I walk along the wind-blown path
With leaves strewn at my feet -
The trees are bent from nature’s wrath
    There’s someone I must meet.
And as the thought comes to my mind
    A windsong brings a crow
Which ‘lights upon a branch and I’m
To learn what I must know.
“It’s time,” she says, “for you to fly
You’ve been given many a feather.
Try out your wings and touch the sky
    You’ve long lost any tether.
Leave all the sorrows of long past days
    Rush now, the future’s calling.
All wounds have healed, now turn your gaze
There is no risk of falling.
Remember that it’s me the crow
Who’s helped you find your wings.
I’m there when soft or strong winds blow
    No matter what life brings.”

    Beautiful.
Today at dawn, before the devil had put on his slippers, the crows alerted me to the fact that _something_ was going on outside. I've rarely heard them so mad. I opened the kitchen window and stuck my head out, and lo and behold, a red fox was moving through my neighbourhood. It was intensely mobbed by the crow pair, some magpies and even a fisher gull had joined in. The fox didn't care much about them or me though and just sauntered through at a slow pace, sniffing and exploring.
What's funny to me is that the neighbourhood is full of pet dogs of all sizes, and I've never seen a crow react to one in the slightest. But this fox was totally unacceptable. They went down real low on fences etc to really give it an ear full at close range. So despite the fact that these crows were likely hatched and raised here in a human city, they didn't hesitate for a moment making the distinction between a dog and a fox.

They hate foxes like nothing else. My guess is that in contrast to dogs and cats, foxes actually do hunt crows.

One or two years ago my crows were the reason I voluntarily learnt a poem by heart for the first time in my life. Yeah, that one. Took me weeks, if not months... And my crows were not the least bit impressed. 😆🖤 But after all they really cannot stand ravens...
