I can't believe they tried to say Whitney couldn't sing in this skit. People laugh because the skits were usually funny because they were true in some way. Whitney could sing her a$$ off, for real.
Richard Gholston I get it now, but 20 something years ago I didn't really think about it until watching it again. What I didn't get is why they didn't just go ahead and make fun of Whitney's songs instead of throwing her in a Janet video.
+cosmicroyal77 Maybe because they thought that nothing could top the title "Rhythm(less) Nation", as pertaining to her dancing ability, or lack thereof . Just my thoughts.
It was brilliant. I still remember watching it live. Back then it was a thing for people to remark about Whitney and Janet's crisscrosses talent level.
The voice of Julie Brown (the lady in the intro) sounds like a pretty cool combination of the voices of Krystal in Star Fox Assault, Samantha Traynor in Mass Effect 3, and maybe Miranda Lawson in Mass Effect 2 and 3.
Well, AlwaysWrong83, Whitney had two musical faces (showing how versitile she was) her sound on records were more pop orientated, while her concerts were much more soul stirring (please watch her live concerts from the 80's). When you are being signed to a big label, there is very little you actually can say. Most of the decisions are made by the suits. In addition, Aretha debuted in a different era. Her music from the late 60's is very different from her music from the 80's, which is...cont.
If u listen she says the fact that I can sing not cannot. Basically saying that she can sing hides the fact that she cannot dance. Whitney was never a good dancer. She had two left feet...that was well documented. This parody was not slamming her singing ability.
Don't Really Understand That Brother? If they were not trying to clown her singin ability, then why was Kim Wayans playing Whitney & singin so terribly here..
I don't know what Keenyan Wayans was thinking. Whitney Houston could sing. Go figure that out. I 'm a Whitney Houston fan for life. RIP Mrs. Whitney Houston.
lol ur crazy!!! Houston is a very good piano players and always did her own Arrangements to songs, just check any credit on her albums. And just like Aretha did most of her songs in 1 take. Houston was very musical. She was doing background vocals for Chaka Kahn, lou Rawls, Jermaine jackson as a 14 year old. learn ur history
I know that Whitney Houston was not a dancer, but that is not even the point. The point is that she built her career as a singer. When we think of Whitney Houston, we think of her voice. She is THE VOICE. Michael Jackson is the dancer. We think of dancing when we think of Michael Jackson even though he can carry a tune.
Debra Wilson does the best Whitney Houston.I love both Debra and Kim though. And for people talking bad about this skit, how long ago was this skit.I dont think i was even born when this skit aired(maybe two or years before me).Mad tv did Whitney worse than this.Everyone knows Whitney was a once in a lifetime talent,im sure even those who have made fun of her.She gets to finally rest, and those who made fun on her(at least should, idk if they do) move on,and let her.
It's amusing when people claim that Whitney Houston didn't need to write, dance or make good videos because she had an amazing voice. However, they fail to consider the fact that her voice deteriorated in the mid-90s and she never fully recovered it. Therefore, what was left for her to rely on? How good her voice used to be? Being a great singer is wonderful, but if that's the only talent you possess, then you are limited. Whitney died nearly broke, while her songwriters were able to afford their own islands. If she had played a more active role in songwriting, she may have been able to recoup publishing royalties. Furthermore, if she had known how to dance, she could have continued to electrify the stage even after her voice started giving out. This would have made it easier for her to tour in her later years and still generate significant income. The bottom line is that while being a great singer is fantastic, it may not be enough to sustain a long-term career. Additionally, many exceptional vocalists tend to lose their voices as they age. Therefore, it's wise to have other talents or skills besides singing.
Whitney was an actress, singer, producer, philanthropist and occasional cowriter etc. and when were her videos terrible? you quite possibly cant name a more iconic 80s video than iwdws. On top yes she was a touring performer which is why she could tour. i dont see you doing any of this🤣 and even if her voice “deteriorated” she was still singing well in the 2000s. just like mj, whereas his later years were more about his dance moves hers was about her voice. people were not checking for his voice in the 2000s so keep it cute.
I always thought that I was the only one who thought that she couldn't carry a tune. Thank You Wayans Brothers! They pointed out that fact back in 1989 with this parody.
@AlwaysRight83 Whitney Houston is actually one of the mosy creative singers of all time. She arranged all of her live performances, and she has exemplary improvisational skills. She always found a way to incorporate gospel melodies into her songs. She is a genius, just because she didn't write or compose her music, doesn't mean she is any less of a singer. Some of the greatest singers of all time (Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald) didn't write their own music.
