- Опубликовано: 8 дек 2022
- NOTE *** at 07:15 supgefxctl is no longer a dependency of asusctl and must be installed on its own. I am updating the "Install the Asus-linux utility" section to reflect that.
In this video I am going to walk you through getting linux (Fedora 37) installed on your Asus ROG laptop. We are going to leverage tools from the asus-linux.org project to allow for better control of the laptops RGB, GPU and Fan speed.
Commands
Disable WiFi Power saving mode
sudo vi /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/wifi-powersave-off.conf
File contents are:
[connection]
wifi.powersave = 2

Many thanks for this excellent review, Sol. Your review couldn't have come at a better time [for me]! I have been looking for a laptop to replace my aging 2014 Macbook Pro [on which I am running Ubuntu 22.10]. I prefer to get a gaming laptop to be able to upgrade the RAM and SSD, and also to experiment with using the GPU to run computational tasks. I was at Staples tonight, where I came across and liked the ROG G15 laptop, but was totally unsure whether it would be supported by any Linux distribution. And then I found your excellent video 🙂
Thanks again, and well-done!
That is most excellent! I am glad my video was able to assure you how well this laptop would run Linux. Congratulations on the purchase and I am sure you would enjoy it 🙂
@@SolDoesTech That is kind of you to say, and your review was much more than helpful. I especially like how you listed the post-installation settings. I will pick the computer at the store tomorrow, and can't wait to enjoy running Linux on it.
Thanks again 🙂
thanks for the informative video mate! its gonna come very useful for me in the future when i eventually switch to linux.
especially considering we got the same laptop
Glad to be of service :) thank you for watching!
Thanks a lot, great video.
There seems to be a typo in one of the commands in the description though.
sudo systemctl start supgerfxd
which outputs:
"Failed to start supgerfxd.service: Unit supgerfxd.service not found."
One need to change supgerfxd to supergfxd:
sudo systemctl start supergfxd
Then it will work
Hello and thank you for catching that! much appreciated! I updated the description and fixed the typo. Thanks again and thank you for watching :)
You are my hero dude
How is the external monitor support? I face a lot of issues/glitches performance degradation when connecting external monitor.
Loved video thanks!
Sol Does Techi have a question can you do the same step in linuxmint? i was thinking about buying a Zephyrus G14 at best buy they have alot of sales now would this work the same way? and oh thanks for the video
Does this work for the wifi adapter card MediaTek WIFI MT7922? Is there any place I can look to double check? Other version of linux are not compatible
Yo is there a way to manage smartshift power profile on the asussystemctl you showed in the video?
Nice to see the asusctl, ROG control center etc., working, but you might point out that they only support Fedora and OpenSuse (rpm distros) not any Debian derivatives like Ubuntu, Mint, Pop, MX, etc. It's apparently in Arch's AUR, too.
Hello and thanks for the feedback. you're right, I had lots of comments asking about Ubuntu and pop-os, I should have made it more clear in the video. Thanks for the comment and thank you for watching!
Doesn't work on my asus gl553v, no keyboard core and fan curves, only system settings/
Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
Thank you, dude. What about sleep mode? Does it work out of the box?
Hi, will work all of this also for G14 / 2024 with KDE Neon distro ?
God bless. I dont have to break my head
Bro!
This is exactly what I wanted to see. So over Windows but didn't want to lose the functionality of the RGB, etc.
Perhaps you covered it in the video and I just missed it, but is there any functionality of the native MyAsus app, that ships with the machine on Windows, that you lose with the Linux version of Asus/ROG software?
Front panel streo not workin on bazzite fedora 40
