see if this horcrux thing really works!" Ha! I love your content! Keep up the great work:)
The fact that Tom's 16-year old self is stored int eh Diary, makes it most likely that this was the first Horcrux that he made, as he was still very young then.
That's an interesting theory. It could also explain why most dark wizards who created Horcruxes only created one. It allowed them to still pass in society to some degree. If true then it would mean that rather than 8 equal fragments (which would require knowing the end point to have worked and having control over the process) then we have: Tom Riddle's Diary: 50% (1/2) Resurrection Stone: 25% (1/4) Helga Hufflepuff's Cup: 12.5% (1/8) Salazar Slytherin's Locket: 6.25% (1/16) Rowena Ravenclaw's Diadem: 3.125% (1/32) Harry Potter: 1.5625% (1/64) Nagini: 0.78125% (1/128) So ultimately Harry would have had very little of Voldemort in him hence why it affected him to such a minor degree and Voldemort himself barely has any soul left so that is why he is such an inhuman monster both physically and mentally. By the time he tries to kill Harry he basically has about 3% of his soul left which is not enough to sustain his body and could explain why he became worse over time. He wasn't just less charming and manipulative because he didn't want to be. He literally couldn't be that same person again who could ensnare followers with a web of poisoned honey. All he had left were the threats and insults (and actual murder/torture). By the time he died his final death, even if he had been capable of such a thing in the first place and neglecting whether or not the destroyed portions would have been restored, experiencing remorse to heal his soul would not have been remotely possible as he didn't even have tattered ribbons of a soul left but a few fibers at best.
Wouldn't it be cool if tom riddle from the diary had absorbes somebody's life and came back to life, whilst voldemort was still alive. You would end up with voldemort jr. and voldemort sr.
2 questions. 1) Do you have a video on how to make a horcrux? (Or at least the parts we know) 2) Do you have a video on the order the horcruxes were made? (I know the first 2, and I’ll presume either Harry or Nagini was the last, but what about the rest?)
It's a cruel irony that Myrtle was killed to create the diary horcrux, then Ginny threw that diary through her when she chucked it in the toilet.
Was she an intended victim, though? She may have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
David Ray she was a Muggleborn so she was a target but I personally don’t think she a target
I don’t think Myrtle was an INTENTIONAL target but still a target counted over as ‘luck’
Savage bro. I love it
But if that version of Voldemort fused with his spirit remnants from the rebounded killing curse, I think it would have altered his appearance closer to his deformed body.
Who *NOSE* for sure?
After that, the pages of the diary move to the date in which Riddle blamed Hagrid for that, and then Harry gets absorbed into the memory of the events of that day, as if the diary was a Pensieve
it happend on that date, the framing of Hagrid
J R I agree, the book is more specific than the movie most didnt read the book. The journal i is basically a pensieve. Pages are filled with memories rather than ink. Once it became a horcrux it basically became a sentient pensieve
@@tonderainigelchadambuka8725 another interesting detail that links Riddle’s journal to a pensive is a subtle clue in Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows part 2: in all the scenes Harry uses the pensive when first ‘entering’ the memory the construct of the memory appears to form through a primordial soup that resembles- you guessed, black ink.
The one true pairing: Tom Riddle and Tom Riddle's Diary
Boy writing "I am Lord Voldemort" in hearts all over those pages.
The only true pairing is young restored Riddle from the diary and Old Voldemort restored from ritual in 4th book. Ultimate self-cest
Diary 1st ring 2nd tom opened the chamber n his 5th year then that summer met his uncle & killed his dad & grandparents

How was he related to the famous Salazar Slytherin
Blackcat 21 his mother was from the Gaunt family, a wizarding family of pure bloods that were directly related to Salazar Slytherin. His mother of-
course broke that cycle when she put Tom Riddle senior(Tom Riddle senior was a muggle) under a love potion.

Love the video but technically splitting doesn’t Mean half. Think about money splitting. Sometimes it’s 50/50, 60/40, 70/30 etc
But technically it also doesnt mean 60/40, 70/30

Even if he could choose how much of his soul to pour into the diary, he would’ve poured a lot into it if he intended it as a weapon.
Great video, I really enjoyed this one!
before watching the video I know that the diary was more used for a weapon to complete Salazar Slytherin bidding.

