Born and raised on Oahu 36 years ago and I thought I was sick of it all but watching this makes me want to take a week off work and live it up according to your tourist guide. Maybe I'll rediscover what everybody from out of town finds.
I lived on Oahu for 4 years in Makakilo. Malama’s (small market) in our neighborhood had the delicious poke. I would stop and pick up a few containers on my way home on Friday and feast all weekend. Yum
Love these traveling vids as a person who is born and raised in Hawaii. Main thing I want to point out is that you just respect everyone on the island and culture. Mite have some super sour apples, but still try to respect everyone when you travel here. West side is a beautiful place, but have to be very humble when you go there.
Well just never know. You may end up looking like an ahole to others and that can anger people. But that's all anyone from Hawaii wants when people from outside come here. Just to have a kind and humble attitude and heart. Cause there are lots of people coming here outside of Hawaii thinking because they have tons of money, they can say or do whatever they want.
Do t know if this neighborhood has changed in a year but what a dump of an area. Visited on Sunday and it was closed. Can’t judge the food until next time if I can ignore the surroundings as I go in.
Have always had a passion for Hawaii and lived there for a bit. Planning on moving ‘home’ with my little one some day. This video made me smile. Thank you Matt! Your video was wonderful!
My wife and I recently returned from our honeymoon in Oahu, and we used this video as a "road-map" for much of our stay there. So glad we found this!! Every suggestion was spot on and the food recommendations were simply amazing! We would have never known about Giovanni's Shrimp Truck or the Diamond Head Market & Grill (our two favorite meals there) without this video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of the island!
Curtis G. This is the best kind of comment! Makes me feel like what I’m doing is worthwhile. Really means a lot, so thanks! These videos take a lot of effort (and time) to make, so it’s wonderful to know they’re not only appreciated, but helpful. So glad you had a great trip! All the best, M
If you ever come back, there's a place called the food company in enchanted lakes. Really good food, and desserts there. Another good place for desserts is the liliha bakery; try the coco puffs🤤
I've never taken a vacation on my own. One family vacation at age 14 and I'm 31 now. I'm finally in a good spot to do something big and Hawaii was the first place to come to mind. David Martin - Thank you! I spent my childhood on Oahu and enjoyed many wonderful times at Waianae and Nanakuli collecting shells. Great memories. Beautiful beaches on that side of the island. Oh, and Makaha! My brother used to surf there when we were kids in the 60’s.
Barbara Winsor What can I say...good is my passion:) It’s always going to be a major part of my videos. I always say, “I travel the world on my stomach” :) Cheers, M
I expected you to mention the Polynesian Culture Center. The fact that the performers / guides are college students, from all over the Pacific, who are paid to learn and retain their indigenous culture, makes it more than just a tourist site.
@@alicetelford9027 Yes, BYU students come from all over the Pacific. That makes their work at the Polynesian Culture Center a way to pay for college; a way to learn and reenforce their native culture; and a way to make The PPC experience authentic. So, more than just a tourist site. I still wonder that he doesn't mention it.
Thanks and Great video! Lived on Oahu for 3 years as a kid from 89 to 91 when my dad was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Taking the wife to Oahu in December and will hit up many of these spots. Can't wait!!

Great video Matt! You know, when I talk to someone who's been to Oahu and never left Waikiki I make an involuntary squeaking sound: there is SOOOOOOO much to see and do. Go on a good guided walk into the rainforest for starters, it's so beautiful. Also the Bishop Museum was quiet when we went so we could take our time and really learn-- planetarium teaches about travel and navigation by the stars. Highly recommended.
While I spent 6 weeks on Kauai in 1982, I never spent time on O’ahu. I’m coming in November to meet my birth-father, who has lived there since 1976. Ironically, he was on Kauai when I was there. I found him, and my siblings through DNA testing this year. Your video gave me a lot of places, to look forward to visiting.
🤙😍 🌴🏖🌞 When you said that coming to Hawaii feels like coming home, I can relate. Once when I flew in to Oahu I actually said that to the person sitting next to me, but I always feel that way. Aloha. 🤙🌺
I just started viewing your vlogs and even though this vlog is 3 years old I still learned a lot about a place I lived with my parents during the 60's and 70's then on my own after college in the mid 70's. I have been going back as a tradition for the last 3 years btwn Christmas and New Years. Seeing friends in Honolulu then New Years with old friends in Kailua Kona / Captain Cook area. Heaven! I enjoy your enthusiasm.
Polynesian Cultural Center in L'aie also north on the island of Oahu. I recommend it for everyone. As well as the L'aie Temple Visitors Center. All of which is beautiful 😍❤🌎
Of all the videos I have watched on RUclips about Oahu, this is my favorite. We finally made it to Oahu last year and we’ve visited most of the places Matt mentioned.

