You put together some really good informative videos. I know this video is old but I’ve really enjoyed watching your channel. Just recently bought a 91 hatch and I’ve been loving revive it.
Just picked up my CRX yesterday. I was stoked to see all AC components were still there. I need AC here in TX. Glad the originally owner opted in for AC😁👌🏽😎
Great instructional video like always Jon. I’ve been a fan watching your videos for years. This particular video came in handy today removing the AC from my 88 DX hatch.
Did it today. Didn't have time to remove front bumper, but it all came out with little fuss. Only extra work I had to do was, I removed the upper radiator hose and the radiator fan. That gave me the space I needed to get it all out.
this is a good video bro, helped me a lot to understand how to remove the entire ac of my car, thank u for the dedication and i hope u can do more videos of the 88-91 civic :D
What I’ve always done with the ac fan, was to splice the wires into the main cooling fan, for more cooling until I installed the half radiator and fan. Just an idea. Nice video either way bro, keep up the good work.
Just on time ! I was planning to do that to my 92’ crx! Thank you for this very helpful explanation, and I’m gonna weight everything in the end to know how much I gained, it’s stock weight is 935kg ^^
Just did this following this video. If I could give some advise to people considering this it would be to use bolt cutters if you have them. Made it alot easier being able 2 cut the a.c. hoses as well as things like the a.c. belt
Man it easy because you make it looks easy. I watch your video about 15 times (this video) and I have enough gut to remove my AC. Lots of work and not even put things back together yet. I watch lots of your vblog and they all always awesome . Learn lots from you. Thank you. One question you mention about a plug to plug a firewall. Please tell me where I can get that? Thanks again
Never been a mechanic but always loved Imports and Hondas I'm a little bit older than most people that are in the Hondas at 47 I just bought a rust-free CRX SI that's basically a rolling shell. It needs a motor transmission seeds computer and while it has a empty engine bay I figured now would be the time to change bushings and suspension pieces and clean everything up any recommendation for taking on a project this large for somebody that's only change brakes before and other small things like VTEC solenoids
Just stay patient and stay focused on what your end goal is and the parts/money/time estimated to get there. These cars are not difficult to work on at all. Once you get your hands busy at working on the car it'll be non-stop repairs and upgrades! There is a ton of information online about these vehicles and I have a decent library of videos regarding these cars also. If you ever need a suggestion on something specific, feel free to leave a message on any of my videos!
I have 1991 sedan in burgundy..and want to make my a.c. work for me...but loved the video now I know how to disable and clean out that dirt that's most likley there
Hey GBH, I saw you comment on a video about swapping over the a/c compressor out of a 96-00 in theses efs. Do you mind giving some more details about that? Thanks again. Keep up the great content!
I read in a forum about someone doing this.. I cannot remember most details. Something about using a different ac bracket (maybe del sol VTEC model) and then an EK compressor. Google it, the information I believe still comes up.
Thanks for the video. We have an 89 Honda DX that needs some work on the AC system. Now I know how to get to the different components. One thing about AC on most vehicles...it's like an afterthought by the factory to install them. Just throw in some parts, lines, and hoses and hopefully it all works.
Me too man! I hadn't thought of it and bugged that I didn't do it from the beginning. Now I have to find another AC compressor since I tossed that one in the trash already. ugh.
Another great job Jon! Best instructions out there. Can I just reverse these steps if I want to add those AC components to an ef that did not come factory with AC?
My 90 ef had ac still as well. Needs a recharge every 2 years or so but works like new.. if you can make a video on best way to change the blower motor that would be so great
Garage Built Hondas yes i have my replacement off my parts car but couldnt seem to get it off without breaking a couple peices of plastic and i dont want to break anything on my daily
Garage Built Hondas i couldnt get it without removing assembly, but couldn’t figure out how to take off the rest of it. Like u got the left off in this video
+Christopher Rebello I was thinking it might be necessary to remove the evaporator core first, but thats unfortunate especially if your AC is still working you would have to disconnect it, then get it recharged. What a PITA.
a couple questions.. I always thought that last harness you removed was for the Radiator fans.. but tell me if I'm mistaken and that the Radiator fan will still spin?.. also I don't understand what you said about the fumes after removing the AC.. if there is no AC system doesn't that completely delete any excess fumes since it no longer exists?? I hope these weren't confusing haha I appreciate any answer thank you sir
Thanks for sharing that video. I have a honda civic 1991 sedan and i want to install a AC unit because it was optional those times in my country. Could you please give me technical details and dimensions in order to assemble it? Or is there any universal kit?? Thank you.
