Asus Strix G15 upgrade - Wifi, Storage and RAM

  • In this video I walk through the process of upgrading the ASUS Strix G15. I will also test the limits claimed by Asus compared to what users have reported the machine could actually support.
    Hardware used for the upgrade:
    - Wifi 6E: Intel AX210 for linux, if staying with Windows you may want to go with Intel killer edition AX1675
    - RAM: Kingston FURY Impact 3200MHz DDR4 CL20 - I am using 2x32GB in the video.
    SSD: Samsung 970 EVO Plus Gen 3 - You can use Gen 4 as its backward compatible. Gen 3 is all this laptop supports so it will not take advantage of the Gen 4 higher speed, so in most cases it will be a waste of money to go Gen 4.

    Thanks for the super easy to follow and straight to the point guide. Used this to install 2tb ssd and 64gb ram just like you put in and I got it done within 10 minutes and my wife was very happy I wasn't dicking around with it all night LOL. For anyone wondering I have the g533qs-ds94 model from 2021. SSD used was Crucial P3 Plus 2TB and the ram was Crucial RAM 64GB Kit (2x32GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL22. Best of luck to anyone about to upgrade its very, very easy.

    heard from many that if you upgrade ram, the laptop screen goes black with keyboard lights.
    SOLUTION: keep pressing power for 15 seconds while the screen is black. Once its shut down, remove power cord wait two mins, and now press power button for 45 seconds this will make the laptop turn on and off. Once it is turned off wait 30 seconds and turn it on. DO THESE A FEW TIMES. IT will work.

How much are you getting out of the battery with Linux, in regular use and/or some GPU demanding tasks? Which distro/kernel? Also what worked and what didn't after installing Linux? I bought this laptop on sale at 1099 on November 2022 from 1699 of the original price for the QHD version.
    With the money I saved I upgraded the SSD with 2 fast 1TB Gen 3 from Sabrent that runs cool and is much faster for gaming (I have cloned the internal to the first Sabrent and then replace it with another Sabrent for a 2TB total SSD), I replaced the slow stock ram 1Rx16 CL22 with super-fast 2x16GB DDR4 1Rx8 CL20 Kingston FURY (total 32GB) & I also replaced the unreliable WI-FI/Bluetooth card with a fast and reliable INTEL AX210 NGW. All this costed about 320$ that can be 220$ if you go for the more than enough 16GB ram. All the components I have removed I sold them for used and I made some extra cash (about 100$) for the rest of the upgrades.
    All the above are super easy to do if you have basic computer skills, 15’ time and a screwdriver.
    With the remaining money bought also on sale: one ROG Falchion NX 65 keyboard, one mouse ROG Chakram, the AUKEY PC-LM1E 1080p camera and the Creative Pebble V3 Speakers (total cost another 200$).
    All the above upgrades and accessories costed less than the discount I got from best buy and I added a few more $ to the ones I made by selling the stock parts for one QHD LG Ultragear 27GP850-B monitor at 165Hz that is currently on sale at 300$ for a full gaming set up and for bypassing completely the integrated GPU since there is no MUX switch in this laptop.
    On benchmarks and on new AAA games this configuration is faster about 25%-30% of the original configuration and faster than a i7 11800H + RTX 3080M laptop that cost about double the original 1699 price of this laptop with smaller SSD and less RAM! All upgrades plus the laptop and peripherals cost me a total of 1820$. All this for a full gaming set up (external screen, keyboard, mouse, speakers and camera) plus 2TB SSD, 32GB ram and fast WIFi6.
    Every game run on ultra-settings smoothly as butter.
    I highly recommend it even on original price at best buy if you are considering buying the Nvidia variation and you will have the fastest laptop out there and a lot of hard earned $ saved.

      Hello, that is a great question! When I originally installed the card Windows was able to discover and install the driver on its own. But after some cumulative update to Windows 11 my wifi card stopped working. I had to go to the intel site and get the official driver package and install to fix it. That is why I recommend to download the driver package from intel and have it ready and it may not be a bad idea to just install it even if windows was able to discover the device on its own.. you can get it here www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19351/windows-10-and-windows-11-wi-fi-drivers-for-intel-wireless-adapters.html

      Hello and thank you for the question. I am not too familiar with that model it is not the same as what I have but from what I can tell this model may not have a 2nd SSD slot and I am not 100% sure if it would take the 64GB of RAM (also it has to be DDR4 2666 and not 3200). Asus says 32GB max on their site but Asus also said 32GB max for my laptop model and I am able to run 64GB. But... since the model you have is not the same as the one I have I can't answer that 100%. • @SolDoesTech

      Hello, technically speaking a Gen5 NVMe drive should be able to fit in that slot but as you mentioned this laptop is a Gen 3 and you would be losing on a whole lot of performance. The other thing to consider is the heat sink on most of the Gen 5 may be too large to fit in this case although there is some space so it would depend on the specific drive you purchase. If you end up trying it please let me know how it went. Thank you for watching!

