That’s exactly my problem. Standing still blows hot air but driving is ok. Could blow colder I’m sure. I suspected it’s the compressor and it seems I guessed right by your explanation.
Sometimes a simple thing as compressor connecter can stop a compressor , I told mechanic can you check connecter, he said it is broken and fixed it and it worked
Mine seized up on my 2013 F150 5.0 finally. Snapped the belt in the process. Luckily that belt only runs the ac system pulleys and the other belt runs the water pump and alternator so I can still drive it.
@Nimble KIllaI'm still driving mine just fine. I removed the a/c belt completely and just keep all my windows down when I'm driving for cooler air. Lol. Not wanting to spend $300+ for a new compressor kit at the moment.
I just received a recall notice and warranty extension from Honda re: AC compressor shaft seal leak. Did you get a notice as well? It is dated June 2023. Covers 2016-2021 Civics and 2017-2022 CRVs for original owner and any subsequent owners.
I pulled a vacuum for 30min, added the recommended freon now it is whining badly and it actually slows down the car or robbed a lot of power when the compressor kicks in
Is increasing strain on the engine(almost to the point it stalls)when the compressor kicks on a sign it's going bad. For some reason my car automatically kicks on the compressor(even when it's cold and the heat is on) when I turn on my front defroster,so it's not even running the ac,but still putting a noticeable amount of strain on the motor. I plan on keeping the car forever as it's 27yrs old and the model is becoming a more and more scarce, and it's something that's always happened so idk if it's normal, but it's more noticeable than on any other car I've ever had
Our 2012 Tucson did that a few days ago, and now it's rattling badly. Whelp... time for a new compressor, condensor and receiver Drier, seals and expansion valve. Everything else there was replaced not too long ago. I think I'll replace the ac compressor because i can't figure out what else could be wrong with it. The AC compressor clutch is fine.
I just installed a new air Conditioning system on a 2007 trailblazer I bought the kit from Napa it came with a new compressor and a little aluminum tank I forgot what it was called But we installed it on the car it came pre-charged with oil in the compressor and we actually dumped it out and added oil to it but the air worked amazing and I mean amazing would put frost on your windows for about two months and then three days ago we pull up to a red light and within 10 seconds the air went from freezing cold to hot. So I pop the hood and the compressor was not spinning. We checked the low pressure valve and it is working properly and the Freon levels are good. The only way the compressor will come back on is if you shut the car off and let it cool off for about an hour and when you start it back the compressor will run. And if you jump the relay with a wire the compressor will kick on and as soon as it kicks on you can take the wire out and put the relay back in and it will run for about 15 to 20 minutes again, But on a normal morning when you start the car the compressor will run for about 30 minutes sitting in the driveway in about 15 minutes if you’re driving it and then it will shut off and not come back on unless the car is cooled off. every mechanic shop I have spoke to has no clue why this does that. Do you think the new compressor is bad?
This was a great help thank you. I spent most of yesterday struggling with mine. Is the system supposed to pull the freon in? I put a full vac on first.

Your vid was awesome!! I have an old 96 Saturn SL2 with a 27 year old Zexel compressor. It engages fine but doesn't seem to have any output. Pressure on LP side shows static 55psi and 43psi at idle which then drops to 35psi at 2000rpm. Air does gets a tiny bit colder as you pointed out. When I spin the compressor by hand it spins wicked easy, like it isn't really doing that much. Questions: Could I go with a used Pull-A-Part compressor and get a couple more seasons? Do I need to change the condenser as well? I can order an R-D as they're wicked cheap on Rockauto (like $8). I hate to throw new parts at this car. New compressor is like $150-200. Ugggh!

How do you know when to change just the compressor or the whole system? I've been told and seen on YT once the compressor goes bad fine metal particulate contaminates the system an will continue to blow through the evaporator, condenser, etc and will quickly blow back into the compressor and ruin the new one.
See my thing is, my a/c works fine. But when I do have it on there’s a whistle that repeatedly goes in and out consistently. Do y’all know what it can be? Maybe a belt tension or serpentine?
