I've been contemplating abandoning Windows and pulling the trigger on PopOS, and this video gave me the confidence I needed to go through with it. I consider Anthony a credible repository of information based on everything I've seen of him in the recent past.
@@carlmclemore6104 I agree, but Pop_OS should not be the go-to distro. It has a few issues, one being that it uses Cosmic, which is forked from GNOME and is significantly slower than Plasma. Another is that I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have one-click WINE functionality. I much prefer Feren OS, which is faster than Pop_OS, and also has better functionality. You should try it out.
If only he did video guides based on subscriber requests, I'd promptly ask for a proper guide on how to lower the TDP on a linux system with multiple Nvidia cards. Following a failed Windows 10 experiment this month, I have vowed to never use Windows again (I haven’t used Windows 11 since last December). Been using Linux on at least one of my machines for over a year now.
A Linux playlist starring Anthony would definitely be really well received here, and I think, could contribute to a better understanding of it's working in general by a significant number of people!
It's funny: the thing that finally motivated me to give Linux a try was exactly the compatibility issues: I wanted a machine where I couldn't get distracted by gaming.
@@pigeonman942 - Yeah my laptop is a M1 Macbook. Can't do much with it besides productivity stuff, which is exactly why I wanted it. No gaming, can't even VM Windows on the M1. Thankfully it was a Black Friday deal so it was really cheap.
The thing is, that back in 2010, Linux really couldn't (realistically) be used as a daily driver for many people. Most times using Linux required (at least) some basic understanding of terminal and the system. However, I installed Ubuntu (not my favorite) on my dad's computer (he isn't really a computer guy) over 3 years ago, after windows 10 failed to keep running. Somehow that laptop is still kicking. Only had to help him once. Sure Linux _can_ be a hassle. But not as much as one would think. I've used PopOS for over a year now and it's one of the most versatile OS's I've ran so far and surpasses my expectations as far as usability and versatility. Especially running closed source and or windows applications. Linux was a difficult choice at first, but recently has risen to be a force to be reckoned with. Especially with the money Steam has poured into its gaming functionality.
My friend has daily driven his Lubuntu for 4,5 years now without never opening his terminal. I had to do use it once for him because he messed up the updates due to being hysterically allergic for terminal&updates and servers shutdown. My grandparents has been using Mint for 2 years now. I've got literally 0 questions why their computer doesn't work anymore. With Windows it was regular basis.
Not really. My first foray into linux was running Ubuntu on my laptop in 2010... i was 14 at the time. 10.04 lucid lynx. You didn't even need apt-get to update back then. That said, all i was doing was basic browsing and word processing... but that's all it took for me to start learning more about how to operate linux These days, you could install ubuntu, debian, mint, or some other similar entry level distro onto a flash drive and just run it when you want to play around. People just aren't willing to learn new things.
@@mirandahw explaining what it does: sudo: runs as root (root gives all perms to the command, so if you run as root you can completely break the system accidentally) rm: the remove command -rf: these are 2 arguments, --force and --recursive, force removes files that have been marked as do not remove and recursive removes all files in folders, without -r you can't remove folders -v: (--verbose) tells what files are being removed /* deletes all files under / (the root directory) --no-preserve-root disables not removing the root dir on some distros you can read the manual for the commands yourself with the command "man "

QUICK TIP as this was not mentioned. Using the demo mode (flashed to an external hard drive) you can retrieve files off other drives if windows decides to crap itself (as long as they aren't corrupt as well). I've also had success recovering files off of a dying drive that wouldn't even show in windows with this method, albeit not more than around 100mb at a time so films and large files didn't make it.
I've recovered also when using Linux (haven't tried it in demo mode), SD cards that wouldn't work on Windows. They were definitely failing. Was able to get off most of my things. Just had to sift out the corrupted files once recovered. Though sometimes the card may be too far gone even for this to work. But it is better than loosing it all. Used this method more than once.
@@snowysysadmin59 I have a cheap 1TB flash drive with Ubuntu flashed to it as an OS installer, this means I can just lauch the demo version (have to select the ubuntu installer drive in bios) and grab the files that are most important if shit hits the fan. The beauty is you can still create folders and write data on the empty space of the flash drive without having to actually install Ubuntu or most Linux OS. Like I said though if ALL the files are corrupt or a drive has completely failed this won't work, but it's definitely my goto for suspect HD issues.
If I can't recover it Windows, I always try in Linux, and about 90 percent of the time, I can get a good chunk of data. That being said be careful with certain distros and their live modes, because not all of them fully support NTFS (or HFS+/APFS) out of the box and need a helper program.