+RamVan Bobby The power is probably a little better because removing both the AC and power steering pump takes away then parasitic draw that both of those create on the crank. As for heat,I don't see much difference. I wouldn't remove them on a car you're trying to keep comfortable and daily drive.
I managed the job without removing the bumper. I just had to mangle the lines a little bit that ran around the bumper to get them out, but it might make the job a little easier
Yeah, I was considering that after watching the rest of the video. The amount of care you're taking with the parts seems like you intend to reuse them or sell them. I figured an R134 conversion wouldn't be worth it.
You know many years of daily driving the Honda in Texas heat , I'm really considering a B series swap just to make sure I have that passing power. Gotta have my ac now😎
Garage Built Hondas found out the tensioner was removed from my car... and it was using a smaller belt... didnt replace the old on cuz its on bad shape...
the wiring on the 91 integra is not the same as the description says it is. first the ac harness goes through the firewall with the rest of the headlight harness. also the 91 integra has a oil thermo switch which appears to be wired in with the fans and ac, so when you remove the ac it no longer as a complete circuit and the fans wont turn on. the wiring needs to be switched and i cant figure it out, i know the wiring for fuses 12 and 21 need to get switched but i cant figure out which wires. should be simple too..... fuse----coolant thermo switch--------fan-------ground.
Im debating if i should remove mine or not. I have some questions 1. how to clear the ac liquid in the system? Safely 2. i should just buy a new compressor (i think it doesn't work) i turn the ac on and it doesn't blow out any cold air at all. Any way of testing the compressor? 3. Is The box under the car for the air filter needed? Will it work find with out it?
1. A shop has the required tools to safely evacuate the system. 2. If an old ac compressor has been in an open system for a while, it's recommended it be replaced. Outside air can damage the seals internally. 3. The box under the air intake behind the bumper can be removed.
Garage Built Hondas do you know if the metal pipes from (like the one with the pressure switch and behind the bumper) will work if I use ones off an 86 CRX. They look identical but I’m not sure of the connection sizes.
Hi. I saw your comment on another 1991 Civic SI ac repair and have a question for you, if don't mind. I have 1991 Civic DX and trying to get the AC to work again. A shop a while back converted to R134a but stopped working about a year or so after that. I just recharged it with dye to see if there are leaks, but so far, I am not seeing any. The compressor comes on, fans are working too. Compressor is a Sanden. But my problem is the charge is not holding at all. While recharging, it seems the system does not want to be charged, like the pressure would increase as I am charging but decreases right after that. And so I can't charge it up to any level of good pressure to keep the compressor running. Thank you for your help.
I just found the original invoices of the previous AC work done on my 1991 Civic Hatchback DX, back in 2005 and 2008. This shop did the R-134a conversion July 2005 at 164K mileage. In August 2008 when I took my car back for AC repair for not blowing cold air, here's what they did: Replaced O-rings due to leak. Charged the system but high side pressure spiked and blew the pressure valve on the compressor. Debris in the system, recommend replacing compressor, receiver dryer, expansion valve and flushing the AC lines.
Mileage doesn't matter at this point. You may have a 31 year old compressor. That's usually what's broken. Depends on what your end goal for the car is if you want to remove or keep it.
@@GarageBuiltHondas for now, if I just want to clean the evap core, do I need to evacuate the gas, then disconnect the 2 evap hoses from the firewall ? Thanks !
@@GarageBuiltHondas sorry one more question, if I push on the pin of the low side port and I dont hear anything, can I assume the system is empty ? I haven’t tried the high side port since I cant take the cap off for some reason.