Mine works, i just recharged it put in one 12oz can, it blows cold air now…might need another can, but clutch was coming on every 7-10 seconds, but it makes a ratteling noise?? Just had a new compressor like 6-7 years ago. I put in freon till the green pop up thing stayed ip when compressor was on…then i checked an it was blowing cool air, but the clips didnt turn color?? See how long it works i guess??
If the pressure switch is faulty would the out cover plate still spin with the pully whether the air-con is on or off as I can't hear the compress clutch clicking?
Mine will stay hot for about 8 to 10 mins, Only the fan will keep blowing despite driving around. After 10 mins, it will start working normally. I can park, switch off my engine, and twill still work when I need it, but the whole thing repeats itself the next day...
my exact problem thanks man hey what brands should i stay away from i need a new compressor and thinking of getting a piston upgraded from a rotor style on my 2006 mazda 3 2.3 l ????
@Nimble KIlla just drove my car to L.A. for the week and car died. It was a faulty battery and it fried my alternator. Changed both and car runs like normal. Still have the sound which I think is coming from the compressor but will look at it sometime this week.
My system is only giving static pressure 45psi on both high and low side. With the car on and compressor engaged, there is no movement on the gauges. While the compressor seems to be the most likely culprit, I hear that a stuck open expansion valve can show the same symptom. Is there any way to troubleshoot this further without swapping out parts?
Checked the AC on my GF 2004 Toyota Corolla that was blowing hot air. The magnetic clutch doesn't engage / spin on the compressor. With the AC turned on the fan under the hood doesn't spin. Checked the AC relay by swapping it out with the horn relay, horn didn't work, AC relay was bad. I replaced the AC relay but it didn't fix the problem. The fan still doesn't spin and the magnetic clutch on the compressor doesn't engage / spin. Not sure what to do and can't really afford going to a mechanic (they quoted me $125 just for the diagnostic).
I have the exact same issue and pressure reactions as shown in the video. The air is cool but not cold. Since this new compressor is not seized do I need to replace the condenser? I just replaced the condenser six months ago. I have had this issue from day one with this new compressor.
HI. i recent purchased a car sight unseen and noticed that theres a lot of brown dust around the ac compressor clutch. The cooling appears to be fine in the car at the moment, but I'm curious if this is a sign of a previous issue or just normal wear. Thanks!
wait so how would you know the difference between a stuck expansion valve issue vs a bad compressor. in essence I would assume both would show on the ac gauge that the low pressure is too high and that the high pressure is too low (I might be wrong). but it that were the case how would you know which one is the issue? there's a big difference money wise to replace an expansion valve vs replacing an ac compressor. also I've heard that when you replace an AC compressor you have to replace the condenser, dryer and possibly the expansion valve. is this true or do u perform an AC flush to rid the system of metallic particles. I have a Hyundai Sonata 2013.
Nice informative video. What about a compressor clutch that activates for only three seconds every time with then blinking A/C light with no codes.....and known good relay, front and rear amplifiers, good ohms reading on connector, good freon charge, good pressures, good voltage to connector and clutch.....but will not stay engaged. ?? Thanks
I have a Chevy Equinox 2010, and a guy I'm using is saying $397.96 new and.$188 used, and $140 for labor. Are these fair and honest prices. I want to get used, but I've been told new is the way to go
Hi GreaseMonkeyRepairs, I have exactly same reading that you have in the videos at both idle and with 2000rpm. My AC compressor has electronic control valve and wondering if I could replace that to solve the problem. Please let me know your suggestion.
So weird! my 2016 Off Road, 4x4, all of a sudden just shut off. (green ac light went off and stays off). When I push the AC button on, I can hear it run then it shuts off, green ac light goes off. I checked the fuse and the replay, they are working properly. I had a friend come over and he said the compressor is running which is good news, however, he then assumed the refrigerant its empty so he was going to add freon but, his gage says the freon in full. That is where we are confused. Also its the 1234y NOT the usual 123A. Any insights? I want to sell this truck but I need to get this fixed first. We live in Florida. We do NOT have the $$ to have it serviced or even diagnosed at a local toyota dealership, they are way expensive. Just installed new air cabin filter, it was atrociously bad, but that hasn't fixed it at all. ???Help??? MIGHT be a bad pressure switch>?? Praying mine if NOT behind the firewall.....ugh!
