What wood combination would you choose for your box?

I just used 1x6 Maple from Home Depot with dovetails on a variant of this. I like your style though as it has less weight than mine. Baltic Birch for the bottom panel

Awesome, friend! I just tried to build one after finally getting some awesome black cherry from my mother in law split out, dried, and machined flat. I studied Jay Bates and the fifty other RUclipsrs and web plans and dove in, turned out kinda weird and wonky I said, "Hmmm... Pretty Little Boxes are harder than they look", because of first timer forgetting a couple things, but also having to interpret some of the details from other instructions. And then I am served up yours and I spot a couple of my mistakes and see my workflow more clearly now because you filled in some details for me. Walnut is expensive? But figured maple is not? I would have re sawed that to 1/2” as well. I used to use 3/4 “ stock for through dovetails. Screw that. Most people don’t know the difference between a hand cut dovetail and a box joint in 1/2” stock and they certainly are not willing to pay for the difference in workmanship. Mitered sides with a fake dovetail key is the way to go.

nice box and all, but not to be rude... first woodworking project? If you're going to make a "first woodworking project" video, why make one that includes thousands of dollars of power tools? Lol. Most people looking for their first woodworking project are not looking for one that includes the use of expensive saws etc. That makes the whole thing seem wayyy more daunting. If you want to make an actual "first woodworking project" video, maybe consider these things. I looked this up bc i wanted to build a small, simple box with minimal tools, you know, as a beginner. But in the video all i see are expensive table saws etc...that definitely aren't needed, but it'd be nice to have a video for people like me. Cheers
