      hi Marisa, there are two hostels on Kauai, the Honuea Hostel and the Kauai Beach House, both of which are in the town of Kapaa. I'm sure there are more hostels on Oahu and certainly on Maui and the Big Island as well. Just try one of the hostel booking websites such as Hostelworld.com, or try Booking.com which has a larger selection of different places to stay. Have a great trip!

    You can also use couchsurfing, you only have to pay once to use it which I think is a little over a $100 bucks, and after you pay that fee, you can do all the couchsurfing you want for free. Down side is, it can be sketchy and dangerous, but I've heard some pretty good reviews from people who have used it. I plan on using it myself when I go and travel. I'm definitely going to be stepping out of my comfort zone.

    I get confused with all of the island names! I’d love to see Maui (heard it was good) but I want to go to Honolulu as well. I work for an airline so I fly standby and I was thinking of non-Reving there and buying a ticket back (they are less than $200 right now!). Camping sounds good, I could bring my stuff, but may rent car if I get a good price. Not exactly sure where I want to go (I want to see ALL of Hawaii) but I want to choose one island and spend about 3 days and make it a little less expensive than it would normally be. Wish I had friends to crash with there.

    How do you protect your gear in your tent. I see a lot of the time your not carrying it.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  9 лет назад +10

      sdnalyam Good question! Basically what I do is, first of all, I carry all of my most important things with me in my smaller daypack: laptop, camera, wallet, passport, cash, etc., etc. And then I keep that bag of stuff very close or keep a good eye on it if, for example, I'm swimming at a beach. Then I basically just hope that no one breaks into my tent. At the campgrounds it feels pretty safe, because your tent is out in the open, there are other people around, and also nobody walking by knows if you might be in there taking a nap,since they can't see inside. So it seems unlikely anyone is going to try to break in. And if they do, well then I lose some clothes and maybe my backpack or sleeping bag, but not the end of the world. However I also take one other additional measure, which is that I put a tiny padlock on it after zipping it closed, where there's a little loop on the zipper and another loop on the other side to lock it to. Someone could easily cut either of the loops with a pair of scissors. However, that means someone can't just zip it open quickly, they would have to have some scissors handy and take that extra step, which would also look suspicious if anyone saw them. So it's not completely secure by any means but it's the best you can do, and then you just have to let your stuff go, enjoy your day and if something gets stolen, well that's just life.

  • @breiss4540
    @breiss4540 7 лет назад

    Hey Gabriel,
    I like the sound of camping, but how do you keep your valuables safe? (camera equipment/laptop/ etc) since a tent is not secure? Unlike a hotel or hostel that has lockboxes, when you are camping you are super vulnerable. What do you do to keep your things safe?

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  7 лет назад

      During the day I would go out with my valuables in my day pack that I carry with me. My laptop was really small, so it could go in my day pack as well as my camera, wallet, etc. Then I would only leave in my tent my big backpack, sleeping bag and clothes, and just hope for the best, and it worked out fine. Another option is to get a rental car and then you could leave your valuables in there.

    Hey Gabe! Saw you are home! Enjoy your little break before your next adventure :) So I'm looking into Hawaii for maybe December or sometime next year. Watching your Hawaii travel videos and camping! You are too cool my friend :) your videos make me smile. Any suggestions on WHERE to go? I'm not sure which island to visit. My trip would only be a week long so I'd like to maybe learn to surf a bit with my 16 year old son, see the island of course and anything else in open to suggestion. I know there are several islands so I don't know how to narrow it down where to fly into and where to stay 🤔 any advise would be appreciated! Just got back from Belize, Grand Cayman, Roatan and Cozumel :)

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  7 лет назад

      hi Jennie, right on, that sounds like a pretty epic trip you just went on. As for Hawaii, I would suggest either Kauai or Maui. I've spent tons of time on Kauai so I can guarantee it will be an awesome time, tons to do, not too touristy, amazing beaches, nice variety of things to see. It would be my #1 suggestion. I haven't actually been to Maui yet but it sounds amazing as well and it is where I will go the next time I go to Hawaii. You might grab one of the "Hawaii Revealed" guidebooks for whichever island you decide to go to so that you have some good info on hand. So I would say, if in doubt go for Kauai, you can't go wrong, but you might look into Maui as well and see how it compares.

      Not really, it's awesome there throughout the year. Basically it will depend on your luck with the weather. Winters are more likely to be wet and stormy, but weather can also be hot and sunny in the middle of winter. Summers will be more reliably sunny and warm. How much did he say the Polynesian hostel was a night. I played it 3 times I can’t understand him. If it’s 23 dollars a night that’s 690 a month you might as well get an apartment but I’m looking at it from the aspect of living there

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  6 лет назад

      Yes, $23 per night. You could probably find an apartment for around the same price or even cheaper, but that's living there and not traveling. I was only staying in Honolulu for a few days. So that's about the cheapest accommodation you'll find in Hawaii for short term.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos

      Basically pick any island, they will all do the trick in that regard. The four main islands are Oahu (where Honolulu is), Kauai (where this video was filmed), Maui and the Big Island. They're all amazing and have tons of adventure opportunities. Just do a bit of research on each one to get an idea which one sounds the best, and if possible try to go to more than one. You can fly cheaply between the islands.

