Leonard Cohen was very popular in Norway. Norway was one of his biggest markets for his music. He also had a relationship with a norwegian woman called Marianne. She inspired the songs «So Long, Marianne», «Bird on the Wire» & «Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye». Its her picture on the album cover of Songs from a Room.

She is a master at covering story/songs of other masters of story/songs. And, yes, the crystal clarity of her enunciation and delivery.

this was from a tribute to leonard cohen. aurora has the abilty to find her way into the heart and mind of the writer and never try and do more or less than the writer intended. she is determined and i say always humble and confident and truthful so that she wants the writer's message to take center stage while uses her entire body and voice to deliver the message and send it straight to your heart like anarrow dipped in emotion. She does the same with the David Bowie song. LIFE ON MARS and i listen to that every day. Aurora is not just as many say, a DIFFERENT KIND OF HUMAN, SHE IS A BETTER KIND OF HUMAN. I LISTEN to her and EIVOR every day for at least 2 hours. STUNNING.

What a stunning cover of one of my favorite Cohen songs. Thank you Aurora. And thank you, Adam. I saw Leonard Cohen in his last tour around six years ago. He was 80 and he played for more than 3 hours. Glad he came to Brooklyn, NY. I read his poetry before I heard his music, which I first heard in the late 60s when I was in high school. Aurora is special. Leonard Cohen RIP.

Aurora never misuses her skills by pouring everything into everything. She is far to honest for that. She flexes her muscles just the right amount for the occation. Respect. Also, I think you are spot on Adam, on your observation on Auroras... I dont know the english word for it, but she "lives" what she is singing with her whole body and face. Its just so, well, quite emotional to watch really. I belive Aurora will be a fine actor as well one day.

I think her most interesting Cohen cover is 'The Partisan,' a melancholy song which has a particularly interesting history. "La Complainte du partisan" (English: "The lament of the partisan") is an anti-fascist anthem about the French Resistance in World War II. The song was written in 1943 by Russian-born Anna Marly (1917-2006), with lyrics by French Resistance leader Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie (1900-1969). It was initially performed by Anna in French cafes (much like a scene from the movie Casablanca). Leonard Cohen heard the song and performed an English version (using translated lyrics, with part of the song still in French), which AURORA listened to, and later performed after Cohens passing.

Good poetry blended with a great melody always gets me, which is one reason I love Aurora.
Trivial note: the refrain in this song is very old and has been used in various songs, such as “When I need you”. It doesn’t bother me much since it’s mostly just a vehicle for these sublime lyrics

And just like Aurora tells this story in a litle bit different way than the original, like it has been done for generasions. That get us listen to the story even better. This was absolutly hypnotic💗

  • @faridzakeri7759

I liked how she didn't change the gender of the narrator. Made me think that the singer can be like an actor. They don't have to be talking from their own perspective all the time. A female singer can tell the story out of the mouths of a man. Here is more of a celebration of Leonard Cohen I feel... He's just passed away, and she does this cover to honor her I feel... (I'm guessing) So she doesn't even change the last line: "sincerely l.cohen"
Now when I see that first shot of lights falling on her again, I feel as if cohen's soul has restructured in Aurora... and singing for us one last time!
Unlike you I listened to the original many times and loved it for a long time. She hasn't tampered with it like other covers, well frankly she didn't need to... 'cause that was a perfect gem of a storytelling as it was. Do check the original Adam.
I just realized something new about the lyrics too... Cohen finishes off the letter with the same lines as he starts it (well nearly): "And Jane came by with a lock of your hair
, She said that you gave it to her, That night that you planned to go clear" he even holds back the question in the end... sure it seems like the chorus but I like to think that means he just wrote down that much to him , and all the other stuff he shares with his "enemy" are just his thought said in his mind, but ultimately never put to the paper.

What an amazing and beautiful combination. I can hear Leonard in the lyrics and beat of the song, and the story (as you say). The sentiments are so Aurora-like making the match so wonderful. Ok, I'm typing this while listening to your comments and you've said it all: including her keeping it as simple as the original, which maintains a certain melancholy and loveliness.

The owner of that clothing, the famous blue raincoat - was Leonard Cohen and not someone else - and I love the uncertainty that gives the lyrics. Cohen is on both sides of story. I recommend Cohens last texts in the book "The Flame" - its like a book of an "up to date" not king, but humble wise man Salomon

  • @Bustefaen

What a beautiful rendition of one of the most excuisite examples of storytelling in music - all in the form of a letter. In the original, it is signed by «a friend», which is in itself a beautiful conclusion to a long and obviously complicated relationship. Aurora changes is to «Cohen», which was lovely considering this is from a tribute concert.
Cohen’s original is wonderful, but I really prefer Jennifer Warnes’s version from the record actually called «Famous Blue Raincoat». She used to be a backup singer for him, all the songs on the record are his, and he even duets on at least one of them. It is an amazing record. Now, I won’t try to rate if Aurora or Warnes has the «best» version. They are quite different vocalists, and if their renditions are similar, they are by no means the same. But you should give that record from Warnes a listen too. Apart from Bob Dylan, I don’t think there has ever been a storyteller on par with him in music. Such rich material for other artists to delve into!

I was stupid enough to think you haven't reacted to this song.... I am sorry ;-)
    Some fun facts:
This was a tribute concert with many different artists; "So Long, Leonard Cohen", 25 april 2017. (Cohen died 07. november 2016).
This concert was in Oslo Spektrum, that has a capacity of 10.000 (The biggest indoor venue in Norway are Telenor Arena, 23.000).
Brag fact: I know the drummer.....the lucky bastard right behind Aurora... ;-) He is from the same little town as I am.
Yes, you are right... She has not modified (Aurorafied) this song as much as "normal", my guess is that since it is a tribute concert, she would pour her sole
into the best "original version" as possible. If it had been a radio show type "sing a song by your favorite artist" I think may be it would have been different.
Is there a person in the world that REALLY puts their feelings into their performances than Aurora... I was afraid she was going to cry at the first corus.. look at her eyes....

Best version ever by Aurora, but you will as well as Cohen´s original, find it interesting to compare it with Jennifer Warnes version from 87-88 . I believe Aurora have heard that one - decided to do it more quiet, but still there is some elements - but do not exactly see what. May be Aurora tok the violin-idea, from the use of the saxophone i Warnes version ?

Using very few ingredients so everything you put in your mouth is easily identified.and not as most foreign dishes where there are so many ingredients that it almost like a stew where everything tasts the same. Taking away an ingredient makes often both sound and taste better and a lot of our best singers and musicians understands the simple fact; Less is More..

It’s fine to have that observation, however it is intended as Staffan points out - it is the first time I am hearing this particular version of the song. You can’t simply just hear ‘Aurora’ for the first time - it always has to be a song of hers you experience for the first time. That’s why I alway label the song and then if I’ve heard the song before - then the next version of it I’m hearing (e.g. live vs studio). I hope this makes sense! And thank you for your kind words 😊

It’s like not liking Walmart, but going into a Walmart store and screaming ‘I hate Walmart!’ the people who are there enjoy shopping there and your comment won’t change its existence. You don’t like it? Don’t go there. Simple as that. The same applies here. The videos you enjoy without reactions/commentary still exist and are as popular as ever.