It's cool to see gaming in Linux is improving. I started using Linux back when the first thing you had to do was recompile the kernel before you could get a GUI working... It really wasn't that hard even then. That was like 20 years ago and things have gotten easier every year since. Back then it was KDE and QT as I remember. My first Linux box I configured as an IPChains firewall for my home network - that took a bit of work. :)
Actually. no, after 30 something years what would have done that, is the devs without a stick up their ass, and also gaming. at a marginal 3%adoption. just no. no year is the year of the linux desktop because of gaming and Janky AF UI and UX.

@@gorkskoal9315 It's code and app exclusivity that really kills the platform. Even with Proton, Linux is still flawed as a daily driver for gaming, due to the fact that there's still far too many compatibility and performance issues. Anthony is vastly overstating Proton's effectiveness, he hasn't talked about the biggest problem Proton faces: In the age of on demand patching and games as a service models, every single update has the potential to completely break a game's compatibility with Proton, and as a result Linux users are frequently stuck waiting to play games they own, as Proton/Wine developers forever play a game of compatibility catchup. ...Of course, the problem isn't just gaming, either, you're even more out of luck if you use Adobe products, or need music production applications, or your job wants Microsoft office apps, etc, etc. More than anything the blame rests on Microsoft and the US Government. The extremist right wing market fundies that people keep electing into government refuse to do anything about monopolies and trusts, we'd be living in a completely different world right now had they gone through with the plan to break up Microsoft around the year 2000, and forced them to open source their APIs.

Anthony's Linux series when? - tutorials on how to use and install common or tricky software for linux plz - or how to make it like a more efficent/faster windows like user experience
I think something like that would be nice, minus the "make it more like windows" aspect. Linux is to Windows as Windows is to MacOS; a different operating system. If it tries to adapt to the needs of Windows users, it might end up becoming just as bad in the future. It's important to make things clear to new users, but not to change the OS for them.
ArchWiki. Best source of knowledge bar none. Unfortunately, Joel Spolsky is quite right in Biculturalism: Linux is built for tinkerers and developers, not your regular end users expecting products they pay for (such as hardware) to *just work*. Ironically, desktop Linux is still too expensive to afford in many scenarios. It still struggles hard to find the balance between LTS (typically lagging behind a lot on drivers) and rolling release (basically impossible for developers to target in all the variety of configurations).
Linux is faster in general. At least the Arch-Linux version. My BMW benchmark in Blender runs for 2 minutes 54 seconds on Windows, on Linux it only takes me 2 minutes and 18 seconds.
If you mean more efficient as in having the same desktop environment as Windows then I would recommend getting the Cinnamon environment, it makes almost any Ubuntu based distribution look like Windows.
I first switched to Linux when in an update Windows decided that I don't need my Bluetooth drivers. That was 3 years ago. I first installed dual boot just to watch movies with my Bluetooth headphones. After 3 years, "I'm using Arch btw" right now. I fckn love Linux, I love using terminal and writing scripts. I used to only play games with my computer, now I do much, much more. I didn't just breathe new life into my PCs, it also changed my view to technology itself.