What’s the most common reason these no longer work? Is it from leaks from the o rings or leak from the compressor itself? Trying to decide if it’s worth attempting to fix mine. Not trying to drop a lot of $$ on it.
Yes, but check first. You'll pulley might already be be equipped to handle the AC belt. That's a really interesting question I've never thought about before on EF's. Next time I see a non-ac one in person that hasn't been worked on I'll look.
My radiator fan won’t turn on ! The car gets to reg temp and nothing just replaced thermostat and ect !! What could it be when I turn ac on one fan does turn on ( the passenger one) but not the driver side one at all
@@GarageBuiltHondas i know I sound like a rookie but tried looking up where the relay is at and I’m confused to which one it is .. stock wiring for a d16a6..
Disconnect the fan switch behind the block and ran it direct but only one fan. Turns on . The same one that turns on when I turn on the AC.. how do I check the relay for the driver side fan ??
@@GarageBuiltHondas not exactly sure car has been sitting over 7 years haven’t got to check that out . I mean it feels cold. But the fan that isn’t turning on is the driver side one
I'm about to buy a 1990 SIR this weekend but the owner did an AC delete so it's missing the climate control. Is it possible to just use a USDM climate control on a JDM SIR?
Will this process be the same on an automatic car? Do the transmission lines change things? And if there is power steering will that effect anything? Thanks
Hey John picked up a 91 hatch that already had the lines converted to r134 but ac never worked sense i had it . I removed the lines and compressor for my swap now it’s all back and I’m wondering how i should go to recharge it summer is coming in FL and I’m cooking already
I doubt the compressor works. I'd replace the compressor and receiver drier then vacuum and recharge the system, similar to what I did here. ruclips.net/video/RPU8pyy3Bq8/видео.html
My 89 DX still has all the AC components in place, but it doesn't work. I would like to see if it will work again before removing it. Is there a common problem on these AC systems causing them to fail? I dont even know where I should start, so maybe I should just take it to a shop that does AC work (unless you can give some pointers on quick things to check first).
There could be so many things wrong. Usually at this point the compressor has failed. If not that, maybe leaking o-rings, clogged expansion valve. It'd be better to take it to a shop to have them diagnose it.
I have a 1990 Civic DX sedan. I actually want to fix my A/C to have it during the hot summer. Anyone have a link to how I can trouble shoot or fix my A/C? Much appreciate any help here.
@garage built hondas Hey thank you for your time and the information. I didn't even expect a reply so this is all appreciated. Thanks for your knowledge!
thanks for the video man my 90 crx already didnt have most of the ac stuff because it had a b20 swap done by the previous owner so this video was great for me even went to one of the local gonda dealerships and bought the rubber firewall plug to replace the grommet that the ac harness is in
I just got done with installing the AC system job on a 98 Civic. I'm looking into getting this body style civic as personal. Do these use R12 with Ester oil or R-134A (HFC-134) with PAG 46 oil?
@@GarageBuiltHondas Ok. Thanks for the information. As in return, the new AC system are running in HFC-1234yf but I'm not sure about the oil. Bigger condenser and different fittings.
You can buy new components for the 88-91 civic. I'd search for a compressor that already has thr pre set amount of oil required in it when purchases. It removes the guesswork from adding oil yourself.
@@GarageBuiltHondas The guesswork is easy for me. From what I learn is find engine rotation and rotate the compressor the same way as engine rotation. At the same time, fill it just little lower to drain plug. It shouldn't take more than 10 oz bottle or provided.
Sounds good, just make sure you're aware of how much oil is needed in the system before adding too little or too much. Compressors are the same price with or without oil, I'd make the easy choice there. Good luck if you get the 4th gen model and have fun.
Hey garage built honda. Do you have that noise filter relay? I'm in the process of installing my ac and I don't have that filter to connect to the noise filter on my crx. It'd called a noise filter. Suppressor filter relay that sits on top of the fan shroud.
