      Curious to watch. I am from Milan, living in NYC for 2 decades. NYC seems to be going down the drain slowly. One step up, 2 back. Anyway, I enjoy your videos, I wonder why you do not shoot in linear mode with your camera (I assume a GoPro or similar), it would make them more appealing esthetically, without the fisheye effect.

    As an Italian, I have to say that their statements about taxes are quite exagerated and incorrect. Of course taxes are high, and citizens could and should get back a lot more of what they do, in terms of services. Of course we have a lot of corruption and bad spending of public money. But when they say we get NOTHING in return, that is incorrect and very populist. For starters, we get a good public and free school system, affordable and good universities, a good and cheap healthcare. They don't get any of those in the US. Also, they don't mention the appalling rate of tax fraud, which is a big factor in this. The problem is not just high taxes, it's mainly bad spending and tax fraud.
    I think these things should be mentioned, if you want to show a balanced picture.
    On the other hand, when the guy says the current mood in Italy is "depressed", I think he's absolutely spot-on.

    I was just in Rome in December, (2023) and stayed about 3 blocks up from Termini Station. Yes, I saw some homeless people. But, after a day of wandering around, and coming and going, day and night, I felt safe. No problems whatsoever. Of course, I wouldn't go through that underpass at night, or wander down streets that weren't busy. I kept hearing all the 'be careful in Rome' comments, but it's not the case. Loved Rome. I also went to that food court shown in the station. Worth a visit. Great food. When you travel, travel savvy. I returned from a visit south to Rome to catch my flight. I gave my Trenitalia lunch box to a homeless person who really appreciated it.

For instance where I live people who recently moved here have to be told, "Don't just go up driveways expecting to get halloween candy. As an expat living in Rome for nearly 10 years, Rome has a love it/hate it/love it again vibe to it. Cicalone, as an Italian, complains about the way things are, but the rate of crime in Rome and in general, Italy, is very low. Nobody denies the fact that there is petty theft everywhere near the tourist areas, but there's nothing more dangerous than that. Criminals know that the punishment for armed robbery or worse is high, so you may be tricked out of your money, but not mugged. I’ve been to Rome three times for different occasions. Last time was four years ago. I felt absolutely safe. No issues. I even walked with my wife and kids around midnight to Saint Peters and back to our apartment. It was a good mile and a half walk. There are a lot of pickpocketers; but that is not a big deal if you are not showing up your stuff or have money on you.

    I would like to clarify some aspects of the "Italian thoughts" mentioned in the video. They said that in Italy people pay up to 48%, and that's true, some in certain ways even more than that if we consider other kinds of taxations. The thing is that in Italy we have "free" healthcare, public school system up to high school and tax reduction for university students with low family income (you pay regional taxes, like 100€ per year, and in some cases that's it), and many services that in many other countries are private. The biggest problem is not taxation, but tax evasion, there are many that do not pay taxes and that added to the poor investment management that our political system had made in years, it has increased the number of taxes required but not the benefits received from them. Another aspect that was mentioned in the video was about pensions, most of elderly can't live with their pension, that is based on many reasons, but one that I would like to highlight is that young generations have problems in finding jobs, creating new opportunities, or get small jobs just to live, in the last few years there were more young people living with elders' pension rather than the opposite.

    •  10 месяцев назад +4

      The bureaucracy is extremely bloated, public services rarely work as they should (as is the norm in the world, anyways), it's hard to start a business, the pension system is unsustainable. The problems in Italy are mostly the same as any European country nowadays, from Romania to Sweden. I personally think a little bit less gov. intervention would be welcome, however I don't - currently - live in Italy, so my opinion may not be "up to date".

    We were in Rome in summer 2019. Felt safe the whole time. We were warned to watch out for the typical pick pocket crimes or the typical tourist street scams but nothing regarding physical harm because there isn't any. It looked like the Italian guys were looking for crime that wasn't there, in other words, overstating the crime. In the summer the tourist to criminal ratio is likely 1000 to 1, or even higher. Any city on the world where the ratio is 1000 to 1 I would feel safe.

      And to think the population of Chicago as a whole only has 2.697m compared to Romes 2.8m.

    • @bdkamil95
      @bdkamil95 Год назад +5

      @@shortshorts920 you cannot look at it that way. You have to compare them by metropolitan area population and not the city itself. Otherwise you can get some weird results. Rome metropolitan area has more than 4 million people. Chicago’s close to 10.
      Same story with Toronto or Paris. On paper Toronto has something like 2 million people in the city. But it doesn’t make sense to look at it that way. Paris? Only 2m residents in the city but it’s urban area has 13m. And now let’s compare it to let’s say Warsaw. Warsaw has close to 2 m people in the city. You could get an impression that it’s similar to Paris or Toronto, right? All of them have similar city population. Wrong. You see Paris is on a totally different level. With its 13m metro population it’s 4 times larger than Warsaw.

I had planned to see some of Rome's back streets while there, but this was a bit of a shock. Refreshing reality makes the video so entertaining. Now I know my trip will be even better if Cicalone is my personal tour guide. Thanks you and the two C's!

    I was in Rome and Naples this past summer and I felt 100% safe there. Im from modesto / Stockton California and I'll be the first to tell you our cities are much more dangerous. In Rome you worrie about theft, pick pockets. In my city you worrie about being killed! Rome actually reminded me a lot of Oakland and San Francisco but without the ghetto street element if that makes sense.

    I was in Rome and Vatican City a week ago and enjoyed my time there especially the magnificent marble statues, art, beautiful churches, architecture and ancient history. Thank you so much for highlighting the fact that there are 2 sides to Rome of which I noticed on arrival at Termini. What stood out for me was the graffiti on many of the buildings close and surrounding the station. Then if you walk a few meters towards the tourist attractions, you think you are in a completely different city. I think many of the big cities in Europe, even London struggle with a lot of homelessness and perhaps it’s a wake up call for the governments to do more for their people especially when tourism is a major contributor to the economy.

      @@IamPINKIEDaniels There's not shootings every day, lmao. The US has a handful of cities where violence is like that, and only PARTS of the cities have such violence. United Nations statistics actually show that EUROPE is MORE dangerous then the US in terms of violence. Yes, the US has more gun crime, but Europe has more violence overall and you have a greater chance of being violently mugged in Europe then in the US. These are FACTS, based on data from experts all over the world, so they aren't biased. Your country literally has a super small population in comparison and a much different situation, so it's not like you're somehow superior

    I stayed in this place on my Italian holiday, walked there during day and night. Yes, there are homeless people there and sometimes you can see drug addicts at night. But it's not more critical, messy or dangerous than it is in other European capitals and big cities these days. The big advantage of the area is that you can take a train and go wherever you want in Rome or the rest of the country (including the airport). Plus, there are many nice restaurants which are always crowded at night which proves that the neighborhood is quite tourist-friendly.