Hi Matt! We watched this video before our trip to Oahu and followed every single recommendation you provided. We are so thankful to you for sharing this wonderful information!
Interesting how you started off with Waimanalo, as I've been going there for close to fifty years. Most tourists don't know about it unless they stumble upon it, while out driving, but it's been my favorite little spot since I can remember....
I used to live like almost right across the street from sunset beach for most of my life As a little girl I would always pick up as much trash I could on my amazing land. It’s so important to respect our lands and not to litter. I would always pick up trash I saw someone drop and walk up to them and give them there trash back and point to the trash can. Oahu is a fantastic vacation spot but not the best place to live . I still love and will never forget my childhood of many , many beaches.
Matt it's been my dream to go to maui hawaii since I was 16 yrs old I'm 66 this Aug not got to fulfill my dream yet but this Yr I will make my dream come true because now I have my own travel agent business and I get to make me my dream come true HAWAII ALOHA HERE I COME ❤❤
Hey Matt, so cool to learn that you spent your summers there. Mark's mum treated us to a trip there in 2009 and we stayed pretty much around Waikiki with a few day trips out to Hanauma Bay and the North Shore. A couple years ago though we house sat for Mark's cousin in Mililani for 2 weeks and really explored the island and the food. It was pure delight. Beautiful job on the video!
This video is so helpful!! My husband and I are going to Oahu in a month and are in planning mode. Note, I really appreciate the food suggestions. I really don’t like feeling unprepared with the meals we will eat because it then cuts into the time we could spend on activities when trying to figure out what to eat while on the trip!
Well here I am again 😂😂 2 weeks away from another journey to Oahu, FINALLY since covid hit...... I'm watching yet again to remember all the great places you recommended and to get the juices flowing ! ! I can't wait ! Thanks again Matt ! ! Awesome video ! ! !
Been getting ready for my first trip to the islands and this has been my favorite video so far. Thanks for all the awesome tips I can't wait to see it all in person!
Funny & to the point. Probably one of the best RUclips videos I have ever spent my precious time on. Got to learn a lot for my upcoming trip to Hawaii. Thank you!
Matt, Thanks so much for the informative and humorous video. Wasn’t going to go back to Oahu this year because of how touristy it is, but I’m now considering it.
After spending a week on the big island, we were meant to have a 2 hour layover on Oahu. Our connecting flight was pushed 12 hours so we rented a car and explored the southern portion of the island for the day. It is safe to say that we will defiantly be returning. From the little bit that we saw, we could’ve believe the incredible beauty around every corner. This is a great video, very very well done and helpful!!! Thanks for taking the time to make it! I know it must have been awful to film...
Visited Oahu for the first time last October and visited many of the spots you recommend in the video. My wife grew up on Oahu and we will be returning in May with my parents. My dad is a Vietnam veteran and has always wanted to see the Pearl Harbor memorial and I am so excited to be able to take him.
Not to mention there is Big Wave Dave's surf board rentals, along with other ocean gear just a few doors down from the Stay Hotel. Kings Village (on the corner of Koa Ave.) will soon be torn down as the property was recently purchased by Hilton Grand Vacations and they will be building a 32 story hotel on that site. Sadly, there isn't a lot about Waikiki (except for its name) that suggests - Hawai'i - anymore. Even Dukes Lane. It's been reduced to practically nothing and, it's totally hidden from view. Either someone tells you where to look for the few remaining Kiosks, or you stumble across them on your way to the beach from the Kuhio St. side.
You made me missed my home of 29 years. I left June 29, 2023 to travel the world. Am in Bali, Indonesia right now heading to down under and New Zealand.
I was stationed there from 97-00. To wake up in the 808 State every day was very cool. People save all year to vacation there for two weeks. To live there is a privilege you don't realize you have until you are gone. Although I lived there, I acted like a tourist and got out and enjoyed being there the entire 3 years I was there.
Great Oahu travel advice! I was born/raised in HI and you hit all the good places... When you said Matsumoto's Shave Ice I was going to knock you for it, but you did say it isn't the best, its touristy and just OK! Waiola is my fav on Waiola street. Next time you need to try Aiea Bowl's Alley Restaurant and try their Tasty Chicken (their take on Korean Fried Chicken) get the combo plate with chicken and beef and don't miss that cake in the display case. Kind of out of the way so my backup is Zippy's KFC (Korean Fried Chicken). Ono Seafood spicy poke bowl is awesome!! and I eat 6 Leonard's malasadas in one sitting! I just got back last week and now you made me homesick again... :)
I’m having a Hawaiian breakdown....missing my home. This was a phenomenal video. Still can’t stop thinking of Leonard’s & Helenas best food ever! Mahalo Nui Loa!
I just want to be near the water again, one of my favorite things is water and oceans and beached ahh I just want my feet to hit the sand, see the crystal clear blue water, have the waves it me, the islands are so beautiful and omg I just eek!
So sad to now watch this video after my trip. I did almost everything mentioned and had the time of life on this beautiful island. Thanks for tips; Or should I say mahalo!!
Flowergurl 05 for 8 night at a clean place without a view right in the heart of Honolulu, a flight from Massachusetts, and a car for 8 days cost me $2950 for two people. Food trucks are big out there for lunch which is cheap. But I’d bring around $600 for just yourself in spending money as a minimum. Most activities are pretty cheap
Superb video! I have been watching lots of videos to help prep for an upcoming trip to Oahu. Hands down your video is the best! Well done and thank you!
You have me sold on Helena's Hawaiian Food. All the other places looked good too, but at 7:30 when you're eating those short ribs in slow motion, you look like its deliciousness is about to make you cry, and that angelic guitar strumming music is playing in the background - that was pretty epic and unforgettable . I'm leaving for Hawaii today. I won't forget about Helena's Hawaiian Food.

