This is an honest project. No cheating with glorified cnc machines. Real know-how and adaptation to the project as it comes to life. Great result in the end!
John - Having watched your channel for a while, I remember when you rough milled the wood from the tree. Really satisfying to see it come together in such a beautiful piece. For a box, I was amazed at how many different techniques were used. The key being, they were used by a pro craftsman. Thanks for taking the time to make a video of it.
My father build a hardwood box over 30 years ago in his father's carpenter shop to hold oil paints. Both my Father and Grandfather have passed away, but I still have the box. It's pretty beat up and still has its original finish, but I think of them every time I look at it. I've been thinking of building one for my step son. It's important for men to make and gift these things. Instant sub for the opening joke LOL
John, it is incredible to see the breadth of work you have put in over the years - this video was a beautiful creation made on your multitude of amazing creations. It really struck me and made me appreciate how much you have shared with us over the years. Thank you
Wow a real treat it's not Often that you make projects completely out of''real''wood . I was gonna 'comment/ ask' why you didn't made the groove first and then the box joint but the article cleared that up ! Store it with your plans and Tell '' this is the mastercopy'' since the box is made by the master! Hope to see more projects like this.👌
john you probably don't hear it enough but your a got dam genius! While watching you operate that box joint jig that you created i was observing the mechanics involved and even though i've seen it before this time it hit me the amount of ingenuity that went into something most folks would buy from rockler and be done. same applies to many of your tools but the impressive part is these are not novelty replicas or display items rather you actually use the hell out of the tools you create and that's freaking awesome brother!!!!
Gorgeous little box. Thanks for explaining the how-to as well. As a beginner, I loved seeing all the different techniques, especially using the table saw for the coved lid!
Thanks John I really appreciate that that's a beautiful box. Concerning those hinges I've once heard that there is nothing more permanent than a temporary arrangement. Secondly, I really like the thought of using that extended fence I have made one and it works great I've had it for years. It is really good at straightening boards. My fence is 8 ft long and I even made a 10 ft long fence with 6ft in extensions. Obviously the long fences aren't needed very often but they will accommodate eight foot long material, when needed. Keep up the good work and the projects I love them.
Wow! That box is stunning! Your craftsmanship is great, but that beautiful spalted maple, with the tung oil finish, really steals the show. Nicely done, John.
That method for coving the panel on the table saw is absolutely genius. All this time I thought I needed a big 3xp3nsive router bit to do that. Thank you
Got halfway through on my coffee break. Looking forward to watching the whole thing when I get home from work. Always a pleasure watching your videos John
Marvelous pattern in the wood. I would definitely keep such a work of art. I would keep "treasures" in there; my mother's earrings, some of my kid's drawings, a gift from a dear friend.
I've watched a lot of your videos John, and I gotta say, I really like this one, especially. A totally stunning build from start to finish, and an absolutely gorgeous box in the end! Your craftsmanship is amazing, and definitely something I look up to. Thanks so much for sharing this.
First, love the way you got the grain wrap around the box. Very nice and really does justice to the wood. Second, That cove detail on the lid works great as it shows off some of the depth of the grain.
Wow! Wish I could give this more than one thumbs up! Beautiful piece of wood, and the perfect use for it! Elegant simple design. Love how you used so many of your shop built tools throughout. Think the power sander is the only tool you didn’t make. Very clever how you fixed the broken box joint ends. Really great project and video. Thanks John!
Like this box video John especially the way you put the curved shape on the box top. I think I will have a go at a similar box myself. Thank for the idea, I alway watch most of your videos because it's good to see woodworking from different angles. Keep up the good work John. 👍👍👍
Note to self, next time I'm doing box joints cut some in a scrap piece while I'm set up to cut them just in case I need a repair piece. Nice looking box John, I got some very good tips from this video. On a side note I was toying with building a jointer out of parts I salvaged from a 12 1/2" planer, I'd all but given up on the idea till i saw you using your homemade jointer.
That's a really nice box - and there's just something perfect about making things from wood you've harvested / has come from your property. I have some ash and cherry that's been drying for a couple years now, maybe I'll make my own keep-sake box....
Beautiful wood and a super design. Excellent workmanship. I'm certain you will get pleasure from this little box every time you open the lid. All the best.
Very nice John. Beautiful box. I love box joints for projects like this over dovetails or other joints. I have a couple chunks of wood I'm saving for some special future project, I guess we all do.
That box is absolutely beautiful great job keep up the good work I have always enjoyed your videos and have learned a lot over the past couple of years thank you
This is truely a piece of art to my eyes. Basically you took this raw piece of wood which could potentially be interesting, and you made it shine like a treasure after a few hours of work! As a beginner in woodworking, I would love to see the hidden value in pieces of wood I have here and there... Cheers man, keep on doing good !
That tapered cut - and all this time I wondered how such a large router bit would exist. xD The box sentiment resonates with me. (no speaker design puns intended) I really do think that binary thinking is the greatest weakness of the modern world. I may be way off, but it seems the opening comment touched on that. It's inspiring to see someone function within a balance of logic and uncertainty - a consistent theme in your narrative style. I should also point out that I learned more about woodworking, as usual - and I do put what I learn here to use. cheers!
Allen, I assume you are referring to the cove cut into the top panel. Router bits that large do exist. They can be found in both horizontal and vertical cutting styles. One needs a good size router and a solid router table setup. Check the woodworking supply outlets such as Rockler, Woodcraft, Lee Valley, etc.
Matthias Wandel has some videos on his channel about making baseboard moulding where he makes a ton of these cuts. Definitely worth the watch. King’s Woodworking also did a video about making raised panel doors that shows how you would accomplish this with a router and some huge bits. ruclips.net/video/WEOVKmh9dFY/видео.html

