All Devil May Cry reviews I've made so far:
    • Devil May Cry
DmC: Devil May Cry, also known as Devil May Cry Reboot or just The Reboot, came out in 2013 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. It got a definitive edition in 2015 for PS4 and Xbox One that bundled all DLC with it, as well as some fixes to the control scheme, gameplay balancing, some extra game modes, and revoking Vergil's fedora privileges lol.
Unfortunately, this Definitive Edition is not available on PC, so the version of the game that I played was the original release. However, even if I had played the Definitive Edition on console, I would have still criticized the game's pre-definitive faults, as the fact remains that there's still a major platform that can only experience this game in its initial state at release.
Most of this video is simply my opinion, feel free to agree or disagree so long as you do so reasonably. Overall it's a fun game with a lackluster story, especially if you're fond of the older games, it really feels like they didn't do this one justice, even by reboot standards.

The Dresden Files (novel series by author Jim Butcher) is about an ugly, gritty, violent 40yo private investigator in Chicago who's also a Wizard, but he prefers a gun. He solves supernatural crime with effort, sacrifice, injury, and still routinely fails to make rent or afford his hospital bills.
The Dresden Files TV series was about a sexy 20-something flirting with the equally sexy 20-something cops with his cool fire-making magic while sometimes easily solving crimes by glaring at it maybe.
That studio-driven focus-group written distortion of a beloved work was what exactly what I was feeling when playing DmC, and why I wasn't able to finish it.

A strange imitation that would be unrecognizable if it didn't have the original's name on it

I distinctly remember the discourse around this game when it came out. I agree exactly with how you felt in the end it tries way too hard to be cool and edgy. I’d say the big thing this game lacks is the core family drama that makes DMC so engaging the original game is subtle yet potent. Whereas this game is loud and in your face. The biggest complaint was that Dante was already cool he was created from Hideki Kamiya’s idea of cool and that made it special and unique. Reboot is like getting a focus groups idea of cool for the time the game was originally released, ultimately ending up forgettable as a result.

No but seriously though the only meaningful thing Reboot!Sparda did was put his meat in the no no zone.
They completely abandoned the plot point of him turning on his comrades and soloing the entire demon army, which really drove home his resilience as well as his independent thought.
Like he was willing to acknowledge everyone was wrong and back his words up too. He's never shown up in any of the games in person, but this part of his story alone still gives off so much badassery, and you respect the guy so much despite never even having met him.
Reboot!Sparda's story is used to explain why Dante and vergil are where they are now, but like I said, it's like that was his ONLY purpose and the writers just straight up forgot about him afterwards

Somewhat tangentially related to DmC: Devil May Cry with what i'm about to post, but i'm going to write it anyway:
Late 2022 saw the release of a new game in this genre by name of Soulstice, that seemingly takes inspiration/could be related to a number of inspirations in the genre such as Bayonetta (level structure and rankings), Greek God of War (camera and big scenic vistas when traversing), Darksiders (dark fantasy tone and story) and seemingly both DMC5 and DmC: Devil May Cry in terms of gameplay (and customizable training room).
But while color coding elements is part of the DmC inspirations, Soulstice does it in a way that *doesn't* suck: The player character's dead sister casts a forcefield that moves around together with the player characters, and as such every of the seven total weapons can be used just fine on any other enemy.
Can even be upgraded as you proceed on, so that the field gains more reach for example, or the vulnerability effects persists for a short amount of time after an enemy exits it.
Heck, the dead sister herself (her name's Lute) can be upgraded to passively attack and even have specific counter moves. The skills aren't just percentage/number-based RPG stat stuff but can be quite substantial. Heck, you can even get full currency refunds to try out other skills with if you don't jive with the initial ones.
Furthermore, there's a boss that *could* bring to mind the Saviour from DMC4... but it doesn't take ages to do for reasons of hopping between platforms or finding weak spots or dealing with summons. The only weak spots are its hands, the summons can be prevented entirely which boosts the game's variant of the style gauge, and there's only four platforms in a semi-circle around the boss to run between. May not be a *fantastic* boss as such, as those big head-and-hand bosses tend to be, but i'd say it's solid for how it ended up.
Bosses in general in Soulstice are quite good, and that game's version of a Style Gauge also doubles as a kind of Magic resource for special combo finishers or unleashing the special state.
It's a pretty good game with its own ups, downs and interesting things. And despite all these comparisons, including the one that may raise eyebrows like DmC's one, it still has its own things to offer. Would recommend checking that one out.
Or if you just want to go 2D Ninja Gaiden levels of rapidfire brutal gore with stuff like robot chainsaw/gatling gun arms, katanas, dual meat cleavers, a brick on a stick wrapped in spiky bits, a giant syringe, and more, i can heartily recommend The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile by Ska Studios. Fun time that is hardly talked about in this genre.

Netflix adaptation is such a great way to put it. The game wasn't _terrible_ but it wasn't good either. It's like if your grandpa made a DMC game and just read wiki pages on the previous ones while trying to appeal to the popular crowd at the time. You also have to remember, back then Emo was still insanely prevelant. At least my high-school was filled with people of that aesthetic.

DMC feels like someone tried to make Dante channel the soul of Duke Nukem, and all the charm and action hero machismo got squeezed out to make room.

Oh yeah, i remember the trailers back then. Be glad you never saw them. The moment the players and just fans of the previous games saw these trailers they were pissed. Because they showed an ugly ass guy with cigarettes who wasn't Dante and called him Dante. And if you ask me, the thing giving you the ick is not just the game trying too hard to be edgy. It's just gross. Fanservice in JRPGs is cool, because it actually looks good. This game looks gross! Just absolutely disgusting! Be real with me weapons. Sexy anime girls or this shit? I prefer the anime girls. And the word Nephilim just describes the child between a demon and a holy being like an angel. The goddesses in Seven deadly sins ware basically also just angels. A nephilim is born form the connection these 2 races that should have technically been at war with each other. I think Nephilim also sort of means impure child because of their heritage. Well, I still prefer classic Dante. Classic Dante is the best. And classic Vergil isn't even really evil. He is just severely traumatized and has found the worst way to cope with it. While Dante embraced his humanity and tried to help others, Vergil embraced his demon side because it was what saved him when he was a child. The reboot characters are the worse package, even if they actually looked good. And they don't. The game is ugly as heck. Anyway, these are just my 2 cents. And in my opinion, if you put in fanservice, make sure it is tasteful. Vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity is just gross. I hope you enjoy DMC 5. It is not that bad. But they ruined Neros hair! My poor boy. What have they done to your beautiful hair?

It's mostly for narrative reasons and Capcom/Ninja's attitude leading up to release. If DMC2 wasn't such a snooze fest, this game would probably be at the bottom of most people's lists.

@@weaponsci to me it was its story that was the worst and character creation,, Nero and that squeling Kyrie were just plain annoying in dmc4 . Lack of memorable moments except for the Dante fight also didn't help. I loved every single boss encounter in dmc 3,that entry just set the bar way too high and devs didn;t seem to understand what made it so enjoyable.
DmC on the other tried to avoid cliches that the 4th one had and ended up giving us second hand embarrassment sometimes but it wasn't as plain as the 4th one and i just appreciate it more

I'll give you that 4's bosses were a lot more forgettable than 1 and 3's (which is funny since you fight all of them except Credo like three times lol). The only ones that really stood out were Credo himself and Berial, and for the latter that's mostly because of the music
