Buying Pre War Cards vs 1950s Rookies, If The MLB Made The Right Decision, And The Hobby's Future!!

  • In case you missed it, Major League Baseball recently decided to include stats from the Negro Leagues, and it has significantly changed who holds some of the most important records of all time. Baseball has always worked hard to protect their record books, allowing very little changes to the game, to ensure the integrity of statistics and all time records. Recently, they made a significant change to the landscape, and many people disagree about the results. Other questions this week go into the future of the hobby, collecting quantity vs quality, and the future of pre war cards vs 1950s vintage baseball cards. We talk about players like Babe Ruth, Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Ty Cobb, and many more. If you have a question for an upcoming episode, don't hesitate to ask it in the comments of this video!!

Hi Graig. To highlight a part you mentioned in the future of the hobby conversation I would like to add that i would like to emphasize the point that the RUclipsrs and other social media people are not the majority of collectors. Meaning please don’t judge the state of the hobby based on just the most viewed videos. In so many examples in our lives the ones the get the most attention doesn’t necessarily speak for the majority. I think there are flippers and there are mostly collectors. I mean there has to be more collectors than flippers since the demand for cards are high. My 2 cents

“Do we think that George Gibson’s slugging percentage would’ve been higher if he had the same sample size as Ruth.” That is actually why I like the integration of the stats. Yes, I agree that the AB’s and games are not comparable, but now we can talk about that. Now young fans can learn more about Negro League players while learning about MLB stars at the same time. The integration allows fans to learn about how the different stats work and, most importantly, how some Negro Leagues players could have done if they had been allowed to play longer and in the MLB. Yes, we will always have to talk about the difference in size samples, but that should be fine. We also always have to talk about difference in time periods and all that. But the integration acknowledges Negro Players and allows fans to learn in more than one way about baseball, stats, and history.

Willie Mays hit 1 homer in 1948 and they didn't count it.... YET He now has 661 homers. Everyone is still getting At Bats. I heard Cobb will have ACL injury and miss the year. His prices will plummet. Good time to Buy maybe? Ruth missed 3 months with Hurt Feelings and was placed on the D/L. They did find 6 more box scores for Josh Gibson and 30 more for Oscar Charleston. Charleston had a good run as he hit 50 more homers in the 30 games, I heard. He was Willie Mays before Willie mays. He's a strong buy.

Excellent response of the Negro League records question. You handled a touchy subject excellently. Don't risk cracking the high quality cards for autos!!!! I cracked a 1976 Topps Nolan Ryan in a PSA 7 to get autographed. The card got a little nick in the edge. Now it'll likely regrade a 4. Between risk of damage and/or PSA inconsistency, its not worth the risk on high value cards. You're a time management stud...

I think two things can be true at the same time. We can recognize the greatness of a pretty fair number of players from the negro leagues while still accepting that the competition they faced wasnt the same as it would have been in the major leagues. I would equate the talent level overall as pretty close to AAA ball. If we now count stats from another league, why are we not counting minor league stats or Japanese and South American leagues stats? is the competition less in those leagues even though a large number of those players manage to reach the majors? How about we crown Ichiro as the all-time hits leader? or Sadihiro Oh as the new home run king?

Go to some dealer's dollar box and get a nice card of the player who's signing (assuming you didn't bring one from home) and then have PSA slab that, with a card grade or without. Graig, you didn't mention my question from last week about Roger Craig not being in the Hall of Fame and I read your thoughtful reply why you didn't and I completely understand why you didn't highlight it. So this week I am wording my question differently to possibly get you to discuss this topic. Here is the new Football question: Why are players like Roger Craig, Jim Marshall, Joe Jacoby, L.C. Greenwood, Steve Smith Sr., Clay Matthews, Lester Hayes, and Ken Anderson not in the Hall of Fame, when there are so many who are in that are less deserving than these players? I understand that the Sports Writers are the voters and that may need to change. Why not let the living Hall of Famer Players Vote in who they think deserves to be in there? Wouldn't current Hall of Famers know best who is deserving of being inducted? Just like to hear your thoughts on the snubbed players and the voting process.

I responded to you in the comments. I don't think there are a ton of people who are as passionate about Roger Craig as we are. So, I felt like it was best to respond to you directly. Roger Craig was the heart and soul of the 49ers west coast offense and changed the way Running Backs are used. He 100% should be in the HOF. He's also a hall of fame person. He still signs autographs through the mail and is a terrific guy. Because of his smaller size, he didn't rack up the career numbers that some RBs did, but he is a player that I believe should absolutely be in the HOF.

Your argument though makes sense and we cannot go back in time to change separate but equal Just seeing how baseball changed as black players were introduced into the majors showed that pure white baseball stats are inadequate. I think you can extrapolate from the gathered information and baseball was correct in adding Negro League stats to Major League baseball. That was a great evaluation on what to buy if investing as all the cards the gentleman pursued were iconic. I just wish I had that money to spend to make such a decision.

Although I couldn't be a bigger supporter of the Negro League, it's players and impact it had on the overall history of the game, I cannot come to terms with the statistics being included in the MLB statistical rankings. I have a few reasons (sample size being one) which would take too much time to type here but will love these conversations all summer long with friends and coworkers. Its does sound and feel contradictory to say we want and appreciate having Negro League history woven into the history of MLB but don't recognize their statistics as part of the official rankings. On the Negro Leagues merger of stats, a major point to keep in mind is that there were 10x more white people in America in the 1920's-1940's than black people. The talent was FAR deeper in Major League baseball due to that, even if we account for the fact that a higher percentage of those black people would have been good enough to play high level baseball than their white counterparts (based on what we see with today's sports). The difference in total teams between leagues doesn't make up for this fact either. So overall, I definitely believe the stats were easier to get in the Negro Leagues based on the average player in that league.