@@sabrinapayette5198
I don't know, but perhaps it's a matter of proximity.
Can't wait for your trailer for the Tom project
Tom may not have been the one who purchased the diary, it could have been a gift from a fellow student (most likely from Slytherin house) or from a professor. I think the most likely professor who might have purchased it for Tom would be Horace Slughorn, although it could have been Albus Dumbledore except I doubt Albus would have purchased it anywhere except Diagon Alley.
The diary came from a muggle library of Vauxhall Road.
The locket was starting to take Ron's soul.
Harry: gets controlled by Voldemort
Ginny: first time?
The way Harry destroys Riddle in the movie was perfect. No one could have done better than Chris Columbus.
I don’t think there’s any way whatsoever he could decide how much of his soul to remove..just way too far beyond any wizards power
Harry Potter Folklore im so excited you replied though of everything you could have said im really surprised to hear that. Voldemort was the greatest wizard to ever live. In it you speak about how he pushed the boundaries of magic further than anyone ever had. Dont you think this would be one of those cases? I mean hes already splitting his soul. Its not too much of a leap to be able gauge how much. This is all assuming the “half the soul” thing of course.
5:35 J. K. Rowling said it would have "strengthened the present-day Voldemort considerably."

Can a wizard train himself to become a snake animagus if so can he speak parseltongue?
T perm as you become an animagus you can’t decide what animal you become.
@Mario quite am opinion
I'm sure Tom would have thought the task a waste of time. He wouldn't feel more powerful turning into another animal. All he cared about what immortality and power.
I think Voldemort forgot about his Diary tbh.
Voldermort randomly getting chest pains and he's like
Oh no.
Oh no this is it
Ohhhhhhh no
Lol did you even read Chamber of Secrets?

That Transition is so smooth and fitting. Well done.
Fantastic video covering a concept in which many of us just gloss over giving no real thought to
I think by that logic the ring would have been the second one, Dumbledore got a worse deal than a crappy mood :D
No the 2nd horcrux was the ring by the time voldy graduated hogwarts he already had 2 horcruxes & id say by age 20 he had 5
@@webagoly the curse wasn't because of the horcrux. It was a countermeasure for whomever put the ring on. And I'm mistaken by saying the locket was the 2nd.
Thank you for finally answering my question, that's all I needed to know about Tom Riddle's diary.
When’s Tom riddle animeded storry
no date yet..trailer will be coming first..
Ok thx 🙏 hope u make it threw this virus and have a good night
Ok thx 🙏 hope u make it threw this virus and have a good night
According to the actual books there was the plan to give it to someone to continue Salazar's work that he worked on with Lucius, however Lucius used it as political move
If you split a cookie, you DON'T NEED to split the cookie in half -.-
I like how you posted the video at time when everyone is sleeping