is there something like that for Lenovo legion? pls if you know reply in this comment.
Pregunta esto igual funciona con las tuf gaming es que si lo necesito
Does it perform better, or does it get noisy so easily as it does on windows?
Linux boot drive crashes halfway into starting without ever letting me use it, how do I fix that?
Thank you so much for this video!
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching!
@@SolDoesTech in fact it pushed me over the edge to buy one on Friday 🤪 Ubuntu 22.04 running pretty well with some tweaks
@@andrewbrady8564 sweet! congratulations on your purchase I am sure you would enjoy it! :)
Would this work with nobara distro?, I've got an advantage edition g15
I set my key bindings up exactly the same lol. I guess everyone has the same idea in mind for these keys. I am using endeavour os though so a slightly different process to set up.
Very nice! I also have it running on Arch with on KDE and I enjoy that setup very much.
How to install nvidia drivers in fedora
Thank you for the video; it'll help me a lot. I just ordered an Asus Tuf F15 (i7 12700H - RTX 4060 ). Do you think asusctl works on it? I'm asking because 4060 is new.
The other thing is that I'm thinking of trying Nobara. Does asusctl work on Nobara too? At first, I thought it must, as Nobara is Fedora-based, but then I read some instructions on Asus-linux website about not having other gpu management apps, so I doubted that it may not work on Nobara. What do you think?
Hello and thank you for the questions. You are definitely doing your homework and checking the correct resources. I am not sure if you would run into issues with Nobara over the vanilla Fedora but my guess is that you would need a custom Kernel since of how new the laptop is so you may want to stick with Fedora. Another way to avoid the custom kernel is to look at installing Arch. But that all depends on how comfortable you feel with bleeding edge distro.
@@SolDoesTech Thank you for the info. I tried both Nobara and Fedora and with both of them the problem is that Asusctl doesn't show my keyboard so I cannot control rgb keyboard. Other things look fine. I tried some games and they run smoothly. I'll try some more demanding ones and start doing my 3D works to see if everything's fine. Any suggestions for RGB keyboard?
@@aldanesh2680 For wired external keyboard I would recommend the Logitech Pro line (www.logitechg.com/en-us/products/gaming-keyboards/pro-mechanical-gaming-keyboard.html) you can use OpenRGB to control the keyboard. with that said, you may want to look at OpenRGB to see if it would allow you to control the RGB on your laptop.
I have install linux on my rog g513ic but not have any driver for wireless. Addition, I have some problem when using keyboard on laptop, it stuck and black screen when I try to type 1 or some characters
Hi there, thank you for your comment. If you followed the install steps of Fedora 37 in my video then it's possible the wifi card in your laptop is not supported by the Linux Kernel. I have another video here showing how to replace some of the internal components ruclips.net/video/x-KkK2MgLNE/видео.html best of luck!
I'm already using Fedora in the form of Nobara, can I install everything related to asus own linux support and use Nobara or that will be included in Nobara itself ?, can I use KDE instead of Gnome?
@sol
How do you find the performance (also thermal, fan noise) to be compared to windows side of things?
Fan noise is similar to windows side due to the default fan carves, that can be adjusted similar to windows. I do see a bit of an impact playing games through proton. it's not huge but I can notice it at times, this only happens in some games, others run great with no issues at all. Every release of proton does fix a few things :)
Hi Thanks for the overview. Just bought Asus Rog Strix G16 and trying to set Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon and not working the dnf command.
Since you're on a Debian based distro, dnf will not work. What you will need to use instead of apt.