      Great. You can take a city bus right from the airport to the area by the hostel. However it depends on your luggage. You can't take large suitcases or huge backpacks, but I was able to take my medium-sized backpack on the bus. Otherwise I guess you'd have to take a taxi. Not sure if there might be shuttles.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  9 лет назад +2

      ***** I haven't had any problems in that regard. Certainly there are incidents and some resentments and stuff but overall things are pretty mellow. Not something to be too concerned about, as long as you're generally friendly and respectful. Also learn a few of the local customs such as taking off your shoes before entering homes, don't sit on picnic tables, learn a little Hawaiian, etc.

      +Frestley I agree with what Gabriel said. I've lived on Oahu now for almost a year and the thing that gets talked about most is Waianae area being unfriendly to white people. I've been there a couple times but never experienced anything negative, I think it's mostly hype. In any case I think that sort of negativity is directed more at white males if anything. Just my two cents though. Aloha! :)

    • @PURELifeMedia
      @PURELifeMedia 8 лет назад +1

      +Jackfruit Love I'd say pretty respectful, unless you're causing trouble or not respecting the locals you shouldn't have a problem. There's a lot of mixed races, mostly asian. I've had only positive experiences personally but I've heard others swear white people are not welcome. I'd say experience it for yourself and be the judge. :)

    Did you stay at Naplai? and is there a boat or ferry that took you from Oahu to Kauai? and thanks for the tips!

      Yes I've hiked and camped on the Na Pali coast, it's pretty amazing. But there is no ferry that goes from Oahu to Kauai. They tried to do a ferry service but the locals stopped it. So you have to fly.

      One other thing, do you know of age restrictions for checking into hostels? I imagine they will very. But any idea?

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  8 лет назад +1

      simon eiseman
      I don't think there are age restrictions for hostels anymore, not that I've ever come across anyway. I think they used to be like that, and they also used to be called youth hostels but nowadays lots of types of people like to travel so it isn't restricted just to younger people.

      Glad you enjoyed. Some people like camping though, especially in Hawaii, good place for it. By the way I also have videos about Paris:

    Gabe, thanks for the info! Just bought a ticket for November 2018, gonna solo it! If you could give more info on Kauai that would be helpful, and where do you keep your personal items when swimming or away from camp?

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  6 лет назад

      Excellent. Here are some more of my videos from Kauai:
      ruclips.net/user/gabejedmosearch?query=Kauai
      As for where I keep my stuff, I take all my most important things such as cell phone, laptop, camera, etc. with me while I'm exploring during the day. Then I leave the rest in my tent such as clothes, big backpack, sleeping bag, etc., and just hope for the best. So far so good. Have an awesome time in Hawaii.

    I heard it is not safe to camp there and that the locals really not like like tourists and are not wanted there

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  9 лет назад +3

      ***** I've lived in Hawaii twice as well as visited and camped, hitchhiked around, etc. and never had an issue. Certainly incidents do happen. The most important thing of course is to just show respect. If you aren't bothering anyone, getting in anyone's way or messing up their view (i.e. pitching a tent right on the beach), you most likely won't be bothered.

    What's the cheapest way to get from one island to another? Do you ever rent a car and use the vehicle camp sites?

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  9 лет назад +2

      Power Up There's a ferry service between Oahu and Maui but other than that there are just flights, which are pretty cheap, like $50-80 usually. I only rented a car once but that was when I lived there and had an apartment. But yeah that would be a good way to go too.

    • @powerup6108
      @powerup6108 9 лет назад +1

      I notice they have Mcdonalds and Taco Bell all over the islands, my 2 favorite restaurants when I want to quickly stuff my face on the cheap. Usually 2 bucks fills me up on the dollar menu. Does Hawaii have the dollar menu?

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  9 лет назад +1

      Hmmm, I'm really not sure about that, I forget.

    • @powerup6108
      @powerup6108 9 лет назад +1

      Gabriel Traveler If I want to eat healthy for real cheap I get the dollar salad at Mcdonalds and add a 68 cent can of Walmart tuna and some sunflower seeds. Those places are also good for free wifi.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  9 лет назад +2

      Yes I've made use of the wi-fi there lots. The southwestern chicken salad is pretty good, but not on the dollar menu unfortunately.

      I always bring a camping mattress, that's essential. Fortunately the beach parks have a grassy lawn, so that also helps. As for the rain getting in, depends on your tent but I have an awesome tent that's totally waterproof. It rained pretty hard in Hawaii and I stayed nice and dry.
