I have this same base car, but WOOOOOOOOW(!) you've turned it into a work of art! I lived in Japan between 1994-1999, so I was there during the heyday of, "Japanese Supercars." I think it was the only time in history, when I could just walk out the front door, and see -- just rolling naturally around on the street -- things like FD RX-7s, Supras, Skyline GT-Rs, and NSXs. And, believe it or not, the EF9 Civic SiRs were right there in the thick of it. Now, because I have been an EF fan since 1988, it was just natural for me to gravitate towards the JDM version, and yeah, they made me drool. My goal was always to return to Canada, and re-create what I saw in Japan. Unfortunately, the best I could ever get was the CDM ED7 which, while good, isn't the, "best." Jon, what you have created here makes me drool, in the good, old-fashioned, Osaka/Kobe/Himeji way. Don't ever sell that car...of if you do, notify me first, eh? Haha.
Thanks for that, I really enjoy reading your comments and the memories that you share and have! Your appreciation for these old school classics is what inspires me to keep mine in the best shape possible and help share that knowledge with everyone that is interested in learning.
No, Jon, thank YOU for being the source for guys like me, who want to keep these cars running. You are the lifeline. You are the fountain of youth. And, with Eric the Car Guy out of commission, YOU ARE NOW THE HONDA guy on You Tube, I would think.
Dod Gamn!!! This EF is clean as heck!!! Love it!!! Had one in high school and now seeing yours I am Startin to get the bug to build one again!! Beautiful car sir!!
+Mr Sparkle Well divorce her. Lol. My wife fully supports my hobby, she's the one that tells me to keep them all! We don't have kids though so I'm sure that helps. 😀
love the fresh look! just when you think she couldn't get any cleaner. I think either black or gold center caps, with maybe a logo or just plain. awesome work!
The reason you're seeing those things with the hoses is because silicone hoses absorb coolant after a while. And yours being 5 years all that coolant you were topping up in the overflow is inside the hose itself
Yo Jon you could always throw some hood spacers on to stop the hood from hitting the valve cover, I went the cheap route and got longer bolts and stuck a couple of washers on the bolts cause I was having a similar issue
I put a piece of small doubled sided tape on the hood. I left the side facing down with the covering over the adhesive. It seems to have worked so far. I'm not a fan of lifted hoods, it ruins the body lines for me unfortunately so that route is a no-go.
Glad to have found a legit ED/EF bubbleback creator/driver cant wait to see the vids! Have had 3 so far 2 ED's 1 dx 1 si and an AH si (wish i kept it never seen one since) looking for a forth right now. any of your buddies fitting k20s in em? without hood issues i want stock look?
pilgrum Thanks man, appreciate that comment! I think it's tough. I don't have any experience with it unfortunately. I have seen people use a carbon hood that is raised like a JDM hood and that works. Even cutting the webbing on a stock hood still won't be enough.
Hey Jon, i bought the skunk2 intake manifold as well as the 66mm TB for the B16a in which my case like yours is obd0. On the back where the iac valve goes, it lines up with the bolt holes but doesn’t seem like it’s a solid seal where the gasket goes as if since it’s for all b16s might be different in some case. Seeing your setup runs well Im assuming you’re using the stock IAC off the oem B16a manifold like me, is that what I’m supposed to use?
Silicone hoses sweat as in they evaporate fluid through the hose. The crusty stuff is most likely just dried coolant which tends to dry into a white crusty layer. Silicone hoses don't last as long as rubber I've found anyway so it's probably best to change them now being 5 years old.
ive had the same set of black mishimoto hoses for the b16a in 2 different ek chassis for about 10 years and theyre still clean with no spots or anything like what you got...
Garage Built Hondas did it end up wiping off? was there actuall corosion in the silicone or was it just on surface? maybe was coolant sprayed from the overflow hose or something very small that sprayed all over... or couldve been battery acid that spattered out...
Man would a da integra radiator work in a ef? To avoid the inlet size issues.ive got a GSR b18c1 in my ef and using stock integra hoses on a si radiater just looks janky to me
