That feeling you have on the bus riding to basic is indescribable. It was dead silent. I remember when we pulled up and saw all the drills waiting for us, someone said “why did I do this” lol
I remember that day as well when I got to Ft. Leonardwood back in 97’.
So strange seeing women in ranks and on the bus ride to Basic. We were always separated except at church on Sundays. We only saw females' marching by. that was it.
Yep. I remember that bus ride at Midnight, dead tired!!
i rember the day at meps before the ride i was so nervous i literally didnt eat anything until our first breakfast in basic training and the bus rie yea dead silent was very eerie
The young lady on the cover for this video is my niece, Shomari who just graduated on October 19th, 2023 and I and our family was there at Fort Jackson in Columbia to support her. Good job Shomari have a wonderful military career 💕
Congrats to your niece!
Congrats, albeit a bit late!! Hope AIT is going great for her.

I am a disabled army veteran. But my biggest piece of advice for people going into basic training is go in already in shape. I did this and it helped greatly. Especially in the early parts of basic.
preparing psychologically wouldn't be a bad idea to, specially by the USMC. to not lose focus when the DIs testing you with their brutel mind games.
Im going to fat camp in a month in North Carolina before hitting BT
@@TAPATIOPLEASEI’ll be there for the asvab not the fat camp. How much you weighed? I’m 264 and still wanna lose some and I want to gain stamina and strengthen my bones.
As a Veterans myself I agree 1000% it better to go while they are in shape.
I remember shitting bricks that day, and the first night I was like wtf did I just do, now that I've reached 1 year in the army I'm loving it and never regretted it once, I'm stationed in Korea making friends and learning, traveling, stuff that I would never be doing if I never joined the army.
Also in Korea! 2-1 ADA
What MOS?
I'm curious, what's your MOS?
Laundry Specialist
ayeee thats wassup I also want to eventually be stationed in korea, I also know the language so I would probably have more fun and experience a lot there. Also thanks for your service!
If you ever decide to do this, push yourself in every way to make it through. This will be one of the most important decisions u make in your life. It won’t be easy but it’s doable. If others have done it, u can do it too. Victory starts here. #armystrong

This was day zero, June 27th, 2023. I was there. I even see myself in a few frames. Feels like it was just yesterday I stepped off the plane into that South Carolina heat. And now I'm here today. A soldier.
What was your battalion? I was 2-60th, graduated a month after you arrived July 27th‼️

Biggest tip for reception in basic training, watch out for the civilian workers. They are not gods or above you, if they are giving you bad gear/ non fitting uniforms. Politely make sure you go back and get the right stuff. especially when it comes to footwear. I kept telling the worker they didn’t fit and she said she has been doing it for years and knows what fits. 3 days later my feet were messed up from bad boots and had to go back to get good fitting ones. They also gave me the wrong size patrol cap and dress blues saying “ you’ll stay smaller in the Army” shockingly a 17 year old got larger and by 20 my dress uniform would not fit my legs or shoulders.
They issue dress blues now?
I MADE IT !!! I'm on week 9 BCT, it's worth it. Graduating November 2. Hooah!!!!
💪💪💪
Congratulations!! My delay will be over in November then the rest is history
@@goarmymy boy graduates in December from Ft Banning😊
LOL, and? it's easy. this new culture where kids need to feel entitled and privileged to everything is insane.
Basic wasn't that hard then. Stop acting like it is now.
How is it going now
You are embarking on a life changing event that will shape your future. Be proud of your decision. Those of us that have gone before you are so proud of you. America is proud of you
absolutely proud of every gen Z and alpha that joins and sees the bigger purpose because most of them are lost causes and we need as many of them to join as possible now with the recruiting issues