So i do have a question, whenever you remove the whole ac unit can you still run your air through your car just no ac? or does the whole entire air system not work? like the fan
The evaporator core that I removed from the air box was solely for that purpose. I reinstalled it because the blower fan still pushes the air through it to the heater core and you still retain full heater function.
Any link where i can buy all the lines and by all the lines i mean everything I’ve been looking to buy the complete ac system but i can’t dind where to buy some of the ac lines
On a setup like this where its not working, you won't be able to use many of the parts. A new compressor, receiver/drier and expansion valve are needed. You can flush the evap core and condenser but its hard to get everything out of those parts sometimes so its just better to replace those also. I personally would spend the extra $80 for those 2 parts brand new also especially if using all brand new parts elsewhere.
The only way at home is to vent it to the atmosphere. If you're going to do that, do it slowly so that the oil in the system doesn't spray everywhere. With that being said, the responsible thing to do is go to someone with a refrigerant recovery system and have them remove it. From what I understand the recovered refrigerant can be recycled or reused, so they may even do it at no cost for the refrigerant...
Okay I know this is irrelevant to this video, but I took my dash out my wagon and put everything back together how it was and now my temperature gauge stoped reading my temp what can it be? Please and thank you for the help.
i swapped my CRX with an engine w/o a/c and i dont understand why people remove it (if it works) the worst part is having to have the heat on in the hot humid georgia summer rainstorms so that the windows don't fog up i am removing the old a/c components off of my d15b6 and putting it on my d16a6 so that i don't get gootch itch after driving during the summer lol
I believe all cars have the same components for each AC system so he should already have an idea of the parts he needs. Just need the specific ones from the EF chassis.
What if i swap the d15 series engine to a B18 series engine can i still leave the ac system but using the original components except for the compressor would it be possible??

Damn this fucking channel is under rated!!!!!!!! Love the videos man you and streetspeed717 is why I’m starting to make videos myself of my crx si.
I've been watching man, keep it up!! Glad to help inspire, and your CRX is badass!
Hey man just curious to take out the heater core I believe. The little box behind the center dash. Do you have to take the dash out
Blake Royston unfortunately yes!
Will the heat still work ? If I only remove the AC
Yes
@@GarageBuiltHondas I just have to put it back and block off the hole on the heater core
Sorry Evap
👍
91 crx with 128k miles, do you think it’s worth trying to figure out why the A/C doesn’t work? Or just rip the whole thing out ?
Mileage doesn't matter at this point. You may have a 31 year old compressor. That's usually what's broken.
Depends on what your end goal for the car is if you want to remove or keep it.
@@GarageBuiltHondas for now, if I just want to clean the evap core, do I need to evacuate the gas, then disconnect the 2 evap hoses from the firewall ? Thanks !
Yes
@@GarageBuiltHondas sorry one more question, if I push on the pin of the low side port and I dont hear anything, can I assume the system is empty ? I haven’t tried the high side port since I cant take the cap off for some reason.
Correct
thank you for this video. This helped me so much and made it so much easier to do it with your instruction.
Very nice, glad it worked and helped you!!
Awesome how to video bro!!!
618 DA9Keefer as always, thanks buddy!
What’s the most common reason these no longer work? Is it from leaks from the o rings or leak from the compressor itself? Trying to decide if it’s worth attempting to fix mine. Not trying to drop a lot of $$ on it.
Compressor is 30 years old generally, just breaks.
Do i need the different cam pulley if i were to convert to ac to a non ac car?
Yes, but check first. You'll pulley might already be be equipped to handle the AC belt. That's a really interesting question I've never thought about before on EF's. Next time I see a non-ac one in person that hasn't been worked on I'll look.
Great job man. Really helpful and well explained 👏 👍 👌
Thank you!
My radiator fan won’t turn on ! The car gets to reg temp and nothing just replaced thermostat and ect !! What could it be when I turn ac on one fan does turn on ( the passenger one) but not the driver side one at all
Fan switch, relays, or wiring.
Does your AC work? And I mean work where it blows 45-50 degrees in the middle of summer?
