  • I have been very busy lately making dry plates, spending a lot of time in the container darkroom. It was about time to finally pack the Intrepid 4x5 again and head into nature. We also had very bad weather lately with lots of rain but these kind of days are perfect for long exposures and water shots. So I started early at around 7am and drove towards the area that I explored in my last video from the field. To be exact I visited a beautiful and very deep canyon called Predoselj in the north of Slovenia close to Austrian border. Weather was fine, a bit cloudy but no rain so I started making my way down to the bottom of the canyon. When I reached the river there was a bit more water than what I would like but it was still very beautiful! And then the rain came, then god I found a rock wall under an angle that offered me a bit of roof. I waited and waited and waited but it was still raining so I have decided to at least try and make one shot from under the shelter I was in. By the time I was done with the first exposure, rain calmed down a bit so I have decided to also expose my second plate. I grabbed the camera and ran out in the open. By this point everything was soaking wet anyway. When I got back home I developed both plates and was really surprised by the results. Enjoy watching :)

    Very cool! If this was where I live, it would be packed full of people!

      Thanks. Yes I bet. We have quite a few places like this so people spread a bit :D

    Photographing in the rain and snow has given me some of the pictures I like best. Many years ago when I started with large format I sewed an oversized focusing cloth and then sprayed the outside with 3M Waterproofing Spray. There's probably something similar in your country. When photographing in the rain or snow I cover the camera with my waterproof focusing cloth and it really helps prevent the camera, lens and film holders from getting soaking wet. I re-spray the focusing cloth every couple of years or so and let it hang in the sunshine until the smell goes away. Works very well!

    Shooting in the rain is one of my favorite conditions. It softens the light so much yet colors and textures get a bit deeper from the wet sheen on everything. Plus, I just like the mood of being out in nature when it's cool and wet. The last advantage is that you're less likely to run into crowds of people on a rainy day!

    Enjoyed the video. I think we have all experienced the occasional brain fart. Just yesterday I accidentally exposed a a pack of Polaroid film, thinking it was an empty canister. $20 dollars down the drain. BTW, there is an accessory that attaches to your tripod to hold an umbrella. I've seen Steve O' Nions use it several times.

      Yes I have seen the umbrella mount but a bit of wind and everything can tip over so maybe not

    It's always good to see mistakes as well as incredible images. I'm sure Ansel Adams had his share of double exposures. Few photographers would continue in such weather so good for you. Call the double exposure "Waterfall in a Container" ...lol. Cheers from Canada.

      Thank you Wayne for such a lovely comment once again. How is weather in Canada, snowing probabbly?

    Hi Nedj! one question: do you use accelerator in drying your emulsion? or you let it dry naturally? Nice location considering we are in this situation and you are enjoying photographing. Really nice!

      No I let them dry on a cold marble slab for at least 24h

    We've all managed a double-exposure. I was so angry with myself as I drove a long way especially to get that shot.
    I also shot the same scene in color so all is not lost (still waiting to develop the sheet of film though).

    I'm really paranoid about getting my Intrepid 4x5 wet but see you don't have a problem with that issue. Did you coat the wood with anything to provide extra waterproofing? How do you dry it after such rain? Have you had any problems with the rain?

    • @lostlightart6064
      @lostlightart6064  3 года назад

      I didn't proof the wood with anything yet but it would be smart to do it before anything gets damaged. I usually let it dry beside a gentle worm fan ;)
