I’m a retired competitive dancer and cheerleader, and do yoga multiple times a week - I find it SO helpful for back pain 🥰 I think what people don’t realise is there are literally hundreds of styles of yoga, that all use different techniques and poses. Bikram/Hot Yoga uses the same poses every practice, and having a rounded spine isn’t an issue (which is asking for a back injury!). I practice Iyengar where correct alignment is the biggest focus. Nothing is ever pushed too far, props are used to ensure correct form and the teacher will correct anyone who is putting themselves at risk. For example, the first pose in your video (the lunge) - my teacher wouldn’t allow us to sink into it, arching the back, hips not squared, with a disengaged core 😝
However, I’ve been to Hatha classes taught by inexperienced teachers who were clearly not confident enough to correct poor alignment from people in the class.
The yoga poses themselves aren’t the issue - a good teacher will warn before the pose that if you have certain injuries or conditions, you shouldn’t do it/you should do an alternative. It’s the yoga style, quality of the teacher and the willingness of the student to actually listen (because I’ve seen people actively ignore the instructions and push to get further than is safe lol). The point of yoga practice isn’t to be as flexible as possible. It’s about overall wellbeing too, mindfulness and being kind to your body. It’s not one size fits all, so when I see spinal surgeons making blanket statements about yoga, I wonder if they are aware it’s not all one style lol. 🤓🥰

Wonderful perspective! Thanks for sharing! How many years have you been practicing yoga?

I have practiced yoga for years. I remember the time in yoga studios where you could feel forced to “perform” all the poses to the max range. Women pushing harder were the “good thing to repeat”. I am glad I can listen more to my body nowadays. Thanks for the science-based examples!

Out of curiosity, are you a practicing Yogi? Or what's your movement practice(s) of choice? 🙂

“Excessive stretching”: Honestly what proportion of people stretch their lower back too much as opposed to too little? Excessive anything is, well, excessive. A bit like warning about the excessive consumption of healthy food to the American public can cause issues. Yeah right.

Good point Matt! I made this video to also share other alternatives.

Also, to clarify further, I think it's an important warning because LOTS of people have the "intuition" that stretching their back might be helpful when they have back pain. But in reality, it can make things worse. So, because it's so common in yoga classes, or with my 1-on-1 students, I think it feels appropriate and fair to say, "Hey, maybe DON'T focus on stretching your back so much!" Hope that makes sense. 🙂

@@GotROM yeah, mate it makes sense. I’m just thinking of all the dudes who use every excuse to do anything that takes effort. They get comfort from advice telling them to take it easy.

@@GotROM yep, all of the above. But for the last five years, really been pushing flexibility. I feel like I need a range that I can get into before increasing that range by adding strength; which is starting to give me the ultimate: mobility. Love your work bro