I like to think the diary was his test Horcrux, and seeing it successful, but then realizing what a common item it was, decided to ask Slughorn if he could split into more parts.. so he could have more meaningful items holding his soul.
He probably realized he could communicate with himself with the Diary, and thought it would make a great weapon later on.
I'm pretty sure he first talked to Slughorn about horcruxes and then made the diary an horcrux
I doubt you can "save" a murder you committed in the past, just to use it whenever you want! lol
The boy that played the young Tom Riddle in the flash back scenes (not in COS but the later movies) is actually Ralph Feines' nephew. Sweet!
Could the Diary have been a gift? A last thing his mom bought before leaving him at the orphanage? A gift from idk Bellatrix, Lucius or Slughorn?
I kinda like that theory. Maybe slughorn bought is as a gift for his prized student
no he got it as a reward for catching the guy( Hagrid) who supposedly opened the chamber of secrets
you 2 clearly didn't watch chamber of secrets
@@MrYoda-su4qo Let's assume you're right. Can you explain to me how Tom Riddle was able to transform the diary into a horcrux by killing Myrtle Warren, then when she is dead, he frames Hagrid for the opening of the chamber and then later get's the diary as a reward?
@@jan-willemlammers5806 Tom still has the diary when he framed Hagrid.
Possibly made a telepathic link (or some magic) with his diary horcrux and recorded it there.
9:01 the moment he called him 'voldy' XD
you should do a what if harry hadn't destroyed to diary and tom drained ginnys life
Great video!
Great video! Once again, something I hadn’t really thought about but is now much deeper
Can you do a theory on what would happen if it wasn’t a full moon in Prisoner of Azkaban
This actually makes perfect sense. O.o Thanks for making this video
Ginny, the girl who threw a bit of soul down a toilet...
Lol
Love your content.
I agree that the journal was an incredibly important horcrux; and wondered if its lack of protection was due to Tom's relative inexperience with the magic given he was only 16yrs old when he created it.
I always wondered what would happen with Diary Voldemort meets other Voldemort.
Whilst I do agree that the creation of a horcrux halves the soul. It is also important to note that 'split' does not necessarily mean 'halve'.
I mean if Tom had just picked up his diary off the floor when Harry was fighting the basilisk it wouldn't have been a problem. He had Ginny's wand and Harry's wand, and he would've had the diary. If Harry tried to pry it away, Tom could've sent him flying with a spell. Problem solved.
love the vids😀😀 hope you and your family are safe and healthy through these rough times.
In Hallows, Voldemort is upset that Lucius failed to *protect* the diary, so clearly it wasn’t meant to be randomly given to some person.
Imagine Tom riddle's diary being a death note

I look forward to all your videos, sir!
Your explanation is always the best.. I love your vids.. keep growing Dean

Another great video harry potter folklore keep up the good work and great commentary as always Dean. I hope your staying safe during this pandemic
This is awesome and can you do a vid about how mistreated Ravenclaw are!!
Imagine his surprise/anger/horror when that spell failed.🤯
Tom was smart but as with most smart criminals, he neglected what most people would seem as obvious. This is where the massive ego comes to play. He thought so highly of himself that he never considered the possibility of failure.
Mathematically your idea makes sense. I wondered about that when I read the Chamber of Secrets myself.
He also went on to give half of that to Nagini, giving her 0.79%, without realizing Harry was a horcrux (if my timeline is correct.)
That left him with basically 0.80% of his soul by the time all of the horcruxes were destroyed.
I don't think so. I'm pretty sure if you fail at making a horcrux you can die
Haven't seen a video from this channel in a while.
True, But I bet he's preparing the Tom Riddle animated story! Can't wait to see it!
The fact that Tom's 16-year old self is stored int eh Diary, makes it most likely that this was the first Horcrux that he made, as he was still very young then.
5:00 Dude, the Locket was feeding off of Ron's lifeforce in Book 7!
That's an interesting theory. It could also explain why most dark wizards who created Horcruxes only created one. It allowed them to still pass in society to some degree. If true then it would mean that rather than 8 equal fragments (which would require knowing the end point to have worked and having control over the process) then we have:
Tom Riddle's Diary: 50% (1/2)
Resurrection Stone: 25% (1/4)
Helga Hufflepuff's Cup: 12.5% (1/8)
Salazar Slytherin's Locket: 6.25% (1/16)
Rowena Ravenclaw's Diadem: 3.125% (1/32)
Harry Potter: 1.5625% (1/64)
Nagini: 0.78125% (1/128)
So ultimately Harry would have had very little of Voldemort in him hence why it affected him to such a minor degree and Voldemort himself barely has any soul left so that is why he is such an inhuman monster both physically and mentally.
Harry himself was a big Horcrux too I think same Amount of Horcrux went in Harry as the Diary
Wouldn't it be cool if tom riddle from the diary had absorbes somebody's life and came back to life, whilst voldemort was still alive. You would end up with voldemort jr. and voldemort sr.
Mini-Me.
2 questions.
1) Do you have a video on how to make a horcrux? (Or at least the parts we know)
2) Do you have a video on the order the horcruxes were made? (I know the first 2, and I’ll presume either Harry or Nagini was the last, but what about the rest?)