It's not a bolt in fit, but I'm sure you could get it to work.why not upgrade to an aluminum radiator and not have sizing issues? It would help with your swap also.
Garage Built Hondas will be keeping this limited edition civic for life, so your channel is an awesome help in getting it back to perfection... will just take a few years haha! Lovin every step though ;)
+adzthewise I'm the same way, I've had this car for a little over 5 years now. Within the last 2 years I've added some really nice parts to try and make it stand out a little more!
Garage Built Hondas You've done such an amazing job, I'll be following a lot of your tutorials to rebuild my civic, so thank you, you will be apart of my Civics restoration (as you most likely are for many). Happy new year Jon :)
+adzthewise Really appreciate the comment! I've been trying to make it a nice quality build. I'm glad to be a part of helping to rebuild yours, if you need any suggestions or pointers let me know, and you have a safe/fun new year also!
Hey Jon.. great video! Appreciated the editing of the center cap purchase/delivery/unpacking - great way to set the mood! Curious to know if you would consider making/selling NARU stickers? Love the meaning of it the term (font is super cool too) ✌️
+Tommy Kim Thabks for that, appreciate the comment!! I would, you'd have to pick the colors you'd want and you have to apply everything yourself. There is the banner which you'll cut to fit, and you'll have to squeegee out the water. Not too hard at all. And finally applying the lettering. That's the easy part. I get them for $25 from a local guy.
haha, they actually shipped these so freakin fast man!! The ebay listing was weird too. It didn't show what country and I thought it was like Latvia or something!
Ugh, I just put some Mishimoto hoses on my EF sedan last year. I have noticed that it looks like they are sweatingI need to keep an eye on them apparently.
how did you install the half radiator? Did you have to cut out the hood and cross member to make it fit? I have a 1988 Honda CRX Si (Canadian Model). I'm reading that you have to chop the hood to make it fit...
+Andy Smith One kept slipping off, so I had them all ziptied at the moment. It was bent a little on the inside, so I stretched it back out and it's good now.
Nice work on your EF! super clean work 👍🏼 Couple questions/suggestions: Can you show what the internal differences of the JDM to US airboxes are, in another video perhaps? Looks like you could've possibly reused the US bottom section with the jdm upper half and not have to fuss with making a custom bracket. The US inlet arm section looks like it tapers in while the JDM looks straight if I'm seeing things right. Does the skunk2 tower bar require any light mods for fitment such as fuse box trimming? Thanks!
Thank you!! The JDM air box is just larger. The US bottom section would not fit with the upper JDM cover. Both are about 1" longer than the USDM counterparts. I don't believe there is a huge advantage to using the JDM one except to say that you are. Lol Skunk2 bar fits perfect, I had to move the wiring that's normally sticking up but I had already moved the bracket and move the wiring down into the engine bay a little bit.
Jon , I have a question about the cabin harness I am currently building a 1990 civic hatch , I have a spare plug by the cd player plug , I remember unplugging the small black box from it but lost it . do you know what it is for
Do you remember what brand intake tube you cut to fit? I recently bought one to do this but the bends were way off, was far away from the original pathway.
I'm thinking about putting a B16 head on my B20 block. Sounds like it should fit just fine but I'm not sure what else I'd need to change or modify. Where do you do your research?
Jon Widmer hey Jon on my car the Pedel goes all the way down still I bleed the system and it's not getting enough press to close the calipers in the rear could it be the master cylinder or the brake booster I say the brake booster because when it idling and I press on the brake it changes the idel I hear a lot of air leaking from under the dash
That sounds like you have a leaking booster. The booster operates off of vacuum and when you press the pedal it assists in pushing the fluid to the calipers. Yours sounds like it is leaking with what you described. If it was my car, I would replace the booster and master cylinder at the same time. A new master cylinder isn't very expensive.
I know this is an old video but: what’s your intake setup? Looks like an oem Ef box. What’s the tube in between? Love to have something similar on my b16 sedan.