hey man , thank you for your videos , does this keyboard color changing work in pop os as well ? or is it only in fedora ? if yes please give me some guides , my only problem with pop os on my Asus laptop is armoury crate and it is annoying :d
Thank you 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
audio - dolby access ? ? ?
thanks for that I have an older G17 running a Ryzen 7 4800H, I am running Manjaro with KDE installed and restarted it works well main problem I have on this laptop is that I cannot change the screen brightness apparently it is a Nvidia issue it has the gtx1650
Odd issue but you may want to look at asus-linux.org site and look at some of the arch linux instructions for Nvidia cards.Good luck and thank you for watching!
Use fedora kde
i cant install this on mint
No wayyyyyyy a true linux user xd
so all linux on this laptop but still have macOS and Windows 11 machines so not "true linux user" just yet :) but definitely getting close to it with this setup! Thank you for watching!
thanks that was very good tutorial. very well explainde. i have an asus vivobook flip 14 ? can we do that on this machine . seriously i hate windows . too much energy wasting
Is it using nvidia driver ?
Hi. Very much interested in your project. Thanks for sharing. Looking to buy such a laptop for proxmox / virtualisation backup server. Is there a way to run it without lights, etc, as low powered as possible? If so how much does it consume at the wall? Thank you
Hello thank you for the comment! Sounds like you are taking on an interesting project of your own :) the laptop does have a control keys that allow for the dimming of the keyboard backlight which also controls the RGB lighter, you can also setup an RGB profile with the rog-control-center that is all dark and one that has lights which would then allow you to switch between on and off with one click via a key bind . as far as the 2nd part of your question. I don't have a voltage meeter so I can't answer that question, sorry. If you can come back and let me know how it went with your project that would be cool, sounds very interesting. Thank you for watching!
Awesome videos sir, even I have this beautiful laptop. Using Ubuntu Linux without any Asus keyboard or any thing. Will be glad if you can help me with Ubuntu
Nice channel 😮❤
Thank you :)
Hi, thanks for the tutorial, how would we do it in the case we want to install Linux Mint or Ubuntu?
Hello and thanks for the comment, Mint and Ubuntu would install in a similar fashion the only difference is that the ROG tools from Asus-linux.org would need some manual work and its possible they would not work at all as these distress are not supported due to the kernel version they are currently on. Thank you for watching!
Do you know how to change the color of the keyboard lights?
Hello, Thank you for the question. At 9:25 in the video I show to ROG Control Center which would let you change the keyboard lights. Thank you for watching!
Como podría instalarlo en pop os
I have ROG Strix Scar G533QM and in EVERY linux distro i have massive memory leak from amdgpu. Maybe you know how fix that?
Hello, thank you for the question. I would highly recommend you take a look at asus-linux.org and see about possibly picking up a patched kernel. Also, they are very helpful on their Discord so it's a very good resource for us Linux and Asus ROG users :). Best of luck and thank you for watching!
I'm typing with the same laptop right now.
Generally, my battery life is around 4 hours. What's the battery life after installing fedora?
Did all the functions like sound, graphics drivers, etc. work properly?
Hello, thanks for watching the video. The battery time is about the same with windows so no negative impact as far as I can tell from a battery life. Sound, Mic, Wifi, Video all work great. In Linux the AMD gpu shines compare to Nvidia which makes the G15 advantage edition a great candidate for a Linux workstation. Check out my upgrade video as well if you are looking to upgrade the RAM or change the WiFi card ruclips.net/video/x-KkK2MgLNE/видео.html if you can, please come back and let me know how your Linux install went.

