Greetings from Japan - This video is truly a remarkable and inspiring profile of Samuel and his family’s self-sufficient homestead in Brittany, France. Samuel, his sister, and his father are deeply thoughtful, articulate minds living an extraordinary dream. Their self-sufficient way of life is nothing short of admirable. Samuel’s intellect and practical wisdom shine through in every aspect of his existence-from growing all their own food to managing the daily needs of their farm with an innate connection to the land. Raised and homeschooled in a rural environment, he’s cultivated a profound understanding of the world, paired with a quiet devotion to caring for his father and sister. The simplicity of their life belies the depth of knowledge and precision with which Samuel runs the farm, embodying a harmony with nature that is rare and deeply fulfilling. I connected so deeply with Samuel's sentiment about preferring to stay at home on the farm. I too find peace and fulfillment in the self-sustained life we’ve built, where everything we need is right here at home. His methods remind me of the traditional farming practices here in Japan, where small farmers use no fertilizers or pesticides, employ ducks to control pests, weed by hand, and grow heirloom crops-farming practices as natural and pure as Samuel’s. This is one of the best videos I’ve watched on RUclips, or anywhere else for that matter. Thank you for sharing such a profound and beautiful glimpse into this life. Sincerely, Bear
It has taken lifetimes for things to get as awful as they have and it will take lifetimes to undo the damage. He sees that. He knows that this won’t come to fruition in his time.. but he also knows that he can make a difference. He is planting seeds of change and simply knowing he has made a positive impact on not only people but the composition of the soil is “payment” for him. That is beautiful.
This guy is so genuine and true to himself. The fact that he is content to live his life on his terms is impressive. I loved his quote abiut wanting people to come to him and that he wanted to be proven wrong abouy being the only one farming that way. He lives a simple life but is not insular and wants to share his skills. What a great dude.
"There's a certain bond between people that ... like to get wet in the rain." Love that. Thanks for sharing this story, Peter. Continued blessings to you, Samuel!
@Peter Santenello I just want to tell you that your videos are really informative and respect to you, for not only showing us ‘undiscovered’ parts of our planet, but also, stimulating people to form their opinions based on critical thinking and asking questions for knowledge purposes. You deserve the success you are having and keep continuing the great work.👍 Greeting from the Netherlands.
When asked if he feels more English or French, he says, "I feel rural." And that's the real divide in this world, those who prefer rural/country living and those who prefer living in cities. One that needs constant growth and consumption and the other seeking equilibrium.
@@jakew1362 I don't know the sentiment of the "vast majority" of rural Americans, but the imbalance caused by consumerism is pretty apparent. I think it's the natural state of the vast majority of all people to seek the kind of equilibrium that a slow, purposeful life brings. That life's being made increasingly more impossible by the trappings and demands of consumer culture. And I think people are feeling a growing sense of confined frustration and meaninglessness due to it. And I think those closest to their rural roots feel it the most.
Country means nothing really. We're all the same, it's just people with power who want control that ruin this world. If everyone tried to build communities and live in harmony with the world, it'd be a much more beautiful planet
That's exactly what I said to my husband yesterday as we were watching this video. Encountering people from different nations & religions, seeing how they slander each other based on those divisions, I realize that the biggest separations are rural vs. urban. While we may have different beliefs & politics, essentially the mindset & values of rural people are more similar to each other.
Samuel, I'm 70 years old in USA. When I was 5 years old I found a sickle, but never had good luck with it. Thanks to you, here on Peter's video, I learned to use the stick in my other hand. ❤THANK YOU❤
Ooooh welcome to Europe, Peter! It was beautiful to see how Samuel was open and happy to share his life and knowledge. I sure do hope you visit him again. Thank you both! Fingers crossed for more videos in Europe 🤞
"Culture stems from the land and from the people farming it". This is a powerful sentence. If people lose connection to the land, culture becomes an amusement for pastime, and soon you will feel like going to disneyland. What I love the most about this video, is how close his lifestyle is to Tituts and yet hies views vary greatly. The modern world tends to tell us that you need formal education and to travel the world to come up with ideas, while these people teach us that giving your brain time to work and the right nutrition, it will form incredible thoughts. This is the true diversity that all these soulless corporations boast about.
Definitely, I love Peter’s videos and certainly identify much more with Samuel than Titus despite the similarities of lifestyle. But then I’m a product of a culture much closer to Samuel than Titus - the religiosity of the US can be quite alien.
I bet Samuel is more contented than many people with great monetary wealth. His life is his land and he speaks more honesty than the politicians of most countries. I have a pair of cloggs from Lancashire and they are very comfortable.
Love how clear-thinking these people are. Quietly confident in their chosen path, unconvinced by grandiose visions, and equally humble about both their successes and failures.
"I was living on a piece of land but I wasn't apart of it". This is an amazing quote to any lucky home owner with their own land. Hopefully, you're able to work on your land - maintain it, and enjoy it. I know many unfortunately that have their own land but aren't "apart of it" as they hire people for maintenance, or rarely get to step foot on it because they work too much. Work / life balance.
Peter im so glad an american is coming to my region, Britanny! Picking berries and cycling on these small roads is basically my childhood 😂. Im so flattered and happy you get to see my native land and shoot a video of it. It almost made me cry. Thank you so much!
Peter, Bethan's response about "what do you feel about where the world is going?" Is spot on. Our kids are the ones we should be building a future for and instead we have become a society so involved in ourselves..our work, our school, our financial woes, or health, our social media..and never taking the time to just spend with our kids with no distractions, and teaching them morals and values and hard work and not allowing social media or the world teach them or influence them. Getting back to family. Same idea the Amish have same idea the Hisidic jews have....it always comes back to family and virtues.
@CatherineOrganes I also admire this young man and his family, and their love of Earth, and natural and mostly self-supported living, but your statement about getting back to "family," with the "ideas of Amish and Hasidic Jews," one must know that many extreme religions and narrow cultures oppress females, which is not virtuous or healthy.
He reminds me of my recent ancestors so much, Market gardeners who did it all by hand tools and lived such a peaceful and slow life, I don't know if Samuel will see this but I thank him so much for bringing back those memories I cherish. from Worcestershire, UK.
How do you find people so authentic with such pure hearts & beautiful souls? What a breath of fresh air you are in such a selfish, corrupted & poluted world. God bless you Peter.
I don't know where you live, but most people I know are nice and beautiful people. Just because someone lives like a peasant does not make them more "pure" than others. 😅

