A brutally honest Q&A: We get deep about some stuff we don't normally discuss

- Another baby? A land cafe? What's the worst thing about living on a narrowboat? What does Vic do in his office all day?
Thanks so much to everyone who asked us a question; we had some really good ones that we didn't get round to this time but we really appreciate you all taking the time to wonder, ask or just watch.
x
William will remember his dad coming back with pizzas tied to his bike with a piece of rope. What a great childhood you're both giving him.
I think Jo is a great mum… also a grafter… Vic comes across sensible and dedicated… if what we see on here is “real” and not just for RUclips then you both make great parents and appear decent human beings..
Someone might want to note that here in USA English 'grafter' has a bit of a different meaning than in UK English. Funny how much vocabulary difference there is between English and English.
@@scottfw7169 Isn't that the word Grifter
Yes!! pants and trousers for example. 😅
@@geraintjones403 The 2 words are similar yet different in US English. Also, in probably both Englishes, there is a grafter knife gardening and orchard tool.
A "grafter" in English and Hiberno-English is someone who puts their heart and soul into doing things well. Both Vic and Jo are grafters and also really nice humans.
I enjoyed your Q & A thanks! Changing the scenery for the questions and answers kept it much more interesting than most channels who sit in the same spot the whole time and go on and on with their answers. You kept it short and sweet and honest. Appreciated. Love your channel. ❤
@hennym5674 . Totally agree with you 💯 . Well said !.
I'd just like to say that you guys are such genuinely lovely, inspiring people, and your videos bring real joy. Thankyou 🙏
Watching you interact together and as a family is like being on the receiving end of a big hug ❤. Thank you for making this lonely old lady smile with the simple pleasure of YOU. 😊
Couldn't agree more. So sorry you feel lonely. I hope you find a way to reach out and connect.
Hear hear!
Here is a hug from me🤗
Nice Q&A. Fantastic editing. Delicious haircut, coffee & cakes. Delightful boy.
A little schooling advice from a fellow parent (she's now 15, born in Lancaster, UK) who has regrets: 🤔
William is currently still very much in the "nature" part of his life - un-self-possessed, just free & safe in his environment to play & learn at will. Primary school (age 4-10) is great & gentle for teaching them how to deal with other people, share, discover & learn the basics. However, secondary school is violent in every way; they deal with people from different backgrounds, beliefs, biases & attitudes; peer pressure is overwhelming & frightening. Consequently their education can be waylaid & it's the teachers & other pupils that "nurture" your child.
I would highly recommend working your backsides off while William is at primary school, then taking off with him, around the world, schooling him online (there's lots available) & encouraging him to form his own opinions about others through travel & adventure.
Totally agree. Home/world-schooling is the best education a teen could get.
Yes, I'm a firm believer in homeschooling. I pray God gives you another baby, too.❤
Agree! Homeschooling is the way forward! Online resources and allowing the child to be fully immersed in their interests for as long as they like before moving on. Ken Robinsons thoughts on education were so true.
Also, homeschool children aren’t lonely, they just get to choose and thrive within their own friendship groups chosen by themselves.
@@debgwilliam8756 Yes, choosing your child's influences is very important. Homeschooling eliminates bullies and badies.
The 10 year plan might have a teenage William and the Twins in their Tweens. It will be great for William to be able to share with his younger brother and sister widebeam boat life on Zero and Holly.
Really lovely Q and A. It looked so natural, but I know it took thought and hard work editing to look like that! You are both very honest hard working people, who take care with all you do. Thanks for sharing some of the ups and downs with us virtual narrow boat folk! Hope to someday visit the café boat, but we do enjoy watching your vlogs, and seeing all your progress...it's just bloomin' lovely!!😊
Thank you for being willing to be open and honest on here!
If anyone doubts if parenting on a narrow boat and giving your child a good upbringing is possible, they only have to look at your channel.
