0:31 If you can’t do Mortal Kombat, you can instead maybe do a video on DMC’s spiritual successor, Pizza Tower? Has DMC3’s combo meter system…kinda.
WAP is allowed to trend on here, but you can't make a game review...
I thought THIS time I could escape down here....that was not the case.
What specifically got flagged? Mundus railing the sex doll, Dante's Austin Powers dress up, Vergil in his DMC3 outfit?
Sorry I just like to try and understand this backwards ass content review
That's not very Poggers Johnny 😁
Fun fact: The voice actor who played Vergil in this game, David De Lautour, played R.J. in Power Rangers Jungle Fury. So that's yet another power rangers actor who voice acted in the devil may cry series.
I never made that connection. Stoner Pizza Mentor being Virgil.
Huh. That's interesting. Seems like Vergil is destined to be played by Power Rangers actors.
@@broodjebamibal one of the best ranger mentors too in my opinion. :)
Honestly wish he had a better script to work with...
Even in the reboot power rangers is always connected to devil may cry with actors alone
So again.... Johnny questioning zoomer lingo only to then utter the phrase "fetus deletus" not even two minutes later is a high point of the entire channel.
AND THANK GOD THAT BIT DIDN'T GET TAKEN OUT LOL

That line sounded like it would have been a candidate for the chopping block
@@KingOmega123It was the first thing I checked for because I thought it WAS the part he had to edit out.
Maybe that was the reason it got age restricted or it might be the succubus “F” you cutscene.

The struck realization of being a Sonic-fan made me laugh even harder the second time.
And let me tell you, as a Sonic fan with a MYRIAD of unpopular opinions about the series (one of them being that I find the classic games overrated), Johnny’s statement about being a Sonic fan really resonated with me!
Shadow the Hedgehog is a pretty fun yet funny game. Not good, but at least it's better than a sonic oc fanfiction with a budget (sonic fartces).
@@veggsbacon1891 Truth be told, I actually kind of enjoy Forces. I’d play it over Sonic 1, the Adventure games, and ESPECIALLY Sonic CD any day.
@jaredargento1511 Ah, 3% of the fandom. But we all know Zavok is best character and Big is God. 🤓☝🏼
@@veggsbacon1891here's a bold opinion: Shadow is a good game. Flawed, like melee weapons are useless, homing attack has an unintuitive threat area, and the plot suffers from the mission structure, and some missions are long in the tooth, but it's a good game besides. Once you learn the homing attack and how to control the movement and momentum you can get around with great fun. The guns are fun, lots of the missions are fun to do, the music is great and diverse and so are the locales despite it being mostly city/industrial cores, they branch out on the concept well. The characters are fun, the aesthetic is a unique take on 2000s grit, and whether intentionally or not, the dialogue is all cheesy enough that it has the effect of being entertaining. 10 year olds are stupid enough to start saying damn because their cartoon hedgehog said it, I know, I was 10 or 11 or something, but that's what a parent/guardian is for, they tell them to clean up their mouth. They can do all that while still knowing the script is hammy and laughing along with it.

Ironically Ninja Theory’s original pitch for the reboot was actually closer to the original series, but Capcom said it wasn’t western enough and pushed them to make the reboot we actually ended getting. Though I am glad that DmC is more accepted nowadays, to a degree that DMC5 actually contains references to DmC, such as Dante’s alt colors being reboot Dante’s colors.
Keiji Inafune is truly the one to blame because he believed every Capcom game should be westernized. I'm so glad they fired that clown and look at what he developed after leaving Capcom lol.
DMC5 has DmC references, but it also has a scene blatantly mocking Tameem's attitude towards DMC fans. It seems Itsuno likes DmC but hates the attitude it was made with.

I do love how one of the biggest inspirations for Donte is Tyler Durden as to what a "cool" character should be. Great, so not only do they not get Dante, they don't get Fight Club either

People who miss the point of Fight Club always surprised and slightly scare me.
Thinking Tyler Durden is cool is to miss the whole point of the character.

Every somecallmejohnny DmC review is personalized.
A couple corrections to make about the beginning.
1. The original vision for DmC was actually a lot closer to mainline Devil May Cry, it was actually Capcom that pushed the reboot to be more and more its own thing, for better or for worse.