This has been my favorite of your videos so far. I think at first he comes off as a bit strange, but then you come to realize he is very down to earth, no pun intended. I SO agree with his analogy of the people in towns like pigs in a shed. That's how I've always felt. I can't live in a town or with other houses touching mine. I feel like a rat in a box. I'm SO lucky to have land and a house away from other people! I really understand this guy.
My house used to have lots of open fields and trees behind it. It's now a gawdy housing estate. Notice how no new homes have any real gardens. Creating people who are totally reliant on the system.
@@greenwendal5056 of course, that's why I would rather live in a smaller house in the country, with land than a palace in a town or city. You are so removed from the earth and nature, it's awful to think of. Everyone feels better when they experience nature. I listen to the birds all day everyday. Touch the trees etc .. free life
you guys are so lucky, im stuck in suburban 'living' in australia and its horrible, i personally think i am just going to up and leave at some point possibly even next year, i would rather live in the bush than my current home where i can hear my neighbour yelling through the walls all the time and playing loud music. the housing they are building are all tiny sardine cans with thin walls and no back/front yards, a recipe for neighborhood troubles its almost like sticking a bunch of random people next to each other is a bad idea who would have thought.

23:50 So much eloquence but this resonated with me in an intimately personal way, “I’ve always been the little one in the house…haven’t got kids but I’ve moved up a generation, people are looking up at me hoping for some inspiration, for some guidance.” It’s bittersweet but overall a truly beautiful thing. I’ve not heard anyone articulate this before and it puts words to this stage in life and the importance of legacy and tradition. I truly appreciate hearing this statement.
seriously it is the question we all have when freedom of choice is at it's highest, the question you ask yourself on what you want to do in life. truly nobody knows and the beauty of it is that we are here and that we have that chance to simply just make something of it rather than be upset of the current state, you can either laugh or cry about it and its a sublimation that we all try to manipulate and jump the gun in this modern age with technology as he says, something im constantly thinking about is how its all connected, this video was a beautiful thing to see after many of these same questions i've been passively pondering as of late, and for him to be so direct and open with his goals and to see his life reflect that is exactly the kind of honest remedy to this societal sickness he not so subtly disses throughout the video, something to definitely live by for anyone, he's clearly taking his oath seriously, and the grin on his face when he says it is so, clearly is proof enough.
I like this chap, and as much as he probably doesn't realise it, he embodies a lot of what it is to be a Yorkshireman. Blunt, to the point, slightly unyielding on opinions, doesn't like parting with money....wears a Flat cap. As a Yorkshireman myself, of almost equal age, I get exactly what he means and why he's out there doing things as he sees right. He also, hasn't entirely lost the North Yorkshire accent, either....which again, as someone from the same area, I have touches of despite moving around a lot as a youngster.
My dad was a Yorkshire man, even though after marrying my mum, he lived in Lancashire for 60 years. Yorkshire folk are one of a kind; blunt, shrewd yet generous, friendly, down to earth, hard working and stoic. Just lovely people and coming from a Lancashire lass, that's high praise indeed😂

Sincerely,
Bear

Identifies with his ancestral people and the land they roamed and worked for generations. Brings a tear to my eye. God bless this man.
he is not Breton so it's not his ancestral land, english and Breton are different ethnic

Well said, Ty
When asked if he feels more English or French, he says, "I feel rural."
And that's the real divide in this world, those who prefer rural/country living and those who prefer living in cities. One that needs constant growth and consumption and the other seeking equilibrium.
the vast majority of people in the countryside in the USA are not seeking equilibrium.
I, too, was impressed by that statement. It made me feel a kinship with someone on the other side of the world.
I absolutely love your Off Grid videos, especially in France!!!

Politicians ( Puppets ) are trained to lie & maintain the Status Quo they ware payed for . Wake up .... thats how it is for decades .
Love how clear-thinking these people are. Quietly confident in their chosen path, unconvinced by grandiose visions, and equally humble about both their successes and failures.
One of my favourite episodes yet!! Samuel has such a good soul. Thanks Peter.
@@NMV-ej4zd Females need strong males to make them behave just as children do, so it is not so much oppression as it is discipline.

This has been my favorite of your videos so far. I think at first he comes off as a bit strange, but then you come to realize he is very down to earth, no pun intended. Peter, I'm used to your US videos and never thought you would travel to Brittany where I live. Amazing ! Thanks for your videos, such a treat.
As a 29 year old, I'm loving this guy's insight. Thanks Peter!
He also, hasn't entirely lost the North Yorkshire accent, either....which again, as someone from the same area, I have touches of despite moving around a lot as a youngster.
cool i live not so far from this man. This Yorkshireman said he is celt. He really fits in Brittany because many people feel "breton" ( celts).
