At the end of an empire, the money that would be spent on the citizens must be spent on the protection of the empire. The multiple overseas wars happening now are sucking up money. The amount of federal employees does nothing for the GDP. Romney lost his election bid because during his time he wanted to take away government assistance. You that, at that time, 51% of americans needed federal assistance. To many weak dumb people in our society. To may people grew up in the educational system that left know child behind. How do you have the best citizens when the teachers union lobbied congress to make their jobs easier? I have paid attention to my world since 10 years old, since the first desert storm and where I found my role model, general Colon Powell.

We are taught from out very childhood to make a name in the world, to become famous, well-known, successful, a prime minister or a president, a Nobel prize winner - but somebody special, somebody. Every child is poisoned with the idea of being somebody, and the reality is we are all nobodies. And the reality is tremendously beautiful! Just being nobody brings such joy and ecstasy that one cannot even imagine it. Fame brings nothing. It is a very stupid game, very childish and immature.
My definition of real achievement is that which cannot be taken away by death. Anything that can be taken away by death is not a real achievement but only a pseudo achievement, toys to play with.
Become a nobody from this moment and enjoy the freedom that it brings. Become anonymous and see the joy! There is no worry, no anxiety. Because there is no ego you don't feel hurt. Nothing can hurt you. Somebody can insult you and you can stand there watching and enjoying it because there is nobody inside you to feel hurt, there is nobody to be wounded. You can enjoy and laugh.
The day a man can enjoy and laugh while he is being insulted he has already attained something, he has become part of eternity. He has entered into the world of the immortals.
      Osho

I’ve lived in DC since 1965, live in PG County now and have spent a lot of time in Anacostia. Anacostia is a dangerous food desert that is very hard to get out of. Education and good jobs (e.g. government) are ways that people have moved up in this area. I think having a guide that’s not blind from living here for a long time gives a perspective that locals can’t see. Democrats are happy as long supporting the poor as long as they vote for them and stay in their neighborhoods. Try putting low income housing in an affluent DC neighborhood - NIMBY activists will fight hard against it but donate to programs to keep the poor in SE DC.

I came from Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world, at the age of 19. Raised by a single mother who was herself struggling economically. I arrived in Washington, D.C., as a foreign student at the University of the District of Columbia, one of the historically black universities. To afford the international tuition, which was three times higher than the resident tuition, I worked tirelessly at Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street until I graduated with my bachelor's degree. Subsequently, I earned a scholarship for my master's and then for my PhD, which allowed me to travel the world.
I came to the United States with nothing, but now I have everything I could want. America is truly the land of opportunity. For those who cannot succeed here, it often comes down to a lack of ethics and ambition, which are deeply rooted in one's cultural background and the values instilled by parents from an early age. The greatest wealth in America lies in the values and drive that individuals possess. There is no excuse whatsoever!

I think it's interesting to see and hear about all perspectives, native and non-native alike. Be patient. People did the same to him when he covered Chicago (my hometown). But by the time he was done with the series, he really rounded it out with several perspectives. There's still lots of value listening to what others have to say - and fascinating what others consider areas that Peter must see or stories and experiences that must be told.

As a DC native for the last 60+ years, I have seen "the hood" basically disappear over the past six decades. Places like Dupont Circle went from needle park in the 1960s to too expensive to afford in less than 20-years. Anacostia is 100x better than it was in the 1970s. The gentrification of DC proper is almost complete. All the people and issues that WERE in DC now have migrated to PG county, Maryland and elsewhere.
Your "tour guide" did not reveal to you the true DC. He took you to a "fake hood", one emptied of young minority men who created it in the first place. You saw only old people and crazy people living in post-gentrified SE and SW DC. The child care center you passed is not affordable for 99% of the people who need it. The reason most grocery stores are not in SE or SW is because they soon become theft centers and adult day care for what is left of the poor population.
Anacostia is not an "issue" for anyone except your host. Everyone who had a sound mind or body is out of there and happily living somewhere else. Developers need to finish the job they started in the 1980s and clean it up, move it out, and get on with enjoying life in the new DC --which, by the way, is 1000% better than DC ever was in the last 60 years.
You just can't get an accurate picture of DC unless your tour guide actually understands the dynamics over the past decades that have formed 2024 DC. This guy has no clue.

When she was young, it wasn't a "rich" neighborhood but it was lots of middle/upper middle class families. She ended up moving away to college in the 60s and then in the 80s after my parents split, she moved back here with me and my brother, but to Maryland because it was more affordable. So I've lived in the area since then. DC definitely has improved a lot - I remember it being called the murder capital of the country in the 80s. But you're right - so much of the crime has moved out to the suburbs.

Jim Crow is the only history he knows I guess. He has no idea what he's talking about. Especially when he talks about Georgetown and L'Enfant-he is objectively wrong on the history there. Georgetown was a separate city from the rest of the DC from before L'Enfant was born until almost 50 years after he died! L'Enfant had nothing to do with it being secluded.

I found it very hard to listen to a person who originally came from India talking about racism and solving "class" solutions. Perhaps this gentleman should look to his own counrty to help solve their horrendous "Caste" class system still in effect that has "untouchables" "secheduled castes" that are considered outcasts and belong to no social order. It would have been much better I feel to speak to someone who fully understands the issues of the city because they were born and raised there and have experienced all sides and facets of their city. I found this man very arrogant and frankly he said it himself, at 25:14 "I don't know what it's like to be them." as he pointed towards Anacostia.

I have lived here in DC since 1979 and moved to the area soon after college was completed. The food desert areas had major grocery chains like Safeway and the local chain, Giant. They had to leave SE when the thefts became too much to sustain their businesses. That is also why none are enthusiastically going back. It is a terrible thing when people and businesses are afraid to go into an area of town due to its bad reputation. This happens in cities all over America. They go where the money is and unfortunately, lately, the crime has followed. Peter, you really should have spoken with a person who was born in DC and has lived here a long time. Many points were missed.

Like others mentioned DC is an extremely diverse community. I think with this in mind it might have been a good idea to have multiple people be tour guides. There are so many different topics to broach. I think a really interesting one, for example, would be what I would phrase as ‘suburban sprawl’. A lot of immigrants that got their start with businesses in DC really started to move out of the city during the 70s and 80s at the height of some of its worst crime. So now you have these pockets of micro cities in the Suburbs such as Chinese in Rockville and Ethiopians in Silver Spring. Talking to some of the older generation that lived in DC and moved to these would be a really good idea.

I am an Indian living in India. Yet we dont keep running around crying wolf every racist incident and try and destroy the very fabric of existence here. Our income levels are far below what US has. Yet the level of deliquency is far less. We dont have people shooting drugs on the streets. We have ghettos too, some of the largest in the world. But we dont have so much street crime. We currently have a government led by a Party who is using communalist "caste " related politics. Yet in the latest elections, they voted that party down.
We have a similar history as Israel and Gaza. Yet we dont run around bombing each other out to oblivion. We have big divides between the rich and poor. Yet we dont get into "class" struggle. We experimented with socialism and found it lacking especially in the visionary department. It just simply dont cut to keep giving freebies to the not so deserving. That gives no incentive for self betterment. And it pulls the rest of us down.
By no means our country is a paradise. There is a real poverty here. We have corruption and nepotism. We have social issues too, like treatment of women and rape.
But that doesnt mean that we go around looting stores and public property, exhibit general lawlessness and look down on our own cultural ancestory. Being real doesnt mean being stupid and destroying what was built. That is sitting on the edge of the a branch and cutting on it too!

Bridges streets are all collapsed. My grandmother used to always tell us that the British were there to save us from ourselves.