2. The Reboot wasn't actually because of poor sales for DMC 4, contrary to popular belief. As a matter of fact, DMC 4 was the highest selling game in the series until DMC 5. However, Capcom went through a phase of wanting to appeal more to a western audience, and they thought the best way to do that was by "Westernizing" their games. Ultimately, DMC felt too "Japanese" to them, so they threw everything away and tried starting over.
Inafune's westward push did a number on Capcom.
How exactly did DMC "feel too Japanese?" Aside from Vergil who you could argue is an Anime protag but at the same time he's too Chad to be that cringe.
@@googleisevil8958 The action scenes (specially DMC3) had ridiculous ones that are different from action scenes in the western (basically super cool but unrealistic as hell, no western movie has your main character shooting a pool ball into multiple enemies while you eat pizza)
@@googleisevil8958 Devil May Cry 4 didn't sell enough to Capcom high exceptions, and since Western games were selling more. Capcom thought oh our games aren't western enough.
Tbh, I think that's why they were so confident in turning dmc more western, they basically assumed fans will buy it just cause it still says DMC on it
I don't know if it's luck or anything else but it's rather impressive that Ninja Theory manage to survive this whole PR mess when almost every studio Capcom worked with during their western push (Blue Castle, Slant Six, GRIN...) didn't. Enslaved is a pretty good game by the way. It really feel like the kind of game Johny would play during a donator marathon. Have yet to play Hellblade tough.
11:43 Thank God this joke wasn't edited out. Still the hardest I've laughed in a while 😂
Unfortunately Johnny had to remove the part of it where limbo says "Get cucked" with shirtless Donte next to it. rip 😔
Honestly, everything about mainline Dante is WHY he’s so cool to begin with. The kind of man that is a doofus (and or have a gay cowboy moment /joke) without shame is going to be the coolest person in the room lol
Yeah don't want Dante to be a gay cowboy, but change his design to look like a emo twink instead, lol. As a gay guy he was actually more attractive looking to me, but less liked as a character for the game. They really didn't understand the audience they had?
The Spanish/Mexican El Donte dub and fan mod is amazing and saves this game's delivery.
Every action combo game needs a cumbia soundtrack
Dante doesnt get age restricted. Donte gets age restricted. a point against DmC
El Donte wouldnt get age restricted. Should have used the mod.
@@Future_Vantas It helps a lot. That mod. Spanish Dante would work a lot for a reboot imo
Is it bad that, even as someone who hasn't put much time into this series, I can absolutely hear "That wasn't very poggers of you, Dante" in Vergil's voice?
If Vergil's VA ever gets on Cameo I'm 100% paying him to say this

El Donte
@@charlieharrington9555 we stan El Donte El Exterminador de Demonios
To be fair that probably would have pissed off people even more
I remember playing DMC4 as my entrance to the series, taking one look at DmC and going “what even is this, rebooting it already?” And checked out for a long while.
Dang it! I would normally say “Ever get that feeling of déjà vu?”, but the start puts a damper on that.
I think the reason why people prefer Dante and Vergil from the main series than here is because they fall under the type of puzzle piece scenario. What I mean by that is viewers are able to put together a scenario of their character progression from moments in the stories and see how goes along. Like yes we don't see this kind of brother interaction between Dante and Vergil like we do in this game, but people have been at least get a closer look through the dialogue they exchange in the last act of 3, Dante trying to get Yamato back in 4 and all the moments between the brothers in 5. They do care for each other, even if they don't say or show us the actual signs. Sometimes a viewer can tell what a character's dynamic can be by listening to all of the dialogue really closely.
And that kind of storytelling just doesn’t work for some people which is why I prefer how DmC handles its story. I shouldn’t have to pull out my literary analysis skills to get things like the dynamics between the characters and the additional layers of their personalities. That stuff should be clear in the story.
@@jennifergriel861but think abput it. Im not saying that there shouldn't be games with crystal clear character dynamics, but should you REALLY not have to pull out your analysis skills?