Hey Jon I have a question nothing to do with hondas is about my moms car she has a 2013 Scion xD and when you turn on the ac the car starts shaking a bit don't know what could it be but I was reading and people say if the fan is not working correctly it could make the car shake because of the pressure of the ac and it's making the engine work harder and I do see the fans shaking a lot do you happen no know anything about this cars or what could be the problem please thank you 😊
Jon Widmer hell yeah!!! And yeah i was huge into Skunk2 stuff like 2 years ago, i had around $1,800 in skunk2 alone, coils control arms, tie bar, camber kits, shift knob, short throw, key chain, lanyard you name it lol
+Shaun Garfinkel I removed it for cleanliness of the engine bay. It wasn't working when I bought the car 5 years ago and didn't want to spend money on rebuilding it. This is not a daily driver. This car is driven only for pleasure and probably 1200-1500 miles a year all for fun only so AC is not a necessity on this car.
+Shaun Garfinkel if you're going with a B swap, Innovative makes a bracket to mount the D series AC compressor onto the B series engine. Everything else will stay the same.
@@GarageBuiltHondas I’m amazed at some of the questions you get asked... I guess some people don’t know how to use google... theres Honda tech threads from 20 years ago that describe step by step how to do a swap in an EF... I guess some people are too lazy to investigate for themselves.
Air box? Good luck, you'll just have to find someone selling one since it's a rare part and not offered brand new. The air filter? It's in the link in the description if you just need that. 👍
if you get clicking from your center caps you know what to do. LMAO... looking good bud... questions on your interior... what are they out of and what needs to be done to get it in mine ?
Tony p Right, lmao! I have the JDM EF9 SiR front and rear seats. They bolt right in. They can still be found, usually between $900-$1200. If you find any cheaper for the full set then it's a good deal!
Beautiful execution! Great job Jon,your lil hatchback is straight fucking class!Banner looks nice,u gonna make sum to sell or just for u and your crew? Great upload!👍✌☝
Thanks dude, I really hadn't spent any time or money on it in the last couple years, and it feels good to start making it "straight fuckin class" as you would say! lol You're the 2nd person to ask about a banner and I definitely wouldn't mind having others rock them, that'd be pretty awesome. They cost about $30 and it's all self applied though. The banner itself you have to cut to fit, then you need to apply the lettering. The lettering is easy as it's already a decal. The hardest part is applying the banner but it's not hard at all either.
Hey Jon I need a little more help I changed the brake booster and I bleed the system again but two sides didn't get brake and two side did driver front got brake passenger back got and the two other didn't from opposite sides the thing that I forgot to do was to bench bleed the master cylinder do you think it need more bleeding or what
Jon Widmer please help me out Jon kinda mad right now I been bleeding this brake for the past 3 days and nothing sometimes one gets hard or two and then I bleed them Agian and it loses it how many times should I press on the brake pedel I also changed the prop valve to the 1990 Acura integra one
Jon Widmer hey Jon could I get your email or phone so I could contact you quicker send it to me to my email berniereyes14@gmail.com I need a lot of help don't know if I am bleeding it wrong or I don't know
Jon Widmer sorry Jon if I am bugging you a lot but I don't know a lot about this cars like you do it's like if would have made this car from all the knowledge you have about this cars thank you Jon for helping out really appreciate
the man that s*** looks clean and sexy as hell good work on it man keep it up bro every time I look at that one and I fall in love with mines all over again👍👍👍👍👍👍
Garage Built Hondas yea im still obd0 too but wanting to convert to obd1, did you need to delete or remove anything with that skunk2 mani? Or just drop in, cuz i want a itr mani but dont really know anything about obd0
Nope, just dropped right in! I might convert to obd1 but not sure. There's something I just love about having an era specific obd0 engine/ecu in my Si!!
+Jonathan Villa The bar doesn't say 88-91 crx/Civic on the website unfortunately. But it's true same bar and fits all 88-00 Civic. skunk2.com/suspension/strut-bars/front-strut-bar.html
I got a question, I have a B20b motor swapped over to a 2000 hx civic. Now my coolant switch works bc I get a reading on the dash gauge but my fan won't kick on and I tested the fan motor and it works, anyone ever heard of this before???
The coolant fan switch is the one on the thermostat housing. The temperature sensor is the small one pin plug under the distributor and that is the one that shows the temp on your gauge cluster. You may want to check the wiring to the coolant switch, or possibly try a new one.
The hatch is looking great Jon. I'm digging the banner matching the wheels. I think you should get another set of centers so you can have options.
I just ordered another set!!
+Jon Widmer nice are you gonna do a satin black?
Ronnie Gonzales I am, and possibly find some red "Rays" decals.

