This takes a bit of the video editing load off of me, since I'm doing smaller pieces as they happen, instead of one big long one at the end. How I made the twin screw gear connected vise: ruclips.net/video/LnbY0eHZ0CY/видео.html Get the plans for the gear vise: ibuildit.ca/plans/twin-screw-gear-linked-vise/ Plans for the drill press table: ibuildit.ca/plans/drill-press-table/ Drill press table build video: ruclips.net/video/VNjTn0WQM-s/видео.html The biggest thing I hated about my drill press was manually cranking the table up and down. The rack that makes that happen bent and wouldn't work right again after that, plus it's quite a reach around with a wooden table installed. The motorized lift was salvaged from an old reclining chair I took apart years ago (you can watch that here: ruclips.net/video/-4LYNGnOXcA/видео.html ) and is perfect for powering the table up and down. As for the vise, the idea occured to me while doing another project that it would be great for drilling into the ends of shorter stock, or for holding small parts while drilling. Since I wasn't using my twin screw vise where it was, I decided to use that. BUT a simple moxon vise would work as well. So, what's up with the split personality? Am I losing my mind? Maybe. But after 12 years straight of making videos, I need something interesting to keep me engaged. Doing this came to me when I thought about the changes I'd already made, and how I'd have to undo them to go ahead with this upgrade. So I had one of my typical pros and cons conversations with myself and thought it would be neat to act it out on video. Will I do it again? Maybe (most likely, actually), but it's harder than it looks and I can see myself skipping it because of that and how long it takes to film and edit.
Might be a good idea to have an even number of gears - that way, the two levers would turn in a counter-rotating direction, and parasitic torques on the table could be made zero. The middle-gears need not all be the same size, that may help with the centering.
This was fantastic sir.. One of RUclipss OG’s of woodworking still bringing it… Thank you for all the entertainment and knowledge you’ve given us over the years
You know, its been a while since I checked in on your uploads. Imagine my shock to know that you're perfecting video effects to the high level of craftsmanship that you apply to your woodworking. Thanks for the surprise, keep it up.
You never fail to impress us John. Always thinking outside the box. Repurposing parts and materials is always a plus. Great result. Thank you for sharing.
The back and forth banter between self and persnickety self is a fantastic feature to your already wonderful video and consice helpful educational comentary. All the best to you, watching you from Salvador, Brazil.
I am always in awe of your woodworking skills, plus sharing them with us woodworkers helps us save money on alot of things you produce. Thank you for sharing.
This. Is. Fantastic! I've been considering modifying to a square column. No need with this design. Been considering an xy table. Nope. Don't need it. I could go on... This is great, man. Really very cool. Another innovative tool mod from you that I can't wait to build myself. Nice job. Just, nice friggin job!
Hahaha loved the John & John parts! Now the voice over John has to make the working John stop making noise and wait so he can properly talk :D Great construction and voice over explanations as always!
This is one sweet build John. I am also tired of knocking the skin of mu knuckles every time I lower or raise the drillpress table. And as for johnny-boy....you´ll get him straightened out and he´ll be an asset for sure. Great editing, ..... I guess it was pretty time consuming. Good job Sir
I think the vertically mounted CNC was the most useful part. Certainly a cool project, I just think there are too many places where things can get misaligned a degree or two so the holes aren't vertical anymore. Still, I loved the video, the effects and the editing!
Nice work. And the interplay with that other guy was a clever bit that we don't see very often. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week 😎
John I gotta say that I love the mods you so thoughtfully added to an already awesomely user friendly drill press. Very glad that you let your creative muse talk you into that stroke of genius. Love the format of the video also. I had already viewed each of the five chapters, as it were, then got to enjoy the clever madness play out in all its glory. You did a nice job with being in two places at once and of course the final product rocks as per your usual magic. Thanks as always for sharing however you want.
That's a GREAT project. A few years ago, I installed a DC gear motor on my drillpress to raise and lower the table. It works for my purpose. Now maybe, you might want to invest in a keyless chuck.
I have been following your channel for several years . I was wondering what was happening , because there was quite a long break . I m glad that you reappeared in force with innovative ideas , as usual . Good luck in the future from Romania .
Great video John. I acctually liked the alter ego part, espesially used to explain a bit of the process. I have a coupple of actuators I got a hold of and was planning to make a racking wise for my new workbench with them. But now with this video, I got more instpiration because I also recently accuired the electronics from an old "hospital" bed, it has a long actuator for lifting the entire bed and three more for the other functions. It might be a possibillity that I now have plans for a drillpress table with all three axis motorized.
Very cool! Not something I would use because I don't do that much drilling. Another cool feature I can see are those times you're drilling further into a piece and the travel on the drill press isn't long enough? Having the ability to raise the table without having to readjust the holding on the piece being drilled is a huge advantage! Keep up the good work!
Like it , and the one on a vice . I put a similar table on mine without the stops but used a fence off an old drop/miter saw as a fence and attached it one side so can adjust it to any size wood . Give your " alter ego " the job ,see how he goes . should do more about lifting heavy blocks . I think egyptians uses shafts filled with water and locks and pulleys .
Amazed you get anything done with that guy always breathing down your neck! p.s. wonderful build, I love the combination of simplicity and complexity where it's needed, resulting in something that just works.
That video editing in the beginning was pretty dang good, unlike some professionals that do it for “vines” or “ticktock” that do it very poorly and people fucking freak out over how “cool” it was.
Not only do you know how to use your tools with skill and precision but you also are very clever when it comes to design and conception. This upgrade of your drill is absolutely brilliant. By the way it was really funny to see you talking to your... clone. This also was very well done ;-)
Great build John. My parents we’re getting rid of their couches a few days ago…. I grabbed those actuators out of the recliners. Thought I would use them some time.
Watching you nudge the fence on the table saw for doing dado cut seems like you could build a notched device that moves the fence over a blade width with a quick twist or something to make that operation quicker and more precise.
Notches will receive wear over time and become less precise, so he'd probably have to come up with a way to quickly make spares and replace that mechanism
3:02 I'd love to know your thoughts on Baltic Birch alternatives. It's scarce enough at this point that there should be alternatives popping up. It's been my go-to for years now, but suppliers just aren't stocking it at this point... I'm not specifically attached to birch, but I haven't found anything else quite like it. Surely there are other types of plywood with uniform, high count layers...
I too, (or, as in your video, I two) had a thought. . . Could you lock the quill in place and then use the lift to bring the work up to meet the bit ?[similar to a lathe] But I can't see any benefit from this, just curious I suppose. I really like the actuator - as I'm done with all the cranking on the rack too! Btw, always hear that other guy out, he's not always wrong. . .
lol, I think that I just recycled that exact linear actuator out of a powered chair for a similar use. To adjust my headstock on my Shopsmith while its in drill motor mode, which that particular one always is. Nice design, I may have to borrow a few ideas on mine.