William is thriving - he’s got an excellent vocabulary, a wonderful sense of curiosity and seems to be happy and very healthy! You’re both doing an excellent job at raising him in a world full of lots of challenges. His simple joy at playing in the sunshine with his sand and water table is what childhood should be all about.
This video reminded me that I told you before William was born that you were the cutest couple on the cut! Definitely proved it today! Love you guys (includes William! ) & love watching your videos. Jo, have you considered homeschooling for William. He's such a bright & inquisitive little boy that it seems he would be a joy to homeschool. I think inquisitiveness is half the battle to learning so you're half-way there. I'm not sure if homeschooling is common in UK, but here in US the number is growing by leaps & bounds. The shutdowns took a huge toll on our children & on education. Just a thought. 🤔 William is learning tons from your travels and both of your occupations. Vic, best Q&A I've seen. You're a great editor. ❤😊👍
I totally agree with the home educating thing, my daughter home educates ( most home ed`s don`t like the `schooling` word) my 8 year old grandson and he is the brightest kid. OK, his writing could do with some work but ask him about the world, the universe, nature etc and he will pretty much know the answer, he reads constantly. I think Jo AND Vic would be perfect home educators for William, look into it, there is a mass of stuff, lesson and project wise, on the internet.
Great videos by the way, my favourite on YT 😊
A lot more common in the Uk now than it used to be actually, numbers are sky rocketing! Plenty of local fb groups for you to look at if you were thinking about it x
Also you really don’t need to worry about being ‘teachers’. All you do is facilitate their learning through every day stuff and…you know the magic apps there are these days to teach kids to learn to read etc it’s great.
You love making them ,and I assure you, I love watching you three. Lots of love 🤗
It's been 42 years since I stopped drinking alcohol. I, too, stopped when I had my first child. Truthfully, I didn't much care for the spins 😊or being best buddies with the toilet or the lack of control of just being in control of your mind and body.😊
William is so smart it would be easy to homeschool/boatschool. So much is on-line and so much curriculum is available. He is already learning so much more with traveling to many places than most children. So many museums to visit and experience.
It's on my bucket list to find your café boat and drop by for coffee and cake some day. I live in the Yukon in northern Canada but that's not going stop me.😄
I love narrowboat life far more than living in a house. It’s cheaper, even when some things go wrong. Being retired, I feel as if I’m sheltered from the outside world (if you can understand that). The family wanted me closer to Kent, and possibly living with them when my Husband died at Bugsworth Basin, but I decided to stay onboard and so far, haven’t regretted it.
How lovely you managed to stay onboard.🎉 We had to have a home mooring when we sold the house, it's our piece of safety and sanctuary. Free to roam and come back. 2 kids onboard the nature everywhere was fabulous. I'm not sure I could live in a house again if 100%honest, either.
I wish I could teleport there to buy cake and coffee from your amazing cafe. Nice haircut, Vic. William is growing up so fast-what a fine fellow he is. I know what you mean about the water regarding young William,; I had a high school friend who grew up with her grandpa and grandma, who lived on the Ohio River in Illinois. She had been around water all her life and knew from her toddler years how to be safe. I was not used to the river and was nervous on the boat, but she was calm and knew what to do for safety.
At the end when you were saying :"We haven't drunk any alcohol for almost 2 years", I was thinking of the old guy that is having his daily shave in my mirror on the boat, that guy is 75 years old, was in the Army during the cold war, based in Germany (1967-1971) were it was cheaper to drink hard liquer than my drink which was freshly pressed orange juice.
In these 75 years never had any alcoholic drinks, not even a beer, and I must say that I've rever regretted my choice.
The only alcohol I've ever had were chocalate sweets filled with rum, of which I've had 2 when I was about 12 y.o. but that luckily didn't show-up last time the gendarmerie stopped me for an alcohol test, too bad for them 😜.
I don't remember if I've ever made this comment, but I do think it every time I watch a new video--I appreciate, love, and really enjoy the way you care for each other, and in turn how good you are to your customers and/or vendors. You make a wonderful bright and lovely mark on the world. I also give a thumbs up to Joanna's remarks about starting a small business--that was a great bit of valid encouragement.