I'm not a fan of lifted hoods, it ruins the body lines for me unfortunately so that route is a no-go.

pilgrum Thanks man, appreciate that comment! I think it's tough. I don't have any experience with it unfortunately. I have seen people use a carbon hood that is raised like a JDM hood and that works. Even cutting the webbing on a stock hood still won't be enough.
What did you do with the actual purge solenoid wiring before taping it? Are they spliced together?
I left the plug there and taped it up in the wiring loom.
Yes. I had no problems at all. It fit fine and sealed perfect!
Silicone hoses sweat as in they evaporate fluid through the hose. The crusty stuff is most likely just dried coolant which tends to dry into a white crusty layer. Silicone hoses don't last as long as rubber I've found anyway so it's probably best to change them now being 5 years old.

very clean engine bay and just leave ur center gray n put some gold honda sticker on it
That's a great suggestion also!

Great video as always 👌🏻
Thanks Jonathan!
ive had the same set of black mishimoto hoses for the b16a in 2 different ek chassis for about 10 years and theyre still clean with no spots or anything like what you got...

Garage Built Hondas did it end up wiping off? was there actuall corosion in the silicone or was it just on surface? maybe was coolant sprayed from the overflow hose or something very small that sprayed all over... or couldve been battery acid that spattered out...
It didn't. I've always kept the engine bay clean. It started seeping from the inside. Maybe the OEM Honda coolant did it, I really don't know.

What was the center section of the custom intake arm you removed? Just generic 3" for an EF? Thanks
1ronHideCivic Yes, but from a random 3" intake. Most are generally that shape anyway but the EF should fit the best.

how did you install the half radiator? Did you have to cut out the hood and cross member to make it fit?

Couple questions/suggestions:
Can you show what the internal differences of the JDM to US airboxes are, in another video perhaps?
Lol
Skunk2 bar fits perfect, I had to move the wiring that's normally sticking up but I had already moved the bracket and move the wiring down into the engine bay a little bit.
Jon , I have a question about the cabin harness I am currently building a 1990 civic hatch , I have a spare plug by the cd player plug , I remember unplugging the small black box from it but lost it . do you know what it is for
my bad it located on the dash harness
Do you remember what brand intake tube you cut to fit? I recently bought one to do this but the bends were way off, was far away from the original pathway.
I don't. I had/have random intake tubes always lying around. I found one that had the best fit and cut it.
do red crackle paint on the valve cover
I think that's the plan, red wrinkle powdercoat!
The coolant over flow bottle hose u have what kind of hose is that called I been trying find some
It's Nylon tubing, I got it at Home Depot. Look in the plumbing section.
Clean!!!

Google it. A ton of useful info will come up un old threads.

Sounds good buddy, when you pull the trigger and the wife lets you get another EF, I'll have them in the mail!!
I'm thinking you should paint the center caps.
I ordered another set to do just that!
Nice! For $5, you almost can't afford not to get another set
Right man, my thoughts exactly!
Doing a b series swap on my hatch has a d15 right now what radiator hose fits the half size radiator hoses on a b series
Depends on the radiator
Hey Jon do you need to change the prop valve when you do rear disc brakes conversion
Bernie Reyes No, it's a better brake bias, but not necessary. especially for a daily driver you'll be ok if you don't put one on.