Sunshine Devela Thanks so much! So glad you like the vid! Yeah, I’ve spent a lot of time on Oahu. My mom grew up in Aina Haina. Love Oahu.
Cheers,
M
Sunshine Devela I totally agree, Sunshine! I was pleasantly surprised and it was a great video.
Used to live here. Man do I miss it. The surf boards on bike racks. The diving, the fishing, late night swims
Why’d ya leave
Stationed here. Thanks for the tips. Cant believe I'm getting paid to live in paradise.

I just watched this just now, and I'll be heading there by July, I was wondering where you would recommend for house hunting. Im a veteran that is a Fed. Employee, that will be assigned there, and being im going to be there I'm going to use my VA too secure a house. I heard the rent is just as high as a mortgage. Any recommendations where to look? I have a 12yearold and a dog.. any advice is much appreciated. SoldiersAttic@Yahoo.com

HOOAH same!!
I got stationed here in 2018. Bought a house and EASing at 10.5 years.. still have only left for work. Love it here.
l feel compelled to comment on your wonderful video. The scenery, food and info you gave put a smile on my face. I am planning to move to Oahu in a few months to make a fresh start and thoroughly enjoyed your informative insights and sense of humor. I can finally put my hula lessons to good use! The greatest compliment I can give you is that you remind me of my husband who passed away last year. Thank you!
This is probably the most complete and comprehensive all in one Oahu island guide that I could find on RUclips
Thanks so much!! Glad you enjoyed it! Really appreciate the kind words. I have a new Kauai video too if you’re interested. All the best:) - M
❤🎉I’ve watched zillions of videos on Oahu in the 14 times I’ve been there and this highlights the places I’ve been to and will most likely take my nieces to January upcoming😊
Matt, we used this video to plan our trip to Oahu and it was PERFECT! You're our new travel guide 😁 Thank you for such great content!!!
How many days did u stayed and how much money you spent ? .
@@FranzNaitsab We stayed for 10 days and I'd say we spent between $20-40 per person everyday on food and about 300-400 per person on excursions
Watching this video from Honolulu. Only took a minute to fall in love this video and this guy! Thank you for the tips.
About to travel to Oahu again for the 3th time and i really feel the Aloha.. when u first fall in love with Oahu u will do EVERYTHING to come back to i again 🥲❤
Heading back to Oahu for the third time next weekend. This is by far THE BEST and comprehensive guide I've seen! Will definitely check out your recommendations I haven't explored. Thanks for this 🙌👍
Atticus Crown So glad you liked the vid! Have a great trip! Happy travels!