Wonderful video! Loved ‘baby on a boat’ from William! Great format for a q&a - loved all the moving about and questions between tasks!
Y'all are an uplifting presence on here. The effort you two put in to sharing your life and being with all us strangers is appreciated.
I love these Q&A sessions because one of the main reasons we all watch is because we want to get to know you. That is something we have the pleasure of doing with each episode. I admire you guys so much! We all have our daily challenges in our lives and yours is no easier than the average person. As Vic said in the video, the challenges of being on board with a young toddler are far enriched by the environment surrounding the boat. You guys are literally living my dream life! I admire your drive, I admire your ambition, I admire the fact that you've both embraced your individual talents and hobbies and turned then into your careers. Vic, you are an absolutely brilliant editor. Each video amazes me with your quirky angles and filling content in your B roll shots. Jo, you are a culinary Goddess! Your eye for quality is the recipe of your success. I really can't believe I'm about to say this but one day I will actually get down to buy some of your amazing cakes. So how can I say you're an amazing Baker? Well, everyone else who has tried your cakes says so. I trust the customers.
As parents, you guys are just the dream team. I can only imagine just how rich Williams little life is because I know I'd be in paradise with the surroundings you provide for him. I love you guys, I love this channel, I love what you do and I love your charming family life 🙏❤️
Wishing you many more happy moments and the best of success to you all ❤
Class look forward to seeing you three every week 👍👍
Have you ever considered moving onto a widebeam. We had a narrowboat for a couple of years and changed to a widebeam 2 years ago. Best decision ever. You’d probably be able to combine cafe boat and live aboard into one boat.
It's so good to know that your favourite people are as nice as you thought :) Love your family.
You making my Friday you help me unwind for the weekend. Take care and stay safe. the 3 of you.
This is one of the best episodes yet! I became a Gongoozler (in the states) about 4 1/2 years ago. My list of regulars has diminished considerably, but you have remained tied for 1st place. You are a joy to be with, and William is already an exceedingly bright young Lad. It is obvious that you pour love and care into him. I cannot recall a single episode which I have skipped through or played at a higher speed just to get through, as I often do for much of my RUclips consumption. One question for Victor - How do you cope with the intensity of waking up to Jo's big blue eyes and gorgeous smile every day? What a catch you made! Cheers for now!
That new looking captain, (a french/italian style?) a result of the holiday, is it? Another baby on the way? 🎶🎶 Hum, hum... And all that washing??!
Vic Jo, thank you so very much for being You. A great Vlog, probably the best you've done yet 👏 But we love you anyway . Stay safe ❤ xxx
Thank you for opening Holly for our anniversary yesterday! 🙂 and thanks for the lovely coffee and gorgeous cake. Great to meet you, it made our day.
Thanks my dears, wish I could be a patron but ....love your videos and appreciate so much your contribution to the lives of many. It is so uplifting to know there are such gorgeous people in the world, making it a better place for so many ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great vlog, loved hearing all the Questions and your Answers were very informative, the cake making looks very much hard work especially on warm days. Well done Jo and Vic for the editing ❤
"Salty too"
That comment went right under the radar 😂
Hi Vic, Jo & William, I love watching your vlogs and can see how hard you both work and enjoy your life as a family. I wondered whether you might consider serving soups in the autum/winter months.
Now Johanna. I have mentioned this before and I shall mention it again.😜. The comment came up about a savoury option and sausage roles were discussed. My alternative or additional suggestion was that the next books should be about soups. To start now in this very hot weather with Gazpacho a beautiful refreshing cold soup from Spain. There is also a very nice cold beetroot soup from the Baltic states which I cant spell or pronounce TBH. 🤣Then move into Autumn with some hearty hot soups and chunks of fresh bread. I will place an order now.