@@carlosemilio5180 not just to understand the basic narrative of a hack and slash like DMC. People act like this series has such a deep narrative but if you only play the games (which is a perfectly reasonable thing to do) it’s not. I’m tired of people telling me that the series has so many layers if you read the mangas and listen to the audio dramas and that stuff is all there in the games if you just think more deeply about it and honestly I can’t help but think that people are just projecting any narrative complexity from the supplementary material and the spin-offs into the games when it’s just not there.
@@jennifergriel861 Okay, but then don't get on people's cases for liking this kind of analysis!
A neat thing about Definitive Edition is it also has a Hardcore setting that can be turned on that does some style and devil trigger balancing to the game that matches more to the original continuity games. A nice way for fans that still want to push for high style based on variety and to have DT be a bit less free while also letting the game still have it's initial options should players prefer that.
Yeah, I felt about the same playing the series in order. I think it ranks 3rd for me with DM5 and 3 above it.
My issues mostly are just on tone and story, more for it not being outright bad, but just trying too hard. Ironically I think my biggest example is not the usual suspects, but the scene of them at that park where all the graffiti is on the wall describing everything vergil is talking about for like 5 minutes straight, only for dante for sum the whole thing up in one sentence.
There are nuggets here and there to make something work, more than I can say for the stories of 1 2 and 4, but it didn't quite come together.
Now for the positives. Above all else, the level design and theming. Still the strongest in the entire series for me. I remember almost all the limbo environments and I actually want to look around for enjoy the environments this time thanks to this dante feeling like he can actually move through them properly and not "well he kind of can". And with the combat when you are fighting normal enemies I do think it has a fun albeit toned down usual dmc combat but still fun action game in its own right.I know that is still a major sticking point for some, that there isnt nearly as much combo depth…but…I can play the main campaign of DMC pretty fine and have done so a few times when I’m in the mood. Meanwhile I feel I always just give up on a 4 playthrough every time I try to do so. If I have more fun with one of them, that one wins for me. Its kind of that simple.
And I appericiate definitive edition going out of its way to really fix a lot of the issues people had with the game and even make them a toggle so people could play how they like. It feels like a lot more effort went into this instead of the usual, put in vergil and call it a day approach with the others.
I think in a post 5 world, its easier to see this as its own thing and judge it on its own merits. And I think its still worth it, I find myself going back to it more than 1 2 or 4.
Now that being said, your gonna have with 5. Your gonna have A LOT of fun with 5.
Agreed. It's less that it's outright "Bad" and more "It's trying too hard to be edgy or cool." And that's more obnoxious at times than bad.
I remember resenting the hell out of DmC as I thought this game would be the direction of the series moving forward and prior to 5 being announced, I personally thought the DMC series was just gone.
Now with 5 being the finale to the Sons of Sparda story and 2 no longer being the endpoint of the series' timeline, I don't hate DmC as much. I still dislike the game's story, writing, characters (except for Bob Barbas obviously) and tone but the enviroment and level design were decent while the gameplay is fine. On its own, it would be a perfectly decent character action game if it were not using the Devil May Cry IP.
Was the first DMC game I played which was why I always loved it honestly don't really care much for the story in any of them so it not doing much for me in DMC really didn't affect me at all. As not like the story to any of them besides 5 really did much for me outside of the character moments in 3 and 4. I terms of gameplay think it's my 2nd favorite although haven't played 3 in awhile so not sure if that would take 2nd or not. Just remember not enjoying 2 at all 1st game was fine but dated compared to everything else. 3 was great. DMC was great and like you said level designs are clearly the best in the series even the newer games like 4 and 5 are all pretty generic in terms of level it's all just generic city levels maybe some ruins and then generic hell looking levels.
Oh hey, a Johnny reupload, and rewatching Johnny is fun.
Once again, there is usually at least one game in a franchise that divides its fanbase, and this is no different.
Why did he reupload the video (Update. Nevermind. I know now)
@@Tsukiru My fault for neither watching the video. Nor looking at the community tab
Looking closely at DMC Dante's drawing in the thumbnail (good artstyle btw) I realize that the lines around him, apart from having a white color also have a little blue on the left and a little red on the right.
I think that's a reference to the fact that 'Donte' is a half angel, half demon hybrid and he uses light and dark weapons.
Props to the artist.
