- Mendenhall Glacier Ice Caves Trek in Juneau Alaska. This is a fantastic adventure and I highly recommend to anyone looking for an exciting Alaskan outdoor adventure.
Sure you can get to the Mendenhall Glacier by boat or helicopter, although the most exciting way to get the feel of the rugged Alaskan terrain is by trekking through the forest, over the mountain, out to the Mendenhall Glacier and down in the ice caves. This all day event is physically challenging and definitely not for those who aren't in good shape or those who don't enjoy a little uncertainty in their life, like scaling rock faces, trekking on slipery surfaces, thin ice and Oh Yeah, I almost forgot about the bears.
It's totally shocking to see how much the glacier has shrunk over the years referencing the historic markers along the way, which is the best reason to head out to the Mendenhall glacier sooner than later.

Thanks for watching!
Amazing
I try to hike there but in the right side. That mountain really climb. Alone. Really hard because the river that ends in the waterfall grow to much, to do it alone. I’ll gonna try this year again in this way more easy for sure but really nice views too. Thank you for the video.
This is great! Been to Mendenhall twice when I have visited from Petersburg but never reached the caves. One of my top things to do. Thanks for the video!
The glacier is melting at a pretty fast rate so we are so glad we went when we did.
I miss when the mendenhall glacier was right up to nugget falls. Before the rock slide. You used to have to climb a bit of rock face to get over to the sandbank if you didn't want to get wet. I used to sit up there and draw. I also miss when it was completely free to go there and they decided to destroy the area with ramps and walkways for tourists. It drove out the animals. My family has been here for countless generations and people moving in and commercializing the area has made it so I can't even afford a home here anymore.
Enjoyed this vlog because kind of off beaten trail and the ice cave experience. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. This was a great experience.
This is great video. Still scary thinking of the trek but I do want to get to the caves and pools.
It definitely offers something for everyone. Glad you liked the video.
I’m going in about 3 weeks. Is there an easier way to get to the glacier and do the caves? I’m worried about the trek myself. But I am dying to see those caves
Also who did you book your tour through?
Yes, you can get their by canoe / boat, which eliminates the majority of the trekking.
@@kat962009 Above and Beyond also know as ABAK. They did a super good job and while I don't know for sure if Leah is working this year, they do have a lot of talented guides and if you take the boat it would be another guide.
I live here. To answer your question, there are helicopter tours with Temsco and a few others that will land you on the glacier in less than 15 minutes from departure. But to hike to the glacier, there is only one trail. Also, the caves are temporary. If they were here two months ago, they might not be here now, but new ones open up constantly. The helicopter tours will know where they are but you have to specify that is what you want to see.
Thank you for this amazing video!! How long was the trek to the ice caves?
Hi Jacob. Start to finish was about 8.5 hours, which included a few breaks along the way. All of us were fairly tired afterward due to the terrain.
@@jefgoodrick3981 thank you for the insight!!

Just one question: do they identify as a bride and groom? It seems pretty aggressive to assume their preferred pronouns.
Hi Dave, yep! Bride and groom aka husband and wife. Old school terminology.
There's always one 🤦🏽♀️