I will eventually buy a new harness from CJ's probably. I'm gonna leave this one alone so I can sell it when I upgrade.
Do you prefer using the oem air intake box or a injen short ram intake ?
Injen short ram
Hey Jon I have a question nothing to do with hondas is about my moms car she has a 2013 Scion xD and when you turn on the ac the car starts shaking a bit don't know what could it be but I was reading and people say if the fan is not working correctly it could make the car shake because of the pressure of the ac and it's making the engine work harder and I do see the fans shaking a lot do you happen no know anything about this cars or what could be the problem please thank you 😊
Bernie Reyes sorry Bernie, really don't have any idea. I would Google "Scion AC vibration" and see what comes up.
Garage Built Hondas thank you will try
silicone hoses they sweath the coolant and make you car smell like coolant
Got it, someone else commented that too. It's good to know!
i went back to oem rubber no more problems aha
bob graton I'm going to try these new ones for a while, paid only $38 so they should last me a few years!
for the price cant go wrong even if they last 2 years haha
bob graton agreed, that's why I wanted to try out the generic ones!
Hello from Portugal.
Bernardo Picanco Hey there! Got the awesome center caps from Portugal!
Hey, yes i saw that, i was surprised, nice.
Is the Honda scene big in Portugal?
Its not huge like the USA because we are a small country, but its quit big.
Makes perfect sense, but always cool to see other builds from other countries!
Why the replica skunk2 spark plug wire cover??
Coda5610 haha, someone knows their shit, love it Coda. The real one I just ordered 2 days ago! Good eye man!!
Jon Widmer hell yeah!!! And yeah i was huge into Skunk2 stuff like 2 years ago, i had around $1,800 in skunk2 alone, coils control arms, tie bar, camber kits, shift knob, short throw, key chain, lanyard you name it lol
Did you get bored of the parts and just wanted to try something different?
Do you have ac in the car or was that taken out due to the swap?
+Shaun Garfinkel I removed it for cleanliness of the engine bay. It wasn't working when I bought the car 5 years ago and didn't want to spend money on rebuilding it. This is not a daily driver. This car is driven only for pleasure and probably 1200-1500 miles a year all for fun only so AC is not a necessity on this car.
Ok I gotcha I'm doing a ef swap right now and I'm just trying to see what I need to get the ac to work
+Shaun Garfinkel if you're going with a B swap, Innovative makes a bracket to mount the D series AC compressor onto the B series engine. Everything else will stay the same.
So I keep both fuse boxes along with the new fuse boxes for the new motor?
+Shaun Garfinkel yes
nice
Thanks Jason!
Do you have a guide to do a b16a swap in the ef chassis?
I don't unfortunately. Think it'd be a helpful video for a lot of people?
I think so yes and also can you add vtec to that motor ? What would you need a head ? Computer ?
That engine already has a vtec head. And you do need the correct computer for it to run correctly.
Where can I purchase this computer?
@@GarageBuiltHondas I’m amazed at some of the questions you get asked... I guess some people don’t know how to use google... theres Honda tech threads from 20 years ago that describe step by step how to do a swap in an EF... I guess some people are too lazy to investigate for themselves.
I'm new in the Honda world, what engine is that ??
Forrest Gump B16A
I have a question
Where can I buy an equal air filter?
and how do I look for it
I have hatch 90 b16a
Equal? What do you mean?
Same
Sorry
I want to buy air box like yours
Are you running obd0 vtec looks clean.
Thanks licky! Yes, with a PR3 ecu.
What's the main color of the car I'm trying to get my ef resprayed
BG-28P Tahitian Green Pearl
Hey buddy... if you still have the old box? If so I would like to buy it from you
I don't have it, sorry
What’s your air intake mate. Looks really good.
EF9 box custom arm.

Which radiator are you using I’m trying to find one that fits in my ef. The skunk 2? 349-05-1550
+Shaun Garfinkel Yes, the Skunk2 Half-Size.
would the bar fit an 00 civic si ?
Yes
do filters like that make the same power as aftermarket cold air intakes?
Usually no, but the K&N do make more than a stock replacement because the filter element has a much better flow rate.
Awe man lols i liked the old engine bay setup way more.. But still clean no matter what.. This is the obd0 motor right?
It's all good, thanks for commenting! Yes OBD0 still!
Hey bro great video. Im looking into ordering that skunk2 tower bar do have any info on the part number i seem to find only 92-00 civic
+Jonathan Villa go to Skunk2's website. That'll give you the part #
Garage Built Hondas i was just looking through there bro and nothing
+Jonathan Villa The bar doesn't say 88-91 crx/Civic on the website unfortunately. But it's true same bar and fits all 88-00 Civic.

Garage Built Hondas thanks alot bro👌🏼
+Jonathan Villa you're welcome!!
Immaculate
Thanks so much
What kind of tires are you running?

I got a question, I have a B20b motor swapped over to a 2000 hx civic. Now my coolant switch works bc I get a reading on the dash gauge but my fan won't kick on and I tested the fan motor and it works, anyone ever heard of this before???
The coolant fan switch is the one on the thermostat housing. The temperature sensor is the small one pin plug under the distributor and that is the one that shows the temp on your gauge cluster. You may want to check the wiring to the coolant switch, or possibly try a new one.
Garage Built Hondas thank u my man