I have a 2008 Accord V6 coupe. Air was blowing hot compressor not kicking on, checked fuses and relay all good jump started my compressor thru relay added some freon compressor started working. I put the relay back in and finished charging the a)c then I noticed a hissing coming from the high pressure hose,it was leaking around where the metal went into the rubber part. I ordered one and waiting on it to arrive. Is this common? Could there be other issues to cause this part to fail? It worked fine last year, noticed this the first time I used it this year.
I have the same issue with my accord v6 bro. when I recharged my ac it was making hissing sound like empty can type noise. and I kinda saw it bubble where u add the Freon in. I’m not sure if it’s a leak on the needle or what. Did u end up fixing ur problem ?
I have a question? We recently put a new battery in our 2004 Toyota Sienna and now there is a clicking noise coming from under the hood when we turn on the A/C. WHAT could THAT be?!
If the passenger side is blowing ice cold, bur the driver side is blowing hot hot hot (not just warm, but HOT) is it possible that my ac compressor is going bad, or would you say it's probably something other than the compressor?
I got a 2006 Silverado sometimes it blows ice cold then it stops after awhile I’ll go inside a store come back out turn truck back on and go and I’ll turn ac back on and works fine again but then stops after awhile and it’s rare but some times it stays cold till I arrive where ever I’m going even if I’m on the freeway or stop and go traffic I could leave the truck in the sun when it’s 107 degrees out sides and will now ice cold then stops any advice where I can fix the problem
My compressor stays on, it keeps truck kinda cool in 95f outside, but anything below 85f outside it’s pretty cold in the truck. Freon is full, gauge is where it should be. Sometimes gets wArmer then cold while driving. Coolant is full but pretty dirty, is that a big problem? Any help?
i replaced my radiator, water pump and thermostat and with the system getting bled the ac still doesn’t run as cold as it should. i brought it to a local shop and they fixed the problem initially. 38 degrees it got to. til about a week later i started to notice it would only get really cold when i would get on it at higher speeds, then eventually get warmer but still kind of cold. not 38 degrees cold but around 60. would this be a ac compressor failing? no leaks from what i could tell while it was being worked on and like i said it was fixed for about a week.
I have the opposite problem. Now I have installed a variable-spring orifice tube in mine which is supposed to make cooling at idle work better. The orifice tube is clean and working. Here's the symptoms: When I put it in drive and go, air coming out the vents will drop down to the high 30s or low 40s. Yay! But then, on the return trip from town, there is a major problem. Cooling like that will only happen at low rpm (idle). When I accelerate, the compressor starts cycling and I get 70 to 75 degree air out the vents. I have watched the OBD-2 graph and the cycling coincides with the poor A/C performance. If I slow down and stop and roll slowly, and sometimes up to around 40 mph, I can get it to work. Past that, the compressor cycles every 2 to 5 seconds, on and off. The rear air seems to be mostly unaffected. Do I have a clogged front evaporator?
Did you get the warranty extension from Honda on this issue. Ours was just received in the mail today. Covers 2016-2021 Civics and 2017-2022 CRVs. Original and / or subsequent owners. They will also reimburse for any repairs related to this as long as it meets the reimbursement requirements.
My clutch and compressor fan are working fine on my 2001 Honda Civic, but it’s doing exactly as you describe...air gets cold when driving and warm at idle. I don’t feel like my a/c clutch ever disengages as well...is that normal? Low side pressures are higher than I usually see them and high side is lower than usual? I did add some Freon but didn’t help. Any thoughts on what the issue might be? Thanks for your video and assistance!!
Scootdawg I would check your A/C condenser. The issues you described can happen if the condenser has debris in it or is just not working properly. If it is in fact the condenser I would highly suggest replacing it when you can since it can lead to a much more expensive compressor problem in the future.

Thanks man my car has the same guage readings, glad this video is up. Time to get digging in the engine bay🙃
Mine never gets cold. It blows well but only warm air. The gauge says I have coolant. Should I change the compressor?
Yes that's what happened to me
check that your compressor clutch is going on and off..... go from there
What about when the ac is running cold? But there's smoke coming from under the hood?
Mine is turning but blowing hot air, also pulley is grinding. Never had one do that.
How will it differ from low refrigerant? it should produce similar situation in either case.