Are you thinking of borscht? It's certainly popular among people who have tried it! :D
@@crystaledelmann Hi well yes I was but thinking of it spelt this way Šaltibarščiai. Come to think of it Borscht is a lot easier to spell and say. :)
12:20 I'm not a vegan (or vegie), but the vegan rolls were absolutely great. Tommy's pizzas are great. They also have a small shop on Buxton Road in Macclesfield (don't think you can book, it's just first come first served and it's always packed!!)
It was a real pleasure to travel down from Lancaster today (3rd) to visit you guys! The coffee and cake was amazing - Paul & Angie
Loved this very much 💜💜💜 Thank you for sharing your thoughts 💜 Again the style of answering in different locations was super entertaining and made everything so enjoyable 💜💜💜
So good! Now knowing your background in TV show editing your current story telling is captivating and a pleasure to watch. Yay us ❤
Absolutely loved it you so blew it out of the water. Love you 3 what a lovely honest family. Trevor & Linda 😘😘
Haircut looks great, Vic!
I'm so glad that you enjoy making the vlogs as much as we enjoy watching them! All RUclipsrs' vlogs are different, produced for different reasons, and yours comes under the genre of entertainment with a frisson of drama!
We love that you use a variety of ways of filming and we never quite know what you'll come up with week to week. Taking us along for the ride when you go on your travels makes us feel like one big family and is so interersting.
You chat away so naturally to camera, you're a fab family and William is a joy to watch as he grows up!
As if you aren't a lovely enough trio, Jo was really rocking wearing a cap this week! Vic and your sandwich filling choice - ridiculous! Best wishes to you all, one day we'll make it up to Holly for coffee and cake! Xxx
Enjoy your videos, so calm and relaxing. I loved the canal in Chester when I was there almost 5 years ago.
Love this vlog :) Thank you for all you do to bring them to us x I have spent the last two years travelling around the world on my own in my sixties. I thought I should 'be sensible' so rented a gorgeous cottage in the south of England, but feel a little guilty because I am missing travelling and want to get out there again! I hope I am brave enough to take that step. You inspire me to do it :) x
Loved your Q and A thanks. Loved that you moved around whilst doing it not like a lot of people. Just love your channel and William is just such an adorable little boy.❤️❤️
Thankyou. This was a very enjoyable video. I love your question and answer format
Great videos, you come across as really nice people and I very much enjoy watching your journey. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing👍🏼🙋🏼♀️
Your hair cut looks fantastic!❤❤ I think you are the sweetest family. ❤️❤️🇨🇦
I am so thankful to hear how well things have turned out for all of you. Your sharing is an inspiration for all of us in these scary times.
❤❤❤ Life in just about every aspect is so stressful anymore. Watching your videos is a pleasant escape from reality.
Wow! Sara wants to know who that dashing young man with a nice hair cut is. 😂 Watching your videos is such a joy, your son is adorable we find watching your family activities is very therapeutic, keep them coming. 🎉
merci... it;s always a joy to watch you enjoying life xxx

Loving the hair cut, much better 🎉😊

Thanks for the inside, that was interesting.
Perfect way to unwind after a week of solo-parenting while working from home!
Love your channel. Love this video. Have enjoyed watching, your videos for long time, before William joined the crew. He is such a joy.
I luv u guys, what a great life for William ❤ I can’t stop watching
I’m still amazed at William’s vocab and articulation. Is he 3 yet?
An interesting way to do a Q&A. Thanks guys.
Just enjoy making the family as before you know it, you will be ‘trying’ not to make anymore!
Great honest film with as usual lovely editing,
Don’t worry, we are all (well most of us) stressing behind the scenes.
Keep safe ! ❤
I do love your channel, often thought provoking, with great cakes 😻 I’ve just started living on my houseboat in OZ, think one bed apartment size, with an engine. I absolutely love it, so peaceful, and living in nature :)
Is your houseboat static or are you continually cruising ? I am in Tasmania and would like to live on a moored up houseboat either in a marina or on the side of a marina but not really interested in continous cruising.