Man that sucks the original video got age-restricted
I honestly feel like Tameem’s view of what was cool then doesn’t apply today is true but his way of just added such tasteless and tacky thing to the reboot like adding the casual sex, drugs and other “cool” and edgy things. Many people that reboot or give their interpretation of classics always miss the mark on why the originals are charming. I remember the same thing happened with the gritty fan made power rangers short; people just add what they think is cool and mature and the end product just comes out looking too try-hard.
I'll never not find it hilarious how Saban looked at that Power Rangers fanfilm and used it for the basis of a reboot movie, only for it to fail miserably and never spoken of again.
Though I do say I liked how one of the Rangers from that movie made it into Battle for the Grid though. It shows how that game was a celebration of every aspect of the franchise, even the less popular parts.
As a classic fan, the fact DMC5 exists makes me more forgiving about the existence of this game. I think it's a decent action game with a story I don't really care for, but I wouldn't mind a sequel for this since Nero and co finally got the finale they deserved.
19:54 LMFAOOOO this part had me in tears
This game is one of the rare instances of “Good Game. Wrong IP”
12:30 i love how he already knew what was about to happen, and the "Fetus deletus" was the cherry on top
So in this game sparda is a guy who was taken and sent to hell captured and tortured forever. BUT bosses are still like "son of Sparta?" Where sparta is just some guy. You can tell where itsuno cane in for the scripting process jump in
14:14 There's 3 comics that serve as a prequel of the game which tell the story of how Vergil and Kat meet, in this story it is stated that he was basically fighting against the world alone, using his Devil Trigger corrupted him so much to the point he said that if he used it just one more time he would lose his humanity.
Vergil sent Kat to find Dante also as a sort of contingency plan in case he actually did. In the end, Dante defeated Vergil but was too late to save him, even the song that plays during the final battle says "for their eyes, kill me, spare me".
My headcanon likes to think Dante's mother is an angel in both games.
You handled the age restriction of your previous DMC video very well, Johnny. By the way, the combat in this game reminds me of a game called Valkyrie Drive Bhikkhuni.
Ah yes, Diablo Poder Llorar: Featuring Donté, el exterminador de demonios and Vergin, the breeze that is approaching.
It's easy to forget how Capcom's output felt borderline hostile to their fans in those days.
Can't stop laughing at the "that wasn't very poggers Dante" lmao
I was one of the people who watched the original video pre age restrictions of DmC DMC and I hope this video doesn’t get the age restriction it’s unlikely.
Great video already watched it.
Anyways as I was saying I hope after the mortal Kombat video is the return to final fantasy VIII IX and X
I always joke about DmC being a movie licensed game, but the movie was cancelled and they decided to use the script for the movie for the game instead.
With all the crap youtube puts content creator through, I'll gladly rewatch this video.
Respect to Johnny for actually doing research into why a good chunk of the fandom write this game off and not just brushing off the reasons why. If they didn't try to slap the DMC name on it or if they marketed it as a sub-series like Mega Man's various spin offs, the fans wouldn't have ripped it to shreds.
@@siberian4097 You're joking right? The Sonic community more reasonable than the DMC community? You're either trolling or haven't witnessed how stupid the Sonic fandom can get. Especially since the reaction from DMC fans was completely justified ultimately when the series was going to be replaced by a game that discards the identity of the series in an attempt to pander to an audience who didn't like DMC in the first place. Sonic fans on the other hand freaked out about Sonic Boom replacing the main series despite it being established that it would not, complained about the length of Sonic's quills or started flame wars with other fandom's over a Game Awards Poll.
And look, DmC is not the train wreck that the fandom wished it would be and it's fine to like it however claiming the naysayers are mentally incapable for not giving the game chance because you like it is shitty. It's one thing to judge a piece of media by its own merits but if this bold new direction is going to replace what came before and become the standard going forward, it should be compared to what came before and the reboot clearly didn't convince any of the original players at the time. And these same people have no reason to give it a fair go now. It's been a decade since it came out and why revisit a game from back then when newer stuff is coming out? Let alone if you even have the time to play as many games 10 years later.
Great video, but my favorite part was getting to see behind the scenes. Your notes were so detailed ,absolutely amazing!