Please make another video showing different how to read the the sight glass
Yo best video on this honestly lol. The pressures you showed helped me determine my compressor is bad.
Does this work the same way with heat and would a bad compressor cause over heating
Was just wondering if the ac compressor can cause the car to sound like it doesn't want to start if it's going out and the clutch is making noise
@Nimble KIlla just drove my car to L.A. for the week and car died. It was a faulty battery and it fried my alternator. Changed both and car runs like normal. Still have the sound which I think is coming from the compressor but will look at it sometime this week.
@@mr.raiders70293 years later...what happened
Amazing video, thanks.
Is it true that the PCM controls the the AC compressor and will shut it off when you're accelerating to free up our power?
What if you have low Freon? Will it have the same symptoms?
HI. i recent purchased a car sight unseen and noticed that theres a lot of brown dust around the ac compressor clutch. The cooling appears to be fine in the car at the moment, but I'm curious if this is a sign of a previous issue or just normal wear. Thanks!
So if the temperature doesn't fluctuate the compressor is still ok?
wait so how would you know the difference between a stuck expansion valve issue vs a bad compressor. in essence I would assume both would show on the ac gauge that the low pressure is too high and that the high pressure is too low (I might be wrong). but it that were the case how would you know which one is the issue? there's a big difference money wise to replace an expansion valve vs replacing an ac compressor.
also I've heard that when you replace an AC compressor you have to replace the condenser, dryer and possibly the expansion valve. is this true or do u perform an AC flush to rid the system of metallic particles. I have a Hyundai Sonata 2013.
If you were to replace this part, how much would you charge for installation? Just asking because I don’t want to get ripped off
1 million dollars but for u friend 2
Thanks for the video. My AC works on my 2008 Highlander but noise comes from the engine compartment when the AC is on. Any hints?
79 degrees.. try 130!!!! Lucky i fixed my civic . Now onto my toyota
?? Thanks
my a/c blows in high till I get on freeway than blows alot slower yet still cold. Is this a compressor or electrical issues,?
I have a Chevy Equinox 2010, and a guy I'm using is saying $397.96 new and.$188 used, and $140 for labor. Are these fair and honest prices. I want to get used, but I've been told new is the way to go
Yeah the price sounds legit
Get new and the price is right if hes a mechanic.
Used manifild guage so you can know the suction pressure and high side pressure there so many causes of ac not cooling well
yup
Very informative, thank you.
Hi GreaseMonkeyRepairs, I have exactly same reading that you have in the videos at both idle and with 2000rpm. My AC compressor has electronic control valve and wondering if I could replace that to solve the problem. Please let me know your suggestion.

Is it true that a malfunctioning thermostat sensor or thermostat cooling engine effect compressor operation?
So weird! my 2016 Off Road, 4x4, all of a sudden just shut off.
Ac and heat only work on high. What's the problem?
If the passenger side is blowing ice cold, bur the driver side is blowing hot hot hot (not just warm, but HOT) is it possible that my ac compressor is going bad, or would you say it's probably something other than the compressor?
I bet you have dual climate control?
If the AC can blow cold, it is likely not the issue, more likely a controls issue.
Lol low quality video my ass. Very well made. Thank you sir!
126k miles? Yup... My 07 yaris still works to this day. Gotta love toyota
126k is break in on most vehicles
Any help?
Please answer me this question is it normal for the AC compressor to kick on and off within 10 or 15 seconds?
i replaced my radiator, water pump and thermostat and with the system getting bled the ac still doesn’t run as cold as it should. i brought it to a local shop and they fixed the problem initially.
Your video has confirmed, my compressor is going out...
Any updates?
Couldn't that also be a sign that the accessory belt is bad and failing to properly rotate the accessory pulleys
suction line blowing out after two replacements. rubber hose with crimp on connectors.
How to tell if your AC compressor solenoid valve is bad?
This condition AC compressor able to self repair change small parts instead of change new compressor? Please advise..
Did you get the warranty extension from Honda on this issue. Ours was just received in the mail today. Covers 2016-2021 Civics and 2017-2022 CRVs. Original and / or subsequent owners. They will also reimburse for any repairs related to this as long as it meets the reimbursement requirements.
badass video thank you good sir
Fan probably not working