@@terenceseymour-tf8rptassie725hi, I have a marina berth at Murray Bridge, I will be using this as a home base. My boat has an engine, I’m not static, and plan to do trips :)
@@Deb_Downes Yes anywhere on The Murray would be good for livaboard boating.I actually think there is potential to build a canal network in Tasmania linking the central Highland lakes and fishing locations as an alternative housing option. It would be a great economic stimulus with tourism opportunities and boat building.
@@terenceseymour-tf8rptassie725I think Tasmania would be a very difficult place to achieve that plus, the cost would be enormous :)
@Deb_Downes My vision came at the height of the pandemic when there was much concern about the economic effects of the pandemic and Governments were looking at major capital works to keep people employed .
My proposal was indeed a high labour , high capital project similar to post ww2 projects like the Snowy Mountains Hydro electricity scheme and Tasmania's Hydro Electricity power stations sadly I was unable to convince Government of it's worth.
A lot of guys on RUclips leave their hair grow long and it looks stupid. Your haircut looks good. I like it.
Much respect to all; thank you so much for sharing
I love the way that you've mixed ordinary activities with the Q&A - most people do straight Q&A but this is way more fun! Thank you.
And also, thank you for your Northern warmth (even Vic, who comes from who knows where)
The smell that you love after the rain has gone is called Petrichor. Could be useful in a pub quiz? 😁😁
No alcohol for 2 years, very impressive with a small child! One day will have to venture along the canal network from Kings Langley and find the Cafe boat!
Vic, can I pass on a bit of advice that was given to me about 45 years ago by a German barber? If you have a narrow face, don’t have sideburns.
You really are one of the nicest places on the web - thanks for taking us all along with you :-) And next time you're stressing about all the things we don't see, take comfort that William will be building fantastic life foundations so much from all your parental input - and in such a great environment.
Great video Guy's my mum is 95 and she Really looks forward to your videos.she love's your little William 😊have a great weekend thanks for making my mum smile 😃
A great episode guys, really enjoyed it. Thank you.
I last had a drink in June 2020. I didn’t realise at the time it was going to be the last drink, I’d just had one too many big weekends following my birthday in May and fancied a break. It became a habit and when I had a brilliant Christmas without a drop, that’s when I realised it was going to be a forever thing.
At first I stuck to fruit juices and water but after a couple of years decided to give the zero beers a go. They’re great, especially Guinness! Recommend 😅
Cute session, you are always enjoyable and very natural, o good to hear about lack of alcohol, very senible, love your videos especially young William. Thank you.
I really look forward to Friday and seeing what your family has been up to this week 🤗✨👍☕🥐 William is a beautiful
Happy person ! It's been a pleasure watchinh him grow up :) Thank You for putting this Channel on Utube 👍🌸 from 🇨🇦✨🤗Hugs to all your family 💞🎉
I really need to start remembering to like all your vids (I am now). Thank you for keeping me entertained and thank you for your cookbook. And… great editing 😉
remembering to like also works as a bookmark if you get behind on the vlogs which I am sure you will not as you eagerly await the next one .

Your version of not knowing what you are doing looks like an honest success to me.
Absolutely amazing love you guys ❤xxx
I adore your family! Also the river cruising is one of a kind, balancing work and life being ever so adventurous ❤
I think your better having a cafe boat its kind of a niche ,you get screwed over with rates n stuff , youve got a good thing going with the boat id say stick with it .
Hair looks great, loved the video.🤜🤛
Enjoyed this episode so much. Just seemed so off the cuff. Happy you are back on the boat because you come across more happy when on it. William is flurrishing in the your love and attention. Good job. Love from Canada 💕
Another great video. Love the questions & answers too. It gives us a little bit of an insight. Did you water blast Zero too. I am glad you are getting some sunshine. We are in the middle of a cold snap as we call them. It has been snowing in the South Island. So we get this cold blast that flies up the country & hits you with the big chill. Look forward to your video every week. I hope you have a great week guys. Take Care.
