Anyone aspiring to become a Drill Sergeant, even if reluctantly reporting to the Academy as a DA Select Candidate, needs to realize that like just about everything in the Army, it's about playing the game. Drill Sergeants are viewed as THE Standard Bearers, and the course followed by successful completion of a tour in BCT or OSUT is widely considered to be an unofficial part of NCOES. Notice how many senior NCOs sport the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge. Expect to be put on the spot... I graduated in 2016 and when I reported back to my unit, I was put in charge of an in ranks inspection by my 1SG. Not a big deal for most SSGs in a line company, but I was in a brigade HHC, meaning everyone from the COL and CSM to numerous MAJs and MSGs were watching my every move.
"Play the game", incidentally the motto of the 1/50th Infantry Regiment on Sand Hill (I was E/2-54). Report to the course looking and acting like the Drill Sergeant you'll soon become. I got my orders mid-2015 and was very much resigned to trying to make it to 20 years and retiring as an SSG. I'd wanted to go Drill back in 2008 and was DA Select for Recruiter duty instead, then had some health issues and put on a little weight while serving on staff. When my 1SG told me I was on orders, I was in disbelief. I had my "broadening assignment" and over eight years in grade with it seeming like my career had stalled out. Even so, I motivated myself and between exercise and dieting, I dropped from nearly 220 to 180 pounds before my report date. I swapped the by-then baggy size Large ACUs for Medium OCPs, got my first high-and-tight in years, and swallowed my pride.
Day one was admin in the morning with the Senior Drill Sergeant Leaders (DSL), then the "Shark Attack" by the DSLs themselves just before lunch. Some Candidates were singled out for wearing unserviceable uniforms or having barely in standards haircuts. "What is this, SGT?" "My field uniform, Drill SGT!" "Show me where AR 670-1 authorizes a field uniform!". I was the grey man, looking like a lean NCO with a brand-new uniform and traditional Army haircut, and the only attention I got was for my foot position at Parade Rest (I'd done four years in The Old Guard and had still been using their unique standing, facing, and marching movements until recently). My classmates insisted I looked like the statue in front of the schoolhouse, with some getting pictures of me next to it before graduation.
As for the swallowing your pride thing, remember that the DSLs are there to teach you how to become a Drill Sergeant. We had some Candidates that looked down on some DSLs due to their relative lack of experience. One DSL was an X-Ray tech who'd never been in charge of troops before donning the hat and badge. Another was an MP who'd joined the Army after I'd already pinned SSG. It doesn't matter, they earned their title, and you have to prove to them that you are worthy of the title of Drill Sergeant. I sat next to one of the humblest Candidates in my class. He was a fellow 11B who'd earned a Silver Star in Afghanistan with the 173rd.

Retired 1SG with 26yrs active duty. Drill sergeant, DSL, and Basic Training 1SG. You would always see the senior leadership with pumpkin patches. Now I’m not sure…
But I do remember the school was no joke. We were always studying the modules. Even during our break in between classes.
I was also DA selected. I didn’t play the game. SMH
Is that what you expect from your Soldiers to play the game when they are given a task!?

Be careful what you wish for. You might get it. I was initially denied to become a Drill Sergeant because of health reasons. I fought tooth and nail to become one. I wish I hadn't. Don't let that video fool you. It sucks being a Drill Sergeant. Worse is, the trainees are more poweful than you. Be prepared to walk on egg shells throughout your time as a Drill Sergeant.

According to the official website of the US Army you must be 17-35 years (a permission for the 17 years old is needed). You need the American citizenship or a permanent residence (green card) to join the US Army. After that you have to make medical test to make sure if you are suitable. And you must speak and write English fluently