I would keep some Valkyrie's stuff into it. 😉
Nice box. Love the wood grain!!!!
Cigars? Or maybe an urn for a loved one? A beautiful box built by a master craftsman no matter what’s stored inside.
The heart of the one that broke mine...
Just kidding, but somebody had to say it! Awesome box Brother! Once again, I loved the video!
Beautiful box! I enjoy your work so much, I look forward to every post! Thank you, keep’em coming.
Looks like a cigar box.
Not 9 seconds in and John made my day.
Nice to see you making projects. Always nice to see how you approach challenges.
This is an honest project. No cheating with glorified cnc machines. Real know-how and adaptation to the project as it comes to life. Great result in the end!
Intro of the year.

Thanks for the kind words and for watching it :)
Wow AWESOME 🙏. Du bist der Beste . . .

Beautiful work John! You have so much home built equipment now that I have to look twice at where the jig ends and the piece starts 😉
He really should paint his homemade equipment.
I heard green is a good colour for that :)
Jehty naah, he picked nice wood :) and it seems John is more of a natural colors-tones-shades guy

Once again a perfect video. Craftsmanship, narration, production, aesthetics...
Thank you again

Beautiful box! It's so great to see all of your hand-made tools in action along the process of building things.
Thanks :)
This thing looks ridiculously good. How you solved the inevitable problems every project comes with is also great to watch and good to learn from.
Absolutely stunning figure... never thought I'd say that to another man, but there you go.
The Other Marshal box and crotch, a classic combination.
Gorgeous little box. Thanks for explaining the how-to as well. As a beginner, I loved seeing all the different techniques, especially using the table saw for the coved lid!
Yes, that part really caught my attention, had never seen that technique before.
You are a truly Craftsman. The amount of homemade jigs, clamps, etc. is astounding. Keep it up on your presentations. Thank U.
You are a fantastic and fun guy, mixing incredible knowledge and technique with wit and accomplishment. LOVED this piece. Excellent.
Thanks John I really appreciate that that's a beautiful box. Concerning those hinges I've once heard that there is nothing more permanent than a temporary arrangement. John, I love your channel. You are a fantastic woodworker and teacher!
You have such humble narrating, you are obviously a master of your craft , cool gadgets, thanx for the video keep making that saw dust
Beautiful wood, beautiful finish, beautiful box. Beautiful.
John, you are better than a surgeon. Beautiful. I wish I could do it like that.
Beautiful result, well explained and some really useful techniques in that video - thank you.
Great build. Wonderful to have the old video!
Wow! That box is stunning! Your craftsmanship is great, but that beautiful spalted maple, with the tung oil finish, really steals the show. Nicely done, John.
Your cold open gave me a chuckle. I shared with some friends, showed my wife, and then showed my son. Humor FTW.
BEAUTIFUL, you've come a long way from the day you and your brother reworked that door and frame at the school. Well done.
That wood is Devine! Great job John
Nice to see a woodworking project for a change. I like it a lot. Thanks for sharing your talents.
That method for coving the panel on the table saw is absolutely genius. All this time I thought I needed a big 3xp3nsive router bit to do that. Thank you
The color really came out with the Oil. Great job.