Not only an ingenious build, but your tolerance of that other guy is commendable.
This was fantastic sir..

That by far is the coldest mad scientist (engineering) I have seen and probably will ever see for a drill press. Nicely done!
Check out Marius Hornberger 😅
@@_rlb will do
@@_rlb yeah, his hydraulic clamping mechanism is 👌!
you should see those cnc mill conversions

The opening was very well done.
Your drill press mod is amazing, you certainly think outside the box.
The editing was super fun on this. Great project too!
You never fail to impress us John. Always thinking outside the box. Repurposing parts and materials is always a plus. Great result. Thank you for sharing.
Hi John, I just love your new format of arguing with yourself on how to do the project. It must have taken you a month to edit the video. Great job

That's some real improvement! Awesome design, John!
Thanks :)
That last interaction with yourself couldn't be more spot on lol! Love it, keep up the good work my man! 🫡

I learned a lot about myself when I met myself :)
That has to be the best set up for a drill press I’ve seen on RUclips
Awesome Build John!
Thanks brother!
wicked cool, bud. wish I was half as innovative. glad there are those like you who share their genius. Thanks!
I will probably never build or upgrade anything like is done on this channel but I do enjoy watching these ingenious inventions come to life.
Love your tool mods John. Always have that "why didn't I think of that" moments watching your videos.

You sir are a freaking WIZARD in the wood shop! Amazing project
Great edit, John. Lots of fun :)
Thanks Jay!
i love the subtle "fuck off" you gave the content haters with the skit at the beginning, this is why i love your content.
Great project and workmanship. Well done! I liked the new style of video too. Keep it coming.

