Wow, Vic, this is a great vlog!! You are just such a good presenter - as is Joanne, of course. I, a non-boater, found the information SO useful (in my non-boaty brain, that is).
And I received my copy of the BEAUTIFUL recipe book last Saturday! Full marks to whoever your galley slave is (you know, that gorgeous lass, wot cooks cakes now and again).
Very well done to you both, you for this vlog and Jo, for all she did, putting her heart and soul into the book!

Can’t add to all the superlative comments left by my fellow commentators that would better say what they have said. As I sit here in rainy Essex, with Jo’s beautiful book on my knee, drinking coffee from my Holly The Boat Cafe mug, I give thanks to the day I first watched your first video and became hooked. You are all three definitely part of our family now!

Wow just wow. We've watched you every week since we binge watched the first few we hadn't previously been aware of. Your level of editing and presentation has improved dramatically until this one....... It's actually blown all your previous stuff out of the water. Absolutely un-pausible‽.... Worthy of an approach to Amazon and mainstream TV in our opinion. Sorry for the long message but having been boating and building a boat we can say that your advice in this episode is golden. Thanks.

That's because they are too expensive to retro-fit, so those without have to diss them because they will never have one. 😃😃
I use mine every day, great for reversing over big gaps to get water etc. as most boats pull to one side going backwards. ☺

But you are always smiling and positive.

Too true and well said! Every potential narrowboat purchaser should watch it. I particularly enjoyed the cold tea and candle shot. To me, narrowboating is a way to step back to a simpler way of living with less mod cons, a sort of waterborne Good Life.

  • @Idle-Days
    @Idle-Days Год назад +16

Well done, your best yet. As a couple who flogged their brick pile and moved afloat on Idle Days a couple of years back we agree with all of your comments except that regarding the Bow Thruster, we wouldn't be without ours when reversing into our parking bay in Crick Marina. Perfectly possible to do it without one but so much easier with it. It was hard work getting rid of 50 years of accumulated junk when we sold our house but it seems we didn't need it since haven't missed any of it.

Hi Vic & Jo, Just to say we have been waiting with baited breath for the arrival of the cook book. WOW, WOW & WOW it arrived on Saturday morning and we have had a good browse through it already. You weren't exaggerating, the book is a masterpiece such high quality and once we have fully digested it, it will have pride of place on the bookshelf. Love the recipies, of course, and we are already planning which ones we will try first. Massive congratulations Jo for a magnificent book and the energy and drive you have shown in producing it. Can I put my name down for book 2??? !!! Anyone reading this who has not bought the book, go on I promise you will not be disspointed.

I've never lived on the canals but I have lived on seagoing sailing boats.
I agree with just about all of this though.
IMO the most salient advice is "Bigger is not always better" and "If in doubt, do without"
I like a simple stress free, and low cost life. Obviously other people will be different.
Your first boat is unlikely to be your last because you learn what is important to you.

Firstly I've had an email informing me my Cake Making Encyclopedic Hard Bound instruction manual is on the way to Australia......Good OnYa Sonia and Let's Go Joe....to name a few Aussie sayings. My bag of self raising flour wont be out of date to use after all.
OK now, down to it........I've watched Narra' Boat vloggers for many years. It started with Foxes Afloat who now think they are bigger stars than they actually are and who now have sadly turned into babbling fools since coming out of the water, to be honest they were close to being babbling fools in the water. All have come up with lists of do's and don'ts of one sort or another. Some good, some bad.
Today I witnessed true brilliance on how to list Narra' Boatin' stuff. Never have I enjoyed a Narra' Boat Vlog as much as this one. I commend you on your faultless and sometimes comedic babblings and shear effortless and superb editing. Don't think your editing efforts went un-missed with things getting smaller and buildings shrinking. Thanks for the smile of my face today but it does put me in good stead to watch "The Narra' Boat Pirate" ........I missed not seeing the Wife or William but I'll cope, never you worry. THANKS.

Great Job Vic! When I see a working boat (online) I remind myself that whole families used to live on the boat (at least sleep) and they had a few amenities. When I used to take my family camping, I'd start with: "So we are going to sleep in the open, no sleeping bags, no electricity." They would then be grateful for a tent, a bag, and a solar panel. I imagine narrow-boating the same way. Someday the wife and I will take a holiday to Merry Old England and hopefully spend a week on a rental. D & J, TN, USA

#6 is the most important bit of advice for any potential boat or home owner. I have been looking outside of California for a new home for myself....." just myself unfortunately." Everyone has an idea of where I should buy and why. While others say rent before you buy. All of it has been great advice for them, just not for me. I guess it's like buying anything, you take in all this great information and advice, then chuck it out the window. Stop close your eyes and imagine yourself standing there, now where is there?

Nice informative video. Well done. Your right about the listening. There are so many people willing to add there two pence worth. Do your own research I think is the key. As for the bow thruster , yes you make a very valid point about the sediment, to that I would say . If buying or building make a point to double the wall and weld thickness. If used and you want to keep it plan for an upgrade. Personally as a single hander bow and stern for me. Anyway again good video keep it going and be safe.

Wow Vic, I can see why this vlog took some time, twas well worth waiting for, we loved it and you cheered our chilly soggy day in NZ. Very creative!! The advice would mostly applicable to tiny house living too! (Which I used to do!). Best wishes to you from NZ!

Brilliant Vic! I was sad when it ended. Never owned a narrow boat but my father was a yachtsman and turned me off yachts with his very very strong opinions. I think that’s why I live in the desert now😅

Loved it. And you're right, our bow thruster stopped working earlier this year and we are managing just fine without it - wish id never had one fitted.

You are tremendously clever...AND with Substance (your wife is, as well). Whatever the two of you may be teaching us or sharing with us, it's always done with humor, honesty, intelligence and a wonderfully funky bent. Just love your work. Blessings from Chicago! 💞