Does it have the drivers for nvidia gpus? I just do machine learning projects with my GPU.
Does your keyboard work in steam games? In all the debian based destros I installed on my Tuf F15 the keyboard doesn't work for steam games
Hello and thank you for the question. I didn't have any issue using my keyboard in games from Steam. I am surprised its not working for you but to be fair ever since I have started this YT channel I have seen and heard about many odd things :)
@@SolDoesTech I found out it was just that game and changing the version of proton fixed it. The problem I'm having now is that my battery indicator doesn't update. It's stuck at 100% and leaving it to run out completely doesn't fix it either it stays ay 0% until I reboot and it goes back to 100 and stays there
What FPS do you get in Rocket League? On pretty much the highest setting, I am struggling to reach 240 FPS. I am using Manjaro and I am wondering if I am doing something wrong or if the performance is normal.
Hello and thank you for your comment, I don't play rocket league but I may have to give it a try. I would think hitting close to 240FPS is not bad at all, I am interested to know if you were hitting higher FPS on Windows?
@@SolDoesTech I have only ever played games on Linux on this laptop. So I don't know. But it would be interesting to know if Windows or Linux perform better.

Hello, my laptop is a ROG Strix G17 (2023). I tried installing Ubuntu but the WIFI adapter wasn't supported (I think). The network card is a MediaTek WIFI MT7922 and I am curious if I am going to run into the same problems with Fedora as Ubuntu? Appreciate the help.
Did you tried the command "ubuntu-drivers autoinstall"?

Thanks for the video! Can it be done with the same steps on Ubuntu?
Thank you for watching! unfortunately the asusctl software featured in this video doe not support ubuntu at this time so some of the functionality would not be possible with that software but may be possible with other packages that are not covered in this video.

Awesome brother!! Bro what about ubuntu ?? Any problem ? 🧐🧐
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately according to the asus-Linux discord Ubuntu is not a supported distribution for all the asus utilities due to the version of kernel that is currently it is being shipped with. This would also be true to any Ubuntu based distros like pop-os. The recommended distros are arch and fedora and even with fedora it’s highly recommended to be on latest version which is 37 at this time.
When I try to enable supergfxd.service I got this error: Failed to enable unit: Unit file supergfxd.service does not exist. I tried to reboot but nothing, any idea why? :(
Please try these commands:
sudo dnf install supergfxctl
sudo dnf update --refersh
sudo systemctl enable supergfxd.service
@@SolDoesTech Thank you so much, it worked! just one quick question, what does GPU mode Hybrid and integrated means? What's the difference between Hybrid and integrated?
Glad it worked :) So looks like supergfxctl is no longer a dependency of asusctl which is why the command from the video no longer works, thank you for bringing it up to my attention, I will update the comment section to reflect that! As far as your question, you would want to most likely remain in hybrid mode as that allows the use of the cpu integrated graphic (less powerful) to be used for most actions and the dedicated GPU (more powerful) to kick in when needed. if you set it to just integrated then the dedicated GPU would never kick on, this is good for situations where you are trying to conserve batter power. Thank you for watching and for your comments!
Does this work the same for TUF series as well?
Im curious too!
@@Sam70594 it will work
does this work for other distros like ubuntu? btzw good video

POP-OS works right out of the box on my ROG Strix G733Z. I removed the original MS 11 NVME that came with the G733Z and installed a new unused 2TB NVME in it and installed POP OS. It works perfectly and all Hardware parts are working.
How about the fans?

Any additional software to isntall? do you get control over the ROG features, keyboard, fans, and all that?
Thank you very much! Is better battery life with Linux ?
Hello and thank you for the question. I don't see any impact with the battery life. Its mainly due to the power profile functionality on the Asus laptop enabled by the asus-linux,.org project and the utilities they provide. Thank yo for watching!
@@SolDoesTech i tried it on pop os. it does not work properly, cant use the mux to ultimate, battery life is only "okish" compared to win11. will test fedora.