The pizza looked incredible. Was it as good as it looked? Loved all the q and a. Learned lots but the honesty part I already knew about, it shines in your editing. Love the William boy, he's so precocious and special. They grow up so fast, so savor every stinking moment of it, you're both raising a wonderful guy.
Great honest and interesting vlog, loved it. I also believe you are providing a treasure chest, of childhood memories for William. You three are providing the new Friday feeling.
Great catch up thank you for sharing your life and the tips around your jobs. Appreciate the editing and music inserts. The guinea pig reminded me of a school pet back in the 70s, same colour she was called Susan and we took it in turns to look after her at weekends 😊 thanks for recalling a forgotten memory ❤
It was sooo much fun to watch this Q & A. Have followed your channel since you bought Holly the Cafe Boat. I am in Australia hence the "upside down" emoji.🙃
Love your little family and boats loved the q& a ,why are narrow boat vlogs so relaxing I follow a few narrow boat volgers and I always feel at peace watching them it always seems like life is so idyllic and chilled ,so thanks guys for contributing into my little comforting bubble ❤xxx

Hi guys,
Jo as I live in a Canadian city, what makes your butter so yellow?
Pertaining to a future cafe shop on land, remember that Holly is your signature. Holly works well for you and really costs you very little.
You guys are really lovely people and great parents, from what is visible on this side of the screen lol.
Mark

It looks like Jo uses Jersey butter. The yellow colour in Jersey cream and butter comes from the grass the cows eat. Beta-carotene is the yellow colour pigment that makes the Jersey milk that golden colour. The cows get most of their vitamin A from the carotene in the pastures they are grazing. Part of the carotene comes back out in the milk, unchanged. This is why Jersey cream and butter look more yellow.
If you don't know where Jersey is, it is an island, part of the Channel Islands, off the coast of France, which is a self-governing island of the United Kindom. Is is warm due to the Gulf Stream. The cows are on grass nearly all year. I am fortunate to have a friend who lives there, so I visit often. The Channel Islands are worth a visit. Hope this helps.
@@CathAfloat Great explaination! We have Jersey cows here I US....via the UK, I'm sure! 😊 It is a cow of choice for homesteaders making their own butter because of the creamline/butterfat. Since I don't have a cow, I buy Irish KerryGold butter. Much higher butterfat & the butter is twice as yellow as American brands. The first time I had it, my mind was blown. 🤯 The flavor was amazing. I think the UK has much better options for good food products than here. We can get it but we have to grow our own or search out locals producing, and/or growing for sale. What a blessing Jo can have great butter delivered canal side. I sure wish I could try some of her pastries! 😋
Thank you Cath for the explanation. So envious of the British foods and many other things in Britain

As I am far away in Australia and haven't visited England and especially the Northwest and Midlands since the pandemic iam very fond of your watery travel❤
If there is anything available locally in the way of swimming lessons for toddlers, please take the opportunity to get William used to deep water. You are amazing parents but accidents happen, attention gets distracted. He would probably enjoy them.
That was fun. I enjoyed your humour in your responses.
I read a book called “Narrowboat Summer,” about three middle aged women questioning their futures. I enjoyed the book and decided to find out something about that life so I started watching some RUclips Narrowboat channels. This added to my regular watch of truckers, sheep farmers , wheat harvesters and harbor seal recoveries in Namibia, Elephant Nature Park in Thailand, vehicle recovery specialists in U.S., etc. I enjoy them all.
Brilliant insights! ( deffo not overshared I don't reckon )The reason that I enjoy watching your youtube vlogs so much is that it is so clear to me, as a viewer that you enjoy creating them and that it's a passion that is being channelled ( see wot I did there?) to support a chosen way of living. More importantly, it's a beautiful way to connect and share the discovery of freedom and change of life direction with the outside world and with those of us who are peripheral dwellers and are looking for alternative ways of being on Earth. Free falling in this World right now, I feel is adapting to current evolution. Happy Days! Everyone needs MORE CAKE! ( I'm an english woman living in Melbourne Australia )
