    I went to visit a friend in Miami, Florida from Los Angeles for the first time for 10 days and we spent most of those times in the city and South Beach etc... I took 3 days to myself (cuz no one wanted to join me) to go visit the Everglades National Park to experience the typical tourist swamp/gator tour.... and it turned out to be the best part of my trip. At one point on the airboat tour the captain stopped the vehicle in the middle of the Everglades and told everyone to stay silent... completely silent...... we sat there in the middle of this amazing beautiful landscape, the blue sky wide open, puffy white clouds floating, soft water currents below us... it was one of the most beautiful, magical and spiritual 15 minutes of my life.... no one made a sound... the power and beauty of the Everglades had all of us in a beautiful trance. I will never forget it. Thank you for this episode!

      I did that in my boat with the girlfriend and future in-laws with me. They found it odd that they had to get out of a 22-foot boat with a 400 horsepower engine and help push it into water😂. We got her into water, and there was no damage to my prop, and I reverse throttled the Volvo Penta outdrive, and we were out all day having fun. Took her right in for her impeller change and outdrive calibration to the props. Everything was good thank God!

      I live 25 miles away and boat in the backwaters. We have waterways where you go for miles and it is not more than 3 feet deep and it gets shallower in many parts to a foot deep. Striking sand is a pretty common occurrence. It is not like in Connecticut where water gets deep quickly. Enjoyed the video and love visiting this area.

    My uncle, Edward (Eddie) Kassman, is hugely responsible for the preservation of the Everglades National Park. He's been working for the park service for over 30 years and spent over 15 years writing the legal protections for the park. His bill passed through Congress under Obama (I think). He still works for the Park Service out of CO. He earned a law degree to protect our environment and parks. Would go down to Chokoloskee to Leebos bar and raise hell now and again, sit on the seawall at the Smallwood store and drink beer and shoot the shit, and hit up the breakfast buffet at The Depot restaurant when we was hungover. Crazy to see Peter there! Especially since I know that not a lot goes on here most of the year except the seafood fest. The other 51 weeks we sat outside Circle K smoking cigarettes gossiping bout stone crabs, fishing, airboats and whatnot. I love & cherish all the memories I made from 20 yrs ago.....

    At 8:30, the round broken structure next to the water cistern at Watson's homestead was used for boiling sugar cane juice into cane syrup and cane sugar. Watson, like most of the settlers in the area, grew sugar cane to make his own sugar/syrup. Anyone who wants to learn first-hand about growing up in this area, check out a book by Rob Storter called Crackers in the Glade: Life and Times in the Old Everglades. He was an old-time fisherman and pioneer.

I wanted to talk about Totch this day, but I could go on for hours, so thought it might be better as a separate video which I'll have soon on my own channel!
      I skimmed through Rob Storter's book years ago but need to reread it. I guess I just always kept rereading and studying Totch, haha.

    • @floridabeachhunter
      @floridabeachhunter 3 месяца назад

      @@HarryCane305 No doubt some of these homesteads had a still for making liquor, but in my understanding cane juice is not boiled down to make liquor. The fresh cane juice is put in a barrel with yeast to ferment. Then it is distilled. The sugar cauldron in the video would be for making syrup or sugar. Sugar cane juice itself is quite refreshing on a hot day!

    I got stationed in FL in 2007 at NAS Jax in NE Fl. I lived south of Jax in the small community of Middleburg near Black Creek and the St Johns River. I immediately fell in love with FL. I Retired from the Marine Corps in 2012 and went to work for the FL Park Service at Gold Head Branch State Park for 1 year. I learned so much about the history of FL. After that year I went to work for the Florida Forest Service and worked up near the FL Ga line which is the St Mary's River, near Hilliard in Nassau County. Then transferred a bit south to Duval County in late 2014 to Cary State Forest. But worked at the old Naval Air Station Cecil Field. which was a bit ironic because I went to school there in in 1993 for the Marine Corps and 20 yrs later I was back. Kind of full circle. I transferred again to Clay County in 2016 to Jennings State Forest. I had every intention to stay in FL the rest of my life. I ended up getting a really good job offer back home in Ohio and have been here since 2017. I love and miss FL. I spent much of my time on the water near St Augustine, Jacksonville, Horseshoe Beach (on the gulf side) and all up and down the St Johns River, black Creek, Julington Creek, Dunn's Creek, Sisters Creek, The intracoastal between Jax and St Augustine. And did a bunch of exploring up on the St Mary's River, and canoeing on the Suwannee River... You can take the boy our of FL but you cant take FL out of the Boy. I wasn't born there but I fit, in and felt like it was home. And still do. So many people think of spring break, Daytona, Miami, etc when they think of FL. I think of water, forest, swamps, rivers, and Cowboys.

      Ok, I would kindly suggest that from my point of view, I doubt there will be a deluge of humanity rushing to live out in the Everglades. It's a National Park. It's a zillion miles away from the comfort of most our homes. It has an endless display of bugs and other unwanted creatures. And it's in hurricane country. So, no matter where you are from, you might not consider this to be paradise. For those people who have the fortitude to live there, I admire you. It's a rare place that boggles the mind. I can only imagine the night sky. For you, you have a special spot that can never be duplicated. I'm thankful you have found the world where you belong. Not many can say that. Love this so much. I've lived in South Florida for about 45 years and though I hate that it's become so overdeveloped in so many areas, I still love Florida and its history. People think that we don't have history but we do. I remember first going down to the Keys and Key West in the 1970s and it was still like a frontier town. The tourists had not yet come in droves and the cruise ships had not yet started docking there and it was truly paradise. Waking up in the morning in Key West hearing roosters crowing is my idea of heaven. You are so right Peter about preconceived notions, because the minute I saw your tour guide before he even spoke, I thought "oh there's an old Florida cracker" lol, and how wrong I was. His vocabulary and speaking manner puts me to shame. Look forward to your further adventures in Florida hopefully.

    Very cool to see you get the info first hand from the Everglades city and Choko locals. I'm a fishing guide out of everyglades city and it's truly a special place! Not many places left that are still as untouched as Everglades city. great video!!!!

    Correction! They were eating cooked stone crabs. Like many crabs they have to be cooked immediately and then can be frozen or kept chilled after that. Stone crab is served cold like shrimp cocktail.

    Just went home to Ireland and was at a 10th century castle related to my family, I asked the historian about trade with Spain and we ended up talking about America because I live in Nevada now, anyway he started talking about how Columbus came to Galway to seek St Brendan's book, which talked about his travels to America and he met to strange men who Galway people said we're from the Americas, the historian believes these two men were native American and had sailed east and discovered Ireland, he said he wanted to research the possible longer connections between Galway and the native American communities in Florida

    Harrison of the Everglades, that was a phenomenal tour. And Peter, I can so feel the urge to swat those mosquitos out there but still having to hold up the camera and keep it rolling. You are a true trooper 💯
