- 2024 Topps Series 2 is here and we want to let you know if we think you should buy any of this product. In this video we discuss the rookies, the short prints, the new 4th Of July Parallels, and more.
I absolutely DETEST the fact that they get SPs then a true rookie in update. I do like the homage to the Billy Ripken FF with the Holiday card

They did same thing in 22 Series 2 with Witt and Julio

In 2022 the good update parallels (blacks) and SSP for Witt and Julio far outsell the series 2 cards.
Same will probably happen with the 2024’s.
That Jackson card is straight up MAD TV status

I won’t rio any flagship - the odds are just too astronomical - but I’ll pick up a few SSP and maybe a black parallel.
Also, theres 8 Holliday SSP listed already but some have the black box error feature and the white out as well as the fun face. So theres all 3 different types of errors plus a regular SP with him batting like the others
Chris here - a saw cut variation surfaced yesterday too!
It’s a cool idea and while I wish it was just the Fun Face card and was extremely short printed, making more of the card will sell more product, which is more important to topps. So I get why they did it it this way.
I know everyone is losing their minds over the Holliday " Billy Ripken Rip off " and apparently all the variations of it but I find myself in the call me unimpressed camp. I think the regular base SP where he is hitting has much more eye appeal to it.
Chris here - maybe it’s an age thing? As a collector in the late 80’s, that Ripken card was the biggest deal in the hobby for a long time!
I’m really interested in these Holliday cards because of the nostalgia factor. It’s a great call back. Just curious how rare they’ll actually be.
Tha said, his SP hitting image is a great shot.
As a Brewers fan who has been clamoring for a great rookie, I'll gladly pay for the Chourio SP, but not nearly for the price of Acuna bat down where he's at here at release. When 2022 Update came out, it felt like Series 2 and Chrome SP's that year were basically irrelevant, making me feel like it will be similar this year, unless the images are phenomenal.
Chris here - I think you’re exactly right.
The only way the series 2 “SP” has real staying power and lasting value is if Chourio doesn’t have a base card in update. (This is what topps did for Harper in 2012)
But that’s unlikely.
Personally I’d wait for update and Target a black parallel or his SSP.

3:00 minute Philmington puts the hammer down. Flagship is basically ruined. 2018 was the last time flagship was done really well. SP's and SSP's with just the Batdown and Torres horizontal as something unique. Parallels were amazing. Also Acuna and Torres were hot names who were not on the OD roster from memory. All the guys in 2022 who got SP's were on the OD roster and should have had their true RC's in S2 and just RD's in Update. Last year they paused but now they are doing 2022 all over again and with 3 guys who have less hype. It's messy. 1stBowman auto is the answer.
Chris here - more and more I agree with your last sentence. Players now have hundreds if not thousands of different rookie cards - counting inserts and parallels.
But only one set has their first bowman chrome autograph.
I have a feeling that the Holliday will be over produced because there is already 10 or so on eBay and the product has;t officially released yet. It looks there is also a standard Holliday SP card similar to Merrell, Chourio and Langford
Chris here - I’m a little bummed with how frequently these Hollidays are getting hit.
Maybe the scribble and black box are more rare? Time will tell.
As a collector, I am interested in the Chourio SP. But I will probably just buy one as opposed to buy a few boxes (no interesting parallels). I will get boxes of Update. I do agree with you, the parallels will be the ones to really collect (black, gold, independence day (because of this year's design), golden mirror, and the team logo border).

aquas - 3500 per card.
Yellows - 2700 per card

I'd be willing to bet these freaking Ssps fall in the ballpark of 2000 as a print run. Considering holliday now you have multiple variations x 2000k each. Christ why bother calling it even an SP
If these fall into blasters this year you better bet that there's upwards of 3k printed especially if Julio's 2022 S2 have 2k gone through PSA all bets are offffffffff
J-Rod. ~ 70 games ~ 11 extra base hits~ makes Acuna's abbreviated season look like a Rembrandt.
It’s been absolutely brutal.

The price of the auto isn't the point. If I buy Series 2 Baseball, I want the auto to be a baseball player. Call me crazy.

That Holliday looks more like a Golden Mirror than the base card...
Chris here - it’s neither. We don’t know how rare it will be No idea on print runs. Not yet.
They do it this way because it gives plenty to talk about. Topps and Fanatics want as many people to be talking about cards as possible. If you look at it from that lens, this consistent inconsistency makes a lot more sense.
Chris here - this l is exactly why they made so many Holliday rookies. They’re everywhere now and people are talking about them and buying up boxes. It worked for topps. Sadly, it means these fun Ripken style cards will have very limited value going forward.
But it’s selling the product now!

