The beautiful Mel Thompson taught me a Mascara tip that I have used every day since watching her video…
She taught her viewers after we put on our traditional route to tip mascara… Add more to the tips by brushing the wand behind the lashes, essentially coating front and back of the lashes.
It feels awkward at first, and I do not go down to the route when I am behind the lashes because I’m always afraid of messing up my shadow.
I’ll put the wind behind my lashes about halfway and stroke up to the tips .. it’s amazing the eyelashes just grow longer than you expected by doing it our traditional way it’s just a little extra that makes such a difference!.
Mel Thompson sadly passed away about a year and a half ago. Her videos are amazing and she seems like a beautiful person inside and definitely outside.
Her love to make up, had me fall in love with make up all over again . I learned so much from her.❤️ she has missed

You really nailed the perfect way to apply daily makeup. One tip that I would have is to store your stash logically in two major categories; every day makeup and bump it up makeup. Sort into categories i.e., eyes , brows, lips, foundation, blushes, contours, bronzers and brushes. You will be amazed when your stash is in all out there and decision time is written all over your slightly green face. What is still usable (and you will use) vs old lipstick that says " I'm old and I stink" My last tip is to select your look ahead of time and set out the products you've selected for today's look. Do your thing and put everything back where it belongs. Fifteen minutes and you're out the door.

Risa, I am wearing this today for the first time (Futurist Hydra Rescue) and I have very oily skin as well. As my day has gone on, I find that I LOVE it! I don't mind the light coverage because my skin is quite nice, but I am shocked at how is wears. I've had it on all day (7am) and I have only blotted once at 4pm. I'm in love.

I have always preferred cream blush over powder. It was just always my preference but I am a dry skin girl Powders just don’t seem to last on me very long.
For anyone wanting to try a cream blush I recommend the MERIT cream blushes. They go on like a dream, and they have neutral colors that are not too orange and they’re really beautiful, natural looking blushes… I also have one of theirs that looks orange in the pan, but it is a beautiful peach and you can build it up or use as little as you want….
MERIT OF ALL OF MY CREAM BLUSHES ARE THE ONES I CONTINUOUSLY REACH FOR..

These were all great tips! When I go to get a manicure and pedicure I am in a comfortable outfit sort of a jogger/lounge type one and the same when I get my hair done. I pull my hair up or ponytail and wear minimal makeup. Usually sunscreen, cream blush, a light concealer like the Glossier one, a little Boy Brow and lip gloss. I feel very comfortable but put together as well!! Thank you for sharing your tips!!!

Hahahaha I was a “brow neglecter “ all my life until my mid 40’s😬😳. Never waxed, plucked coloured.....never thought about them and never touched them and no idea for the life of me why because I was always very particular about how I looked lol
I do have thick full brows ( maybe it was good I didn’t go for the super over waxed/plucked brows in the 80’s/90’s) but I do get them waxed and shaped regularly now and I never leave the house without doing my brows😊

Great video Risa! It’s always great to get make up tips from a professional make up artist. I think the problem with older women and mascara is that they need to use a magnifying mirror to assist them. I notice with my 75 year old Mom she doesn’t get to the root of her lashes either. And like you said in another comment it’s good to use a metal lash comb to comb out clumps after doing 2 coats.

I really enjoy the Becca undereye concealer in the little jar to brighten my undereye area. And I notice that I just need a lighter concealer in the center of my face around and on my nose. The RUclips triagle on the cheeks is not for me as it creases and accentuate more as a good foundation will do. I use a spotconcealer in my skintone for spots out of the center of my face if needed.