Got halfway through on my coffee break. Looking forward to watching the whole thing when I get home from work. Always a pleasure watching your videos John
That was a work of art! loved watching it.
Marvelous pattern in the wood. I would definitely keep such a work of art. I would keep "treasures" in there; my mother's earrings, some of my kid's drawings, a gift from a dear friend.
I like your approach and the outcome that you shared. This box is totally you!
It's amazing all the things you are doing with a table saw
I've watched a lot of your videos John, and I gotta say, I really like this one, especially.
A totally stunning build from start to finish, and an absolutely gorgeous box in the end!
Your craftsmanship is amazing, and definitely something I look up to. Thanks so much for sharing this.
I enjoyed the slightly longer video. Gives more of a chance to tell the whole story. And although it's not an original story, I still enjoy all of it.
I'm a big fan of that cove cut on the raised panel! Well done!
John, what a beautiful piece!
From a tree in your back yard to that, pretty incredible my friend.
Gary
Wow, the box would be more beautiful than anything you would put in it! Excellent video!!!
First, love the way you got the grain wrap around the box. Very nice and really does justice to the wood.
Second, That cove detail on the lid works great as it shows off some of the depth of the grain.
God damn that's a good looking box !!! Nice work John !!! Man that wood .....

GORGEOUS, love the character of the wood that was used!!
i like the 2 sticks slide together to measure the inside of the groove!! slick little trick.

John, Nicely done. Another great video! What beautiful wood! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful wood and a super design. Excellent workmanship. I'm certain you will get pleasure from this little box every time you open the lid. All the best.
The spalting is gorgeous! Regarding the brass hardware, I've seen guys torch them which changes the coloring. You could do something like that...
Thought about "aging" it, but I'm pretty sure I'll be ordering nicer hardware for this soon, including a lock for the lid.
Excellent video, so many 'little tricks' to absorb, and that wood looked outstanding!
Very beautiful. There are boxes and then there's yours.
Beautiful -- worth the three-year wait.
Very nice John. Beautiful box. I love box joints for projects like this over dovetails or other joints. I have a couple chunks of wood I'm saving for some special future project, I guess we all do.
That wood looks great.
Lovely Box - Enjoyed the video - thank you.
That's one mighty fine looking box you got there.
Very nice box and piece of art! Very well done.
Your box is beautiful, John.
Excellent craftsmanship. Very good choice of artistic wood. Thanks for sharing this simple but very enjoyable video. Well done, and done well.

That box is absolutely beautiful great job keep up the good work I have always enjoyed your videos and have learned a lot over the past couple of years thank you
That box is interesting proyect. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from California.
Beautiful John, more so because the wood came from your own yard, and you cut from rough to size etc.
Absolutely Stunning - end product, and your process / tools / jigs / work!
Beautiful craftsmanship!
This is truely a piece of art to my eyes. Basically you took this raw piece of wood which could potentially be interesting, and you made it shine like a treasure after a few hours of work!

Very nice looking box, great job. 👍👍👍
John, Definitely like the figure and the way you matched it!
Nice job.
That's beautiful mate, bloody awesome.