I am currently in the process of gradually transitioning my operating systems with an ultimate goal of (hopefully) transitioning to only Linux-based operating systems.
Technically not. It's because if you are making something idiot-proof, you are also inadvertently making it smart-proof. "User-friendly" is a better term.
It’s just he is very important to the company and by him focusing on that channel he would not be able to work on the main channel. So to put it in another way they would have to hire a new guy to do a Linux channel like with Max Address. Also Linux is not popular enough to be worth it to make yet another channel.
There's nixos-hardware, where people may have uploaded fixes for particular devices. Usually the difficult is knowing what to do for a given device. I would say that NixOS has had some of the best Nvidia experience, as drivers are compiled and added prior to switching to your new system generation.
I'd love to see benchmarks with Proton on a variety of hardware from high-end GPUs to APUs. It'd be very helpful to know if there's a performance hit compared to Windows, and if there is, how significant it is.
I just installed Pop!_OS on my backup PC which is much older and weaker than my main rig, and there was definitely a huge difference in performance from Windows 10, since it doesn’t have all of that ads, bloat, nor any resource hogging that makes everything so crap and slow. It’s also way cleaner and aesthetic. I prob wouldn’t have installed Linux if Anthony wasn’t there to convince me to, really like how chill and convincing he is. I have had two Windows 11 devices so far. 1: My personal desktop that I finished building a month ago. In this case, Windows 11 told me that I NEEDED to have internet to setup windows 11. The issue? I had no drivers installed so I physically couldn't have internet, AND I couldn't install the drivers because windows 11 wouldn't finish setup without Internet. After a few hours of online searching, it turns out there actually is a "continue without internet" button, but it is so cryptically hidden it beggars belief (Hint, you need command prompt). If that new build was my only way of getting online to find the solution, I would never in a million years figured that out. 2: My Work issued laptop. My work Issued me this laptop with windows 11 mostly set up, but I needed to finish the set up. Overall it went pretty smooth until all my files downloaded from the cloud and I now had more Icons than could fit on my screen. I legitimately had Icons covering icons covering icons on my desktop (I like minimalist desktops, but for work, quick access to information via shortcuts is crucial) No, the issue wasn't that I had too many Icons (normally the desktop wasn't even half full), the issue was the spacing between the icons was now 3X the size of the icon itself. Now, I cannot stress this enough, it. took. me. HOURS. of fiddling with every setting windows 11 offers, deinstalling and reinstalling any and all drivers, and delving into the deep recesses of my mind to try and figure out how to set the icons back to an acceptable spacing. Finally I found one answer online that worked. Regedit. !#%#ING REGEDIT. I had to make a REGISTRY EDIT to fix my icons. Apparently there is an icon spacing setting in the registry where you can set the spacing of icons. I edited that value to be 1/3 of what it was before, rebooted windows and BOOM, fixed. Why in fiery hell that couldn't have been some kind of option is so far and away beyond me that it is unfathomable. Every. single. thing. on this OS is just harder for entirely no reason. It continuously fails at tasks that were once simple because some setting was removed, or some design was "Simplified" and gives you no easy solution to its self imposed problem. I just learned today that Steam now allows you run Windows games on Linux. That was my last reason to stay on windows.

The step where he chooses "Clean Install" ERASES your entire hard drive. The WHOLE thing. Do not overlook this or you will lose both Windows and your personal files even if they are on a separate partition of that drive!
Yeah, I think it was at best an oversight and at worst irrisponsible not to mention this. And if you have multiple drives installed you would need to know enough to choose the "right" one for the OS. I know they're trying to make this process look easy, but that part needs a little more explanation. edit: They did pop up an annotation but even only saying "This method will erase your drive so double check before installing" doesn't really communicate the vagueries involved here especially in a video that is expressly targeted at first time Linux installers, and in many cases I would assume some people watching haven't installed any OS from scratch before. It would take one moment to say "Careful here that all the data on the drive you've selected is backed up in another location or not needed because this process will completely erase it. Prior OS, data, everything"

@James Smith , You've completely missed his point. Contributing to solutions that allow programs written for Windows to work on a Linux distro makes it... uh, easier to run Windows programs on Linux. This is a specific hardware device, yes, but Valve will continue to improve ProtonDB to work out the kinks as to why games DO or DO NOT work on Linux in general which translates to all hardware platforms... that work translates to other programs because you're swapping out Windows software layers for Linux software layers. Which leads to installing Windows programs directly on Linux even more reliably than WINE currently. Like VIDEO EDITORS! Furthermore, GAMES working is one reason why many people don't just jump over to Linux. If you hit sufficient critical mass for working applications/games then Linux gets used enough to cause an acceleration in Linux support.