That sucks it doesn't work on Ubuntu. None of the keyboard lighting works on my Asus ROG now. I guess I'll just have to stick with a dark keyboard or go back to windows lol
Hello and thank you for the comment. You are correct this will not work on Ubuntu, the setup is specific to arch. Hyprland does not support Ubuntu (wiki.hyprland.org/Getting-Started/Installation/) and the same goes for the asus rog utilities (asus-linux.org/faq/). If you have to stick with Ubuntu then it would require lots of manual work to maybe get things going. Since Ubuntu is a popular mainstream distro I’m sure that eventually it would be supported on future versions. Thank you again for the note and thank you for watching!
@@SolDoesTech Dang, that sucks. Ubuntu would be my first choice but, maybe I can try other distros.I'm kind of confused with your setup, though. You have it running under Fedora? I'm guessing it is similar in the packages / setup towards Arch? I've used Arch / Fedora a few times but, definitely not an expert by any means ha-ha. I really like Manjaro, though so maybe that could be an option for me. (It seems like it might work) You also have a great setup as well. I'll definitely use this tutorial to get it working as, I'm not the best at Linux. Thanks
@@woolfy02 Well the reason you are confused is because I replied to you thinking you watched another video of mine so this is my fault and I apologize. So to update my answer from above the asus-linux.org project doesnt work with Ubuntu based distros at this time due to these distros using older kernels. There is support for Fedora and Arch and the site provides guides for both asus-linux.org/wiki/ One thing you can try is to please take a look at the video description as i updated some of the commands to reflect changes in the project that may help with the issue you have. Now as far as me going off about Arch in my first answer to you :) I thought you were commenting on this video ruclips.net/video/lfUWwZqzHmA/видео.html where I show how to install Arch step by step as well included a script to setup the ROG software and a tiling manager called Hyprland. Again sorry for the confusion on my part. Thank you for watching!
Bro fedora vs pop os which is best for Nvidia graphics support
Fedora comes without graphics drivers, or audio codecs making it almost useless out of the box and would need to spend about an hour after install to get shit working which is a pain in the ass. Pop is will install everything in one click in the setup. Fedora is fucking overrated asf
@@fhf17The newest build of workstation edition does the one click install at setup as well.
@@User_1795 while it has gotten better, it was a shitshow for us Nvidia users. I haven’t tried fedora 39 as it just came out, but I’ve had a lot of issues with other distros as some don’t even let me boot into live USB “neouvo cannot detect hardware “
@@fhf17 What are you waffling about? Yeah, the iso doesn't come with the drivers, but after applying the updates you should be golden lol
That is with Nvidia, with AMD you're good from the get go
Also, Pop OS is just Ubuntu LTS with a customized GNOME, which has all the disadvantages of an old ahh kernel and 2 year old packages. Pop OS succs
@@charautreal Fedora is overrated. It doesnt come with proper up to date Nvidia drivers and probably never will tbh.
Idk what the point of your comment is since you clearly state "with AMD you're good from the get go" when nobody asked what your preference is or what bias you have with a particular hardware. what makes me believe you're ignorant is that your assumption is false as the kernel is not up to date with most of the hardware from both AMD and NVIDIA that has come out in the past 2 years which is embarrassing for a "Workstation" operating system.
i owned a reference AMD RX6950xt and that also had issues. I'm sorry but if you think that just because the desktop environment works for basic needs counts as working, hate to break it to you but i plan to do more than just browse the web and work on some coding projects on a $2,000 PC
I had stutter issues when playing Halo MCC and Halo Infinite for reasons idk ( AMD just works right? ), had it freeze on me a couple times when the GPU was under load or would go black screen when i closed out of a game making it unusable.
With Nvidia like i said it has no intuitive way of installing the drivers like other distros such as Linux Mint, Nobara, Zorin OS, Ubuntu, Manjaro and so on.
From what i can imagine, you're probably one of those individuals who complain about how bad Nvidia graphics drivers are over AMD when you have like dusty 8 year old GTX 1060 off of Reddit, ( Yes those people exist )
If you're curious as to what GPUs i have on my systems right now:
PS Dont assume something will work when you haven't even tested it yourself, you're only repeating what other people say online like every AMD fanatic off of the AMD sub reddit.
I have 2 Desktops with modern components all new from the ground up with decently powerful CPUs and GPUs like RTX 4070 Ti and RX 6950xt Red Devil.

Thank you for comment! please make sure to check the commends listed in the descriptions since some of the dependencies have changed. As far as which distro is better .. that is not an easy answer to give as each distro has its own strength and weaknesses. The one thing about Fedora is that it uses very recent packages but not bleeding edge like Arch which makes it a good choice if you want to get the latest and greatest and still keep you system stable. That is why you may see Developers and Gamers use Fedora. Thank you for watching!