Rewatching to you RUclips premium watch time. Like I said in my original post in the original video. I absolutely love your take on this version. It honestly is my favorite from a story perspective since it fully fleshes out the characters. Great video like always Johnny!
The way you utterly roasted Vergil had me dying laughing. I was losing it. 🤣
I'll say it again, please never feel nervous about giving your opinion on a game. You're ironically one of the least obnoxious game critics on this site.
I think dante in the original series had more development albeit more games. In 3 he wasnt really happy with what he was and was very guarded just masking it with jokes until he saw what lady has been going through and losing vergil at the end. Hes accepted yeah hes human and not just some monster. In dmc 1 after going through all his battles and confusion with triss he accepts his demon half. Dmc 2 we dont talk about, but dmc4 hes in a nice mentor role for nero but still messing with him as afterall hes dante hes rarely serious. Now dmc 5 that ups the characters tremendously for all the main cast and id say is the best game in the series. El donte hes too try hard for my liking and with what theyre trying to message its a bit hypocritical to be doing the samething in real life that your in game demons do. But the combat was fun not as good as 5 or 3 but still entertaining enough.
I desperately want a mod where limbo says "No bitches?"
I've said for a long time that this game is a solid and fun game to play. But it's biggest flaw is the Devil May Cry label. If they just renamed the characters and called the game something like "Nephilim: fall of limbo" it would've been better received

I love this game it’s glad to see someone who while still critical was completely fair to this game. And it’s just nice to see another fan of it alongside the original series. I love that Dante feels very balanced in several ways, a mix of Dante and Nero, light/ heavy weapons, and horizontal mobility. These things make him my favorite playable character. And I think Ninja Theory’s story and visual design are overlooked. This game did well improving some problems with the older games like tedious back and forth, rushed campaigns, and bad camera/ platforming. It’s a good combat game as always, but it’s a good game outside of that as well. And I really like that.
Enjoy playing through 5
Damn Johnny loved this game so much he played it twice
I think one of the biggest things that people especially original fans of the DMC franchise is that the Angelic and demonic thing where you have to hold triggers which yea makes you have pretzel hands which for people who do intense DMC Combos than the muscle memory gets fucked by Pretezlmorphisis.
Pretzelmorphosis is a fantastic word.
It wasn't terrible but it lost it's identity.
Some elements of this game were great, such as the environments and small elements of this game would inspire some stuff in DMC V.
It was a mistake this game was ever made but had it not been called DmC, it'd have been a passable action game.
With hindsight, it definitely helped reaffirm WHAT DMC's identity is.
So I don't actually hate this game, it ultimately is the reason we got DMC 5, a masterpiece of action gaming.
Aesthetically, I liked that this game went for a more punk rock-ish look. I thought it worked well as an alternate "origin" to OG Dante, who is _very_ "90's thrash metal" (the kind of guy who would walk down a sidewalk with shades and a giant boom box on his shoulder).
I actually kinda wish DmC pushed that "70's London" look further. It's a nice blend of colorful and gritty, and it meshes well, I think, to the game's anti-establishment story. I'm not saying I want Dante to run around with a giant green Mohawk, but I _am_ saying that I really like the potential art direction.
0:32 You managed to get by with your SGB review back in 2010, so I have full confidence
I absolutely adore this game. ESPECIALLY the music. I love the fuck out of the battle music.
Well, at least this is the earliest I've been to a Johnny video in a hot minute. I'd only ever heard of the Devil May Cry series but they look like a fun time through these reviews and comment sections.
The slug thing being the ingredient for Soda is literally ripped from Futurama and their whole thing with Slurm. Also I was a QA tester for this game and had to play it SO many times and still didn't end up hating it. It's pretty decent :)
Okay, let's do this one more time...
Ah yes, the "I'm one of the cool kids" period of Capcom.
Here for the algorithm

This game was so polarizing, it made Johnny reupload his review for it .
I'm sad I never got to see the original upload, but I'm glad it's back in some capacity regardless!
I didn't play the game until after beating DMC5, loving it, and getting into DMC3 and DMC4 and loving those too. As such, my opinion on it is one coming from a latecomer who already knew that DMC5 would go on to exist after this game. Under that context, I also found the game enjoyable. The story is goofy but generally nothing too bad and the gameplay is honestly pretty damn fun.