@SpitballinCards I agree with you wholeheartedly Chris! I'm having a hard time forming an opinion because I think there are good and bad points for both investors and collectors with this business MO but it rubs me the wrong way given that I know Topps is doing it for sales and not to better the hobby. At the end of the day, giving the collector more cards to collect and more opportunities to collect should be what is best for the hobby. But that sure makes it hard for anybody other than some of the most knowledgeable to wade these waters and make smart choices.

I ripped a Jumbo of 2024 S1 for $180USD~ and it was such a waste of money. Only 1 rookie parallel worth maybe $2 and an Austin Wells RC on card auto which is far from the worst, but essentially still $150 flushed away. I am not ripping flagship ever again unless the prices drop significantly. Wax is still far too high in relation to what singles go for. $55 for hobby and $90 for jumbo would be the go. I'm inching ever closer to not opening wax period.
This is all 100% right! Odds of your box not being a waste if money are slim to none!

Up a few of the Fanatics exclusive blasters just to rip for fun. Probably be the extent of my buying for S2

Series 2 was a welcome surprise this year. Profited from my case in a few days and only hit one 3 figure card. 🎉

@@SpitballinCards Typically S2 is nothing to write home about but this year was much better than expected. Especially if you were listening to the doom sayers from social media before release. Of course, i buy to flip vs collect. It makes a big difference. I suspect if i was a collector I might not be smiling like i am now.
Nice discussion. I don't necessarily mind the Swanson soccer auto, etc. I wouldn't be as excited to open it but at least can probably get your $ back on the box. I pulled an Adam Lefkoe auto, currently does a Podcast with Shaq I think, out of last years A&G and it sold for more than an Aaron Judge Lets Go #/50 and a Luke Weaver Saphirre Superfractor 1/1 😂 Appreciate the content on this channel.

Chris here - honestly, it’s the sticker that bothers me more than the soccer player!
It looks as if 697 Jackson Holliday (Batting) is a SP and (Fun Face) is a SSP. 698, 699 and 700 - Jackson Merrill, Wyatt Langford and Jackson Chourio have only appeared on Topps Ripped. Until pricing is established on eBay…the Rookie SPs are total unknowns. A month from now, the Market will decide if Fanatics did the right thing to increase Sales of 2024 Topps Series 2. 🤓⚾️

I bought into a random team 1/2 jumbo and half hobby case. I got a Jackson Merrill Rookie Autograph to 199 and a Tatis Mojo Gold auto to 50. Not bad for $41 buy in. I may rip a few hangers but thats it. I want to see how much logofractor will be this year.

Is there really not room for both the SP and Update Rookie? I really enjoyed the 2022 SPs and then getting the Update cards. Though I’m someone who has zero interest in Chrome or Bowman so maybe I’m just weird lol.
Chris here - the supply of cards will keep the prices reasonable.
The 2022 series 2 Witt and JRod SP’s are both around $200.
The update SSP however are much pricier.

Every year we get:
Topps series 1
Topps series 2
Topps update
Topps Chrome
Topps Chrome update
All different and come in separate packs and boxes.
The sheer level of gimmicks is getting to be a lot. Id rather they put a few fully baked ideas in than 20 half baked ones. Take the time to get Wemby on card, promote the Holliday appropriately, get more than two first pitch cards, etc.
Also i hate the idea that we would want the Holiday to be a USP... Don't we want people to have fun, cool, good cards without paying four figures?
Chris here - I agree with you the first pitch autos. Could be cool with a bigger checklist and on card autos. Lots of celebrities throw out first pitches!

Nope. More gimmicks. They made Holliday look like Alfred Newman from Mad Magazine 😂. Update should be loaded. I wont chase SPs that are crappy odds. I'll get Chrome for MVP buybacks and Chrome Update for all the key rookies
Chris here - as print runs increase your odds in every product are crappy! Sad but true. Don’t rip, just buy the card you want!

Very disappointed in the ohtani gold mirror ssp, I think Topps is getting lazy. They could have added an action photo from spring training or anything else other than his dodgers media announcement which they already did in Topps now. Two thumbs down for series 2

The Ripken FF card is not particularly rare. There are over 15,000 graded at PSA. Rarest Ripken is the White Scribble with only 130 or so at PSA - so maybe the Holliday will be the same?

Odds are unlisted but there are many, many copies on eBay at this point.
Save your money for Topps Chrome.
