  • Hydrogen is touted as a new up and coming clean fuel and today I want to go into the chemistry of why hydrogen production isn't as clean as you may think and there are a lot of chemical hurdles it has to overcome to become a proper clean energy source and for widespread use in hydrogen fuel cell cars. Hydrogen can't be a green replacement for EV's and their batteries unless the H2 source for fuel cells is also clean.

While this video was just about hydrogen fuel, I think a video about green energy should point out the most electricity turbines are run by coal and are inefficient in transmission so that can also be debated as a green energy source. Regarding the hydrogen cell energy, the biggest barrier I read about is that the exhaust of h20 is at near boiling if not super heated which can melt black top before vaporizing to gas and would require a massive resurfacing of much of our road system.

Definitely good points about energy generation on the grid. It depends on where you live (like where I am is a lot of nuclear) that is clean. I imagine the temperature of the exhaust water could be regulated even by just a radiator type setup before it leaves the car to cool it. It’s a very complex topic that needs to be talked about!

Really enjoy the teaching, but informative style videos

I just hope, in the near future, our leaders would, somehow, make an investment on electrolysis. Although, it's quite expensive. But I also believe that, only when leaders think of what's best, what's efficient and finding more of an economic-friendly way to sustain our society today, and only we can push the government to push this kind of an implementation and have its own budget. I agree on making hydrogen as an alternative way or option to petroleum, but only when there is electrolysis applied. And I thank you so much for this information, Zahl.
p.s. English is not my first language.

Also hydrogen is expensive to store

And pressurized vessels especially in cars would be dangerous in a wreck

love the explanation, now i'll going to share it with my friends.

But I mean to counter the nitrogen oxides problem you would just need to pump carbon monoxide along a platinum catalytic converter so you would form nitrogen and carbon dioxide instead sure carbon dioxide is a green house gas so that is a negative i guess

True there are definitely ways around it! They just tend to add complexity and aren’t 100% (as you said with CO2 formation)

Is there any open air burning on Earth is not involve Nitrogen and oxygen?!!
What is going to happen when we don't have gravity on Earth anyway?!!
Please stop blaming living organism about CO2, NH3, CH4 and ClO2
as a global expertise of blaming.