@@GarageBuiltHondas not exactly sure car has been sitting over 7 years haven’t got to check that out . I mean it feels cold. But the fan that isn’t turning on is the driver side one
great content, your video was very helpful
Thanks
Before removing ac parts you have to pull and evacuate all old freon from the r12 system right?
Yes
How do you do that?
What's you're using now for belt? Since you took out the compressor..
Elgrinch AC compressor and Alternator run off different belts from the crank pulley.
Gonna be a hot summer for that EF
Konichiwa B-series It already was, AC wasn't working. It's going to be a nice refreshing winter finally!
I'm about to buy a 1990 SIR this weekend but the owner did an AC delete so it's missing the climate control. Is it possible to just use a USDM climate control on a JDM SIR?
I'm not sure. If the SiR have an electronic climate control then no. If it's manual then you should be able to
Will this process be the same on an automatic car? Do the transmission lines change things? And if there is power steering will that effect anything? Thanks
Exactly the same. Obviously you may need to move the pump out of the way to get to the compressor.
Hey John picked up a 91 hatch that already had the lines converted to r134 but ac never worked sense i had it . I removed the lines and compressor for my swap now it’s all back and I’m wondering how i should go to recharge it summer is coming in FL and I’m cooking already
*** last owner stated ac just “quit working “
I doubt the compressor works. I'd replace the compressor and receiver drier then vacuum and recharge the system, similar to what I did here. ruclips.net/video/RPU8pyy3Bq8/видео.html
Great video! How much did you save in weight do you think?
ruclips.net/video/oPQIfSS-_pU/видео.html
@@GarageBuiltHondas thanks man. Do you mind if I refer and link to this video. I'm doing a video on CRX weight loss. :)
Go right ahead! 👍
Did you still have the ac compressor & all the ac components
I will buy it for my 91 civic hatchback dx
Thank you
No, long gone
What are the symptoms when the TDC sensor is failing?
Same symptoms as what you mentioned in your other comment on the other video. Replace the distributor.
@@GarageBuiltHondas Thank yo very much!! I really enjoy your videos.
Any info for plugging in an engine wireharness? I'm running a d15b in my 88
You've got to be more specific on what you're doing. I have no clue what you're asking.
@GarageBuiltHondas I did a swap and need to plug in my whole engine wire harness haven't had any luck on like any tutorials
How much weight did it take off
trex x Good question. I'll weigh the parts and update in the description!
Video with parts weighed! ruclips.net/video/oPQIfSS-_pU/видео.html
@garage built hondas
Hey thank you for your time and the information. I didn't even expect a reply so this is all appreciated. Thanks for your knowledge!
+trex x I try to be as informative as possible! Thanks for watching!
thanks for the video man my 90 crx already didnt have most of the ac stuff because it had a b20 swap done by the previous owner so this video was great for me even went to one of the local gonda dealerships and bought the rubber firewall plug to replace the grommet that the ac harness is in
now i just need to find a decent exhaust for my car before i get it inspected because mine broke right at the front of the resonator
There are so many options, just depends on budget.
I just got done with installing the AC system job on a 98 Civic. I'm looking into getting this body style civic as personal. Do these use R12 with Ester oil or R-134A (HFC-134) with PAG 46 oil?
Originally an R12 system. Most are converted now as the R12 isn't legally sold and is worse for our environment.
Are those bmw bbs or miata bbs rims?
Spoon Fixer BMW
Hey garage built honda. Do you have that noise filter relay? I'm in the process of installing my ac and I don't have that filter to connect to the noise filter on my crx. It'd called a noise filter. Suppressor filter relay that sits on top of the fan shroud.
Negative
Which line is the high and which line is the low port ?
High is close to the radiator. Low is really close to the intake arm behind the battery.
If I am going to add AC to an EF that did not come with AC will I need the dash harness from an AC car or do all EFs have the connection for AC?
All EF's have the plug on the harness.
Thank you @@GarageBuiltHondas
So i do have a question, whenever you remove the whole ac unit can you still run your air through your car just no ac? or does the whole entire air system not work? like the fan
The evaporator core that I removed from the air box was solely for that purpose. I reinstalled it because the blower fan still pushes the air through it to the heater core and you still retain full heater function.
