I think he would be an elite defender at every position. Often he's in a situation in which he has to cover two different actions at one time and can't over commit to one or the other. Other players have the luxary of handling just their man (most of the time). Rudy has to cover everyone who approaches the rim. My point is, if there were five Rudys playing at one time, it would be a very stiffling experience for the other team.
he's a generational talent on defense, people hate him cus he's annoying and has butter fingers, which is understandable, cus he's restarted when it comes to offense, but yeah it goes so much further than just blocks, he's amazing on that end
I think that you’re severely downplaying Gobert’s versatility he is exceptionally mobile for a 7 footer and can more than hold his own on the perimeter. It’s just when he matches up with the elite of the elite guards then his goose is cooked. Also on/off in the playoffs is very wonky data because of the sample size and nature of playoff matchups, and when given defensive help it’s clear that Rudy can anchor an elite playoff defense as seen in last year’s WCF run. Imo he is an all-time defensive player and to relegate him to just a great role player defender is a slight to Rudy’s impact.
I think you should also look the defensive rating of the Jazz during the play offs when Rudy is on/off the court. Because if you look at that you'll see that he still carrying their defense. Probably coach is not that great having defensive adjustments in the play offs since it only become to funnel everything to Rudy
The issue against the Mavs isn't Gobert. And seriously, what Reid could have done against Luka on that game winner ? The issue was that there was nobody to guard Luka effectively. McDaniels wasn't strong enough, KAT too slow, Gobert is supposed to protect the paint, KAT and Conley too short... There is a reason why they took Randle, because he has the physicality to match Luka (in theory). And btw, Gobert is not just a good rim protector. He can move well, even if he is far from the rim. The issue is that, when he doesn't protect the rim, who will do ?
The stupid analytic coaching switched Gobert onto Luka instead of letting the other guys guard him on the perimeter and let anyone other than Luka take the shot. 😂😂😂
I guarantee you that you will get the same result like the luka gobert match up if you replace gobert with AD, Bam or 95% of the other centers. But to counter that mavs switch you need a jrue holiday type elite defense, which no other center will ever have except maybe for wemby. Teams change scheme when they encounter gobert and that is a fuckin great advantage to have, the failure to capitalize on that is the failure of the coach. I agree that team need versatility on defense too, but being able to force the other team to play certain ways because they are afraid of your rim protection skill is a generational defensive star level like dikembe mutombo. You cant deny the impact. And also jokic kills AD almost every single time they met so i think you cant put the blame on gobert. It took another center and a generational rim protector free safety defender to stop him. I guarantee you that if gobert is not in minesotta rn, their denfensive rating will plummet. He is carrying their defense bcause randle is a worse defender compared to a traffic cone.
Basically they asked him to do everything by himself, surrounding him with traffic cones acting like perimeter players. Somehow it didn't work, who could have guessed, and now it's his fault 🤦
He's misunderstood more than overrated. A lot of fans (and former players) don't actually understand modern defense. They don't understand that individual defense is less valuable than individual offense. Don't understand that every team plays zone on every possession. Don't understand the value of deterrence. Don't understand that drop coverage is a combination coverage. Don't understand how quickly defense has evolved the past 10 years. Rudy is definitely overpaid -- mainly because of his offensive limitations - which is the biggest problem with Rudy. But there is this idea in basketball that an individual can overcome bad circumstances that is so ridiculously misguided and it really hurts Rudy's reputation more than most. There is this idiotic notion that the best defender should be able to single-handedly neutralize the best offensive players that is constantly used against him. But it's nonsensical. Rudy is probably the best drop defender ever -- him or Duncan -- _and_ he is also able to hold up on switches extremely well _for a 7'2" player_ ... It's not an accident the team is so much better on defense when he is out there BUT drop doesn't work against the very very very best offensive players no matter how good the personnel and it requires good point-of-attack and help defenders too. And he's still 7'2" and can't move with guys 6-12" shorter.
@@michaelahurti think the problem with him on defense is he is generational in one aspect of defense and horrible in the other aspects Draymond said it best, if you are DPOY, there should be no situation that a coach benches you because you are the opponent’s offese’s point of attack. If youre being hunted, you are just a great defender but not 4x DPOY great
@derictan12xx But he's not horrible in any aspect on defense. He's elite to good. He's being "hunted" because pulling him _away from the rim_ is better for the offense. Not because he's Trae Young on the perimeter. He's a _good_ perimeter defender but he's an *insane* rim protector. He got benched because of his offense. Utah's perimeter defense was so bad and LA ran 5 out which neutralized Gobert's rim protection. Defense is 5 guys not 1. So Utah had to outscore LA and Rudy couldn't help. GS was 15-50 with the #26 defense (and #30 offense) the year Steph was hurt. Draymond can say what he wants but he's also useless in a bad situation.
Gobert critical effectiveness, help defense and space eating is why he won those DPOYs. Defensive awards are given out to players that impact the outcome of games. Take Wembanyama last season. Man blocked 8, 9, 10 shots every other game. Didn't matter much, because those blocks had no bearing on the success of the team. Gobert blocks 2 or 3 per contest, but those blocks led to a key basket that resulted in a win, or a stop that led to a win. With the Spurs having a better season and the Wolves floundering, the tables will no doubt turn if the teams continue their play.
when u block 10 shots it's arguably 20 points that the other team could've had idk how someone with a bit of basketball knowledge could say that keeping the team 20 points behind didn't matter much on the outcome of the game ...
@@GoulaLegamerKey word being arguably. 10 blocked shots _can_ save 20 points but it's usually much less because unless your team recovers the ball it doesn't mean much. I can go through all the math but suffice to say blocks are not all that valuable. Especially compared to rim defense/deterrence more broadly. Though Wemby is actually a bad example because he's worth 5-6 points on defense. He provides massive rim deterrence, drastically reduces at rim FG% _and_ also blocks shots. And he's very aware of keeping the ball in play too.
Rudy's flaw is he can't shut down Steph Curry, Luka Doncic, James Harden and Nikola Jokic. Lol. Basically 4 of the 10 best offensive players of all-time. If Rudy played in the east I'm not sure we'd be having any of these conversations.
And in fairness, 3 of those players aren't supposed to be shut down by Rudy because they're primarily faster, more technical players who have strong games in the perimeter and the 4th is Nikola Jokic
@@jonathand.t.5051Also let’s not pretend that Jokic wasn’t hitting literally impossible shots in that game 5 last year 😂 rewatching the tape and there’s not a defender alive that could stop him from scoring that night.
I don’t really agree on your playof take. Rudy is like any other nba star or super star when they get double teamed they are struggling that’s obvious. That’s why when you hve a superstar offensive player you give him a second and third option so that ther are solutions. Sale goes for Gobert it is wrong to think that him alone will carry the team because yeah he has weaknesses like any other man that’s why the wolves got mc daniels conley and naw to help him out but none of them had a solution for luka or kyrie and naz an kat could not contain the mavs bigs Yes the mavs exploited Rudy’s weakness but no minnesota failed at covering it. Also taking Gobert out would have been worse because no one is as good as he is in protecting overall defense. The most painful minutes to watch in those games are those when he is on the bench
lets be real, naiz reed would of not made a difference defensively against the mavs, they lost cause they had no point of attack defenders to guard luka and plus they should of put rudy on derrick jones jr and have him room of him like the Celtics did with prozingis.
The issue with Rudy’s offense is that he’s SUCH a good rim protector, he protects the rim from himself!