Congrats on anyone joining the military.
Don't worry, your friends will still be back home, smoking weed and doing nothing when you get out.
The #1 advice about getting through basic training that nobody ever talks about is sleep.
You are not used to being sleep deprived and you will face this in basic training. This is one of the biggest changes coming that you are NOT used to. You will have to get up at 3:00 in the morning to pull a 2 hours guard duty, or maybe you have to get up at 1:00 AM for a 2 hour guard duty. Then you have to get up at 5 am to start your day.
Many of the struggles in basic training that you will face are simply because you are tired as fuck.
What you want to do is get ALL teh sleep you can when you are afforded the time to do so.
It will serve you well.
Haha they were still doing that when I got back from deployment in 03 and I went to basic in 99. Went in the national guard till 07 came back in leave they were still broken.
Dont forget KP duty
I was nervous as hell back in 2007 but it was the best choice I ever made for myself. Good luck everyone who makes it through training. If you join now you are lucky you didn't join during a war. Lets keep it that way!
yea in 2010 my senior drill was like everyone of you will deploy within the first year of graduation from AIT an i went in in jan 10 and was in theatre june of 11 i got to my unit in september of 10 so 9 months after getting to my unit i was on my way to afghanistan. i was also part of the handful that got europe as a station i was supposed to go to italy and got rerouted in frankfurt due to needs of the army still had a blast but do wish i could have been airborne with the 173rd in italy
My son joined in January. He's honest that active duty isn't for him, but he appreciates the experience so far. I was active duty Navy for 14 years, and I would do it again. Know why you're joining and commit to it. Learn what you can. It can open your eyes to the world, and you can find out what you are made of.
Been there done that , make sure to our keep in touch when to get deploy. Always have alot of pen and paper, envelopes and stamps. They may no to be in front of any type of computers for weeks at a time. That's from experience. Don't depend on phone calls . Letters are always better and write on Sunday they will get them on Friday.
Is it compulsory I do active duty after basic training please respond if you still see comments!

Ft. Benning, 1986 here. I get it, things have changed, but the purpose to tear you down and rebuild you as a Soldier remains the same.
Trust me, its worth it.
As a knucklehead straight off the block from the Westside of Chicago, I don't know where'd I be today if it wasn't for the Army.
Shoulda been from the south side my guy. #istillcallitcomiskey lol
That’s good. I’m currently thinking about the national guard

Man I remember 120th like it was yesterday April 17th I arrived now im a soldier doing my job, keep going Guys!!, don’t give up it’ll be over soon
I never gave up. I’m really am an Army!! 💪💪
Boy the Army has really toned down then how I remember. February to May 2013 Fort Leonard Wood. Drill Sergeants we’re cursing, screaming and throwing all our gear across the parade deck. Times have certainly changed.
42 years later I'll never forget the bus ride from MEPs to the airport, the plane ride to N. Carolina, the army reception station and the bus ride from the reception station to the barracks.
Feb 22nd 2023, I will never forget the night when I arrived Ft Jackson airport. Now I am watching this on deployment and only one month away from home :)
Thank you for your service! 🔥💪🇺🇸
May I ask, what is your M.O.S.?

I was just at Fort Jackson last year, September through December. I made it all the way through training but suffered an injury. I’m in the recovery process and plan to be back in Spring 2025. Army strong for life
similar story to me althought it was early 2022 when i got out and im talking to a recruiter to try and get back in right now
my wife was in last year as well she also have severe leg injuries she still in recovery
I am 17 and I really want to join and serve the country. however, my parents are strongly against this. I hope that we can come to an agreement where I get to serve in the military soon.
Serve part time in the guard
Honestly man I would look around at a “non combat mos” and try to convince them that way, it honestly probably still won’t be easy but that’s how I convinced my parents now I’m enlisted and ship November 7th as a 14G.
Your parents may be scared but really your decision to serve or not has little to do with them. It is your decision whether or not to enlist not theirs. Every able bodied citizen has that right. The Army doesn't need people who are trying to rebel against nor please their parents. Its needs people of substance who are willing to develop themselves into leaders and go forward when the people of this nation call them to act. Good luck with your decision.
Wait to turn 18 if they keep trying to discourage you.

Just turned in my paperwork my ASVAB is in a week pretty excited even though this looks pretty soft compared to what I’ve been told about by friends in the military
Hey! How’s it going? Going for MEPS next week too.
No Where near.
No way near soft
They tone things down in front of a camera
This was a little bit more nicer when I went to basic back in 2013 as a 11B
They may have toned down a bit for the video
32 years ago, I made that journey. Left home for what was supposed to be 3 years but ended up staying in for 21 years. It wasn't perfect, but its still the best decision I ever made in my life. Best of luck Soldiers!

I graduated today and man this was taking back to memory lane
How long does it take to graduate?
Basic Training is the same length (10 weeks long) for Active Duty, Army Reserve, and the National Guard.
Apparently the person that made this video remembers basic totally different from when I actually went to basic training.. there was a lot more physical and yelling.. maybe it's because I went to fort Benning back in 2000.. lol.. we spent 5 hours after shark attack lifting our bags and putting them down untill by accident we put bags down the same way.. no instructions just yelling.. kml.. still did my 4 years.. army leads the way.. go army
Jackson really be relaxing now lol.
To my knowledge they got rid of the shark attack completely because they deemed it unnecessary
Well let’s see it’s 2023 and when you went in, it was 2000. So 23 years ago. Yes things have changed. You did 4 years. So yes things have changed. That’s like expecting high school to remain the same when you graduated lol
Mind you there was cameras around during this, it might be a little different when there aren't lol.
I mean yea shit changes lol
Whatever happened to 'I want to be an Airborne Ranger, I want to live a life of danger Drill Sergeant!'

