I went here about 3 years ago and it was so awesome to finally go since I’ve grown up looking at it from a far my whole life. Sad I didn’t get to see it one last time before they demolished it but at least I saw it once. Great video!! Glad you gave it the respect it deserves before it was gone!

All the mold in that place would scare me, I would rather sleep in a tent on a balcony somewhere, what a shame a hurricane ruined it. You are brave.

Yeah I think I'm going to start carrying around a mask on these adventures, just in case! 😷
Mold is generally not a problem at all unless you ingest it, some people are more sensitive to the smell than others though, it will however destroy a house in no time
Having grown up not far from there, you do put cereal in the fridge. Same with bread. It's the only way to keep it from going soggy in a matter of days, if not hours after opening it. When you live that close to the water, humidity is a way of life.
Interesting, I learned something new!! I lived on the beach for years but we just used food clips 🤷♂️
I've heard of people in Florida putting underwear in the refrigerator to keep mold and mildew from forming.

The taxing authority has plagued this home with back property taxes. The back property taxes are over two and a half million dollars. No one wants it because of this fact. If it weren't for the back property taxes someone could have afforded to buy and fix it up.

That’s a birdhouse now. They’re very protective of it, shouting: “Out, out, out”. Sad it’s about to be ripped down, hope the baby birds will be safe.
From what I hear it's standard procedure in the demolition industry to do a check beforehand and relocate animals... let's hope they did their job!

When I was a kid in the early and mid 1980’s me and my friends broke into many abandoned buildings, old hotels, barns, plane hanger, and an old saw mill.

Spent summers just in Ocean Beach looking at that and driving my boat past it in the 60's and 70's. still see it often and live just north of it. Never seen the inside though , Thanks. When the wind is off the ocean it is fine but a west wind brings Green Head Flies that bite hard and Mosquitoes by the bushel.
So cool! Glad you were able to appreciate it as a local. I guess I came through at the right time then. I only saw maybe 2 mosquitoes the whole time and no horseflies, thankfully!

I like to speak aloud and thank a camping spot. After gratitude I'll compliment and wish it well. The spot seems to find a life after someone stays there for a night. It becomes a friend. It helped and accepted me and I try to keep it clean.

It's always fun to explore abandoned places. You never know what you'll find in the process. Nice that island mansion had one last visitor before it's demolition & removal.

Some one with a lot of money will end up getting that property and rebuild and the cycle will all start over again. But this time things might turn out for the better good luck all for the next adventure 😅

i'm amazed that they'd be allowed to knock it down with birds nesting in it at the time.
You are actually correct! The Migratory Bird Act is a federal law that prohibits disturbing nesting areas during mating season and there are eggs or fledglings. I hope somebody ensures the birds aren't displaced and they follow the law and wait until they all have fledged.
Apparently they are supposed to relocate any animals before demolition. I sure hope they followed the protocol!

As a former urbanex person idk if you've mentioned it before but man you should really wear a n95 or n100 respirator when sleeping in places like these. The amount of asbestos is INSANE and I'd hate to see ya suffer from exposure years down the line!
glad you said something as soon as i seen he was going into a house especially with animals living in it, poop and mold on top of asbestos lol, i was about to comment the same thing
Very true! Thankfully this one was constructed in the 90s, so no asbestos. But definitely plenty of bird poop and mold, that's for sure!!

Was kayaking in Barnegat Bay last month. I feel bad for the baby seagull who was no doubt crushed under debris the following morning. Still, awesome location and a shame that Sandy destroyed so many houses. Also, when you said you wanted to leave early so you didn't run into the construction crew, I thought to myself, "Don't you mean DESTRUCTION crew?" 😁
Good video. All those seagulls (rats of the sea) would drive me crazy.

I got shipwrecked on that island in the early 80's when the house was smaller. I was sailing a cheap, styrofoam sailboat between Middle Sedge and Marsh Elder Islands in winds dar too strong for the boat and the mast snapped. Had to walk barefoot through the reeds to reach the house and ask for a boat ride home.
Wow, what a interesting (and unfortunate) story! Glad you were okay. How did your interactions with the resident(s) go? Were they friendly? Did you exchange any stories?
@@WesWherever 40 years ago, so hard to remember details. My main fear was that they might have big dogs for security. That and the pain of walking across pointy, broken reeds. In the end they gave me a ride with no complaints.

Yea, you don't know what you're doing, the idea is to get there right at first light, that way you have the entire day to explore, without giving yourself away with a light, that way you can learn all about the layout before it gets dark, and you go to bed right when it gets dark, that way you'll have over 8 hours sleep.
@armybeef68 I learned this very same afternoon that it was going to be demolished the next morning. So I scrambled to pack up and then drove hours getting there as early as I could. If I could’ve gotten there earlier, of course I would have. Do you know the saying about assuming?

That mosquito magnet company still makes them! I believe it hooks up to a bottle of propane. It works unbelievably well! Too bad it costs so much though...
To have a house like that, it needs to be built like a bunker. Steel reinforced concrete outer walls. And heavy bullet proof windows. Otherwise this is what a hurricane is eventually going to do to the place.

I do not think it is actually abandoned - it obviously was abandoned but as there are or were plans to demolish it is no longer abandoned.
What will the island be used for once it is cleaned up?

You should camp at one of the islands by the Grand Haven drawbridge in Michigan. Growing up I've always seen them but never went there. Or you could go to Dune Harbor Park in Muskegon and spend the night on the man made island there. Please pin this comment. :)

@@WesWherever I've actually swam to the island. Also by one of the lakes there used to be an abandoned dredger. Me and some friends had climbed into the dredger and played some cards at a table someone had set up inside the dredger. Sadly the dredger is gone now.

It looks like vandals did a number on the place. When they raze it, the poor birds and going to be displaced (temporarily I hope). I hit on your videos by accident; glad I did! The little island in the East River in NYC where you camped out overnight was fascinating to me.