Love love love this video! I agree with mascara in layering it and brows are a must for me too. I’ve been struggling with the eyeliner part. Coming up to being 50 and funny you mention the winged look changes with age as I can tell my eyes are getting droopy and hooded eyelids appearing. I stopped eyeliner and now using an eyeshadow. You’re tutorials are awesome. Thank you! 💕

I really appreciate these tip videos. I'm 39, and I've just basically never learned how to take care of my skin or wear makeup properly. I'm a bit of a tomboy (though I've always liked make up as a fun type of self expression) and I'm definitely lucky in that I come from a long line of people with naturally young looking skin (my mom is 60 but looks 40, and my dad's dad looked young his whole life, even at his death at 74 he looked more like 50). I also have low-maintenance eyebrows.
Not bragging, unfortunately because of abuse and trauma, I also have 0 self esteem. So I hate attention. So I've purposely dressed frumpy and avoided makeup since my teens (I'm a sexual assault survivor and I think I unfairly associated my attractiveness with my attacks/abuse).
But now my low self esteem and lack of self care has me concerned about what example I'm setting for my children. Especially my daughters. I don't want them to think taking care of yourself isn't important. I want them to love themselves, so I want to learn to love myself.
My mom has a very old fashioned makeup routine. It has never worked for me. Even though I did get some of her "youthful skin" genes, I still seem to have some differences with my skin type/needs. Like, my under eyes are WAY more puffy/crepey. Especially the past 3 or 4 years. IDK if it's physical differences or if I'm just more stressed than her, but I feel like I'm starting to look even older than my mom 😟.
I also have hyperpigmentation on parts of my cheeks/temple area (probably got it from my dad's side. He seems to have that issue too). My skin is also WAY more sensitive. I hardly breakout (I don't have much acne) but many makeup products (and skin products in general) give me rashes. What looks good on her looks really cakey on me and gives me hives 😬 It also just looks very dated (she's used the same makeup routine since the 80's).
She also doesn't really wash her face or use any creams...
Basically I have needs that my mom couldn't really teach me to deal with LOL So I really appreciate videos like this. Thank you!

Love the shimmer advice as well as the handful of different foundations, as I follow the same philosophies. Some days i mix a little full coverage with light coverage which makes the perfect coverage on those days.
You offer great advice and some good products. Since im older I said goodbye to drugstore products years ago. I figure I earned the right to treat spoil myself. 😅❤

Hi, Risa!. Thank you so much for this. I’ve yet to find the right concealer. I’m 70 now and concealer sinks into fine lines around my eyes. Crow’s feet just showed up a few years ago because I was blessed with oily skin that doesn’t wrinkle easily. But when it does, look out! I’ll try the Maybelline and Milani concealers you mentioned. I can’t afford to keep wasting $ on higher end concealers that end up in the trash.

Thanks so much for this video! I’ve never been very into makeup and never really felt that I knew how to apply it correctly, so it’s great to be able to learn from you. Question-after applying liquid makeup, do you use a powder foundation to “set” your makeup? I’ve always done that using a translucent powder, but have found that sometimes I look “powdery,” if that makes sense. I tend to have oily skin so if I didn’t use powder I’d feel like my makeup would melt off. Thanks again for your videos!

Im sure you werent asking for advice from anyone but I'll share my preference. I definitely wore more powder in my younger days but like you as i got older I felt powdery. Then if i blended it was as if the powder was pointless. It also at times did appear to sit in my wrinkles.
I now at 48, use foundation, concealer then blend with some fabulous brushes. Blending the areas appropriately to the areas. It looks so much better & much more natural. For me, atleast its much more natural than the powder. I had to learn about brushes first as I didnt know anything about makeup until in my 30s. Hope this helps in some way.
If you have any questions I'm happy to help.

There’s also clear lip liners out there. I think Elf or Milani sells one.

Me rissa, I am loving the cream blushes now, they really give that sort of glow you mentioned sometimes I top it off with a pinch of powder blush one that have a little glow to it not shimmer.and I am all set to go.

Your makeup in the video is beautiful. I think when you wear a soft neutral look you look younger ❤

Great video, Risa! I have the hardest time figuring out where to place my blush and how much to use regardless of how many tutorials I watch. Help!

I can address that in a video soon! Placement of blush depend a lot on a person’s face shape. I always tell people if you ever put too much on, just go over it with a bit of loose powder. That will tone it down.

Risa Does Makeup I will happily volunteer to fly to Vegas and be your over 50 model who has limited cheek real estate for blush 😉 and while I'm there, you can do the rest of my makeup & we can have a girl's day of shopping at Fashion Mall! Sound good?