while i do love it i just hope it wont stop/slow the progress of comparability solutions outside of steam. valve hade done a lot of changes (that could have been options) that a pretty sizable amount of users have had issues with (bloating and such). and being locked to only game on steam is not good either.
@@thestarvingonetso5627 ohh ok. i did not know proton is open source. im honestly surprised its not a proprietary software 0_o. tbh its quite dumb of valve (business wise) due to it would give them an upper hand on the store front market.
@@Ntwister In my opinion - yes, but no. I hope in the end it does not turn out to be the other way around, but it feels like Valve try to be something more than the other corporations in the gaming industry field. They sure are no saints, but if they push for Linux so strongly, I'd say it has it's implications and some background you can consider. Not being super in depth, but I know that the 99,99% of how to lead your business philosophy is "don't take approaches which are risky, always lean towards solutions which are least effort and greatest gain" and such. Even if Valve want to create some sort of their own environment in Linux to oppose the other companies like Microsoft, Epic, etc, then there are two factors that I see as an advantage in image for Valve 1. Linux is so niche for desktop, that trying to bang your head against the wall to make it something meaningful in matter of profit, market share etc. is far from optimal for that philosophy I have mentioned earlier. Gains can be significant, but the risk is potentially huge from the business side 2. They don't really build that wall around their garden as Apple does for example, considering that they keep their Proton open source and afaik don't have a problem with the improvements in it being ported down to the regular version of Wine. They don't kick in with own corporate vision of just getting it all owned, they contribute to the whole ecosystem in the end if we can just get more games and programs from Windows running
@@Ntwister you're not locked to steam games. Proton is open source and works with any windows software/games. The problem is getting past drm, which is not too much of a problem most of the time.

It is refreshing to see someone who knows things about computers.
That said, all i was doing was basic browsing and word processing... but that's all it took for me to start learning more about how to operate linux
These days, you could install ubuntu, debian, mint, or some other similar entry level distro onto a flash drive and just run it when you want to play around.

QUICK TIP as this was not mentioned. Using the demo mode (flashed to an external hard drive) you can retrieve files off other drives if windows decides to crap itself (as long as they aren't corrupt as well). I've also had success recovering files off of a dying drive that wouldn't even show in windows with this method, albeit not more than around 100mb at a time so films and large files didn't make it.
wait. WAIT. im gonna have to try this.

It's code and app exclusivity that really kills the platform.

As the release manager of NixOS, I've never been so insulted by being labeled hardmode.
But yes, you're correct :)
Yeah, I 💕 NixOS but I can't really *recommend* it unless someone says they're already using Linux but want more control :p
He’s promoting pop and it’s built in NVIDIA driver which doesn’t work as of like 65 in early May with DisplayPort.
"Never have I been so insulted at something I one hundred percent agree with."
There's nixos-hardware, where people may have uploaded fixes for particular devices. Usually the difficult is knowing what to do for a given device.
I would say that NixOS has had some of the best Nvidia experience, as drivers are compiled and added prior to switching to your new system generation.
And in contrast with arch, it's the hard mode, that does not have a great wiki yet... ^^
This dude is good. He makes all of this even approachable for less tech savvy people like myself. Well done mate! 👏👏

I'd love to see benchmarks with Proton on a variety of hardware from high-end GPUs to APUs. It'd be very helpful to know if there's a performance hit compared to Windows, and if there is, how significant it is.
Checkout Gear Seekers they often do linux benchmarks with GPUs
I've seen LTT do a couple on previous gaming on Linux videos and showed that some games run better in Linux than they do in Windows.
It would be really cool if LTT started including those metrics with there other stats. It would be so helpful
My overwatch installation is far faster on pop than windows on my machine (I dual boot)

