How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our tiny house on wheels into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream! We've recently added a lakeside cabin into the mix, which has been so much fun to renovate and turn into a dreamy cottage but our heart is at the land, the 10 acre homestead we built from scratch in the middle of the woods!

We ended up spending our anniversary down by the water with the boys. Later in the afternoon, Todd decided to pick up Chinese food and someone else who lives on the lake set off fireworks (not for us, just a coincidence LOL). I still can’t believe how fast the years slipped by…TEN years married, I’ll guess we really are getting older 😆...it's been nice to take a few days to relax away from the hustle of construction but we're SO excited to get back to work and finish this deck. How dreamy is it going to be?!

As President of the American Dumpy and Mel Fan Club, I think you guys should name something on your property after them. Something that's a permanent fixture, like a tree or particularly pretty viewpoint or something in their honor. As someone who's followed you guys from the RV days to now, it's been one heckuva ride and it's so exciting to see how far you've come!
How do I join??
When your pool is finished, always hang a little towel or piece of cloth into the pool, so when a squirrel or your cat falls into the pool they can climb out with the help of the towel/cloth.
Great idea! When we had a pool in a Florida, we put little pieces cut off pool noodles to save the many froggies who ended up in our pool skimmer

We turned 70 this year, and can testify that, yes, time flies by faster with each passing year. We affirm you both in your intention to live more in the present, and take very opportunity you can to celebrate each other, your love for each other, and your love for life. Now that we are an old gay couple who met late in life, we wake up each day with gratitude for the day, and end each day with gratitude. We wish for your the happiness and joy that is a feature of every day.

Don't forget to start planting, mint, lavender, lemon glass, marigolds, garlic and rosemary all around the pool area. Just a other way to keep ticks away from pets and guest. Once they get established they will come back year after year and protect everyone from ticks and other bitting bugs. Wouldn't hurt to add a couple more bat nest/boxes
Yes to ALL of these except mint...mint is the bane of my existence and I wish I never planted it because it's impossible to get rid of!
You can plant in tubs that keeps it from being invasive@@tylerandtodd
@@tylerandtodd just plant mint in pots since it spreads so quickly or plant it under the trees so the scent will rub along bellies of the dogs. Extra protection for them
@@tylerandtodd it will also help to keep the squirrels and other rodents away since they don't like the smell
@@tylerandtoddWhite thyme and geranium are great for repelling mosquitoes. Not sure about ticks. But it would be worth a shot to plant some or just get some outdoor essential oil diffusers with a timer on it. P.s. white thyme essential oil is STRONG just use a couple of drops in the diffuser or spray bottle. Never use it on the body without diluting it.
As a devout fan I am truly glad things are the progressing. As a women who gives birth and raises children I would argue the point of giving life to another human and raising another generation of good people beautiful and complicated not as you stated “simple.” Please enjoy your anniversary and rest of summer.
I got to be honest, I was questioning why you guys got into all that trouble of constructing the container house, while you have the dome and the lake house, and Tyler spit it out for us: .... kids!!!!!! My personal kryptonite is when something that should take 3 steps suddenly takes 7, then 9, then spirals off into chaos and darkness. Watching y’all deal with all the errors that you’ve been saddled with thanks to crummy engineers and contractors (and I don’t even want to think about paperwork and permits and general bureaucracy)… Honestly it’s incredible. Having to work in high temps and humidity really sucks, but you will be so happy this winter knowing that all the major outside construction is finished, and you can work indoors in the dry, at temperatures you can control. Happy Anniversary from Ed and Zack!

BEAUTIFUL! That "overhead View" near the end of today's video reminds me how magnificent your location is! It is wonderful to see "the beginning of the end" as your deck is being built. Also, Congratulations on your 10th Anniversary! Milestones remind us how precious our time is. As for memories, I can still remember my first day at Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario), which will be, in 3 weeks, 50 years ago! Momentous occasions do stick with us.

I hear you guys about the heat. I live in Northern California in the Sierras. All last week we were in the 90’s! That is not normal for the mountains. None of us have air conditioning, because it isn’t normal for it to get so hot!

17:59 our deck at our lake house is everything to me. It’s the length of the house and covered and then there’s a concrete patio below it in the bottom level that’s the same length too. Half of the main deck is screened in and has a TV and a fan and light, I love it. If there’s a rainy weekend, I’d rather drive an hour and a half here and be able to sit outside and read all weekend and listen to the rain that sit at our regular house and be indoors all weekends.