However, I can also understand how people must have felt under the context of this game being brand new. Imagine playing DMC4 as a fan of DMC3 and at least liking it if not loving it, only for Capcom to ditch that storyline and make this instead of a sequel. I prefer the storyline of the original series any day, so I can very much empathize with the fear that this was going to be the series from now on and we wouldn't get any more games in the original continuity. Under that perspective, I can see where people were coming from being so harsh on the game, and the relative love the game is starting to get in a post-DMC5 world also makes a lot of sense.
Generally speaking, the game is a pretty harmless standalone adventure telling a completely original story unrelated to the main series. For those thinking of trying it, just think of it as an edgy spinoff taking place in an alternate universe. The gameplay is the real star of the show in this one, the combo system feels fantastic to get good with and the sense of flow is phenomenal. Dante acts and plays like the main series Dante and Nero did a DBZ Fusion Dance, and it works way better than it has any right to.
I appreciate that while you liked the game, you tried to see things from the mindset of the 2010s of a Devil May Cry fan who had been playing the game since the beginning or DMC3 in the 2000s. Feelings on this game have softened since the fans got a proper Devil May Cry game follow up for sure but at the time, it was understandable why the fans were annoyed of this.
The Dante / Virgil boss fights was one of my top fav fights in the DMC series for sure here
This was my first dmc game, and I had a great time. I see why old fans were mad, but the game is genuinely well made.
Algorithm this, RUclips that, blah blah blah. Been loving the DMC marathon, I find John's take on the reboot really refreshing. It's cool to see somebody who isn't super invested in the franchise trying this one out and having fun with this game / enjoying it for what it is. I have a buddy whose only experience with Devil May Cry was this title and a small chunk of the first game, he said more or less what Johnny said. It's fun, Limbo looks cool, etc. Fantastic work as usual, here's to hoping the algorithm pushes this video out to more people. Good luck, king.
I'll always say it had this been a new IP it would've had a better reception. Hell I'd still like to see the original vision of the more somber and haunting vibe they were going for in the teaser. The haphazard shifting of gears after the initial reception did not work for this games narrative.
Watched the OG upload during what I thought was my last shift at work. Watching the RE-upload during my ACTUAL last shift😭
I feel like this game promoted itself in all the worst ways possible that it gave fans such a negative impression, that even when it didi come out and be an pretty fun, the stigma stuck with it and still never went away
Way late, but I remember being there back in the day when every other day some writer from IGN or Kotaku would put in their two cents to bash fans for being put off by the new direction, and they really are as much a part of the game getting ripped to shreds as the new direction itself.
Here again for the rewatch! Hope it doesn't get slapped again xP
For a fun bit of trivia, Vergil in this game is voiced/mocapped by David de Lautour, who's another Power Ranger alumni! Specifically, he's RJ, the mentor from Jungle Fury who's also the Violet Wolf Ranger. Incidentially, one of my fave seasons of PR and a pretty handsome guy to boot! So even if the game is decisive amongst people over whether or not it can count as a DMC game, it's still got that Power Ranger rep in there lol
From the moment Johnny started this marathon, _this_ was the review I was waiting for, especially after hearing that he had little, if any, prior experience with the franchise prior to starting this marathon and, thus, didn't have decades of calcified fanboy nostalgia making it harder to see clearly. I was curious to see where he'd eventually come down it, since I figured he wouldn't just blindly follow the consensus
At the time I played it, it was the _only_ DMC game I'd even played, as most of them weren't on PC (the only platform I own), and being a reboot, it seemed like as good a place to try to jump on as any... and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. It didn't become an all-time favorite. I only played through it the one time, and haven't gone back to it since, unlike say Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, which I have revisited at least one or two times since my initial run. But at the same time, there was no point in that one run where I felt like I was forcing myself to keep playing or thinking about all of the better ways I could be spending my time. I enjoyed my time with the game from start to finish!