@JacksonChen666 Good, because they should be in the SteamOS 3.0 forum instead.
EDIT: Now I'm using Linux on my main PC! Tried Linux Mint, but didn't live up to what I loved about Pop!_OS. Really loving and enjoying Pop!_OS, even with gaming! Huge thanks to Anthony for being the man to tell us about it!
What did you not like about mint? I'd like to switch from windows to linux and I wasn't sure about what distro to choose. Mint, pop os..
@@Maku98_ Well, Linux distros are completely up to personal preference, so I recommend trying distros before you switch to them. I personally preferred Pop over Mint for how it easy it was to install drivers and updates through user interface, and gaming performance.
Both distros are great though. Don't let other peoples' opinions change you. Plus if Linux doesn't turn out to be right for you, you can use a debloated version of Windows 10 like AtlasOS.

I stopped using linux a long time ago, just didn't really turn out to be completely right for me. dont let that change if you want to use linux or not, everyone has different preferences.
I went back to windows (even on my backup pc) mostly because of familiarity and how it "just works right out of the box" (as long as you're using something like AtlasOS, which is just windows perfected and done right. windows 11 can actually be awesome to use if you're using Atlas to speed up performance and explorerpatcher / startallback to fix up the UI)

This video was the push I needed to finally give Linux a shot. I've been testing Pop OS as my daily OS now for a few days, and other than a few minor annoyances (mostly with peripheral RGB software being incompatible), am really impressed and happy with it.
@@HallsteinI I have not. I don't have any RGB in my actual PC rig, and my Durgod keyboard stores its RGB profile on-board so that's good to go. The only thing that's "broken" is the Razer mouse, but it just cycles through the rainbow on Linux and I ignore it. *shrug*

Pop OS is meh, it's just based off Ubuntu may as well use that, or Fedora. Anyway for a gaming PC it's just not worth it, Windows 11 is awesome for mix gaming and productivity with way more support and has WSL available.
@@JFinns that's not accurate at all. Pop has a ton of quality of life changes, not only to Gnome, but in the applications they ship as well. Cosmic is shaping into its own awesome thing, and there's rumblings that they may have a rolling release based on not Ubuntu.

The statement of the century:
Congratulations, it's a penguin!
I lost it on that part hahahaha
My son would have been so happy. He swore that was what his little sister was going to be.

I've been daily driving linux for five years now, currently running NixOS. But for some reason, these videos are super entertaining
Wait so it'll wipe not only my C drive but all other local drives as well?
@@raja7775 if those local drives are one and the same physical hard drive you have, if those local drives aren't partitions of 1 hard drive, then it won't wipe the drives, unless it's a partition from that 1 hard drive
@@raja7775 Bottom line is yes. There are two options to avoid this:
1. Either do a dual boot system that will allow you to have both OS by dividing the drive in two. It's a bit more technical (and mostly requires setting up Windows in such a way that it is possible) but largely feasible.
2. Do a backup and then retransfer your backup in the new file system. Realistically, you should always make one of your system anyway
@@raja7775 No, only the disk you choose to install it to and all partitions on that hard drive/SSD. If you have a completely separate drive it won't be touched. But the disk you choose will be completely blank and rewritten for just Linux. Back up everything before running the clean install option.

@James Smith dnc (do not care)
@James Smith ,
You've completely missed his point.
For me, at least, Linux just supports way too little games

Thank god to Gabe for getting proton work with EAC and BattleEye soon as the Steam Deck will be out. This is a huge step forward for Linux gaming overall.
while i do love it i just hope it wont stop/slow the progress of comparability solutions outside of steam. valve hade done a lot of changes (that could have been options) that a pretty sizable amount of users have had issues with (bloating and such). and being locked to only game on steam is not good either.
Even if Valve want to create some sort of their own environment in Linux to oppose the other companies like Microsoft, Epic, etc, then there are two factors that I see as an advantage in image for Valve
1. Linux is so niche for desktop, that trying to bang your head against the wall to make it something meaningful in matter of profit, market share etc. is far from optimal for that philosophy I have mentioned earlier. Gains can be significant, but the risk is potentially huge from the business side