I still live here, and I whole heatedly agree, Wiaola's is the best for shave ice. Also one very important tip for all visitors, please please please keep it clean. Put your trash in trash cans and not dump it where ever.
Love your calm voice, not irritating!!! Love your sense of humor. I think you would be fun to travel with!! Your videos are jam packed with info. I appreciate you!!
Also add no littering ANYWHERE, wherever you go whether it’s Hawai’i or the mainland, throw your Opala (Trash) Away
I watched alot of hawaii videos this year for a trip. You video is by far the best ive seen.
James Gao Thanks so much! I really appreciate it.

Any additional places you recommend to visit? :D
This is by far the best travel guide I 've ever seen! Thank you Matt!
Born and raised on Oahu 36 years ago and I thought I was sick of it all but watching this makes me want to take a week off work and live it up according to your tourist guide. Maybe I'll rediscover what everybody from out of town finds.
Just got back yesterday. I’ve never felt such sadness leaving a place. I love Oahu.
I cannot wait to visit here!! and soak in the culture and meet the beautiful people ❤love from the mainland!!
wear reef-safe sunscreen
I’m on a trip to Oahu right now and this is exactly what I needed! Simple, non-touristy places to visit/eat ❤️ Thank you!!!
baghashvili So glad you’re finding it helpful! Have an amazing trip!!

ZeroHyperGaming Glad you like the vid! Thanks the the thoughtful comment:)
Cheers,
M
Well just never know. You may end up looking like an ahole to others and that can anger people. But that's all anyone from Hawaii wants when people from outside come here. Just to have a kind and humble attitude and heart. Cause there are lots of people coming here outside of Hawaii thinking because they have tons of money, they can say or do whatever they want.
Do t know if this neighborhood has changed in a year but what a dump of an area. Visited on Sunday and it was closed. Can’t judge the food until next time if I can ignore the surroundings as I go in.
This was Helena’s Hawaiian food I just mentioned above.
This video was so much help for my trip to Oahu. Did almost everything u said! The beaches and the food is amazing
Have always had a passion for Hawaii and lived there for a bit. Planning on moving ‘home’ with my little one some day. This video made me smile. Thank you Matt! Your video was wonderful!
As an Aussie who's visted Oahu regularly, I feel you have really nailed the highlights for those thinking of visiting. Great content 😎
Selena J Thanks so much! Glad you liked it!

All the best,
M
If you ever come back, there's a place called the food company in enchanted lakes. Really good food, and desserts there. Another good place for desserts is the liliha bakery; try the coco puffs🤤
I'm so happy that the flea market in Aloha stadium is still here. The last time I was there was 2006 and I got some great stuff.
I've never taken a vacation on my own. One family vacation at age 14 and I'm 31 now. I'm finally in a good spot to do something big and Hawaii was the first place to come to mind. This video was awesome. I've always wanted to scuba dive. I had no idea how to even start planning such a big trip, but this video is great.
I am on cloud 9 right now!!!! I’m taking my little one for 4 days and I cannot cannot wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am following this video and your tips step by step!!!
This guy is absolutely right in saying you should get all your souvenirs at the stadium flea market. It's a one stop everything mega shop.
Why no mention of leeward side ? makaha, waianae, nanakuli, makua, Kaena Point, the old true hawaiian people and culture. Just as beautiful
David Martin Totally agree...mostly no mention because I grew up spending my time on the windward side, so I just know it better. Also, I could only include so many things in the video without it becoming too long. But thanks for the comment:)
Cheers,
M
David Martin - Thank you! I spent my childhood on Oahu and enjoyed many wonderful times at Waianae and Nanakuli collecting shells. Great memories. Beautiful beaches on that side of the island. Oh, and Makaha! My brother used to surf there when we were kids in the 60’s.
Matt, you could have included those spots if you hadn’t spent so much ridiculous time talking about food.
Barbara Winsor What can I say...good is my passion:) It’s always going to be a major part of my videos. I always say, “I travel the world on my stomach” :)

I expected you to mention the Polynesian Culture Center. The fact that the performers / guides are college students, from all over the Pacific, who are paid to learn and retain their indigenous culture, makes it more than just a tourist site.
All are students from BYU Hawaii.
Matt Thank you! I love your personality, this video is Fantastic! Please mention no leaving garbage etc, Paradise doesn't need to be dumped on by all the tourists, including me, lets keep it clean:) Mother Earth:) Respect the Land, The Culture:)

Make sure to secure a rental car first. Rates are ridiculous nationwide.
The best video I have watched about Hawaii for those who want to visit. It has a lot more information and recommended places to visit. Thank you!!!
It is the gathering place after all
🤙😍 🌴🏖🌞 When you said that coming to Hawaii feels like coming home, I can relate. Once when I flew in to Oahu I actually said that to the person sitting next to me, but I always feel that way. Aloha. 🤙🌺
Love it -- lived in Hawaii for almost 8 years. Miss the place like crazy!
30 And A Wake Up I bet! It’s a wonderful place:) Glad you liked the vid!