Perhaps it's because I tend to spend more time with strategy and tactics games (XCOM & XCOM 2 are the most-played games in my Steam library for a reason), but I even appreciated the whole angel/devil mechanic. Sure it tripped me up, but it _also_ forced me to actually stop and _think_ about what I was doing... to _plan_ my attacks, rather than just mindlessly button-mashing my way to victory. It's the same reason I appreciate the combat in the Arkham games. Sure you _can_ simply button-mash your way through those games, but if you want to keep your combo going and truly feel like Batman, you need to be scanning the battlefield, picking out the most urgent target of the moment, and figuring out how you're going to deal with it. You need to be thinking at least two or three steps ahead or some punk will get a lucky shot in, breaking your chain. Once it clicks, it gets to be a bit like Holmes's fights in the RDJ movies.
Was DMC a perfect game? Hell no! Obviously not... but I always felt the game got _WAAAAY_ more crap than it deserved simply because it wasn't the game fans wanted. As someone who didn't have any of that baggage, it was a perfectly enjoyable game. It wasn't even merely serviceable. It's a genuinely _good_ game... one of the _better_ examples in a genre that's incredibly easy to screw up. But it isn't the best, and it fell short of the masterpiece fans had built the franchise up to be, and so it was immediately relegated to the dustbin of history... rather unfairly, in my opinion.
I'm glad to see that Johnny enjoyed his time with it, as well!
This video was so good he uploaded it a second time!
I'm still watching every johnny vs no matter what!!!
18:00
Honestly, the joke got a chuckle out of me mainly because of how that segment ended
RUclips couldn’t take the tomfoolery Johnny was talking about with DMC
RUclips: That wasn't very poggers Johnny
Missed opportunity to call this vid the special edition
Vergil's scream sounds at 23:22 like Steve Carell from Bruce Almighty.
I've had this game on my shelf for a few years, and I think this video has made me wanna check it out.
It's fun, the combat is great, I'd argue it's the best combat in the franchise, but the fanboys will scream, even though I know how to combo cancel, jump guard and do all the advanced mechanics in the older games.
I think DMC 3 is my personal favorite of the original series. I haven't played DMC 5 in a while, the hype for DMC 5 kind of fizzled out fast. DMC 5 is still a fantastic game though.
7:46 I’ve been traveling on this road too long, just tryin to find my way back home, but the old me is DEAD AND GONE, DEeead and GOONE
I can't say I'm fond of the redesigns and writing, but the art direction in the levels is pretty damn good. I'd even argue that the level aesthetics are better than the main series. But messing up Vergil (in lore and gameplay) is absolutely unforgivable.
messed him so bad that 5 stole his backstory and made 3 the biggest plot hole in the series?
@@souljagod420 Methinks you do not know what plothole means 😂
@@truefenriz dmc5 states the reason vergil summoned the tower in dmc3 was because he was weaker than dante but in the prequel manga and in mission 7 we see vergil stomp dante 2-0 meaning he was stronger and never needed to summon the tower to begin with which was the whole plot of dmc3
@@souljagod420 In 5, Vergil was weaker than Dante before he split himself in two. Vergil was dying after all and only upon eating the Qliphoth fruit, did Vergil gain power that matched Dante's power. Also, seeing as Vergil was turned into Nelo Angelo in 1 and was supposed to be dead in 2 and 4 compared to Dante who was actively fighting demons post-DMC 3 and growing stronger (shown by how easily he handles demons in 2 and 4 as compared to 3 and 1), Dante already was the stronger twin by then.
Also, I think you are misunderstanding the story of 3. Prior to 3, we see that Vergil is definitely stronger than Dante because while Vergil accepted his demonic heritage, Dante refused to accept it which made him the weaker twin. 3 is Dante's journey in accepting his demonic heritage and his role as a protector of the Human World in which he grows stronger throughout his various battles in 3 while holding onto his humanity whereas Vergil does not grow. Vergil stayed the same in terms of power (he only picked up two new Devil Arms vs Dante's larger variety which he got by defeating various demons) which led to Dante overcoming Vergil by becoming the stronger twin at the end. You can see this by how Dante lost the first fight, fought to a standstill in the second and finally, won the third fight.
So, it isn't a plothole that Dante became the stronger twin while starting out as the weaker twin. Chronologically, it makes sense following the established timeline of 3, 1, 2, 4 and 5.