I prefer the one with the beard, thank you for recording and sharing this with us
John your alter ego montage was fun. The drill press linear actuator lift table an vise really elevated the functionality.
What a fantastic idea!! The new generation for drill presses and mortisers! Patent that idea!
Double the fun, half the calories.
John, you’re my f***n hero sir!
Not sure I’ll approach this myself but it sure is the best drillpress setup out there. Nicely done!
Glad to know I’m not the only one with an alter ego in the shop!
You've got the coolest shop made saw I've seen on RUclips. I'd love to see your take on a slider.
We love the "Get the most of what I have" videos
Jay Bates level of editing in this one. Love it.
😊😊 Love the ultra ego! 😊😊 Great project! Especially innovative vertical clamping!!
Glad to see you two getting along well finally :)
I could watch you all day! Not sure I could make the things you make so easy!
I like the idea of a vise allowing to drill end grain on long pieces.
I needed this Thursday! John does it again!
John, this is an amazing video. I love this format with your alter ego! Also I love the idea of this drillers vise.
Very Very great build and idea to include the vice! Thanks
this is so so so so so cool. I wish I could drop everything and replicate this build. what an awesome design

You conquered your shadow. Take your ❤ container and continue on your noble quest. Thank you for showing us the way.
Brilliant! I hope you’re some how protected against someone stealing this design.
Great job on the drill press upgrade John! that really turned out nice :) Thanks for sharing the video with us!😎👍💖JP
wait why is the video editing getting better and better still lmao
you're a top tier content creator and engineer and woodworker keep it up
Great improvement. Love it.

Really interesting what you did with your drill press. Never seen so far. Nice job. Regards, Arne 😁👍
That video editing in the beginning was pretty dang good, unlike some professionals that do it for “vines” or “ticktock” that do it very poorly and people fucking freak out over how “cool” it was.
Helps to have a workshop with workshop lighting, compositing is usually mainly affected by differences in lighting
Great video and project John, definitely a unique drill press now. 👌
Thanks!
An Engineering Marvel!!! Thank you!!!
I've had some full blown conversations with myself but that tops it all
Not only do you know how to use your tools with skill and precision but you also are very clever when it comes to design and conception. This upgrade of your drill is absolutely brilliant. By the way it was really funny to see you talking to your... clone. This also was very well done ;-)
Imagine if Matthias came over to add his thoughts.
Great build once again. Cheers.
John that is outstanding..thanks for the video
Excellent video John, thank you.
B.
Thank you!
Great build John. My parents we’re getting rid of their couches a few days ago…. I grabbed those actuators out of the recliners. Thought I would use them some time.
Absolutely amazing! One of the real greats!
Outstanding project and the editing was great 👍
As you don’t turn the base, you can add marks to the vice for measuring
Yes! Good idea. Ones for side to side on the vise and ones for depth on the rails that move in and out.
Editing is the best upgrade this drill press got in its lifetime 😂
Awesome work John! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks :)
this build is outrageous
Wow, that is quite the contraption. Very original.
What a very impressive upgrade.
Excellent build John, love it

Great build! Much more versatile than a regular drill press table. Did the idea come to you before or after you acquired the actuator?
Thanks! After I took it from the chair I started thinking of uses for it, and this was one of them.
@@JohnHeisz Very cool!
All these years and I never knew you have a twin 😂
Most folks attach their drill press vise to the drill press table, but you did it the other way round!
A centerline across the clamp would be a great addition!
Hey john, since you are a music lover. You should watch Ren singing "Hi Ren". A song that deals with dealing with our conflicting inner voices.
3:02 I'd love to know your thoughts on Baltic Birch alternatives. It's scarce enough at this point that there should be alternatives popping up. You sir, are a master. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome idea, great execution
Well done John! Love watching your vids
Love it. You guys are great together.
Excellent work on both the drill press and the video. Will we see more of John Two?
Good job ! I think you can add a light that points to the work.
I really enjoyed seeing the Heisz twins debate.
Btw, always hear that other guy out, he's not always wrong. . .
Really awesome idea and execution, as always!
Great video! Only way to make that drill press better is to pull that sticker off the end of the belt cover.
Great build and great acting!
lol, I think that I just recycled that exact linear actuator out of a powered chair for a similar use. To adjust my headstock on my Shopsmith while its in drill motor mode, which that particular one always is. Nice design, I may have to borrow a few ideas on mine.
I was thinking if you put a shield over the clamping screws to stop the saw dust from sticking to them. Even sliding a pipe over each one?