Thank you for your service Shomari !
I nearly joined the Army right out of high school, but I did not. Honestly, I don't think I would have made it. I wasn't the kind of person that would have been receptive to a DI and I would likely have been in trouble and eventually kicked out. I didn't understand the point to any of it. Now that I'm older, I wish I would have had a DI in my life. I wonder how my life would have been different. I'm a successful adult, but I feel like something is missing. I never received the discipline I needed as a young adult and never learned to establish bonds and trust with other people. Not to mention the physical fitness aspect of it all. I watch these videos now and it makes sense. Unfortunately it is too late in life for me to gain what I should have had in my youth. I was in St. Robert, MO a few years back and encountered a young man in the Army. He was meeting his family and honestly, I was proud of him and I didn't even know him. He accomplished more in his first 20 years of life than I did in my first 40. It really makes you reflect on your life choices.
I'm currently in bct will be graduating in Jan 25. Reception was very scary for me due to being dropped off in the middle of the night. Stayed there a whole month due to the 09M program, lowkey miss the food and the sleep but yeah very disorganized when i was there which was August 28 2023. Just always follow instructions and be there on the right time and right uniform.
You are a 'soldier' from the day you take the oath.
Basic gets to the point of TRAINED soldier, if only just.
AIT and about two years on active duty doing your job makes you a RELIABLE trained soldier.
And you won't be trusted to operate a tool box by yourself until you're an E4 anyway 😁
To all of you who are new to the Siblinghood of the Bayonet, please accept the respects and regards from an cavalryman old enough to be your father and/or grandfather. A respectful tip of the Stetson to you and my sincere hopes that you do well in your Army career and get what you want from it.

I'm in Civil Air Patrol and just got back from the SCWG CTW at Fort Jackson so seeing it again with even more basic trainers is really awesome
Semper Vigilans!
Wow, many things have changed. 1989 at Ft. Knox was a lot more yelling with many expletives, and many stressful days. Drill Sgt's were a lot more "hands on", so to speak. I hope this new approach with recruits will turn out quality troops. Time will tell.
When I was in the Army. I said YES SIR. Army has changed since I went in
I always wanted to join the army when I was younger, but due to being deaf in my left ear, I was not given the opportunity. I ended up being a firefighter/ EMT. Many years later, I received a back injury from fighting a house fire. Now that I can't fight fire any more, I've been volunteering my time with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Tallahassee, Florida, at Post 3308.
That's amazing. Nevertheless, thank you for your service!
Drill Sergeant is a tough job. A lot of respect for them.
I remember DS Skippier from my arrival. I think it was around 2 am almost a year ago when I got there so, I might of been really tired or he was a funny guy. This is a nice flashback and I hope all the future soldiers find the reselience to pass BCT. I was in there shoes a year ago and now after a year of training I am currently packing my apartment to move to my first duty station. It goes by quick!

As a Naval Veteran who was in from 2001-2006 I garuntee you that most veterans who were in around the same time feel that the military got exactly what they deserved.....Most of us loved our country & wanted to continue to serve it, but got pushed out 1st enlistment due to something called higher tenior that basically meant unless you were a perfect sailor your first enlistment we don't want you.
3rd position is the front leaning rest
Day 1 was terrible. Bout 256 of us, the first day no one slept the night prior. We were stuck in atlanta for HOURS. The flight to columbia was a terrifying one as we flew upside down and got there in 10 minutes. It was supposed to be a 35 minute flight. Next thing you know, you spend the whole early morning signinf paper and getting stuff. Phones taken up and pt uniforms issued. This is day 1 of reception. It wasn't terrible i lied. But the official day 1. Was red phase. Day 1 of red phase you got waken up and gathered in the entrance of the dfac of 3-60 inf bn. This is your first smoking. Don't worry. It's not all bad but it's hard. Push through and you'll be ok

yeah pretty sure its nothing but veterans in this comment section, I remember it too along side all the comments, getting through basic, then AIT was hard, but the reward you get from finally getting through it to your first unit is indescribable. I am also extremely thankful for the senior drill that i had when i went through DS Golden made me a man on his own with the help of the training i wouldnt be here if it wasnt for him and his in depth training because i definitely used my train more than a few times in afghanistan.

26 is young
26 isn't old. But you are older. If possible I'd recommend going air force if you are older because not only is the army the most physically difficult next to the marines,
But the army will also treat you the most like a little child.
So I'm not telling you not to join the army, but I'm suggesting to give the air force a look. By the way I joined the army older myself.