Gotcha! so even if i remove the ac system from a later build that i plan on doing, i can still run those things. sweet
what do you do about the belt since you have one less pulley?
Just remove it. You'll only have the alternator belt now.
@@GarageBuiltHondas thanks!
Do you know if the bumper turn sig light lens are the same as the 91 acura integra's
Not this model, the 88-89 might be similar to the 90-91 Integra. I don't know for sure though.
Hey man my 91 dx hatch doesnt has the other fan the one next to ac compressor can i still use the ac ?
You can try. I'm unsure if it would work without it though.
Will the heater still work
Yes
Any link where i can buy all the lines and by all the lines i mean everything I’ve been looking to buy the complete ac system but i can’t dind where to buy some of the ac lines
No. You'll only find them used.
Thanks
hi, what is the part number for the ac compressor for the eg civic?
amzn.to/2msEetB
Would my heater still work if i removed the ac harness???
Yes
Is there anything wrong with the kit? If not now much do you want to sell it for?
On a setup like this where its not working, you won't be able to use many of the parts. A new compressor, receiver/drier and expansion valve are needed. You can flush the evap core and condenser but its hard to get everything out of those parts sometimes so its just better to replace those also. I personally would spend the extra $80 for those 2 parts brand new also especially if using all brand new parts elsewhere.
So how do I vacuum out the freeyon from the ac ?
The only way at home is to vent it to the atmosphere. If you're going to do that, do it slowly so that the oil in the system doesn't spray everywhere.
With that being said, the responsible thing to do is go to someone with a refrigerant recovery system and have them remove it. From what I understand the recovered refrigerant can be recycled or reused, so they may even do it at no cost for the refrigerant...
Okay I know this is irrelevant to this video, but I took my dash out my wagon and put everything back together how it was and now my temperature gauge stoped reading my temp what can it be? Please and thank you for the help.
+Jonathan Godinez Probably got a wire crimped somewhere unfortunately. I would double check the gauge cluster plugs first.
Garage Built Hondas thank you for the info Im going to retake everything out again and recheck everything
+Jonathan Godinez let me know if you find the reason!
Where did you get your front lip thoe ?
I believe he got it off eBay.
will a Ef civic idler pulley , inner brace and washer work with my Ef civic ?
I don't understand your question.
@@GarageBuiltHondas my idler pulley and washer for ac fell off bcus the nut fell I’m wondering if a Eg one will work
I don't believe they are the same. Look up the part #'s to verify. In your first question you said EF twice which is why I didn't understand.
i swapped my CRX with an engine w/o a/c and i dont understand why people remove it (if it works)
the worst part is having to have the heat on in the hot humid georgia summer rainstorms so that the windows don't fog up
i am removing the old a/c components off of my d15b6 and putting it on my d16a6 so that i don't get gootch itch after driving during the summer lol
Haha
I have a 1991 honda civic si, the 1.6L. I wanted to remove the ac, do i need a new belt? Or can i just cut the belt to the ac?
If you're removing it, you can just cut it.
@@GarageBuiltHondas thank you
Wym cut
Cut, like with scissors.
this was a very good video
thx man

do you need to have a bypass pulley for any reason?
Bypass pulley? Not sure what you mean.
Can you tell me what parts i need for the ac because im putting one in my crx and need it done. thanks
Everything in this video. This car still had all the components. You need them all.
Alright thanks man. my mechanic whose gonna put in the ac should watch this vid. I might be missing parts for the ac im gonna put in.
I believe all cars have the same components for each AC system so he should already have an idea of the parts he needs. Just need the specific ones from the EF chassis.
Nice job and good video !!!
Thank you!
Did your radiator fan still work after doing this?
Yes
would these civic/crx a/c system parts fit on to a 91 wagon?
Yes, perfectly!
What if i swap the d15 series engine to a B18 series engine can i still leave the ac system but using the original components except for the compressor would it be possible??

I mean like the condenser, lines and receiver drier
Yes, everything
