  • A trip out to the west coast of Canada with my restored 1909 5x7 film camera and a pile of black and white film. I wonder old hiking trails and cedar forests with my old wooden camera and try and capture the beauty of the place like some of the old master landscape photographers. The west coast is magical for any photographer working with any type of camera gear.

This is a very nice video, Todd. Kudos to the videographer. Of course, your photography is outstanding and makes watching the video worthwhile. I love the west coast of Vancouver Island. Over the years (30+) I have photographed the Ucluelet/Tofino area with my 4x5 camera, sometimes with an 8x10 and more recently with a digital camera. I shoot a Toyo 5x7 and a Deardorff 8x10. Lately working in shooting paper, then reshooting the resulting neg as a positive in Digital Raw.
      Veery good channel, my friend.

Your videos are well thought out, expertly produced and full of useful information. Your work is inspiring. However, I must point out that there’s no such thing as 120mm film.

Yes indeed just an old habit of how I call it. It’s actually just 120 film. It’s named after it being the 20th film produced by Kodak. The company wanted a common naming convention so when people asked for a film everyone knew what they were talking about, hence 120. Since the fist film on flanged spools started at 101, they kept that naming convention. I think the actual size of the film is 61mm. But when you say 120 film everyone knows what your talking about. Old habits die hard. :-)

A few questions, Todd, if you don't mind: how do you develop 5x7? Do you use trays or is there a tank somewhere? Also, why do you use f45 and above? Is there extra sharpness at that f stop? Larger DOF? Not sure what your reasoning was. I do a fair amount of 4x5 using Nikkor lenses add usually don't use such high f-stops and wondered why you would only use these values. TIA

I develop my film in Jobo expert tanks using constant agitation, I am actually doing a video right now of the process I use, it will be out in a week or so, stay tuned. I use F/45 and sometimes F/64 to get the most depth of field I can get, I want everything in the photograph is sharp, so on a big print the viewer can see every little detail.