As far as the 32GB limit.. on my G15 strix I was able to show that 64GB works with no issue. I assume the same is true for the G16 but since I dont have access to that hardware I cant be 100% sure, also its possible that you may not have dual SODIMM slots so you may want to confirm that first as some models have one of the ram modules soldered to the MB. The specs also say that you can only have 1TB of SSD max.. well I installed 2x2TB with no issue, only thing I would recommend on the SSD is to get a very thin heat sink to help with managing the heat the 2 SSD can generate. Hope this helps you make your decision, good luck with your upgrade and if you can, please drop me a line and let me know how it went :)

    Hi Sol, I wanted to appreciate the really great content. I recently put in an order from best buy for the ASUS G513IC-BS71-CB to arrive in 2days time, it has got pretty much the same specs as the laptop shown in the video (not sure if it is the same model as yours though). I would like to upgrade the RAM from 16GB to 32GB, I am also contemplating upgrading the Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) to a Wi-Fi 6E. Do you have any recommendations for the brand of wifi and RAM that would best suit my model?........ Lastly, I purchased a WD_BLACK SN770 NVMe 2TB GEN 4 SSD to increase the 512GB storage on the laptop (do you have any reservations about this particular brand, if yes, which brand would you recommend)?? Thank you.

    • @SolDoesTech
      @SolDoesTech  Год назад

      Hello and thank you for the comment! So I was able to look up your system and from what I can tell its a Ryzen 7 4800. So let's talk about the SSD first.The WD Black is a nice drive. With that said, you got a Gen 4 but your system only supports Gen 3. Your drive would still work but it will not reach the Gen 4 speeds and you would most likely only get about 3500MBs. That is not a major issue just something to be aware of. The 2TB capacity would be visible to the OS as shown in my video. Now on to the WiFi, if you are sticking with Windows I would recommend any card with AX1675, you can find these on amazon for around $40us. I myself went with an AX210 card as I knew I was going to run Linux on my system and the AX210 is about half the cost since it doesn't have all the gaming functions as the "killer" version which don't work on Linux anyway. Now to the RAM, based on your CPU you will need DDR4 up to 3200MHz, I would recommend the Kingston Fury 32GB kit which you can also find on amazon (look for KF432S20IBK2/32). I made a video here showing the performance of this RAM ruclips.net/video/8nXC5qSA2qk/видео.html . Hope this answers your questions, best of luck with your upgrade and thank you for watching!

    Why choose Intel AX210 for linux, AX1675 for windows? Can i go with AX210 for windows?

    • @SolDoesTech
      @SolDoesTech  Год назад

      Both the AX210 and the AX1675 would work just fine on Windows. In fact, they both work fine in Linux as well. The reason I recommended the AX210 for Linux over the AX1675 is that the driver for the AX1675 card in Linux would just be generic and would not take full advantage of the "Intel Killer Wireless" functionality. So it's kind of a waste to buy a card that is a bit more expensive but not be able to use all of its functions. • @SolDoesTech
      @SolDoesTech  Год назад +1

      That is an excellent question! You should always follow the manufacture guidelines if you want to make sure to keep your warranty intact. On most laptops the act of opening the case would not void the warranty, there are some components that once removed or tampered with that would void the warranty. These components are usually the main board or the heatsink or sometimes both and the screws are usually covered with a temper sticker. All of the upgrades I shown in this video would not void the warranty, the only thing to be careful with are the lightbar ribbons when opening the case.

That is a good question and I think someone in this comment section had a great answer, they theorized that it was to push people to buy the scar version of the laptop. Hello, in the comments of the video I have the names and models of the items I'm using. Assuming you have the same laptop as mine... If you want go 32GB then the best way is to get a 32GB kit which would be 2x16GB so you would want to get something like the Kingston Fury Impact, search amazon for KF432S20IBK2/32. Again this is assuming you have the same laptop as mine, it's important to make sure the RAM is compatible and that you have 2 SODIMM slots. There are other brands out there but I had also done a video here showing how the Kingston improves gaming performance over the stock RAM: ruclips.net/video/8nXC5qSA2qk/видео.html Best of luck with your upgrade and thank you for watching!