Yeah did you move back to main land ?
I live in Oahu... and this video made it seem waaaayyy better than it really is lmao

and when you live here it’s kinda overrated
I just started viewing your vlogs and even though this vlog is 3 years old I still learned a lot about a place I lived with my parents during the 60's and 70's then on my own after college in the mid 70's. I have been going back as a tradition for the last 3 years btwn Christmas and New Years. Seeing friends in Honolulu then New Years with old friends in Kailua Kona / Captain Cook area. Heaven! I enjoy your enthusiasm.
Born and raised here in Oahu and I’m impressed how good this video was
Polynesian Cultural Center in L'aie also north on the island of Oahu.
I recommend it for everyone.
As well as the L'aie Temple Visitors Center.

Of all the videos I have watched on RUclips about Oahu, this is my favorite. We finally made it to Oahu last year and we’ve visited most of the places Matt mentioned.
so good! I've never been so captivated by a travel vlog this long before! I'm 13 minutes in and just had to pause to comment! So helpful! We have traveled to 30+ countries now so we love watching travel videos to get inspired! Thank you! We are headed to Oahu to visit family in Mililani next month! So excited to eat alllll the foooood now! also, on an editing note, I LOVE your creativity going from the drone shot to the scuba diving underwater- AMAZING IDEA. Keep up the good work!

We are in Oahu right now, this video is amazing, our bible to explore! Thank you Matt!
I’ve been going there for almost 40 years:) Love it there.
All the best,
M
I used to live like almost right across the street from sunset beach for most of my life
As a little girl I would always pick up as much trash I could on my amazing land.

Thanks so much for the informative and humorous video.

Try the Stay hotel in wakiki . I paid about a hundred per night. A 1 minute walk from the Banyon tree. GREAT place to stay!
American Patriot Hunter Great suggestion! Thanks!
Cheers,

Not to mention there is Big Wave Dave's surf board rentals, along with other ocean gear just a few doors down from the Stay Hotel.
Kings Village (on the corner of Koa Ave.) will soon be torn down as the property was recently purchased by Hilton Grand Vacations and they will be building a 32 story hotel on that site.
Sadly, there isn't a lot about Waikiki (except for its name) that suggests - Hawai'i - anymore. Even Dukes Lane. It's been reduced to practically nothing and, it's totally hidden from view. Either someone tells you where to look for the few remaining Kiosks, or you stumble across them on your way to the beach from the Kuhio St. side.
GOD I LOVE HAWAII !!!
You made me missed my home of 29 years. I left June 29, 2023 to travel the world. Am in Bali, Indonesia right now heading to down under and New Zealand.
Are you a time traveler? June is 4 months from now. 🤔
6 malasadas at once??? Dang, I feel my blood sugar levels shooting up just thinking about it.
I personally think that baldwins shave ice is good as well the ice isnt as chunky its really fine but thats because i may live in pearl city
Wow, the most thorough travel tips ever!!! Just subbed!!
Need reservation for Hanauma Bay, good luck, and now Diamond Head hike. Mahalo for not giving up the better hikes and keeping the local spots local.
So sad to now watch this video after my trip. I did almost everything mentioned and had the time of life on this beautiful island. Thanks for tips; Or should I say mahalo!!
Since you been and I haven't how much money would you say, I should save up to take and enjoy the trip?
Flowergurl 05 for 8 night at a clean place without a view right in the heart of Honolulu, a flight from Massachusetts, and a car for 8 days cost me $2950 for two people. Food trucks are big out there for lunch which is cheap. But I’d bring around $600 for just yourself in spending money as a minimum. Most activities are pretty cheap
As a half-hawaiian I can only recommend tita's grill in Kahuku on the north shore!
I loved Tita's Grill. But they closed down. I was there 2 weeks ago. I miss their cocoa rice with the huge slice of butter bread. Sorry to say.