@@truefenriz i understand the story. tell me what was vergils motivation for summoning the tower in dmc3. because according to what is literally said in 5 is that he wanted to beat dante but he already did prior to dmc3 and therefore had no reason for the tower to begin with. that is the plothole. why does the story even happen in 3 if vergil's lifelong goal is achieved before the game even starts
I heavily love the rebooted video fake out in the begging as it goes well with this title being a reboot in itself.
I honestly fully respect your opinion on this game, always appreciate you standing by your takes always; great review, can't wait for the DMC 5 review
Lmao I saw this was like "Didn't I see this yesterday?" And briefly thought I entered a groundhogs day type situtation
DmC was a decent, even cool game that was made at the wrong time, and possibly by some of the wrong people
Lots of cool stuff about it, but the attitudes and trends of the time really just killed it in the cradle. Its the epitome of a series going through an wakward teen phase
But thats okay, because its influence on 5 is apparent and I'm glad Capcom didn't course correct too hard by disregarding it completely, even when they decided that they would follow up on DMC4 for the series big comeback
3:17 Really? I thought the earlier Devil May Cry games had the dark and gritty themes?
I don't think most people these days have even played DMC1 or 2
No they did not.
@@Professor_Genki7 Thats the sad thing about the reboot if you ignore the story problems, it's better than 1&2. Probably not as good as 3???
You have to keep in mind the period of the now and then, with DMC5 release, DmC:DmC hate lessened a lot due to that.
But before that, it was a different reception since DmC:DmC was possibly the last time the series would've been touched and would (At the time) go forward with that. Combined with the director and media attitude, alongside the game being a slight downgrade. OG fans was pissed is putting it lightly.
At this point, I'm starting to think that any alternate costume you see in any game is a cosplay in your eyes
I'm glad you spoke your mind about liking the game rather than toning it down to please fans! I still don't think I can agree with liking the story, but that ultimately comes down to personal taste (and besides, I'm one of the people who think Dante's dour mood in 1 and 2 is a genuine [unintentional] character arc about becoming hardened after repeatedly fucking up in 3 and then lightening up after meeting Nero, so what do I know about good storytelling) but I can definitely agree with the combat, even if its a bit more mindless than some of the others, its a lot of fun! definitely more enjoyable than 1 or 2, and with much better platforming than any of the others. That being said, I can't really say I'm disappointed this version of the series didn't go any further, I still can't find myself enjoying the characters or world, and I still prefer the gameplay of most of the other games. Ultimately, I think the game's biggest mistake was just being called Devil May Cry, while we can look back at it now as its own thing, at the time this was meant to be the future of the series, and I can't say I'd be happy with that. I think that if it had been its own thing, it would be far more fondly remembered as a fun character action game, rather than the game that almost destroyed a franchise. I hope you enjoy 5! Probably my favorite game in the series
I don't know if you know this, but Hardcore mode (Definitive Edition exclusive) fixes the Devil Trigger issue. I believe it also changes the rank system to be more in line with the previous games, where you have to vary your attacks.
DMC Dante: My name is Dante
OG Dante: Hmmm...
How do you feel about parties getting crazy?
DMC Dante: Uh..What?
OG Dante: Son, I am dissapoint
Edit: Yeah, I am not a fan of 'DMC Dante', one of my least favorite main protagonist in gaming.
I prefer deadpan Dante from Devil May Cry 2 over him
So... it was the pizza covering the taint shot that YT took issue with?
As someone who played through the first 3 games on PS2 (at the time I didn't play 4 yet) when this game came out I gave it an honest try, but I had a lot of problems with the progression and the fact that it seemed like the game just threw weapons at you at a break neck pace. Like it would have been ok if, not do what the previous games did where the weapons were locked behind a boss. Just make it a story beat for every weapon instead of "Good job you did nothing heres a scythe". I'm happy you like the story, and maybe I'm a fan of Power Rangers type camp to the point that I will say Bayonetta was the superior game over this one. glad you saw something in it it's certainly a take lol
12:44 I’m SO glad that this didn’t get taken out.
The game that introduced gamers to the “Boomers Are Ruining Society!” Trope
Persona 5 did this trope better
